Check immediately for missing pages! 5 out of 5 stars.

This review is about an apparent manufacturing or publisher defect: pages 37 to 84 are missing! They are not ripped out of the book, they are simply not there. I did not start reading it and get to page 37 until after the Amazon 30-day return period was over, so I've had to go thru a rigmarole with Customer Service about how to replace the book, ship back the other one, get a refund, etc. Very frustrating. Also, the customer service dept at Amazon classified this as a "damaged in shipment" problem, although I did my best to explain it's a publishing problem. So now how do I know when they send me the replacement book, the pages will not also be missing. I highly recommend the book, but get it at your local bookshop or if you buy from Amazon, check those pages right away.

Editorial Review:

The author of Dinosaur Brains offers protection from people who seek to destroy the emotional and psychological well-being of others. Like the fabled demons, these vampires: -- Think their needs are more important than yours -- Believe "the rules" apply only to other people -- Use their tempers in the same way terrorists use bombs Emotional Vampires tells readers how to spot a "vampire" in their lives, which defense strategies to employ to prevent one from striking, and what to do if and when they find themselves under attack.

A true classic. The grand grand father of all self help books. Stand the test of time. Very helpful indeed. Must read.

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite "and classical" passages for your reference.

Knowledge becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end. pg 76

Success requires no explanations. Failure permits no alibis. pg 138

Genuine wisdom is usually conspicuous through modesty and silence. pg 141

Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will power, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives. pg 151

Guidebook for using emotions in negotiation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Far too many books treat negotiation as a rational process, as if the parties involved are calculating machines (or close to it). Authors Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro show that is not the case. They explain how emotions affect negotiating, and provide tools based on five core emotional concerns for dealing with powerful feelings at the negotiating table. This slender book is clearly written, and the authors illustrate each point in their theoretical framework with examples from their extensive experience. The result is an immediately applicable book that provides a host of practical tips. getAbstract recommends it to anyone who negotiates...and that means just about everyone.

Using your emotions positively 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As the title suggests, the authors Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro set out to show how to manage emotions during a negotiation - both yours and the other party's. Fisher is the co-author of the best selling book on negotiation, "Getting To Yes" and the similar style is evident here - simple concepts with plenty of real case scenarios to illustrate.

The book is in five parts, but it's part two that has all the guts of their concept. The five chapters in this section outline the author's key negotiating strategies for managing emotions - express appreciation, build alliances, respect autonomy, acknowledge status and choose a fulfilling role. I found the best of these to be "express appreciation" which has three simple strategies - understand their (the other party) point of view; find merit in what the other person thinks, feels and does; communicate your understanding. Whilst these may seem like common sense and reasonably straight forward, the hints and tips the authors give on how to implement these is well worth the price of this book. For example, one that impressed me was how to show appreciation for the other party's argument whilst not necessarily agreeing with it, thus building positive rapport and approaching the negotiation from a collaborative rather than adversarial perspective.

Fisher and Shapiro are extremely experienced and knowledgeable negotiators. I really liked their many (real) cases to illustrate key points. I will certainly use the things I have learnt from reading this book in my own negotiations. My one piece of advice - if you are a novice negotiator, I would suggest reading a book such as "Getting to Yes" first so that you have some basic negotiating principles to work from. The tips in this book can then enhance your expertise.

Years of Knowledge 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book. I am in the process of becoming a public speaker and wanted to be very affective with the people I speak to. This book helped me to make sure my workshop is designed in the correct order to teach from A to B rather than floundering around from one to another topic never smoothly progressing toward the ultimate goal. I am well on my way to become an excellent public speaker.

Editorial Review:

Good public speakers are made, not born - or so thinks Dale Carnegie, the pioneer of personal business skills. Yet business, social and personal satisfaction depend heavily upon a person's ability to communicate clearly. Public speaking is an important skill which anyone can acquire and develop. It is also the very best method of overcoming self-consciousness and building up courage, enthusiasm and self-confidence. This classic, well established title has been called 'the most brilliant book of its kind'. It takes you step by step through: acquiring basic skills; developing confidence; speaking effectively the quick and easy way; earning the right to talk; vitalising your talk; and sharing the talk with the audience as well as organisation, presentation and other skills.

Editorial Review:

In the more than fifteen years since its publication, the classic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has become an international phenomenon with over fifteen million copies sold. Tens of millions of people in business, government, schools, and families, and, most important, as individuals have dramatically improved their lives and organizations by applying the principles of Stephen R. Covey's classic book.

The world, though, is a vastly changed place. The challenges and complexity we all face in our relationships, families, professional lives, and communities are of an entirely new order of magnitude.

Being effective as individuals and organizations is no longer merely an option -- survival in today's world requires it. But in order to thrive, innovate, excel, and lead in what Covey calls the new Knowledge Worker Age, we must build on and move beyond effectiveness. The call of this new era in human history is for greatness; it's for fulfillment, passionate execution, and significant contribution.

Accessing the higher levels of human genius and motivation in today's new reality requires a sea change in thinking: a new mind-set, a new skill-set, a new tool-set -- in short, a whole new habit. The crucial challenge of our world today is this: to find our voice and inspire others to find theirs. It is what Covey calls the 8th Habit.

So many people feel frustrated, discouraged, unappreciated, and undervalued -- with little or no sense of voice or unique contribution. The 8th Habit is the answer to the soul's yearning for greatness, the organization's imperative for significance and superior results, and humanity's search for its "voice." Profound, compelling, and stunningly timely, this groundbreaking new book of next-level thinking gives a clear way to finally tap the limitless value-creation promise of the Knowledge Worker Age.

Covey's new book will transform the way we think about ourselves and our purpose in life, about our organizations, and about humankind. Just as The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People helped us focus on effectiveness, The 8th Habit shows us the way to greatness.

Inspirational and Loving Life Story! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you saw the Hughes family on the ABC TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" this past February (2008) you may have wondered who they were and why they where chosen. The bigger story is however much deeper and more loving and certainly one that is most inspirational. The book " I Am Potential: Eight Lessons on Living, Loving, and Reaching Your Dreams" is a wonderful true life tale as told to Bryant Stamford by Patrick Henry Hughes and his father Patrick John Hughes. It goes well beyond just telling you who this family is and what makes Patrick Henry so special - it gives depth to the family experiences and gives the reader a look at something very special indeed.

This book is about how a young man, who has not only over come his disabilities, but inspired a community; and now, he inspires an entire nation with his positive zest for life. It also shows how his father coped and dealt with it and how the whole family made it work. This is one of those feel good stories that would make a great feature movie by Disney. The story is uplifting and not about what is wrong, or what someone cannot do. It is a positive message that makes the greater family of mankind feel better.

I enjoyed reading the book but I also found it impossible not to love this young man and to wish him all the best. He may be in a wheel chair and unable to see with his eyes - but he is moving others at light speed towards something much greater within their own selves. The book has a spiritual message without any lectures or ego driven, self-serving attitudes - it is honesty and pure love!

This book has gotten the highest book rating of FIVE STARS from "The American Authors Association" and is on my short list of recommended must read books! I give this my personal endorsement. This is a book that all family members can read.

Not quite as easy a read as I was lead to believe in the reviews. But definitely an excellent overview of mindfulness. I liked how it pointed out the pitfalls some beginners run into. I liked how they outlined the variety of ways meditation can be practiced. I would recommend this book to other beginners.
