Editorial Review:

Since depression sometimes responds well to drugs, it's natural to think that, without medicinal intervention, we're helpless in the face of it. Like John Tarrant's groundbreaking Light Inside the Dark, Philip Martin's The Zen Path Through Depression offers a powerful alternative. A psychiatric social worker having recovered from depression himself, Martin is a sympathetic voice, urging the reader not to escape from depression or fight against it but to face it and work through it. He says that the mindfulness exercises appended to each short section of his book are optional, but they seem essential. It's true that the book could stand alone with its one- and two-page sections devoted to trenchant explorations of fear, death, sufficiency, choice. But the exercises bring you through the quagmire of depression and back into life. They are true experiences that untie knots impervious to thought alone. Instead of thinking your thoughts, you watch them, and where they can take you finally is back into joyful living. --Brian Bruya

Editorial Review:

The Sensitive Person's Survival Guide is an outstanding contribution to body-mind healing and has our highest recommendation. Dr. Mesich explains the relationship between emotional sensitivity and psychic awareness in clear, accessible language, showing that such abilities should not be discredited but rather developed as genuine gifts.”—Patricia Kaminski, Executive Director, The Flower Essence Society

The Sensitive Person's Survival Guide presents a radically new way of looking at emotional sensitivity, chronic depression and anxiety. Through her own experiences and courageous research, Dr. Kyra Mesich, a traditionally-trained psychologist, found that psychic sensitivity is the underlying key to understanding emotional sensitivity.

Dr. Mesich focuses on empathic ability (also known as psychic feeling), which is the ability to literally feel other people’s emotional experiences. This misunderstood ability often results in recurrent depression, anxiety and the painful aspects of emotional sensitivity due in part to society’s denial and repression of the existence of psychic phenomena.

With simple, down-to-earth language and examples, The Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide demystifies empathic ability and explains the relationship between emotional sensitivity and psychic sensitivity.

Readers learn specific alternative health remedies and practices to immediately implement in their own lives to rebalance their sensitivity and reconnect with their empathic ability. Armed with this knowledge, readers will experience relief from mysterious lifelong emotional suffering and turn their sensitivity into strength and joy!

“People suffer in countless ways from their sensitivity, depression being the most common, and most are never properly diagnosed, only medicated. The Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide gave me a ray of hope that the day is coming when the maladies of empathic people will be taken seriously and treated in a more realistic way.”—Echo Bodine, author of Echoes of the Soul

Content not advised during depression! 5 out of 5 stars.

Describes Post Partum Depression

WARNING! Depression hurts and those who do suffer depression may not enjoy this because the main content is her struggle downward. The majority of this book is on the downward trending patterns. This is not happy reading. Do not read this if you just had a baby; do not gift this book to a person who you think has post partum depression and you just want them to "see" that depression is treatable. This is definitely NON-pregnancy reading.

If you have never been able to explain the magnitude and self loathing of depression, Brooke has done it for you. She spends a lot of time describing the slippery slope of feeling out of sorts and not very excited into feeling your absolute and unexplainable worst. In the audio version she reads the story herself and it really does get across the stymied feelings of those around her who could not understand what was going on. She should be on top of the world. Instead she felt it was on top of her.

She documents her way through the maze of depression and page after page you keep saying to yourself "And the Doctor was not on to this???". I think that is part of the point of her writing this, normal healthy people can get very serious depression and the people around them do not know how to react and they do not put depression into the mix. They just work around the equation hoping that this will pass. In her case it was never going to pass on its own.

She covers the awful trip back to herself and how as a person she was as perplexed at how to "feel better" as those around her were to have her be better. This is at times a story you want to speed up and skip over more and more of the exhaustive recounting. Again that is the point of the story- depression is an exhaustive journey.

We recommend the audio more that the written word because it has Brook telling her own story and you can feel her emotions as she tells her story. We also recommend that you buy this discounted because it is not a body work that you keep in your collection unless this topic is related to your field. For the average reader: this is a read and pass it along to another book or an ah-ha! reading to explain something that you may have already have gone through. Editorial Review:

In this compelling memoir, Brooke Shields talks candidly about her experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, and provides millions of women with an inspiring example of recovery hen Brooke Shields welcomed her newborn daughter, Rowan Francis, into the world, something unexpected followed-a crippling depression. Now, for the first time ever, in Down Came the Rain, Brooke talks about the trials, tribulations, and finally the triumphs that occurred before, during, and after the birth of her daughter.

Total Garbage 1 out of 5 stars.

If there is anyway to make a quick dollar today, its for some moronic MD to write another book about the use of anti-depressents. I really wish that people would stopped reading this garbage, and just do what they feels is right, and stop believing everything someone says just because they have the letter MD in front of their name. The reason I take this personally is that I have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and these drugs have saved my life. I have tried everything, from exercise, to herbals, to vitimins, to theropy, and even though they help, w/o the drugs, I am unable to function. Yes, it is true, these are some strong drugs, and doctors do Overpriscribe them, yet at the same time, they can do wonders for people who dont react well to "Alternitive Theropy" so the person can live a normal life. Every drug has side effects, and little is known about long lasting effects. Does this mean that people with other diseases shouldn't take Meds, should they sufefer and Die because of side effects from Meds, or do you take a chance and possibly live longer. DOnt believe the hype with these [...]. The human brain is still the one body part that doctors are still puzzled with, and little is known of why stuff happens to it. Take your meds, dont suffer, live longer, and tell Peter R. Breggin to go [..](oh yes that is anger created by the use of Effexor..)

Editorial Review:

Known as "the Ralph Nader of psychiatry," Dr. Peter Breggin has been the medical expert in countless court cases involving the use or misuse of psychoactive medications. This unusual position has given him unprecedented access to private pharmaceutical research and correspondence files, information from which informs this straight-talking guide to the most prescribed and controversial category of American drugs: antidepressants. From how these drugs work in the brain to how they treat (or don't treat) depression and obsessive-compulsive, panic, and other disorders; from the documented side and withdrawal effects to what every parent needs to know about antidepressants and teenagers, The Anti-Depressant Fact Book is up-to-the minute and easy-to-access. Hard-hitting and enlightening, every current, former, and prospective antidepressant-user will want to read this book.

Editorial Review:

"A reader on melancholy," the editor calls this book: a collection of 22 modern essays about depression by writers (several well known) who know their subject intimately. Some face depression as a sudden interruption of a previously gratifying life; others have never known life without it. Their words wrestle to express their vision, their gloom, their attempts to cope, their interactions, their isolation, and, often, their reactions to medications. Some attempt to analyze their depression; others just want you to know what it's like. Besides the essays by writers who have experienced depression firsthand, editor Nell Casey (also a writer of one of the chapters) includes a few essays by their spouses and siblings about what it was like to live with a person suffering from depression.

The writers' descriptions of "dwelling in depression's dark wood" (William Styron) are disturbing and haunting, laden with vivid imagery. "My heart pumped dread," writes Lesley Dormen. David Karp describes his depression as sometimes a "grief knot" in his throat, sometimes chest pain like a heart attack, sometimes "an awful heaviness" in his eyes and head. From her teenage years, Darcey Steinke would wrap herself in an old comforter and lie in a fetal position on top of her shoes in the closet (her brother called this her "poodle bed"). Nancy Mairs describes being institutionalized: "Lock [a woman] into a drab and dirty space with dozens of other wayward souls, make sure that she is never alone, feed her oatmeal and bananas until her bowels are starched solid, drug her to the eyeballs so that she can scarcely read or speak, and threaten to shoot bolts of electricity through her brain." If you want to know depression from the inside, from thoroughly gifted writers, you'll find it here. --Joan Price

Compassionately Destigmatizes Medication 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I wish every Christian would read this book. I have encountered so many well-meaning, misinformed Christians who dismiss mood disorders, particularly depression, as soley a spiritual problem for people who simply don't have enough faith to overcome it. It is equally disheartening to hear Christians ignorantly tout that schizophrenics--or others who suffer from psychotic breaks--are demon-possessed. Real people living with certain neurochemical imbalances have been spiritually abused and traumatized by over-zealous, super-spirtual Christians attempting to "cast out their demons in the name of Jesus." I would specifically encourage ministers and lay counselors who are in the business of understanding the human condition and offering help to broken hearts to become students of the delicate interplay of spirituality, neurochemistry, and environment.

Paul Meier compassionately and expertly discusses the biochemical workings of the brain that contribute to such experiences and offers practical hope for people living with neurochemical imbalances. He interweaves Scripture throughout the book and explains how spiritual problems such as bitterness and unforgiveness, can, in fact, drain the brain of neurochemicals, such as serotonin. Other times, genetics can predispose people to chemical imbalances. I laughed when Dr. Meier mentioned that of all the "demon-possessed" patients he's treated, 99% of them have responded favorably to medication. He reasons, that unless demons are allergic to medications, the behavioral disturbances must be organic in nature.

Another favorite story of mine in the book is that of a woman who presented in his clinic with depression and anxiety. After days of therapy, her therapists were stumped. They had been unsuccessful in uncovering the root of her symptoms. So Paul Meier prayed that God would show them, and that night, in a dream, Jesus came to Paul and told him that this lady had had an abortion seven years earlier. He casually mentioned it to her the next day, and she dismissed the abortion as no big deal. In her mind, there was no way that could possbily impacting her now. Well, he asked her to go ahead and journal about the experience, and bingo, she was able to make the connection, grieve over that sin, and experience some healing and relief from her symptoms.

So I found the book to be both spiritually and practically balanced, compassionate, destigmatizing, and hope-filled. I love how he compares neurochemical imbalances to being no different than hypertension or diabetes. People don't usually blink at having to take meds for those phsysiological disorders; why is Prozac any different?

He also included a chapter on nutritional and vitamin supplements that can often improve symptoms w/o the use of medication. And for those who may be averse to the idea of taking medication and who may want to try natural remedies first, I recommend the book, The Brain Chemistry Diet, written by psychiatrist Michael Lesser.

Editorial Review:

Many common psychological problems, such as depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and ADHD, can be linked to chemical imbalances in the brain. Dr. Paul Meier, whose clinic treats thousands of people per week, has written Blue Genes to help find answers for those who struggle. Through fascinating case studies, Dr. Meier shows the dramatic difference counseling and medicine can make. This empowering book addresses how genetics, environment, diet, fitness, and spirituality all affect our minds and our quality of life.

Editorial Review:

Bipolar disorder, a brain disorder characterized by intense high and low moods, is a complex illness that is often difficult to identify. Each year, at least 2.3 million Americans suffer from its most severe form, while an estimated 10–13 million others suffer from milder forms. Yet, many go misdiagnosed or untreated. In Bipolar Disorder Demystified, author Lana Castle, who has lived most of her life with this illness, turns her personal experience into an enlightening and useful guide for all those traveling down the same path. In clear and compassionate language, Castle helps those who suffer from the illness as well as their friends and family understand the true nature of bipolar disorder, the factors that complicate its diagnosis, and the best ways to cope with it. Bipolar Disorder Demystified makes great strides in dispelling the mystery surrounding this illness, helping readers decide if it’s time to seek treatment and providing those with any form of mood disorder the information they need to better manage their lives.

As a teenager with depression I selected this book, not knowing what it was like. Well I started to read it and it all made sence. Every chapter focuses on a differnt part of depression, what it does or what you can do. Some things seem a little easy for an older teenager, bur still helpful. I see that as being able to help all adolcents, at differnt ages. Easy to read and easy to understand.

Editorial Review:

Interactive workbook, for teens, explores ways to deal with suicidal thoughts, change negative behaviors, reach out to friends and family, reduce stress, avoid substance abuse, solve problems, recognize triggers of depression, and focus on dreams and goals. Includes tips, brain-storming activities, checklists, and more. Softcover.
