Inspired by a vintage book, this delightful guide deciphers dreams to predict the future. It compiles over 1,000 dream symbols and reveals what they portend for the dreamer. This gilded, faux-leather book is irresistible to pick up; its content is so compelling, it's impossible to put down.

Techniques to Achieve Higher Consciousness 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

LaBerge begins where his first book, LUCID DREAMING, left off, by recapping exactly what lucid dreaming is: the mind realizing that it is dreaming while the body remains asleep, producing a far more vivid dreamscape, one that can be controlled with enough practice.

The book is first and foremost a user's guide: how can we access that wonderfully altered state called the lucid dream? Drawing upon his own research at the Lucidity Institute at Stanford University, as well as techniques drawn from psychology and Tibetan dream yoga, LaBerge has dozens of suggestions for entering the greatest themepark in existence: our dreaming brains. We dream about one-third of our entire lives, so why not make use of this time to enhance the quality of one's life?

LaBerge provides a great deal of sound psychology behind his explanations and techniques, explaining the basic reasons why all humans dream in the first place. He acknowledges that lucid dreaming may be used for pure enjoyment if we want experience adventure, pleasure, or romance. Likewise, he notes that lucid dreaming can also be used to embrace our darker sides (as Jung suggested), turning darker dreams and nightmares into learning experiences to enhance self-knowledge and confidence, ultimately producing personality integration. Additionally, lucid dreaming may be used to practice for athletic or artistic events of any kind. There's simply no limit to the applications of "waking dreams."

LaBerge goes beyond these applications, however, to more serious considerations, showing that lucid dreaming can have the same type of transformative effect on people as near-death experiences if we surrender our egos and allow the dream to take us where it wants instead of trying to always control it. It is in these exciting chapters that we see lucid dreaming as a tremendous technique to reach states of higher consciousness without gurus, how-to books, or seminars. It's all right within our brains.

Some of the techniques are very simple, such as "reality checks" during the day, when we ask ourselves whether or not we are dreaming. Others are as easy as autosuggestion or keeping a dream diary to increase dream recall (very important in all techniques). Other techniques get a bit more involved and can be frustrating (although LaBerge has since manufactured several kinds of dream masks worn at bedtime which detect REM sleep and signal the brain that it is dreaming via tiny blinking lights that do not awaken the dreamer).

Other metaphysical aspects are discussed, such as whether or not the physical body can be healed of disease if the dream body is healed since lucid dreams tap into the brain at a very deep level. And can we share lucid dreams with others or make contact with other dreamers who are aiming for the same dream traget on any given night? LaBerge even notes that he has had at least one precognitive lucid dream that probably saved his son's life.

The practice of lucid dreaming has become more popular over the past decade, but this book remains the most reliable source of information on the phenomenon as well as the best place to research ways to enter the lucid dream state.

It's probably the finest, most comprehensive book on dreams that's in print.

Editorial Review:

"[A] solid how-to book...For amateur dream researchers, this is a must."
WHOLE EARTH REVIEW
This book goes far beyond the confines of pop dream psychology, establishing a scientifically researched framework for using lucid dreaming--that is, consciously influencing the outcome of your dreams. Based on Dr. Stephen LaBerge's extensive laboratory work at Stanford University mapping mind/body relationships during the dream state, as well as the teachings of Tibetan dream yogis and the work of other scientists, including German psycholgist Paul Tholey, this practical workbook will show you how to use your dreams to: Solve problems; Gain greater confidence; improve creativity, and more.

On the unconscious 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have previously read only one book on dream interpretation and think this one is excellent. I've always steered away from dream interpretation because I thought they were too mental for me. I am by nature an intellectual and caught up in daydreaming most of the time anyway. But Johnson tells me to bring feeling and body into the interpretation process, and that I like.

He also warned against passive daydreaming concerning any real person for they will feel something over the collective unconscious. Compared inner work to marching around the walls of Jericho -- conquering a psychic center might take years of persistent work.

All in all: simple and concise. I recommend it.

The Perfect Book for learning Active Imagination 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a fantastic guide to doing Active Imagination. If you are new to the ideas of Carl Jung, this book has the introduction that you need. I have used the techniques from this book on many occasions, and I know I will keep going back to it. Active Imagination has helped me in working with my compulsions and in understanding my bad habits. This is not a 'self-help' book with catchy slogans and common-sense rephrased kind of book. I found that although dreams and day-dreams seem to be nothing but nonsense, this book helps you to find the hidden treasures in that 'nonsense'.

Missing Pages Found 2 out of 5 stars.

Looking up a dream just happened to be a topic missing in the book. Not one but several consecutive pages are missing. How many other dreams will I not be able to find? I want to exchange it for another book but I haven't had the time to pick a substitute. I'm glad I didn't just settle for one book.

Vague and useless 1 out of 5 stars.

This book offers no help in interpreting a dream. For instance unders "sister" it says "points to a close female relationship." So, what does that mean if I dream of my sister? Under cat it says "(domestic/wild) pertains to one's quality or type of independence. See specific type such as cheetah, Chesire, calico, etc." What about a mongrel cat? Again how does this description help me define my dream's meaning? I am extremely disappointed in this book.

One of the Best on the Market 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This dream dictionary is one of the best on the market that I have found. I only wish she could have been more detailed in some of her descriptions. Some definitions are pretty vague. In all, a very good dream dictionary, especially for someone who is a beginner at dream interpretation.

My Go To Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the book I always pick up when I need to understand my own dream symbology. I also use this book when I receive images during meditation. I almost always get that ah-ha feeling after I've read her interpretation and which allows me to move forward toward understanding my own symbology. I have 2 other dream dictionaries but they do not come close to my personal dream symbology like this one does. I'm so happy to see that it resonates with others as well. I've owned this book for 2 years and it's pretty worn, but it's mine and I enjoy it.

Teaches the basics of Dream Interpretation... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Dream interpretation is sticky, and even more so for a Christian. How do you interpret dreams with out getting into New Age mumbo jumob? For years I had troubling dreams, and now I just have regular dreams. Still, I had a hunger for knowing what my dreams meant. People like Frued would say they are probably just expressing your deepest inner desires. Psycology says there is no real purpose to dreams, but Christians who believe the Bible, know otherwise.

Most churches wont touch this subject with a ten foot pole, which is a shame because for many people, dreams is the principle way that God speaks to them. So, what do you do? How can you know what your dreams mean?

If finding Godly people who understand dream interpretation are short in your area, there are some reliable books you can read! Steer clear of any non-Christian publication because they will steer you away from God. A Bible based study on dream interpretation will guide you back to the Bible and to prayer.

This book will give you guidelines on how to interpret dreams, but it will NOT interpret them for you. That is between you and God. It gives you some helpful meanings to things that are generally universal in meaning such as: colors, numbers, rooms/buildings, animals, and many other objects or places that may occur in your dreams. Some other useful books include Dream Language: The Prophetic Power of Dreams which explains the nature of the dream according to the Bible, and explains in legnth guidelines for interpreting dreams. Also useful is The Illustrated Bible-Based Dictionary of Dream Symbols, it is basically another dictionary, but it is nice to be able to compare this dictionary to Mr. Milligan's book. I would also suggest Vol. 2 Every Dreamer's Handbook: A Simple Guide to Understanding Your Dreams (Understanding the Dreams You Dream, Vol. 2)of this book as well, because more than a dictionary, it explains the various symbols in legnth.

The only thing you really need to interpret your dreams is a focus on the Bible and understanding God, and trusting that God will give you the interpretation or guide you to someone who will!!! Have fun!

God Bless ~Amy

Editorial Review:

Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self is the account of an extraordinarily talented lucid dreamer who goes beyond the boundaries of both psychology and religion. In the process, he stumbles upon the Inner Self.

While lucid (consciously aware) in the dream state and able to act and interact with dream figures, objects, and settings, dream expert Robert Waggoner experienced something transformative and unexpected. He was able to interact consciously with the dream observer-the apparent Inner Self-within the dream. At first this seemed shocking, even impossible, since psychology normally alludes to such theoretical inner aspects as the Subliminal Self, the Center, the Internal Self-Helper in vague and theoretical ways. Waggoner came to realize, however, that aware interaction with the Inner Self was not only possible, but actual and highly inspiring. He concluded that while aware in the dream state, one has both a psychological tool and a platform from which to understand dreaming and the larger picture of man's psyche as well. Waggoner proposes 5 stages of lucid dreaming and guides readers through them, offering advice for those who have never experienced the lucid dream state and suggestions for how experienced lucid dreamers can advance to a new level.

Lucid Dreaming offers exciting insights and vivid illustrations that will intrigue not only avid dreamworkers but anyone who is interested in consciousness, identity, and the definition of reality.
