Hope for Those Wanting to be a Normal Eating 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in the process of overcoming a long term eating disorder. Having been both anorexic and overweight, this book has offered me hope in teaching me to read my bodie's clues and to begin to trust them. I appreciate that while the author is honest in saying that becoming a normal eater requires hard work, she also impart's hope to both those who have totally learned to ignore their body's clues that they are full and those who have have learned to ignore physcial hunger and have lived under the tyranny of food diaries and counting calories and fat grams.

Editorial Review:

Written in easy-to-understand, everyday language, The Rules of “Normal” Eating lays out the four basic rules that "normal" eaters follow instinctively — eating when they're hungry, choosing foods that satisfy them, eating with awareness and enjoyment, and stopping when they're full or satisfied. Along with specific skills and techniques that help promote change, the book presents a proven cognitive-behavioral model of transformation that targets beliefs, feelings, and behaviors about food and eating and points the way toward genuine physical and emotional fulfillment. Readers learn how to reprogram their dysfunctional beliefs, manage uncomfortable feelings without turning to food, and establish new eating habits that tune their bodies into natural sensations of hunger, pleasure, satisfaction, and satiation. Filled with humorous insights, compassion, and practical wisdom, the book outlines balanced attitudes and patterns that benefit all types of eaters.

Don't waste your time or money 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is not what I expected. It's more of a "workbook" instead of a book to read. I was thoroughly disappointed.

Finally No More Diets! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.

My mom told me about Geneen Roth when I was in my early twenties and she stopped dieting then and never struggled with food since, but I couldn't give up that the next diet would be the miracle that I needed! I was at most lowest point recently and read another book of Geneen's 'When Food Is Love.' I was hooked! That book was a great read, but this allows you to do the work.

I've finally given up the word 'diet' in my vocabulary, in my life.

Editorial Review:

After Feeding the Hungry Heart and Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating, Roth offers a workbook that will enable readers to explore for themselves the issues that lead to compulsive eating.

Why I Eat The Way I DO.....(New Thoughts) 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am not known for my reading abilities but this was an "easy" read!
Sometimes, Geneen seemed to go into a lot of "personal" stories that might seem like she was losing tract of the purpose of her book. I was often able to see the reason behind it as she was trying to drive a point across by relating her stories (and others') so that the reader can see the relationship between food and love. Overall, I think there were some very good points that she brought out that I never would have seen or thought of had it not been for this book.

Unbelievably Insightful!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow,wow, wow. I purchased this book because it was suggested to me from a friend about a year ago I finally bought it and I am so glad I did. I am a very skeptical person when it comes to self help books, but I have to say this wasn't a self help book at all. Roth makes you truly examine yourself by sharing her story and then asking questions that make you think about why we do the things we do (eat). What feelings are we surpressing? THIS BOOK IS NOT A "HOW TO GUIDE" - it just tells her story and other people stories and I bet anyone could find a piece of themselves in this book. It was funny and light hearted, not drab and psychological. I loved it so much I couldn't put it down and I ended up ordering 2 more of her books - Breaking Free of Emotional & Compulsive Eating.

If nothing else, the book is a great read. I highly recommend it.

  • Are you a food addict?
  • Do you gain more weight than you lose after every diet?
  • Can one cookie destroy all your good intentions?
  • Do you eat when you are disappointed, tense or anxious?

Since its publication, Food Addiction has become a primary resource for food addicts and compulsive eaters. Now it is updated and presented in a revised and expanded edition, with a new chapter on relapse. For a food addict, relapse is an ever present danger which begins in the mind before reaching for that cupcake or other trigger food.

Here food addiction is defined, trigger foods are identified and consequences of food addiction are revealed. A lifetime eating plan demonstrating how to stick with a healthful food plan for the long term is also provided.

"For some people, foods can be as addictive as alcohol," Kay Sheppard explains. "Gummy bears and marshmallow chicks can be vicious killers whose effects can lead to depression, irritability and even suicide. The terrible truth is that for certain individuals, refined carbohydrates can trigger the addictive process. This book is an effort to help you understand and solve the problems of compulsive eating."

Help me get back on track! 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I purchased Dr. Fairburn's book about 5 years ago. By faithfully writing my food down daily and following his program, i stopped binge eating for over a year!

Since that time, I have fallen off of the 'program' and am out of control with my eating again. I have tried WW, but my weight loss was only temporary and i began to binge and gained everything back. I've attempted to get back 'on the Fairburn program' several times, but I'll start keeping track and monitor my food by writing...and then, i'll start to slip and stop writing. The rest of the story goes downhill.

I know success is possible as I proved to myself by not binging for a year that i could gain control over my binging.

I want to re-dedicate myself to this program and I'm looking to gain the support of others who have this book, are just buying it or have been using it with success.

    Editorial Review:

Aimee Liu, who wrote Solitaire, the first-ever memoir of anorexia, in 1979, returns to the subject nearly three decades later and shares her story and those of the many women in her age group of life beyond this life-altering ailment. She has extensively researched the origins and effects of both anorexia and bulimia, and dispels many commonly held myths about these diseases with the persuasive conclusion that anorexia is a result of personality.
Key revelations include: the temperament required for eating disorders, the long-term effects of eating disorders on health, brain function, relationships and career, why some individuals recover while others relapse, and why many relapse in mid-life,Which treatment approaches are most successful long-term and how parents can tell if a child will be vulnerable to eating disorders.
Using her own experience and the stories of many recovering anorexics she's interviewed, Liu weaves together a narrative that is both persuasive in argument and compelling in personal details.

Very Informative Book 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Of the books I've read about eating disorders, this is probably the most informative one regarding explanations of what eating disorders are. This is an excellent resource for anyone with a young child or teenager with an eating disorder. I did find their advice about leaving your job to stay home with your child or going to their school to eat with them to be a bit impractical, but overall think the book is a valuable resource.

    Editorial Review:

Always harmful and potentially deadly, eating disorders can wreak havoc on families. Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

who threw a tantrum because this book included Christian principles and therefore gave it only one star. It's very easy to read and makes VERY CLEAR points. You can not read this book and fail to understand codependency (which most of us suffer to some small degree) and the solutions. If you don't agree with a few small points, don't whine and just skip them. Excellent, excellent book.

No matter where you are in your walk in life, no matter what your relationships with others is like, you will derive value in reading this book. It is introspective, uplifing and perfect for a quiet weekend alone.

    Editorial Review:

Love Is a Choice Workbook provides a ten-stage plan to help you find healing from the pain that created your codependency and then guides you through the plan using interactive questions, self-tests, exercises, and journaling. This workbook helps you to step back and examine your life and then effectively deal with your codependency at your own pace. It can be used independently, or with Love Is a Choice, to help you break the cycle of codependency and be free to make new choices--free to choose love.
