Self-indulgent, neurotic pop-psychology drivel. NOT for hard-core food addicts 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Garbage. 98% of this book is pure, unadulterated, contradictory bull----. First, the author claims in Chapter 2 that food addiction is biological. Although she's got the basic science right, that chapter is SO badly-written that the author, apparently realizing that, felt the need to use another several pages to re-explain the whole thing all over again "in a simpler way" at the end of the same chapter. Slogging through Chapter 2 was akin to reading a third-grader's essay in which the student piece-mealed the information from various encyclopediae and other sources in bits and pieces, but didn't quite "get" it herself enough to write clearly or coherently.

In what seems to be an escape from scientific concepts she doesn't understand, the author then abandons the whole biological aspect for most of the rest of the book, and drifts off into useless psychobabble for chapter after unending chapter of self-indulgent pity-party-promotion.

Most of the other 15 chapters in this book are devoted to statements that the real cause of food addiction is an awful, deprived childhood filled with abusive and mean, neglectful, absent parents. According to Ms. Katherine, all food addicts got that way by being emotional basket cases and pathetic abused wrecks: "Sit back in a comfortable chair with a teddy bear or pillow. Wrap your arms around yourself and the bear or pillow. Close your eyes. Send yourself warm, loving thoughts. Give yourself some sympathy for how hard it's been to handle this difficult problem all by yourself." Or this: "When a child isn't held enough, she experiences a deficit. It's horrible then if the child is ridiculed, ignored, or hit for asking to be held. ... She then learns her need leads to pain and punishment and will likely aim her wrong interpretation against herself..."

It only gets much, much worse from there.

Inconsistent with her own early chapter about the bio factors in food addiction (which frankly she doesn't seem to quite understand herself), the author advocates STAGED abstinence - abstain from sugar for a full year, THEN begin abstinence from refined carbohydrates. Meanwhile, it's ok to eat more of other things as long as you're not eating the sugars. Oh, puhleeze!! This is like telling an alcoholic: "Ok, first you have to abstain from hard liquor for a year, but you can keep drinking beer and wine, even more of them if you need to. Meanwhile we'll discuss all the ways you were abused as a child. THEN you can stop drinking for real." Yeah, right.

Addiction is addiction, period. You are simply not going to deal with the biochemical processes involved in food addiction unless you eliminate the chemical triggers completely - ALL sugars, refined carbs, wheat, and high-fat foods.

This author's "plan" is tortuous and unrealistic. She discusses a conversation you are to have with family members, in which you are to state that you will not be capable of making decisions for at least 3 weeks after starting your sugar withdrawal. Hello? Stop real life, just like that, while you walk a cravings-crazy chemical tightrope of half-abstinent hell.

Don't waste your money on this book. Instead, get real information and real solutions from a true expert, someone like Kay Sheppard in Food Addiction: The Body Knows: Revised & Expanded Edition, and From the First Bite: A Complete Guide to Recovery from Food Addiction, in which the genetic tie-ins and biochemistry of food addiction are simply explained, and immediate total abstinence is recommended, along with providing a detailed, real, workable plan which really does work to eliminate cravings fast and promote clear thinking and recovery.

Editorial Review:

HOPE, HELP, AND A REAL EXPLANATION FOR THE DISEASE OF FOOD ADDICTION

If you have struggled with compulsive eating, dieting, and the guilt and conflict they bring, your life will be changed by this important, life-affirming, and astonishingly wise book.

going hungry 5 out of 5 stars.

Anorexia requires withholding--from the self, from others. This book opens up this world of secrets and deceptions. It is ranging and searching--touching on history, ecstasy, motherhood, illness, creativity, and a host of other subjects. The writers have a multitude of experiences and perspectives, and their reasons for denying themselves food are manifold. But each essayist manages to write directly and to illuminate a new aspect of an elusive and epidemic disease. An important, generous, fascinating book.

Editorial Review:

Here, collected for the first time, 19 writers describe their eating disorders from the distance of recovery, exposing as never before the anorexic's self-enclosed world. Taking up issues including depression, genetics, sexuality, sports, religion, fashion and family, these essays examine the role anorexia plays in a young person's search for direction. Powerful and immensely informative, this collection makes accessible the mindset of a disease that has long been misunderstood.

With essays by Priscilla Becker, Francesca Lia Block, Maya Browne, Jennifer Egan, Clara Elliot, Amanda Fortini, Louise Glück, Latria Graham, Francine du Plessix Gray, Trisha Gura, Sarah Haight, Lisa Halliday, Elizabeth Kadetsky, Maura Kelly, Ilana Kurshan, Joyce Maynard, John Nolan, Rudy Ruiz, and Kate Taylor.

A New Possibility for Healing 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

As a person who suffered from anorexia and bulimia in my younger years, I find Dr. Ira Sacker's book on eating disorders wonderful. It contains powerful information to help sufferers of eating disorders gain insight on their condition and heal themselves.

According to the author one of the factors that trigger anorexia are the judgments that one has on oneself, the belief that one is "not" perfect and the quest for never attainable perfection. The persons afflicted with the disease are plagued with the idea that they are flawed and that life will only get better when they reach an ideal weight.

This "cursed" way of thinking is not only symptomatic of people who suffer from an eating disorder. For me, what made all the difference was finding a place of acceptance of myself where I stopped working on myself and striving to reach unrealistic goals. The book Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation by Ariel and Shya Kane really supported me in discovering that place and transformed my life. The Kanes bring the message that we are perfect just the way we are and that if we can stop listening to those delusional conversations in our heads about our imperfections, life can transform instantaneously into an exciting adventure.

If you are or have been suffering from an Eating Disorder and are looking to strengthen your ability to be yourself, experience satisfaction and live free of neurotic behavior, I urge you to look into the work of Ariel and Shya Kane (they have written 2 other books How To Create a Magical Relationship and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment). They bring a very real and instantaneous possibility for Healing that very few people have had the chance to experience.

Healing emotional hunger one step at a time 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

Before the image of an OA meeting being filled with obese people fills your mind ... think again. An overeater can be anyone ... fashion model ... successful accountant in a size 8 ... fitness trainer ... midly plump dental assistant ... anyone. The causes and reasons are different. Overeating is not a lack of willpower but an emotional relationship to food that has someone not know when to stop. Eating is natural, overeating needs to be addressed so as to protect our very health. This wonderful "bible" for Overeaters Anonymous helps those in recovery work their healing one day at a time. Whether at a meeting, or in a personal inventory, or in working with a sponsor ... this contains elements of surrendering our will power to a higher power. Whether you believe in God or not, the notion of not having to do this alone is a welcome relief for many caught in a viscious circle of emotional medication through misuse of food. The concept of a higher power enables someone to be open to group support and feel the possibility of living a healthier way. This book is a program that is not a quick fix, a diet, or anykind of body makeover technique. What it provides is a way of thinking and living that addresses the root of using food as a drug.

excellent book/resource 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book provides an excellent guide and resouce to health professionals working with this challenging patient group. The new transdiagnostic treatment is well developed and consisely described. The book provides a step by step guide as well as useful treatment strategies to deal with the core psychopathology. Well worth buying.

Editorial Review:

This book provides the first comprehensive guide to the practice of "enhanced" cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E), the latest version of the leading empirically supported treatment for eating disorders. Written with the practitioner in mind, the book demonstrates how this transdiagnostic approach can be used with the full range of eating disorders seen in clinical practice. Christopher Fairburn and colleagues describe in detail how to tailor CBT-E to the needs of individual patients, and how to adapt it for adolescents and patients who require hospitalization. Also addressed are frequently encountered co-occurring disorders and how to manage them. Reproducible appendices feature the Eating Disorder Examination interview and questionnaire.

Editorial Review:

Renowned therapist, eating disorder specialist and recovering food addict Kay Sheppard helps countless individuals win their battles over food addiction-people for whom diets, pills and purging have become a way of life. In 1993, her groundbreaking book, Food Addiction: The Body Knows, explained the illness of food addiction from the physiological origins through recovery.

Today, obesity is on the rise. In addition to the 300,000 overweight people in this country, millions more who may not look overweight are unable to control their eating.

Sheppard's follow-up book, From the First Biteoffers the latest medical insights into food addiction coupled with time-tested, practical advice.

Unlike other books that are very dry in nature, this book includes compelling personal stories and do's and don'ts from other recovering and relapsed food addicts, including the author herself, who began her own recovery in 1967. The book explains how to avoid the physiological and situational triggers that lead to relapse; how to confront the emotional issues behind food cravings; how to establish a balanced food plan that eliminates cravings; and how to avoid hidden dangers in cleverly packaged foods. The book also includes a handy Twelve-Step workbook.

Just as Sheppard's first book broke new ground, her latest work offers a critical first step for food addicts on the road to physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.

Editorial Review:

When her doctor told her she could suffer a stroke just by walking across the street, Susan Blech knew drastic action was called for. She was only 38 years old, and the scale registered a life-threatening 468 pounds. Rejecting the idea of gastric bypass surgery, Susan relocated to Durham, North Carolina, giving up all that was familiar and $70,000 of her life savings to devote herself to losing weight and getting healthy on the famed Rice Diet.
In Confessions of a Carb Queen, Susan Blech speaks candidly about topics no obese person has dared to address: fat sex, eating binges, the lies you tell others, and the lies you tell yourself. She explores the psychological component of overeating and the connection between her own binge eating and the aneurysm that left her mother brain-damaged and paralyzed when Susan was a toddler. Her gripping story—a blend of memoir, advice, and delicious, health-conscious recipes—is a testament to her personal strength and willpower, and will be an inspiration to all who read it.

no title 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The best book I've yet read on compulsive eating. One line touched me to the core. Do I eat to mother myself because I never got any; to nurture myself? Maybe that's why I need a dog, someone who I feel loves me totally and completely as me, not as a daughter or a wife? But this book also showed some very sick people in regards to food, some very bad binges and sneak eating. My life and thought do tend to revolve around food - buying it, cooking it, eating it. The writing is excellent. Roth should really write a novel or something more demanding. She can write well. I do wonder if the writing of other women was not polished up by her.

Editorial Review:

This is how Geneen Roth remembers her time as an emotional overeater and self-starver. After years of struggle, Roth finally broke free from the destructive cycle of bingeing and purging. In the two decades since her triumph, she has gone on to help tens of thousands of others do the same through her lectures, workshops, and retreats. Those she has met during this time have shared stories that are both heartrending and inspiring, which Roth has gathered for this unique book.

Twenty years after its original publication, Feeding the Hungry Heart continues to inspire women and men, helping them win the battle against a hunger that goes deeper than a need for food.

Editorial Review:

A guided journal to help overeaters get to the heart and soul of their eating patterns.

Debbie Danowski guides readers through approximately sixty writing exercises on topics such as fear, shame, forgiveness, progress, abstinence, and goals. The Overeater's Journal is divided into three sections: physical, emotional, spiritual and includes a reproducible food log. Many sources were used to identify the need for a journal on this topic, and Danowski has a solid trade and professional presence, which makes her the best choice today to reach readers.

The Overeater's Journal is inspirational and prescriptive. Danowski's knack for lively narrative will make readers feel motivated and hopeful. Her recent book, Locked Up for Eating Too Much was based on her journal entries while going through treatment for an eating disorder. As a recovering food-addict herself, Danowski has a special ability to connect with readers while her credentials as a Ph.D. qualify her to offer concrete assistance that is both professionally sound and very accessible.

Very garbled 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

There is a lot of interesting information in this book, and it's in a field that could use some more interest than it generally gets. Unfortunately the information appears in the middle of a huge mish-mash of every kind of alternative therapies. Reflexology occurs right beside various vitamin therapies, lithium treatment of manic-depression, food allergies and sensitivities, and heavy metal poisoning.

The various causes, and therapies discussed have little or no evaluation of their effectiveness, or history discussed. A fair number of individual cases are discussed, but nothing that would allow a reader to distinguish the obviously helpful from the promising from the complete hookum.

Another problem is that while good nutrition is discussed, and various ways in which supplements (vitamin & other) can help people achieve better health, there is no way given to try to sort out what kinds of supplements might do you some good. There is an exception for a couple of disorders (like alcoholism), where there is a more general discussion of what supplements a heavy drinker should take, particularly if s/he is trying to quit, but in general, no.

Last but not least, the discussion of toxic environments goes beyond unhelpful and into downright alarmist. While maintaining a healthy environment is admitably difficult in this day and age (if not impossible), it does no one any good to be looking at everything they eat, breathe, or touch as a potential toxin. So doing only raises stress levels - which as this book points out, is an environmental/lifestyle problem all its own.

In short - there's some interesting information in here, but it's not worth the effort, and the resultant paranoia from reading the book, to extract it.

Editorial Review:

Many conditions that are generally believed to be purely mental disorders are actually caused by vitamin deficiencies, food allergies, hormonal imbalances, and environmental factors. In this book, the best-selling health and fitness expert who has been called "Mr. Natural" by Time magazine presents nutrition-based treatments for the underlying biochemical imbalances that cause many of today's mental problems.
