This Really IS the Answer 5 out of 5 stars.

Honest. Thoughtful. Insightful. True. Read both Overcoming Overeating and When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies by the same authors, join the online group at Yahoo! Groups, and solve your problems with weight, body image, dieting and all the rest of it. It may not be the answer you thought you were seeking, but it's the real answer. Notice the price, too. The authors are far more concerned with helping us than with raking in the "dough". There's nothing else to buy. There are no gizmos, special foods, diet drinks or powders, pills or pre-packaged meals. Since starting this program a little over two months ago I'm feeling so much more at peace, in control, and happy. And I'm not even doing it completely right! I'm just doing what I can! If you're sick of your weight "problem" this book will give you the plan that solves it for good.

Editorial Review:

Diet/binge. good food/bad food. punishment/reward. In an updated edition, here is the ground-breaking, step-by-step plan that doesn’t control eating habits but cures them instead, once and for all. Overcoming Overeating will show you how to: Give up dieting forever Eat from true stomach hunger instead of “mouth hunger” Stop overeating and lose weight naturally Move beyond a preoccupation with eating and weight in order to live a more satisfying life

A blessing 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been battling this horrible disease for almost a year now. I am lucky to have sought help a lot quicker than others, and I began reading this book the day I didn't purge for the first time in 3 months. I am on day 3 of no purging right now, and when ever I get stressed or something triggers bulimia, I open this book and read the stuff is says over and over again. I am seeking out a therapist, but this book is helping me stay strong right now. I highly recommend this. I think others might get frustrated with this book because THEY haven't decided to quit. It takes your innerself to quit an addiction, outside sources only help you. If you aren't ready to commit, then I can see why you would not like this book. But no book will make you quit. In addition to being helpful to a bulimic, it had great information that you can photocopy and give to people who want to help you. It really lets them understand all the pain you are going through. Good luck, and remember, you aren't alone.

Editorial Review:

This fifth edition is completely updated and expanded, and offers a complete understanding of bulimia and a plan for recovery. It includes:

o Answers to questions most often asked about bulimia
o Insight from more than 400 recovered and recovering bulimics
o A Three-Week Program to Stop Bingeing
o Specific advice for loved-ones
o Things to do instead of bingeing
o Lindsey Hall’s own inspiring story, "Eat Without Fear"
o Suggestions from professional eating disorders therapists

Very Insightful and Supportive 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book has been a great support for me. I often go back to passages over and over. It is supportive and written in a positive manner. It addresses motivation, making mistakes, forgivness, you name it. I know people that use this book for mediations even if they aren't over eaters. I highly, highly recommend this book!

Great way to start the day 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased the book, FOOD FOR THOUGHT, a few years ago. Elizabeth L. knows what she is talking about. I read a daily meditation each morning and always find something in the writing that pretains to me. If you suffer from compulsive overeating, buy FOOD FOR THOUGHT. It's very inspirational.

Really Helpful 5 out of 5 stars.

The entries are very helpful for a beginner in OA. I have found that the entries stick with me throughout the day and help me to understand concepts that I am struggling with. For example, I had difficulty envisioning abstinence as anything but impossible. After reading a few of the entries on abstinence, I was able to define it in a way that I am comfortable with - abstinence is freedom.

It is a good little book. I cannot speak for long time members of OA, but as a beginner, this book is helpful in finding my own worth away from food.

Traditional 12 step approach 1 out of 5 stars.
55 of 61 people found this review helpful.

After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review. I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating. It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program. While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself. Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging. In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again. I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling. I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book. I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was. If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere. The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

Editorial Review:

"Why can't I stop eating?" If, like millions of others, you often ask yourself this question, you may be addicted to food. The food you eat may be precisely what makes you crave more . . . and more. This straight-talking book puts the widespread problem of food addiction into clear perspective and points the way to a life free of the obsession with food. Debbie Danowski, whose food addiction nearly ruined her life, and Peter Lazaro combine forces to give readers a full understanding of this debilitating condition: its sources, patterns, consequences, and physiological underpinnings. Unlike fad diets and drugs with their side effects, hidden costs, and infamous failure rates, the program outlined in this book goes to the root cause of chronic overeating and puts the tools for a lifelong cure into the hands of anyone willing to accept responsibility for a healthy, happy future.

Excellent 12 Step Companion Book 5 out of 5 stars.
54 of 55 people found this review helpful.

Being in recovery in OA for 6 years and reading the OA and AA 12 & 12's NUMEROUS times, I was looing for something new and fresh to read. This book truly fit the bill. The author really breaks the steps down into many subcategories and delves into issues deeply. Not a substituute for the AA or OA 12 & 12 by any means, but a great "study aid" to the 12 steps.

This book is life altering if you are ready to recover 5 out of 5 stars.

I was shocked to see that there were actually negative reviews on this book.
One of the reviews I read sounds like it was written for another book as the content in the review was not related to any of the people or subjects contained in this book.
... On to what I have to say about this book. This is positively one of the greatest books I have read for overeaters. This is not a diet book, but a healing tool, and a spiritual tool using the twelve steps.
In many ways compulsive overeaters or binge eaters are like alcoholics. It is a compulsive disorder that has so little to do with food. We eat to "stuff" our pain, hurt, anger, fears, regrets, sorrows and disappointments.
Using the tools in this book and going to Overeaters Anonymous I have been binge free for two months. I haven't had any sugar during that time. At one time these both really did seem impossible. But thanks to this wonderful book and the help of OA I am healing. If you have problems with binge eating or compulsive overeating I think this book is well worth the money and more.

Editorial Review:

The author of Food for Thought takes a fresh, in-depth look at the Twelve Steps of Overeaters Anonymous. Each chapter carefully examines and interprets each of the individual Steps.

Definitely not for sufferers 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I got this book without reading the subtitle (Strategies for Family and Friends). I thought it might help me with Binge-Eating problems. It didn't. In fact, I got very bored. It was sickeningly boring and only discussed how to handle things if you weren't really all that involved.

First of all, it's my experience with any kind of mental health problem that you can't give a person help if they don't want the help. They have to make a conscious effort to choose to get help. This book somewhat bypasses this whole thing.

Second, it states what you typically see in an Anorexic -- loss of weight, not eating, etc. Okay, who doesn't know this? If you didn't know this, then you probably wouldn't be picking up the book in the first place.

I really don't think this book would be helpful if I had a friend or family member with an eating disorder. It's very unhelpful in my personal opinion.

Skip this book!

Editorial Review:

Surviving an Eating Disorder became an instant success when it was first published in 1988, not just because it was among the first books to alert America to the serious dangers of a silent but widespread disease, but because it offered effective solutions and support for family and friends of those with eating disorders. Eight years after its publication, the book continues to sell briskly and generate continuing interest from readers.

This new edition has been revised to address the cutting-edge advances made in the field of eating disorders, discuss how the changes in health care have affected treatment and provide additional strategies for dealing with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. It also includes updated readings and a list of support organizations. Without a doubt the best book on the subject, it is required reading for those suffering from eating disorders, their families and professionals.

recommended for Christians! 5 out of 5 stars.

I noticed that the reviews of this book were either really good or really bad. I'm on the "really good" side. Finally a book that treats the real issues and focuses on a right relationship with God as the source of freedom. This book is great for spiritual growth and gives practical help as well. I followed the eating guidelines (basically a set of questions you ask yourself before you eat) and felt that I was set free. I didn't have to fear fattening foods / restaurants / dessert / etc. or count calories. I just ate and stopped when I knew the Lord would want me to. However, it's contingent upon obedience to the Lord, and when my relationship with the Lord grew distant (through other circumstances in my life) my obedience stopped and I went back to my old diet plans ... the ones that work for awhile but lead to obsession and bingeing. The connection between spiritual life and food abuse is clear. I recommend this book because it recognizes the fact that our relationship with the Lord is the root of everything.

left hungry for a real book 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe such a terrible book can be reviewed so highly. I think he didn't say anything everyone who has a problem with food doesn't know. IN fact he doesn't really reveal himself at all. He uses thumor to hide behind rather than tell the truth. How does such a skimpy book get published?. He hints O.A is the only answer to overeating. He never explains what home problems kept his addiction active. I find it cruel to give hope to others with one method while telling us nothing else works. Everyone is differet and what works is different. This book is not quite a memoir, not quite a self help book, not quite a book. It is said to be a non diet book but I felt like I had been put on a skimpy diet with this badly written book. sorry. but I could write a more truthful book in my sleep and I have kept off sixty pounds. Hey, let me write a book. Save your money and time on this one. I felt cheated.

Editorial Review:

Weight loss advice, laughter, and inspiration from the delicious, caloric, yet uncomfortably large life experiences of a formerly fat man.

Allen Zadoff spent years reasoning that a big, healthy man should have a big, healthy appetite and that his rapidly increasing girth was no more than a regular guy thing.

At 350 pounds, however, it became clear that what had started as a little weight problem was destroying his life. Desperate to find a new way of living that would carry him into thin and beyond, Zadoff began to focus less on what he ate, and more on the physical and emotional underpinnings of what he came to understand as a disease. The pounds melted away, and so began the adventure of a lifetime.

Following Zadoff's incredible journey both up and down the scale, Hungry blends his personal story with surprising strategies for weight loss success; it is as laugh-out-loud funny as it is inspirational.
