Editorial Review:

Trying to control your anxious thoughts can backfire, making them more prevalent, not less. The best way to calm these common feelings is by attuning yourself to your thoughts in a nonjudgmental, attentive manner, acknowledging your anxieties but choosing to act rather than react.

From the author of Calming Your Anxious Mind comes this collection of more than sixty-four daily mindfulness-based meditations to help you engage with the present moment, manage stress and anxiety, and rediscover the joy in living. Each meditation contains an easy-to-learn visualization exercise, affirmation, or activity, with meditations grouped into four sections: relaxing and feeling safe, embracing joys and fears, befriending your anxious mind and body, and connecting to the web of life.

"This book is a treasure--nourishing, sustaining, and skillfully crafted. Calling their approach to the release from anxiety `the way of awareness,' the authors have shaped a warm, authentic rendering of mindfulness practice into direct, easily understandable language. Step by step, they lead us into substantive, well-documented methods for becoming intimately familiar with an inner terrain and integrating what is discovered in this interior realm into a way of being that is the key to freeing us from the imprisoning tyranny of anxiety and fear."
-Saki F. Santorelli, Ed.D., executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society and associate professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and author of Heal Thyself

Real, workable solutions. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I've read many, many books on treating panic disorder, but this is the ONLY book that helped me overcome my panic disorder. I only wish I had read it years ago. Panic pretty much ... my life down a black hole -- I was so agoraphobic that for two years I rarely left my bedroom, even to go down the hall to the kitchen. A cognitive-behavioral therapist gave me a copy of this book and took me step by step thru it. It took 8 months of hard, scary work but today I can go anywhere, with or without anyone, and do anything, for as long as I want, whenever I want --not a medication in sight and not a twinge of inapropriate panic. Two years ago I couldn't even contemplate walking to the end of my driveway. I just can't recommend this book highly enough. It was the light at the end of my tunnel.

Editorial Review:

This step-by-step guide to recovery from anxiety and panic disorder--the number-one mental health problem in America--offers state-of-the-art treatment methods that have helped thousands, plus simple, straightforward, and reassuring techniques that help guard against relapse.

Easy to understand 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book on an impulse. I have family with ADD and manic depression. I read through the book in 2 days, because it was so easy to read and understand. The author does a lot of explaining that makes sense to me and it fits my family members who suffer from depression. This book turned a light on in my brain as to the "why, who and how comes" of depression. I am buying more of these to give as gifts. I recommend this to those who have loved ones who suffer and for those who suffer the pain of depression. It's not a cure, it's a door being opened.

Editorial Review:

Seventeen million people in the United States suffer from clinical depression, and more than fifty million people find themselves in prolonged emotional lows. Now, for every sufferer, there is hope. Not only are effective counseling methods available to treat depression, but also researchers have made great strides in understanding the chemical makeup of the brain. Mood Swings helps readers understand the causes of bipolar-related disorders--and find effective ways to treat the problem, recover the joy they've lost, and return to a far more normal, balanced perspective on life. The doctors discuss the extremes and the in-betweens of depression, and show how the highs and lows of uncontrollable mood swings trap the sufferer in a cycle of dysfunction.Mood Swings offers hope to everyone who suffers depression and helps those who love them understand and treat this troubling problem.

Excellent book for breaking strongholds of fear and anxiety 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I read this book and will continue to use it as a reference book as I grow in my christianity. This book is clear, concise, very easy to follow and is steeped in scripture and helpful prayers. This book covers all areas of fear and anxiety, including Fear of Death, Fear of Failure, Fear of Man, Panic Disorder, Anxious Thinking and worrying among others. This book points the believer toward Christ through prayer, building up of ones faith, and biblical scripture in an effort to break the stongholds of fear and/or anxiety over his/her life by building a stronghold of faith in Christ.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with strongholds of anxiety and/or fear.

Knowing his heart for healing in the body 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 25 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I were blessed immeasurably by Victory Over the Darkness, The Bondage Breaker, the youth versions of each, the Steps of Freedom in Christ, and training videos by Freedom in Christ Ministry to help us lead others to WALKING in their freedom in CHRIST.

Neil, his wife and a number of his staff were in my home following a conference sharing how God has blessed them by helping believers realize what they have in Christ. They spent countless amounts of time guiding our church to establish an in/out reach to hurting believers. His books tend to overlap in theme, and repeat Scripture, intentionally. Most flailing believers aren't unaware of Scripture, most haven't processed and accepted the fullness of what Christ has done for them.

Neil's heart isn't to sell books, but to continually share with God's people what Christ has completed for them, so they can simply accept and live in His freedom.

Neil took the challenge to address the difficult issues when a good portion of conservative christendom calously folded their arms and hurled cliches.

Editorial Review:

Examining the root causes of fear, readers will learn how strongholds develop and find the tools to tear down the prison walls. Includes a 21–day devotional guide.

Therapist , Student of Author, Strongly Recommends Book 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I myself am a tutor who works with elementary and middle school students. I currently have a student who has acute anxiety attacks that interfere with her attendance, since her anxiety triggers uncontrollable IBS for her.

I checked with therapists locally for resources to help the 8th grade student and received a strong positive from a therapist who had studied under Dr. Liebgold. Dr. Liebgold actually had acute anxiety for many, many years. He managed to control it and/or keep it hidden. Now, he is sharing personally proven techniques that will help others impacted by anxiety.

The therapist said that the student herself could read it and benfit from it; she also said that the book would be very helpful to parents.

This book changed my life. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a very great self help book. It is easy to use and teaches in a clear down to earth way. I have read many other books on this subject and this book gives you the tools to truly overcome these issues. It worked for me and I am positive it can work for others who may or may not be using prescription drugs.

Editorial Review:

Americans seek therapy in record numbers and consume more medications than ever before, yet stress, anxiety, and depression continue to rise to epidemic proportions. People can spend years on the psychoanalytic couch without making any progress. And for many psychiatrists, the prescription-writing reflex has become almost automatic, despite the fact that benefits often disappear as soon as drug treatment stops. Standard treatments simply aren't long-term solutions.

But psychiatrist/neurologist David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., knows that we can cure our emotional pain. He's seen certain natural methods produce tremendous results in his clinical practice, in that of his peers, and even in war-torn regions where horrific memories can leave deep scars.

Numerous studies in prestigious scientific journals have documented the amazing benefits of these methods on anxiety and depression, but because the mechanisms through which they operate remain poorly understood, they've remained largely excluded from mainstream medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Servan-Schreiber explains how each of the natural methods in this ensemble treatment plan can help us escape the therapy/drug trap by working through the body to tap into the emotional brain's self-healing processes rather than relying on the cognitive process of language.

Weaving fascinating accounts of his firsthand experience and findings together with the research of hundreds of other esteemed scientists, Dr. Servan-Schreiber outlines a program that's becoming embraced throughout the world as a permanent cure for emotional pain. See how you, too, can tap into The Instinct to Heal.

Magnesium relieved my anxiety, please read this review 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

Compassionately Destigmatizes Medication 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I wish every Christian would read this book. I have encountered so many well-meaning, misinformed Christians who dismiss mood disorders, particularly depression, as soley a spiritual problem for people who simply don't have enough faith to overcome it. It is equally disheartening to hear Christians ignorantly tout that schizophrenics--or others who suffer from psychotic breaks--are demon-possessed. Real people living with certain neurochemical imbalances have been spiritually abused and traumatized by over-zealous, super-spirtual Christians attempting to "cast out their demons in the name of Jesus." I would specifically encourage ministers and lay counselors who are in the business of understanding the human condition and offering help to broken hearts to become students of the delicate interplay of spirituality, neurochemistry, and environment.

Paul Meier compassionately and expertly discusses the biochemical workings of the brain that contribute to such experiences and offers practical hope for people living with neurochemical imbalances. He interweaves Scripture throughout the book and explains how spiritual problems such as bitterness and unforgiveness, can, in fact, drain the brain of neurochemicals, such as serotonin. Other times, genetics can predispose people to chemical imbalances. I laughed when Dr. Meier mentioned that of all the "demon-possessed" patients he's treated, 99% of them have responded favorably to medication. He reasons, that unless demons are allergic to medications, the behavioral disturbances must be organic in nature.

Another favorite story of mine in the book is that of a woman who presented in his clinic with depression and anxiety. After days of therapy, her therapists were stumped. They had been unsuccessful in uncovering the root of her symptoms. So Paul Meier prayed that God would show them, and that night, in a dream, Jesus came to Paul and told him that this lady had had an abortion seven years earlier. He casually mentioned it to her the next day, and she dismissed the abortion as no big deal. In her mind, there was no way that could possbily impacting her now. Well, he asked her to go ahead and journal about the experience, and bingo, she was able to make the connection, grieve over that sin, and experience some healing and relief from her symptoms.

So I found the book to be both spiritually and practically balanced, compassionate, destigmatizing, and hope-filled. I love how he compares neurochemical imbalances to being no different than hypertension or diabetes. People don't usually blink at having to take meds for those phsysiological disorders; why is Prozac any different?

He also included a chapter on nutritional and vitamin supplements that can often improve symptoms w/o the use of medication. And for those who may be averse to the idea of taking medication and who may want to try natural remedies first, I recommend the book, The Brain Chemistry Diet, written by psychiatrist Michael Lesser.

Editorial Review:

Many common psychological problems, such as depression, bipolar disorder, obsessivecompulsive disorder, and ADHD, can be linked to chemical imbalances in the brain. Dr. Paul Meier, whose clinic treats thousands of people per week, has written Blue Genes to help find answers for those who struggle. Through fascinating case studies, Dr. Meier shows the dramatic difference counseling and medicine can make. This empowering book addresses how genetics, environment, diet, fitness, and spirituality all affect our minds and our quality of life.
