You are not alone 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If your wondering about buying this book I recommend you do. Don't stress you can always hide it and you never know it may just help. As a sufferer it took a lot of courage to buy this book. When I read it I cryed and I now know I am not alone. It has even empowered me to seek professional help and talk about this demon to close family and friends. I know I can beat this and this book has helped me on my pathway to recovery

An important reference book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book helped me substantially get over this secret condition. However it is not a substitute for getting to support groups and active work.
It is however the defining and original book on this topic, by educated authors who have been affected by the condition themselves.
My only criticism is that it is not totally comprehensive in the treatment side of it, if you are trying to recover on your own.

Editorial Review:

Shy Bladder Syndrome takes a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach, shown to help in most cases, to an embarrassing and often life-disrupting disorder. Simple strategies and exercises help sufferers overcome their fear of using public restrooms. Supporting materials discuss the therapeutic effects of disclosing the condition.

A Must Read, No Exaggeration 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Angry All the Time

By Ron Potter-Efron, M.S.W., Ph.D.

A Must Read, No Exaggeration

Ron Potter-Efron is the most honest Ph.D. I have ever met. If professors in colleges and universities were as open as he, our institutions of higher learning may possibly be producing better citizens and not just knowledge-filled people.

Every man and every woman needs to read this book, especially if you are married or planning to get married. Every person who has to work for a living should read this book. In fact, every person, who needs to deal with others on a daily basis, should read this book. Every parent needs to read this book.

Those, like myself, who are sensitive and prone to anger need this book more than any one else. People like me, who have little clue as to how to deal with frustrations and conflicts and who misuse and abuse this powerful emotion called Anger, with a capital A, need to have a copy of this book on their kitchen table.

According to the author, anger is a signal not a path. Folks like myself express anger negatively physically and verbally. After reading chapters six and seven, I have no more excuses regarding what to do with anger. The author claims that someone taught me how I became this way. He offers explanations, not excuses.

Eleven rules to learn and live by for anyone who has trouble with handling anger can be found on page 76 of this book. The first six deal with the physical expressions of anger; the next five deal with the verbal expressions of anger. I am listing them here and the author explains how to carry them out. If anger has ruined your life too many times, I implore you to get this book. In fact, they should put this book in every hotel and motel.

Rules to deal with your anger.

1) Take a time-out to stop the violence.
2) Wipe that frown off your face and relax.
3) Quit trying to control others.
4) Accept differences.
5) Ask, don't demand.
6) Reward, don't punish or threaten.
7) Speak quietly and don't swear.
8) You are responsible for what you say and do.
9) Treat others with respect.
10) Tell others what bothers you. Be direct, specific and polite.
11) Use "I" statements.

You might have to slow down to read this book; that's alright. The rest of your trip may become more enjoyable. It is a shame my father and mother did not have this book. Need I say more.

Editorial Review:

Very angry people live in a trap. They use their mouths like fists. They lose control. Things are said, damage is done that later creates deep regret. Friends, lovers, jobs are lost. And it just keeps happening, regardless of the regret, the damage, the things lost.

Angry All the Time has real help and real answers.

An angry person can make immediate changes by learning to: · Identify the causes of anger
· Stop making excuses and stop blaming
· Follow the 8 steps of anger management
· Stay calm for 24 hours, and then for another 24 hours
· Avoid violence and threats
· Change anger provoking thoughts
· Deal with old resentments
· Ask for what you want without anger

This book can change the life of the angry person, and the lives of those around him or her. Also recommended for therapists who want to offer practical help to angry clients.

Self-help manual that really helps! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The must-have book for healers and therapists. Forget Brief Therapy...this one gets results using cutting-edge concepts that escape many practitioners stuck in the Old Paradigm medical model. Roger Callahan's TFT approach offers genuine relief of symptoms and old issues which cause distress in a simple, but NOT simplistic manner. It is a miracle, and this book is a user-friendly manual that anyone can use effectively. As a former marriage counselor and family therapist, I appreciate jargon-free solutions that really help! Anyone with any kind of pain can benefit from using the methods offered here. A self-help book that really helps!

Concept okay, but plodding book 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Whether this works as the author claims, or whether it's one of those "we don't know why it works, it just does" (imho the more likely explanation) sort of things, it doesn't hurt to try the program, and you are only out the price of the book.

That said, this book is very repetitive (it is about 50 pages too long) and plodding. It should have come with a CD of the instructions for each tapping sequence, which would make it much easier to use.

Editorial Review:

In Tapping the Healer Within, Dr. Roger Callahan shows you how to harness the healing power of Thought Field Therapy on your own, to overcome phobias, anxieties, addictions, and other common psychological problems.

Suggestions for a rewrite 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This is an addendum to my review of two years ago.

First off, I mentioned that the book is written on a grade-school level. Why not produce another edition, with the title "The Depression Workbook for Smart People" or "The Depression Workbook for the College-Educated"? This may help some of us to feel less put off and alienated.

Additionally, the book is also written from a highly feminine point of view. The profession expresses concern that more men are not coming forward and seeking help for depression, but I believe many men are not comfortable with many of the suggestions put forward in this book (and many others). Men are not inclined to take up painting, or knitting, or flower arranging. We like skeet shooting, NASCAR, and cage fighting. In other words, expecting men to become more like women in order to get well is unreaslistic. Another suggested edition: "The Depression Workbook for Men."

Editorial Review:

This bestselling workbook provides interactive exercises that help readers take responsibility for their own wellness and teach essential coping skills, such as tracking and controlling moods, building a support system, increasing self-confidence and self-esteem, avoiding conditions that can exacerbate mood swings, and using relaxation, diet, and exercise to stabilize moods.A major feature of the second edition is a new chapter that details a step-by-step process to help readers develop their own plan for managing symptoms and staying well. The second edition also contains an updated list of resources, including an extensive list of helpful web resources, as well as expanded material on specific treatment strategies and updated resources for mental health professionals.

Helps learn about yourself and others 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I never look to books to give me the ultimate answer. If I learn something from it and can apply it in some way to my life, and if it's writen well enough to keep me interested, it's worth it. This book was very good that way, at least for someone who likes philosopical/psychological stuff.

I've been diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder, and had a bout of depression last year. A very good therapist recommended this to me. In fact, she said that I HAD TO buy it. I did, and learned a lot about various types and triggers for anxiety. The more I learn about it, the easier for me to deal with it. It became a familiar, known side of me, and when I can separate the rest of me from it and look at it, and study it, it becomes less and less relevant. Which is what we all want, right?

And, it helped me understand other types of psychological issues. I don't suffer from all of those, thankfully, but it is sure interesting to learn how those work. Anyway, it's a good read. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Much of anxiety therapy is designed as quick, focused intervention, treating a specific syndrome without looking at the possibility of long- term healing. However, true recovery requires something more: understanding the meaning of anxiety symptoms and going deeper to face their underlying sources in a holistic and life-changing way. Beyond Anxiety and Phobia provides an array of alternative strategies for entering this long-term healing mode; describes alternative therapies such as herbs, yoga, massage, acupuncture, and homeopathy; and addresses the impact of perfectionism and other personality issues.

Editorial Review:

Unhappiness, says bestselling author Harriet Lerner, is fueled by three key emotions: anxiety, fear, and shame. They are the uninvited guests in our lives. When tragedy or hardship hits, they may become our constant companions.

Anxiety can wash over us like a tidal wave or operate as a silent thrum under the surface of our daily lives. With stories that are sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking, Lerner takes us from "fear lite" to the most difficult lessons the universe sends us. We learn:

  • how a man was "cured in a day" of the fear of rejection -- and what we can learn from his story

  • how the author overcame her dread of public speaking when her worst fears were realized

  • how to deal with the fear of not being good enough, and with the shame of feeling essentially flawed and inadequate

  • how to stay calm and clear in an anxious, crazy workplace

  • how to manage fear and despair when life sends a crash course in illness, vulnerability, and loss

  • how "positive thinking" helps -- and harms

  • how to be our best and bravest selves, even when we are terrified and have internalized the shaming messages of others

No one signs up for anxiety, fear, and shame, but we can’t avoid them either. As we learn to respond to these three key emotions in new ways, we can live more fully in the present and move into the future with courage, clarity, humor, and hope. Fear and Other Uninvited Guests shows us how.

I love the dummies series. Despite thier name they are typically a well written, well researched and balanced resource. The authors of this one included a comprehensive look at anxiety with a wide variety of interventions to suit many people. Helpful without being dry or preachy, it's great for clinician and self-helper alike. A must-have for your bookshelf if you work with people with anxiety or have anxiety yourself.
