Editorial Review:

A decade ago, Deepak Chopra, M.D., wrote Perfect Health, the first practical guide to harnessing the healing power of the mind, which became a national bestseller. The book described how breakthroughs in physics and medicine were underscoring the validity of a 5,000-year-old medical system from ancient India known as Ayurveda ("the knowledge of life span" in Sanskrit). Perfect Health went on to describe how to apply the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda to everyday life. In celebration of this classic work we have created this new edition, revised and updated to include the latest medical research.

Although we experience our bodies as solid, they are in fact more like fires that are constantly being consumed and renewed. We grow new stomach linings every five days, for instance. Our skin is new every five weeks. Each year, fully 98 percent of the total number of atoms in our bodies is replaced. Ayurveda gives us the tools to intervene at this quantum level, where we are being created anew each day. Ayurveda tells us that freedom from sickness depends on contacting our own awareness, bringing it into balance, and then extending that balance to the body.

Perfect Health provides a complete step-by-step program of mind body medicine tailored to individual needs. A quiz identifies the reader's mind body type: thin, restless Vata; enterprising, efficient Pitta; tranquil, steady Kapha; or any combination of these three. This body type becomes the basis for a specific Ayurvedic program of diet, stress reduction, neuromuscular integration, exercise, and daily routines. The result is a total plan, tailor-made for each individual, to reestablish the body's essential balance with nature; to strengthen the mind body connection; and to use the power of quantum healing to transcend the ordinary limitations of disease and aging--in short, for achieving Perfect Health.

Good Tastes, Love and Wisdom 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990. Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love.

The deeper side of cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!

Because of various health problems I was always advised to try different diets but never liked what I cooked. It was always the most boring task. This book has changed my attitude in the most profound ways, where I begin to perceive food not only as a source of nourishment but also a way to understand my own body's energetical needs and how to heal it. It is the most interesting fact to learn the connection between the food and my emotions. Through these quick, simple and most delicious recipes I am learning how to create foods which calm me when I need calming, ground me when I need grounding and cool or warm me depending on the season and the balance in my energy pattern. But it's not only that, I can even effect a positive emotional and digestive change in my husband through dishes that are meant for his type!

This book is slowly turning me from "cook hater" into "cook lover" and I cannot wait to try all of those recipes. The pumpkin or sweet potato halva recipe had us on our knees. It is sublime. The Indian tastes are simply like swimming in a deep ocean while the American cooking is more like swimming in a small and shallow pond. Why not jump in on the deeper side of life?

Editorial Review:

The Ayurvedic Cookbook gives a fresh new perspective on this ancient art of self-healing. Over 250 taste-tested recipes are specifically designed to balance each constitution, with an emphasis on simplicity, ease and sound nutrition.

I liked this book very much and will keep it as part of my Ayuervedic library. It has very detailed and useful medical information. I was a little disappointed with the lack of spiritual information and spiritual tie-in to our physical parts. But over all a very good reference book.

Editorial Review:

This is the first book on marma therapy published in the West. It clearly describes the 107 main marma points in location, properties and usage. It explains in detail how to treat them with many methods including massage, aromas, herbs and yoga practices. Ayurveda and Marma Therapy is an essential reference guide for all students of Yoga, Ayurveda, massage or natural healing.

One of the most rewarding and useful books I have ever read 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

One of the most rewarding and useful books I have ever read

I first read "Prakriti: Your Ayurvedic Constitution" by Robert Svoboda eight years ago, and it was in fact the first book on the subject that I had ever read. It is an engagingly written, perfectly organized introduction to a discipline that I call "data dense." That is to say, ayurveda is an extraordinarily complex study of the forces and forms, events and processes, that govern the structure and functioning of the human body in health and disease. Because of Dr. Svoboda's clear and logical elucidation of that study, it is made understandable to the reader willing to invest the time and thought in surveying its breadth and plumbing its depth.

Dr. Robert Svoboda is an American author and an ayurvedic physician who is one of the luminaries of the field: a teacher, writer and practitioner who alone has done more to raise public awareness of the ancient healing art than any other Westerner and one of the dozen leading ayurvedic educators in the world today. He is the author of a dozen books on the subject and countless professional and popular articles. Svoboda graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1972 and in 1973 moved to India to study at the prestigious Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya (an ayuvedic medical college) in Pune. In 1980, he graduated from the University of Pune with the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) and was awarded the distinction of "Ayurvedacharya." Svoboda is the first Westerner to graduate from a college of ayurvedic medicine and to be licensed to practice ayurveda in India.

For the individual new to ayurveda, this book is the best introduction available. The author communicates his deep knowledge of ayurvedic science extremely effectively, probing beneath the superficialities and illustrating clearly the reasons that it makes sense scientifically and philosophically.

Dr. Svoboda's work on the role of the "prakriti," the constitutional psychobiological types postulated by ayurveda's theory comes after much research and clinical experience. Prakriti, the individual `s constitution, is the basis of ayurvedic medicine; ayurvedic theory asserts that if an individual (or his physician) comprehends the nature of their own constitution, they can extrapolate with precision what comprises a good diet and lifestyle specifically for them. This emphasis on the unique needs of each individual in maintaining or restoring a state of health is the "crown jewel" of ayurveda and is what makes it distinctive from all other healing arts.

In addition to explaining the theory underlying "prakriti," this valuable work illustrates how best to bring each constitutional type into healthy balance, addressing some of the most commonly encountered health challenges such as obesity and malnutrition, asthma, allergies, rheumatic diseases, tuberculosis and cancer.

Dr. Svoboda does not stop at the fundamentals: he generously gives his readers a small taste of some of the more rarified realms of ayurvedic practice in the concluding chapters of the book on Indian alchemy (rasa shastra) and on the metaphysics that lie behind and beyond the workings of this ancient science. That taste of what ayurveda has to offer leaves the reader hungry for more (and of course, there is very much more).

I unhesitatingly recommend "Prakriti: Your Ayurvedic Constitution" for anyone curious as to what ayurveda is all about: the person considering consulting an ayurvedic practitioner, the Western-trained health professional interested in or wishing to augment his or her effectiveness using ayurveda's principles, the student of yoga curious about yoga's "sister science," or anyone inquiring into ancient India's vast contribution to world science.

Dr. Svoboda has done wonderful work in writing this book, and deserves much gratitude for his effort. This is one of the most rewarding books I have ever read, and one that inspired me to continue my study of ayurveda.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Svoboda's original work on the constitutional types in Ayurveda has beenconsidered a classic for many years. His new revision and expansion of thesubject comes after much further research and practical experience. Dr. VasantLad points out: "The healing science of Ayurveda is based totally upon theknowledge of "prakriti", the individual constitution. If every individual knows his own constitution, then one can understand, for instance, what is a good diet and style of life for oneself. One man's food is another man's poison. Therefore, to make one's life healthy, happy and balanced, the knowledge ofconstitution is absolutely necessary." (Dr. Vasant Lad is the author ofAyurveda: The Science of Self-Healing, and co-author of The Yoga of Herbs.)

Ray finally read a book, now he's reviewing it. Hmmm 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It's an easy read.
My wife is really fat, and likes Chopra. I got it for her. It only cost 8 cents + shipping.
I ended up reading it for her, she is a bit lazy.
The approach to Perfect Weight is a common sense no brainer. We can't all be expected to look like fashion models or weight lifters.
Getting our weight, habits, and lives in a natural balance is of the utmost importance. I already knew that. The 126 pages only took a few days to read, then I went back to certain parts to better understand the concepts.

Here is the rub, To a great book, or a great plan. One must really, be motivated to do it. And start doing it, a little piece at a time.

Chopra is philosophical, somewhat spiritual, and logical. He is quick to point out myths, and thinking superstitions. A very pleasant person.

I'd give this approach serious consideration if I were concerned with weight, etc. etc. etc. It may be important to give the concepts enumerated on from the point of view of listening and learning a new thing and not refuting the methodology, or belief system, at every turn of the page.

There is a part at the end which illustrate some yoga exercises, which can help exercise the innards as well as trim and build mussels, which is part of the wholeistic, approach Chopra mentions.
The idea of cause and effect are obvious but need to be pointed out, this is done well, in areas concerning, eating, and just what are we eating, when and why.

The book has an uplifting feel, and hopefully we can re-boot detox and be come aware of what our eating habits and reasonings are.

It works for me, now her turn. :-)

Editorial Review:

One of the two launch titles in the Perfect Health Library series by bestselling author Dr. Deepak Chopra, Perfect Weight focuses on Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of life, to help readers conquer their weight problems.

informative, interesting and not too new agey 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 19 people found this review helpful.

i've got this book after a recomendation of my yoga instractor and just like she said - it helps put the yoga i take at the gym, which is mainly asanas (postures) in a larger context of both spiritual guidness and preseption as well as other live guiding filds, like breathing, eating, and over all living.

though it deals with a lot of topics who were new to me, and a lot of sanskrit turms, the book's very well arange and repeat to explain certion parts more then once so that i was sure to understand, it's very methodic and though it doesn't creat or recoment a spasific practice to live, like some, mostly more shallow book does, it give you certion guidlines and directions to find yourself withing the path of yoga and ayurveda.

the book approach the 3 dosha (type) help you realize what type you belong to (air, fire or water) and what are the best approachs for you concerning breathing, eating, asana practice, meditation and other filds of life. on top of that it gives a very whole phylosofical approach that i liked.

frewley is a very good teacher, he phrases things very clearly and arranged a lot of half known turms while filling a lot of the gaps for me, i enjoyed this book a lot and it had direct influence on my yoga practic.

Editorial Review:

Yoga and Ayurveda together form a complete approach for optimal health, vitality and higher awareness. YOGA AND AYURVEDA reveals to us the secret powers of thebody, breath, senses, mind and chakras. More importantly, it unfoldstransformational methods to work on them through diet, herbs, asana, pranayamaand meditation. This is the first book published in the West on these twoextraordinary subjects and their interface. It has the power to change thelives of those who read and apply it.
