Why Drugs are Not the Answer to Heart Disease 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 40 people found this review helpful.

What a wonderful idea Dr. Braverman promises - "REVERSE HEART DISEASE, Naturally" with his "30- to 90-Day No-More hypertension and Heart Disease Program" in 198 pages. Who is Eric Braverman? As founder and Director of PATH Medical (the Place for achieving Total Health) in New York City he's "considered one of America's most innovative physicians" according to his publisher Basic Health.

Updating his 1996 research by adding daughter Dasha Braverman's RAINBOW DIET (choosing the right fresh colorful fruits and vegetables) the results to be expected are a "Drug-free, robust life" in one year.

So you ask - How can you do it? Well, Braverman says you can:

Lower blood pressure to 120/80 - 135/85.
Triglycerides and cholesterol to below 200 and increase HDL to above 50.
Discontinue all beta-and alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors.

Just replace with his Special Formula's number 1 to 14.

Then, Reduce Stress with Cranial Electric Stimulation (CES) by sending gentle electrical signals to the vagus nerve in your brain with his RELAX-MATE, a TENS - a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation unit, for 15-60 minutes a day to release GABA and acetylcholine in your brain because it's biofeedback like training for self control and peace of mind.

All that can help you to "break addictive food habits and destructive behaviors". Dr. Braverman defines depression "as anger turned inward" and suggests emotions "contribute to blockages in the large vessels supplying blood to the brain." New science that`s easy to follow and easy to use.

With this book anyone ought to be able to "Reverse Heart Disease -Naturally!"

Editorial Review:

It's hard to believe you're dying when you feel fit and fine...but millions of Americans are harboring unaware a condition that can rob them or kill them outright--hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, the most common form of heart disease. Even when hypertension is diagnosed, treatment is usually based on drugs, most with dismal side effects, expensive, and of limited usefulness.

Really effective treatment of hypertension calls for getting at the cause--which, Dr. Eric Braverman has found, often relates to poor diet, elevated cholesterol, excess weight, stress, and biochemical imbalances. With Dr. Braverman's 30- to 90-day program, patients have lowered their blood pressure and, in some case, even reversed the course of existing heart disease.

Based on extensive research and long clinical experience, Dr. Braverman's program can open the way to the longer and better-enjoyed life that high blood pressure and heart disease are silently waiting to steal from us.

Excellent book 4 out of 5 stars.

Having read articles and hearing about the benefits of vinegar, I was anxious to read this book. Not only does Cal Orey present the benefits and healing power of vinegar, she combines it with the history and definition of vinegar. Her collection of stories and different kinds of vinegars, along with the many treatments, like the prevention of food poisoning, as well as how to make your own flavored vinegar and delicious recipes. Cal treats us to the surprising benefits of a staple almost everyone has on their shelf.
I've heard of wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar and cider vinegar but I never knew about rice vinegar, herbal vinegars or fruit flavored vinegars among others she mentions. I discovered how different vinegars prevent cancer, prevent bone loss, help with weight loss and even help you live longer. This is one book I'm keeping on the shelf next to my cookbooks.

Editorial Review:

Part II describes more than one hundred fifty common disorders, conveniently arranged in alphabetical order from acne to yeast infection, and names the herbal therapies that can be used in the treatment of those conditions. Part III is a guide to using various kinds of herbal and other alternative therapies. In addition, it includes self-diagnostic tests and boxed insets throughout, which offer detailed information on a wide variety of topics.

A lifesaver.... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not well schooled in herbs or home remedies, but this book was a tremendous help to me during my last two pregnancies. There are not just herbal concoctions, but simple, common-sense solutions for everything from pain to depression to lactation issues. When I was struggling with what might have been a premature birth, I consulted this book and was able to halt my contractions, and afterwards continued a healthy, full-term pregnancy. The knowledge you'll find in these pages is priceless.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I work in a health food store and pregnant women, and women with small children ask me all the time about herbal advice for them- something impossible to find.(Usually at the advice of their doctor) I always remind them that I'm not a doctor and anything they do is at their own risk. That said, what I am is someone who researches herbs and vitamins constantly, and obsessively reads about the side effects and interactions of natural medicine. Because of this book's warnings about herbs, I have informed hundreds of pregnant women about herbs they should be careful with- saffron, parsley, etc. Susun Weed will recommend mild herbs scientifically known for their gentle effectiveness. Also, her advice tends to actually work and have the advantage of thousands of years of experience concerning side effects under its' belt.(And real science- real research done by doctors/scientists- search the herbs recommended in studies done by "The Lancet" for example) Do you want to take ginger tea for your nausea or a prescription?? Well, they're both potentially dangerous-not just the herb. And that's a fact-yeah, herbs can kill you-everyone knows this-and so can drugs-so people should educate themselves about the side effects of EVERYTHING they put into their bodies. When a doctor says a drug is "safe", they don't mean harmless, they mean that the good outweighs the bad or the drug is "relatively safe'. Eating licorice everyday is dangerous...saffron could kill you...

Editorial Review:

Despite Centers for Disease Control estimates that only 20,000 new Lyme disease infections occur each year, the true figure, as Harvard medical school researchers have found, nearly approaches 200,000. Symptoms run from mild lethargy to severe arthritis to incapacitating mental dysfunction. And despite medical pronouncements to the contrary, extensive research has found that tests for the disease are not very reliable and antibiotics are only partially effective; up to 35 percent of those infected will not respond to treatment or will relapse. The spirochetes that cause Lyme are stealth pathogens—they can hide within cells or alter their form so that antibiotics cannot affect them. Lyme disease is, in fact, a potent, emerging epidemic disease for which technological medicine is only partially effective.
Healing Lyme examines the leading, scientific research on Lyme infection, its tests and treatments, and outlines the most potent herbal medicines and supplements that offer help—either alone or in combination with antibiotics—for preventing and healing the disease. It is the essential guide to Lyme infection and its treatment.

"Natural' isn't always better... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I just finished reading Susan Miller Cavitch's The Natural Soap Book and found it lacking in several respects.

There is a pervasive preachy tone to this book that annoyed me horribly. Ms. Cavitch uses the book as a soap box (pardon the unintended pun) to promote several personal points of view, two central ones being her diatribes against the use of animal products and anything synthetic. My grandfather made soap the old-fashioned way, using the hot process method. He made his soap by boiling lye with animal fat he had rendered himself, much of it supplied by his children (including my mother). My mother always kept a coffee can in the refrigerator, and whenever she cooked any fatty meat, the grease when in the can. When it was full, it when to her father to be turned into soap. This grease probably wasn't much good for anything else, and was certainly full of unhealthy saturated fats; had it not gone into soap, it would have gone into the garbage. The vegetable oils Ms. Cavitch advocates using are mostly edible, and in many poor countries, vegetable oils are a significant source of calories. Increasingly, non-food uses of vegetable oils, most significantly an ever increasing demand for bio-diesel, have driven the price of these oils up to the point that many poorer populations around the world are being pushed dangerously close to starvation. The increased demand for these oils has also led to whole-sale destruction of virgin tropical forest, as huge plantations of oil palms are planted. So, our luxury all-vegetable soaps are made from oils that in many nations would be considered too valuable as food to be used for such a frivolous purpose as bathing, and further, the production of these soaps, although insignificant compared to the production of bio-fuels, can still not be completely divorced from the destruction of natural forest and the concurrent loss of bio-diversity inherent in the increased production of vegetable oil. So, which is better? To plow under rain forest to plant oil palms for soap, when the workers who labor on these plantations can't even afford the oil they produce for food, or to use animal fats that would otherwise go to waste? Personally, I prefer vegetable oil soaps, but I am also aware of the consequences of this preference and do not pretend that this puts me on a higher moral ground than people who bathe with tallow products. And although I also prefer `natural' products, many of these products are luxury items that are beyond the budget of most of the world's population. People who can't afford food are unlikely to spend $6.00 on a four ounce bar of pure castile soap. Synthetics, although by no means perfect and by no means lacking in potential harmful side effects, have made improved hygiene affordable to huge segments of the human population that would otherwise face much higher mortality rates due to a lack of basic cleanliness. These products have brought inestimable benefit to mankind, and although not without their faults, I would have liked to see a far more balanced discussion of them.

My final comments on Ms. Cavitch's book are technical. She doesn't discuss the use of the stick blender in home-made soap production. Many of the problems addressed in her chapter on trouble shooting can be avoided by the use of these wonderful gadgets; in fact, the 16 hour trace times she mentions for some soaps can be reduced to less than half an hour using one. Her section on trouble shooting also advises the soap maker to discard most failed batches; there is no discussion of rebatching, a technique that can be used to salvage all but the worst soap-making failures. The rescued soap might not be salable, but isn't it better to give away seconds than to throw your time and materials away?

I would advise a novice soap-maker to skip this book and buy Anne L. Watson's Smart Soapmaking instead. It is short, concise, practical, and a pleasure to read. It avoids many of the shortcomings that mar Ms. Cavitch's book.

Editorial Review:

An inspiring exploration of the goodness of chemical- and additive-free soap. 102,000 copies in print.

I am really glad there are people out like Dr. James Duke because I am an herbalist and I enjoy this book immensely.

The Green Pharmacy 5 out of 5 stars.

For those who wish to explore beyond the medical orthodoxy for treatments of everyday ailments this book is a must read. However, always discuss any alternative treatments with your medical practitioner if taking natural remedies in conjunction with orthodox medications.

Editorial Review:

There's still a lot to learn about the healing power of plants, James Duke points out, but what we do know is already prodigious. Much of that knowledge is gathered in The Green Pharmacy, an A-to-Z guide to that relies on plant-based medicines to cure what ails us. Between the listings, Duke crams personal anecdotes from a lifetime of studying herbs, berries, and bark. For example, he relates how he worried about telling a pregnant niece that ginger could help alleviate her morning sickness because he'd learned from a pharmacologist that ginger could also induce miscarriage. Then he solved the mystery: he'd recommended ginger tea, which contains about 250 milligrams of ginger. The Chinese, he learned, use about 80 times that much to end pregnancies--another testimony to the amazing versatility of these natural medicines.
