This is the first volume of the two volume herbal set.If you like classical literature and recipes, you will enjoy reading this book. Also has information on tonics and liniments for various aliments. Methods of harvesting and chemical dosages are discussed. And preparation of the extracts and tinctures are detailed. Some illustrations, from the root to the bud,are drawn clearly.Folk tales and cosmetic aspects are included. It's a bit old-fashioned ,yet it reads like an enchanting medieval Herbal Arthurian text. If you're a serious student of herbalism and classical studies, then you'll find this botanical set engrossing reading.

Editorial Review:

Volume 1 of the fullest, most exact, most useful compilation of herbal material. Gigantic alphabetical encyclopedia, from aconite to zedoary, gives botanical information, medical properties, folklore, economic uses, much else. Indispensable to serious reader. Total in set: 161 illustrations.

Thorough book on home beauty 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Not only does this book offer recipes and tips on inexpensive, chemical-free beauty care, but the author also offers advice on purchasing, storing and choosing the proper products. It's a great resource if you want to save money but still look great and without putting toxins in your body.

I also want to note that it is unfortunate that any idiot can post a review on Amazon. Hiding behind a screen name allows people with WAY too much time on their hands to hurt respectable authors that are trying to help people by sharing their knowledge. I am referring to the review by "paradoxes" (ohio) who has a morbid fear of alcohol. Yes it is drying, but those with normal or oily skin should have no problem using it. In fact, it's in almost every commercial beauty product there is. As for her contention about putting "spoiling FOOD" on your skin. What the heck is she talking about? Everyone has heard about cucumbers for tired eyes, mayo for dry hair. And I don't recall any passage in the book that advised using a rotten banana in a facial. My guess is that she doesn't believe in natural beauty care and probably shouldn't have bought the book in the first place. IF she did, that is.

Just keep in mind that not all reviewers are honest and some are plain crazy. If you don't believe me, click on her screen name and check out the 'about me' section.

The definitive guide to adaptogenic herbs, formerly known as “tonics,” that counter the effects of age and stress on the body

• Reveals how adaptogens increase the body’s resistance to adverse influences

• Provides a history of the use of these herbal remedies and the actions, properties, preparation, and dosage for each herb

We all deal with stress every day, and every day our bodies strive to adapt and stay balanced and healthy. In Adaptogens, authors David Winston and Steven Maimes provide a comprehensive look into adaptogens, non-toxic herbs such as ginseng, eleuthero, and licorice, that produce a defensive response to stress in our bodies. Formerly known as rejuvenating herbs or tonics, adaptogens help the body to “adapt” to the many influences it encounters. They increase stamina and counter the normal effects of aging and thus are becoming important tools in sports medicine and in the prevention and treatment of chronic fatigue and other stress-related disorders.

Winston and Maimes present the historical uses of these herbal remedies in India, Russia, China, and the Americas and explain how they work and why they are so effective at combating stress-induced illness. Monographs for each adaptogen also present the latest scientific research and include the origin, traditional use, actions, properties, preparation, and dosage for each herb.

Amazing things your doc wouldn't think to tell you! 5 out of 5 stars.
131 of 134 people found this review helpful.

This book is easy to read, packed with info, and has wonderful recipes. I especially like the alternative remedies included using these three everyday items. I never knew, for example, that apple cider vinegar was great on burns until I used it on myself. No scar, no pain, no blistering! A good book to have on your kitchen shelf.

Oil, Vinegar and Garlic 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is tremendous as it give the wholesome greatness of these three ingredients all that have been available for centuries. I used several of the recipes included in this book for our social hour at our church. They all enjoyed sampling foods that were available during Bible times. There are many healthful suggestions given in all three ingredients and great book.

Lots of good info! 3 out of 5 stars.

Looking for an alternative to our pill popping culture ? 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

So you're looking for an alternative to pill popping ? Now that's a change! I'm in awe of people who think it it's ok to take a pill to prevent something that they think is going to happen - for example, a friend mentioned that she needs to take a strong pain pill (I won't mention the name here) because she "may" get back pain. That's not what pills were made for. If you worry about the side effects of even the mildest drugs, then this book is for you. I hate taking any kind of medication, and am always on the lookout for alternatives to medication. Give me an herb or a fruit, or vegetable, and tell me to take that for a medical problem, and I'll happily give it a try!

I like this book because it's filled with information on various natural remedies. There's a reason God created these herbs and plants - for us or the animals to use them to cure ourselves. Sure, we can't cure everything, but this book certainly shows you how to "cure" or control many, many problems. I highly recommend it!

Another one I love is "Back to Eden" by Jethro Kloss.
