Editorial Review:

The first in-depth examination of the sacred underpinnings of the world of Native American medicinal herbalism

• Reveals how shamans and healers “talk” with plants to discover their medicinal properties

• Includes the prayers and medicine songs associated with each of the plants examined

• By the author of The Secret Teachings of Plants

As humans evolved on Earth they used plants for everything imaginable--food, weapons, baskets, clothes, shelter, and medicine. Indigenous peoples the world over have been able to gather knowledge of plant uses by communicating directly with plants and honoring the sacred relationship between themselves and the plant world.

In Sacred Plant Medicine Stephen Harrod Buhner looks at the long-standing relationship between indigenous peoples and plants and examines the techniques and states of mind these cultures use to communicate with the plant world. He explores the sacred dimension of plant and human interactions and the territory where plants are an expression of Spirit. For each healing plant described in the book, Buhner presents medicinal uses, preparatory guidelines, and ceremonial elements such as prayers and medicine songs associated with its use.

The Book of Herbal Wisdom: Using Plants As Medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Matthew Wood brings a variety of his gifts together as writer, historian, herbalist and a man of prodigious memory and herbal storytelling. This book stands out as my favorite herbal reference because it treats each herb to a whole chapter. Any lover of plants knows that there is much more to describe an herb than the usual sort of important lists of information most commonly shared in herbal reference books. This book helps one to get to know these 41 herbs much as you would know a friend or relative in their habits and ways of helping.

I pick up this book over and over simply because it is such good reading and I don't remember everything. If you like to learn through story and beautiful prose, this just may be your book! It fills a very unique niche of herbal literature.

The 41 herbs are quite available in the Midwest habitat and many overlap into other areas.

My only disappointment is that there is not a second volume to cover the many other herbs that didn't fit into the first volume.

Editorial Review:

Drawing on the healing traditions of Native Americans, Quakers, and the English, as well as botanical literature and his own observations, the author explains the medicinal uses of thirty-six herbs for alleviating a variety of ailments. Original. IP. "

Not all together accurate 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I think this book offers some good information and food for thought. I do think it should be read in combination with other books on the same subject and EVERYONE should speak with their doctors before trying 5-HTP. Some of the information was inaccurate. For example, the vesicles are located in the presynaptic nerve (axon) terminal NOT the dendrites. If his basic physiology lesson is incorrect you should hesitate to believe everything else as gospel. Worth the read though.

Editorial Review:

The most authoritative and comprehensive guide to realizing the amazing health benefits of 5-HTP

Written by one of America's leading naturopathic doctors, 5-HTP explains how this natural amino acid can safely and effectively regulate low serotonin levels, which have been linked to depression, obesity, insomnia, migraines, and anxiety.

5-HTP is also a powerful antioxidant that can protect the body from free-radical damage, reducing the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer. 5-HTP has already helped thousands, and Dr. Murray, citing extensive scientific studies and case histories, shows how this groundbreaking supplement can help you.

Great source for herbs 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My copy is older (1986). I imagine there is a new and updated version out.

It is co-written by Dr. Vasant Lad. Dr. Lad is the administrator at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM.

I have gotten much use out of this book. It is based on the ayurvedic medical tradition. Herbs, American, European and Oriental are all described and assessed according to the ayurvedic principals. There are first aid treatments, English and Sanskrit glossaries and Latin appendix.

Ayurveda can be confusing to people who have little or no background in it. The descriptions in this book are simple and easy to understand. Connecting the herbs and their properties is easy with the charts and information included. There is an excellent chapter on `how to prepare and use herbs according to Ayurveda'.

This book is an excellent primer on using herbal remedies in the Ayurvedic tradition and also an excellent sourcebook on regular herbal usage. Even if you don't ascribe to Ayurveda the information on the herbs is very useful

Editorial Review:

For the first time, here is a detailed explanation and classification of herbs, using the ancient system of Ayurveda. More than 270 herbs are listed, with 108herbs explained in detail. Included are many of the most commonly used westernherbs with a profound Ayurvedic perspective. Important Chinese and specialAyurvedic herbs are introduced. Beautiful diagrams and charts, as well asdetailed glossaries, appendices and index are included.

Very basic Herbal 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very good, but basic herbal. It is great for someone starting out, and if this isn't in depth enough for you, or after this book, i would certainly recommedThe Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook: A Home Manual James Green's The Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook.

A Very good book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is so wonderful. Its warm informative and inviting. It makes you want to jump in right away. The directions are clear and simple enough not to intimadate. It is a very good thing that the author suggests only non toxic plants as a start. She is an insightful and wise teacher. I am looking forward to making the medicinal wines. The stories are also a nice touch. I will be purchasing her other books.

Intensely scientific 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Very useful aromatherapy guide. It is intensely scientific...particularly the 2nd chapter entitled "Essential Oils - Definition and Distillation"; bored me out of my mind. It has a wonderful chapter on self-treatment and all the precautions with a guide of all the essential oils and their uses. I am glad I bought it, however I am sure there are better guides out there.

Editorial Review:

A chemist and aromatherapy practitioner provides scientific proof for the effectiveness of using essential oils.

Aromatherapy is the fastest-growing segment of the body care industry, an effective and deeply pleasurable way to maintain well-being. Lots Of Hype And Little Substance 1 out of 5 stars.
71 of 89 people found this review helpful.

When a book is entitled "Wheatgrass: Natures Finest Medicine" you expect the author to be enthusiastic about wheatgrass, but this book goes beyond enthusiasm and into cultishness. Other than a few tables of nutritional information, there is little factual information about wheatgrass. Nutrition isn't even discussed until the fifth chapter - after chapters extolling the great leaders of the wheatgrass movement and promoting the spiritual value of consuming wheatgrass, including comments about revitalizing your cosmic cell consciousness, and how Jesus (as recorded in secret gospels) encouraged his disciples to chew grass. Then there are the many true life stories of miraculous healings from cancer and spiritual awakenings obtained by eating wheatgrass, not to mention a lengthy promotion of various health and spiritual renewal sanctuaries and resorts. It may well be true that wheatgrass is a wonderful health food, but this book contains so much hype that even what substance there is becomes suspect.

Editorial Review:

New, expanded, and improved, this worldwide best seller has everything you need to know about this wonder plant and its miracle cures. This is possibly the most up-to-date, nutrition filled, research packed book on wheatgrass in print. Learn how to grow wheatgrass and use it for maximum therapeutic benefit in a total health restoration program. Also included are testimonies by people who have been cured using wheatgrass and the history of wheatgrass going back to biblical times,

Great Starter Book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book has some great information in it. I would recommend this book to others. The only reason I gave it four stars is because ultimately I am lazy and probably won't end up following any of the "recipes" she provides. Not to mention that the bath recipes could end up plugging my pipes! Aviva does have some great resources in the back of the book to buy products though...a bonus for me! If anything now I know what herbs to look for in already made products.

Great Book for the New Mother 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has been an awsome reference. When my son gets a fever they go high. I didn't like always giving tylenol. Aviva gives great ideas for this and so much more. I have looked up so many ailments for my kids, but just as much for friends that I have told about the book. She gives advice on most of the common illnesses, including a breif summary, causes, symptoms, dietary recommendations, Herbal recommendations, remedies and more. She is not against a doctors care and actually recommends it when neccisary. But she gives many other common sence options to try before taking your child in for a two minute appointment that costs $100 and ends up with a, "yep he has a cold give it a few days and he'll be fine."

Editorial Review:

In Natural Healthy Babies And Children, midwife and herbalist Aviva Romm offers an A-to-Z handbook that addresses common health issues of children, from newborns to pre-adolescents. Aviva's whole-child approach integrates herbal remedies, nutrition, hygiene, and alternative health techniques with supportive, informed parenting. This book is indispensable reading for families seeking safe, effective ways to practise healing techniques at home.
