Unresolved Emotions create Conflict in the Body 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

"All your thoughts and feelings get translated into chemicals that fire off throughout your body, altering the chemical composition and behavior of your cells." ~ Deb Shapiro

If you have ever wondered how emotions affect the body, then "Your Body Speaks Your Mind" is an excellent place to start. Not only will you be able to understand your symptoms, you will also know how to eradicate them. This book contains many answers, especially to the following questions:

How do neuropeptides carry information from the mind to the body?
Do all diseases have their origin in the mind?
How do unresolved emotions affect your health?
Why are certain feelings linked to specific body parts?
What are the specific steps you can take to heal the body with your mind?

Deb Shapiro makes an interesting connection between love and health. She also shows how creative visualization and writing in a journal can help to take away symptoms of illness. By giving up negative emotions you can literally heal the body from the inside out. This book then becomes most useful as you make the connections and start the healing process.

"70 percent of patient visits to the doctor are for stress-related illnesses." ~ pg. 5

Some of the topics in this book include: Insomnia, Addiction, Nervous Breakdowns, Depression, Anxiety, Skin Conditions, Infertility, Menopause, The Digestive System, Eating Disorders and Heart Issues.

A CD is included with this book and contains visualization practices. I can recommend this book very highly and think it would make a perfect addition to any health library.

How should I put it?
Take care of yourself.
Your body might last a bit longer.
Your mind might last a bit longer.
Does it have to be presented as mystical ancient knowledge?

Bought This Book for My Father 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my 82 year old Father after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
He told me the book was one of the best he had ever read. My father was a highly educated, intelligent man that gained inspiration from this book. I am grateful to Mr. Chopra for this.

Ageless Body, Timeless Mind 3 out of 5 stars.

Some very interesting information and concepts in this book, however, I did not close this book feeling more enlightened that before reading the book. If you have a strong religous background, you probably know most of the concepts in this book although you may increase your terminology on subjects such as quantum healing and ayurveda. The book is good for anyone who wants has a negative view of aging and wants to improve the quality of their life as they age.

Editorial Review:

There is nothing inevitable about aging--that is the inspiring message from Dr. Deepak Chopra. "Once again Dr. Chopra presents us with information that can help us live long, healthy lives. For all those interested in a long, full life, this book is a valuable resource."--Bernie Siegel, M.D., author of Love, Medicine and Miracles Over 1.5 million copies sold. National bestseller. Living the Six Foundations... Do You? 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Having lived and breathed Gabriel's teachings at his community in Arizona since 2001 I can truly say that there is so much depth, wisdom and beauty to be found within these pages that you will keep coming back to it again & again.

This book cannot be taken in one sitting, nor can personal spiritual transformation. The knowledge in this book is a summary of 35 years of the author actually living this way. How many books can you find where the teachings are actually lived by the author.

This book is to be savored, Meditated On, Lived & Experienced one bite at a time.

The shallow reviews on this page from people who have never actually met Gabriel, Lived the Six Foundations or even read the whole book seem really odd to me.

Regarding nutrition this book covers: Living Water, Minerals, Enzymes, B12, Fasting, Low Glycemic, Organic, Veganism, Ayurveda, and yes Undereating.... and if you have ever eaten at the Tree of Life Cafe you will realize the food is amazing, packed with nutrition, satifying and alive... people go home feeling like they have certainly feasted.

On a daily basis at the center/ community we meditate for world peace, share with like minded people, practice yoga, teach food prep classes, eat organic live foods... and teach people to go out and live their own dharma (life purpose)that helps bring peace into their own communities.

The teachings are there for us to take what works for us.... like Gabriels other book Conscious Eating focussed on Individualizing the Diet... This book focusses clearly on Individualizing the Spiritual Life. The six foundations are simple... and contain levels & depths of knowledge and flexibility for each unique beautiful soul walking the planet.

I invite you to take a taste of this book, experience & live some of the wisdom & teachings and share it with family & friends.

Editorial Review:

When we eat, can we feed the soul as well as the body? Can a diet have impact on spirituality? Spiritual Nutrition empowers readers to develop personal diets that are appropriate to their lifestyles and spiritual practices. Drawing on 14 years of clinical experience and research, Dr. Gabriel Cousens discusses nutritional issues that can help answer these questions, including raw vs. cooked food; high vs. low protein; the concepts of assimilation and fasting; alkaline - acid balance; attitudes about food; nutrients, energy, and structure building.

In addition, Cousens shares his new dietary system of "spiritual nutrition" that is based on the relationship that the color of the food has to corresponding colors of the human chakra system, hence, the "rainbow diet." For true nourishment, he strongly promotes the connection of diet to meditation, fellowship, wisdom, and love.

Editorial Review:

Why does a "clean-living" person get sick, while a more obvious candidate stays healthy?  Why does someone with a fatal illness suddenly become well, while another with a more benign condition dies?  In Why People Don't Heal and How They Can, best-selling author, medical intuitive, and teacher Caroline Myss explores the deep-seated, spiritual causes of illness, and the symbolic lessons that underlie it.  "In the 1980s, when the New Age movement was growing like crazy, people began to express a willingness to take responsibility for their illness," says Myss.  "We were all convinced that complete recovery of health was just one psychological insight away.  Yet after a few years of trying every available healing regimen and publicly sharing the inner wounds of their psyches, people still didn't get well."  As frustrated and puzzled as everyone else, Myss privately began to wonder if somehow they were all on the wrong track.

Then in 1988 Myss had an experience that made her realize the power that lies in being wounded. "One day, in passing, I introduced a friend of mine to two gentlemen I was talking with," says Myss.  "Within two minutes, my friend managed to let these men know that she was an incest survivor.  Her admission had nothing whatsoever to do with the conversation we'd been having, and in a flash I realized that she was using her wounds as leverage.  She had gotten to the point that she defined herself by a negative experience."  Once Myss became attuned to this phenomenon, which she quickly dubbed woundology, she saw it everywhere.  "In workshops and in daily life I saw that, rather than working to get beyond their wounds, people were using them as social currency," says Myss.  "They were confusing the therapeutic value of self-expression with permission to manipulate others with their wounds.  Who would want to leave that behind?  Health never commands so much clout!"  It was then that Myss began to challenge the assumption that people always want to heal.

Why People Don't Heal and How They Can shows how choosing to stay stuck in woundology often comes at a terrible price:  the loss of health.  "We are given a finite amount of energy to run our physical bodies, our minds, and our emotions, as well as to manage our external environments," says Myss.  "When we choose to siphon off some of this energy to keep negative events in our histories alive, we are robbing that energy from our cell tissue, making ourselves vulnerable to the development of disease."  Once this path is seen as the true energy debt that it is, choosing health means choosing to release the weight of the past.  Too often, this is something that people just can't or won't do.

While the practice of woundology is a common source of illness, personal negativity is not always the cause; as contradictory as it seems, sometimes illness can be the answer to prayer.  "Our spiritual development is meant to culminate in an ability to see things impersonally, to recognize the greater meaning of life's challenges apart from the literal events," says Myss.  "To that end, illness can physically guide us onto a path of insight and learning upon which we would otherwise never have set foot.  It is an unparallelled catalyst for expanding personal consciousness."

Why People Don't Heal details the intended path of one's spiritual evolution, asserting that it is a microcosm of the spiritual development of humankind over the ages.  "With each astrological age (which lasts about 2,000 years), human consciousness develops in new ways," says Myss.  "During each age a particular kind of energy dominates, and it affects people's lives, health, and spiritual outlooks, leading to certain perceptions about the nature of reality and the power of the human spirit."  Since the ladder of awareness that humankind has climbed over centuries is the same one each of us is meant to ascend in our own individual lifetime, we can then study the spiritual lessons of the ages of Aries (Tribal power), Pisces (Individual), and Aquarius (Symbolic) and apply them to our own human natures; to fail to do so has distinct health consequences.

After describing the reasons why people don't heal, Myss delves into how they can; the first step often consists of calling one's spirit back, retrieving one's energy from the places it has gotten "stuck" in one's past.  In practical terms, this means learning to see that difficult experiences are meant to be learned from, and gotten over.  Why People Don't Heal and How They Can  also details the process of learning to read the body, recognizing that its illnesses are very specific expressions of particular spiritual issues (an idea Myss introduced in her bestselling book Anatomy of The Spirit).  In every case, seeing the spiritual lesson that underlies any illness requires a shift in consciousness.  "I believe that all illnesses can be thought of as transformation experiences," says Myss.  "Looking upon an illness as an opportunity to grow in self-awareness activates the potential for healing that lies dormant when you take a passive position or descend into self-pity.  When an illness is a part of your spiritual journey, no medical intervention can heal you until your spirit has begun to make the changes that the illness was designed to inspire."

As easy as it might sound, the prospect of self-awareness is terrifying to most people, because every internal change in perspective or belief activates an external shift, usually destroying the familiar (and therefore comforting) outlines of their lives.  Why People Don't Heal and How They Can scrutinizes why many people are so scared of change that they will unconsciously sabotage their own healing process rather than make changes in their emotional and psychological lives to effect a shift in their biology.  "I often say that 'your biography becomes your biology,'" says Myss.  "If you are sick, you must recognize that living life as you always have seemingly brought you to illness.  Although there are no guarantees about healing, if you are able to enter into a process of change, then you maximize your chances of getting well if not on the physical plane, then more importantly in a spiritual sense."

Finally, Why People Don't Heal explains why an intellectual understanding of what you need to do to heal is not enough; to ignite the healing fire, you must believe it with your heart.  "The greatest illusion of the New Age is that awareness alone heals," says Myss.  "Believe me, awareness by itself does nothing!  Putting the healing process in motion requires a regular spiritual practice and discipline, not just exercise and clean living."

Inner Phys. and Your 3 out of 5 stars.

Found it very interesting. I am familiar with some of the energy techniques but am excited about learning cranial sacral since reading this book. An easy read.

Your Inner Physician and You 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Easy read, helpful for practitioners and patients to get in touch with how our bodies have the ability to heal.

the beginnings 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It's the story of John Upledger discovering Cranio Sacral. Mostly stories of patients cured, of how he discovered that the dura mater was always moving, how he found all of his techniques. (explained in his other books)

so, yes, it's interesting, but not very practical. this book explains no techniques as in the other ones, and this disappointed me a little.

Editorial Review:

The "inner physician" is that part of the psyche that can heal--when one becomes aware of the psycho-emotional issues that come with pain. Dr. Upledger describes his methods through personal accounts such as that from Mary Ellen Clark, the Olympic diver, whom he cured of dizziness.

Review by former physiology Teaching Fellow and yoga practioner 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent beginning book on breathing for anyone who is interested in yoga. It covers the importance of breathing, basic respiratory physiology and the relationship between science and yoga.

The authors of this book are credible and have excellent professional credentials and established practices. They are associated with the Himalayan Institute in Honesdale, PA that has a long standing commitment to getting science, modern psychology and yoga together. Many of their publications are excellent and certainly this one is as well.

I think any yoga practioner at any level will benefit from this book and even very experienced people will learn a lot. As the title suggests, this book focuses on the practical aspects of breathing and provides a good foundation or launching point for moving on to pranayama practice. However, the value add is the tie in to modern science.

As part of my living, I do workshops on such topics as meditation, pranayama and biofeedback, loving-kindness practices and other topics that integrate East and West. Before becoming involved in psychology and spirituality, I was both a research scientist and Teaching Fellow in Physiology. While I am not an expert at respiratory physiology or a top pranayama practioner, I have an established yoga practice and enough expertise to judge the merit of this book.

If you are serious about the breath and especially about pranayama, I would pick up "Light on Pranayama" by B.K.S. Iyengar. This book is very comprehensive and covers the physiology of the various breathing practices in great depth. If you are looking at breating for relaxation, you may also want to consider some of the meditation resources listed on my listmania lists. I also have a yoga resource list that might be helpful for those interested in pranayama. Another book in the pranayama vein that is quite popular is "The Yoga of Breath" by Richard Rosen.

In summary, this is a good book on the basics of breathing as a foundation for a yoga practice. It provides the basic concepts required to move on to more advanced breathing techniques such as pranayama.

Editorial Review:

Describes the anatomy and physiology of breathing, as well as the subtle yogic science of prana.

Great view of connective tissue as a physical structure 4 out of 5 stars.
73 of 87 people found this review helpful.

Before I read this book I had never really considered the functioning of connective tissue as a "web-like" structure within which bone and muscle articulate. The authors contend, starting with embrionic anatomy and onward, that the c.t. forms a bed within which cells differentiate. From this view point of c.t. being a primary base for physical form, we are shown how all parts of the web are connected, and create "bands" that ideally are nether too tight or too loose. I didn't know much about Rolfing either, but apparently this bodywork deals specificly with c.t. Good book, great publishing company.

Editorial Review:

The result of more than two decades of research and practice, The Endless Web presents in clear, readable language a comprehensive guide to understanding and working effectively with the myofascial system, the 'packing material' of the body. Myofascia is a flexible network of tissue that surrounds, cushions, and supports muscles, bones, and organs. It also acts as a riverbed containing the flow of interstitial fluid, and is a critical influence on the immune and hormonal systems. In daily life, this connective tissue is an underlying determinant of movement quality, modd, alertness, and general well-being. The Endless Web is a fully illustrated guide to understanding how myofascia works, it supportive role within the body's anatomy, and how gentle manipulation of the myofascial tissue is central to lasting therapeutic intervention and how it can be integrated into any bodywork practice.

Not what the title suggest 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Although this book has some useful information it is not as the title suggest. It is not a "diet" book. I bought this book because my husband and I are trying to change our diet to a more PH balanced way of living. We have already found that by balancing the PH levels we can all but eliminated acid reflux. When I saw this book I thought it would have a list of alkaline and acidic foods and a diet plan to follow. This book is nothing more than testimony as to what vitamins you should take in order to achieve better health. The test that is referred to is nothing more than taking a supplement on an empty stomach, waiting for results and translating how red you are into the meat eater, grain eater or combo of the two. So again, while there is some useful information I would not have bought this book had I had a chance to flip through it before hand.

Editorial Review:

Balancing the body's acid alkaline pH factor to improve health is the hot new treatment in alternative medicine. The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet clarifies for you this cutting-edge option with an easy-to-follow food combination program and herbal therapy regime that redefines the notion of a "well-balanced diet." By balancing the body's acidity levels, this simple plan can help toward curing various medical conditions, including arthritis, hepatitis, insomnia, alcoholism, and kidney disease. With information organized by affliction, you can quickly find the help you need. Anecdotal success stories offer inspiring evidence that this dietary/lifestyle change really works.

An Exciting New Approach to Regaining Health Without Surgery!

Fact: By the time they reach menopause 40 percent of American women have at least one uterine fibroid; 600,000 women are diagnosed each year.

Fact: Fibroids are the leading cause of hysterectomy, the second most common surgical procedure performed on women.

Fact: Natural, holistic medicine can heal fibroids without invasive surgery.

Fibroid tumors, while usually benign, can swell a woman's uterus to the size of a basketball, frequently causing heavy menstrual bleeding, cramping, bladder infections, and even infertility. Most doctors recommend surgery as the only answer. Now this innovative holistic program brings new hope for a surgery-free life to millions of American women.

Dr. Allan Warshowsky combines traditional Western medicine and holistic science to cure not just the fibroid condition but also the underlying imbalances and systemic dysfunctions that can cause fibroids.
