This little book is lovely as a gift for someone, especially yourself. It contains excerpts from Jon Kabat-Zinn's masterpiece "Coming to Our Senses", a tome about mindfulness and meditation. In this video I open the book, show you the layout and read two different quotes. I've kept the video to about two minutes in length. This is a book that anyone interested in living more serenely and more alive can enjoy, whether or not you've had the pleasure of reading the main book that it was excerpted from. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Mindfulness opens us up to the possibility of being fully human as we are, and of expressing the humane in our way of being. Mindlessness de facto closes us up and denies us the fullness of our being alive. This book may on the surface appear to be merely another offering in the genre of daily readings. But deep within these 108 selections lie messages of profound wisdom in a contemporary and practical form that can lead to both healing and transformation. We so urgently need to rotate in consciousness in order to safeguard what precious sanity is available to us on this planet. How we carry ourselves will determine the direction the world takes because, in a very real way, we are the world we inhabit. Our world is continuously being shaped by our participation in everything around us and within us through mindfulness. This is the great work of awareness. Welcome to the threshold #133; to the fullness of arriving at your own door!

Taking Care of Ourselves 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A decade or so ago a friend who was going through a rough patch in her life had a therapist who highly recommended this book of meditations. I happened to be in Barnes and Noble with her when she bought Melody Beattie's book, and after perusing a few of the passages, I bought one for myself. What a difference reading The Language of Letting Go made (and continues to make) in my life.

I've bought and given away several copies of Letting Go since that night in the bookstore in the hope that my friends will benefit as much as I have from these sage words of "gentle" advice and reminders that we deserve "the best that life and love have to offer." A few of my personal favorites are the reminders to be patient and realize that timing is perfect, that it's okay to say "no" sometimes and equally okay to say yes to what feels right and good, and that we are responsible for taking care of ourselves.

The realization that we are being divinely led and that we need to trust our Higher Power is reinforced throughout the book. Anyone interested in growth and self-care will benefit from reading it.

Editorial Review:

Melody Beattie integrates her own life experiences and fundamental recovery reflections in this unique daily meditation book written especially for those of us who struggle with the issue of codependency.

Problems are made to be solved, Melody reminds us, and the best thing we can do is take responsibility for our own pain and self-care. In this daily inspirational book, Melody provides us with a thought to guide us through the day and she encourages us to remember that each day is an opportunity for growth and renewal.

Mind-full 5 out of 5 stars.

Explore the new realm, of your mind. Becoming aware is the first step to solve any problem. If you do not know there is a problem, how can you fix it? This book is the prequel to, You.

Editorial Review:

In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen

I received many books after the death of my husband but ths one is by far the very best. It is beautifully written and very helpful to the bereaved no matter he or she happens to be on the journey of grief recovery. I lead a bevreavement group and give a copy of this book to our members and also to other persons who are suffering a loss. Very worhtwhile.

A Shared Journey Through Loss 5 out of 5 stars.

Earlier this year my 43 year old daughter died unexpectedly of liver failure and I was searching for encouraging, inspirational support of my grief. Turning to Amazon I found several reviews that sounded promising and the free shipping on the order made me consider "Healing After Loss" as an add on under the listing of "People Who Bought....Also Bought...".
This small book has become the single most helpful tool in my journey through grief. The author unexpectedly lost her teenaged daughter and offers a unique perspective on the deep bond between mother and daughter without being overtly maudlin or "religious". However, the book is appropriate for anyone experiencing loss, not only of a child but also of a spouse or other loved one and certainly for professionals involved with the bereavement process.

Editorial Review:

For those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, here are strength and thoughtful words to inspire and comfort.

Editorial Review:

Perhaps no other person has done more to bring mindfulness meditation into the contemporary landscape of America than Jon Kabat-Zinn. Th rough a number of research studies, and through Kabat-Zinn's pioneering work at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he is founder of its world-renowned Stress Reduction Clinic, mindfulness is finally being recognized as a highly effective tool for dealing with stress, chronic pain, and other illnesses. Today, with a four-part home training course, Jon Kabat-Zinn offers listeners the definitive mindfulness meditation practice on CD. "We are not trying to actively achieve a state of deep relaxation—or any other state for that matter—while practicing mindfulness," he teaches. "But interestingly, by opening to an awareness of how things actually are in the present moment, we often taste very deep states of relaxation and well-being—of both body and mind." Join the bestselling author of Coming to Our Senses (Hyperion, 2005) and Wherever You Go, There You Are (Hyperion 1995) to develop and deepen your personal mindfulness practice, and to taste the universal aspects of stillness, clarity, wisdom, compassion, and well-being that Guided Mindfulness Meditation offers.

Editorial Review:

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black.

Things I Wish I'd Known Beforehand.... 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have been using this CD for about 2 weeks now, mostly in the car on the way to work and on the way to pick up my kids from school. For the most part I enjoy the "Ah" meditations. Although Dr. Dyer's tonality is off at times, and that can be distracting, I enjoy the gentle reminders and directions. But I do have some problems with some of the affirmations that I find rather negative (ie: "My judgments prevent me from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances"). To make the most of the cd I no longer listen to the affirmations, instead I rewind back to the guided meditation and focus on my own affirmations for the day.

I was finally able to listen to the evening "Om" meditation and was very disappointed. The Om sound is fine, but the meditation itself disturbed me. It is very "God-oriented" and directs one to "find God within yourself" and really learn how to love God. As Dr. Dyer continues through the Om meditation he diverges from thankfulness and gratitude affirmations and begins to intersperse quotes from Meher Baba on the 12 ways of realizing God - Longing ("have the same longing and thirst for union with God as one who has been laying for days in the hot sun of the Sahara experiences the longing for water, then you will realize God."), Peace of Mind, Humility, Desperation ("if you experience the desperation that causes a man to commit suicide and you feel that you cannot live without seeing God, then you will see God"), Faith, Fidelity, Control Through Love, Selfless Service, Renunciation ("if you renounce for God everything physical, mental and spiritual then you have God"), Obedience, Surrender, Love ("if you have that love for me which St. Francis had for Jesus then not only will you realize God, but you will please God"). Then he finishes off with Shaloms.

I wish that a transcript of the CD had been provided or that more detailed information had been included in the "book description" as the evening meditation is definitely not about manifesting or even gratitude, but rather Meher Baba's religious philosophy. Dr. Dyer also states that this is not the way that he does this meditation every day, but then does not go on to explain how he does do it and we're left to wonder what the difference is.

Great book and program for starting meditation 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I had never meditated before and this wonderful 8 week program really got me started. Each week there is a different technique to try and it only takes 8 minutes a day. The approach is very simple and easy to follow. The author is very encouraging, as many beginners (including myself) don't necessarily "get it" at first and think they're doing it wrong. Eventually, I had my own "Ah ha!" moment and believe the practice is doing me a lot of good. In addition to setting the foundation for a daily meditative practice for relaxation, it has also helped me deal with any stressful events by providing a technique to slow down for a minute, take some deep breaths and calm myself.

One additional note - this book does not have any religious references and separates the meditation from any sort of religious spiritual experience. It focuses simply on meditation for reducing stress, inducing relation and increasing focus and happiness.

I would highly recommend this book to any beginners. With only 8 minutes a day, this is a do-able program!!!

Editorial Review:

In recent years, mainstream Americans have begun to come around to meditation in a big way-and scientific studies are suggesting that the physical and mental benefits are solid and real. But to many, it remains something mystical and inaccessible...and spiritually-oriented tomes on the market don't do much to make it easier.

As interest in meditation continues to grow, this book offers a simple, no-nonsense program to help beginners experience reduced stress and increased focus in only eight minutes a day. Designed by meditation expert and bestselling author Victor Davich, this program teaches the basic principles of meditation while clearing up the misconceptions and myths that too often get in the way.

Editorial Review:

When it comes to creating the life you want, Shakti Gawain literally wrote the book. Now considered a classic, Creative Visualization teaches readers how to use their imaginations to manifest their deepest desires. In a straight-talking narrative, Gawain uses the first part to cover the basics, with chapters such as "How to Visualize," "Affirmations," and "Creative Visualization Only Works for the Good." Once she shows readers how visualization actually works, Gawain moves on to loftier discussions, such as "Contacting Your Higher Self," "Meeting Your Guide," "Setting Goals," and "Treasure Maps."

Fear not; this isn't a spiritual-lightweight book for people with a severe case of the "gimmes." Gawain has her priorities in the right place, and she cautions readers that creative visualization will not serve greed or shallow-minded thinking. For example, she discourages the cycle of trying to have more money, so you can do what you want in life, so you will be happier. "The way it actually works is the reverse," she explains. "You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want." Yet she also writes an excellent chapter on letting go of the misguided guilt that inhibits readers from becoming truly prosperous. --Gail Hudson

Editorial Review:

Ten years ago, Jon Kabat-Zinn changed the way we thought about awareness in everyday life with his now-classic introduction to mindfulness, Wherever You Go, There You Are. Now, with Coming to Our Senses, he provides the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness and our physical and spiritual well-being. With scientific rigor, poetic deftness, and compelling personal stories, Jon Kabat-Zinn examines the mysteries and marvels of our minds and bodies, describing simple, intuitive ways in which we can come to a deeper understanding, through our senses, of our beauty, our genius, and our life path in a complicated, fear-driven, and rapidly changing world. In each of the books eight parts, Jon Kabat-Zinn explores another facet of the great adventure of healing ourselvesand our worldthrough mindful awareness, with a focus on the sensescapes of our lives and how a more intentional awareness of the senses, including the human mind itself, allows us to live more fully and more authentically. By coming to our sensesboth literally and metaphorically by opening to our innate connectedness with the world around us and within uswe can become more compassionate, more embodied, more aware human beings, and in the process, contribute to the healing of the body politic as well as our own lives in ways both little and big.
