Laird Hamilton has been hailed as the world's greatest big-wave surfer. His first book, Force of Nature, allows readers a rare glimpse inside the unique philosophy that has created his circumstances, and not the other way around. After all, this is a man whose biological father abandoned him shortly after he was born; whose first job was working on a pig far; who dropped out of school in eleventh grade. And then the career decision: surfer. Though earning enough to pay the rent as any kind of surfer is next to impossible, Hamilton has ended up in the place we all desire to be: doing exactly what he loves, becoming the world's best in the process, making a great living, being surrounded by nature and family, radiating peak health and fitness, and succeeding by any definition of the word. How did he get there? And more importantly, how can the rest of us join him?Force of Nature is a detailed map to that destination, with Laird Hamilton as the reader's guide. It's not about chasing trophies or accolades or cash. It's about quality over quantitysoul and being true to your physical, mental, and spiritual roots. Not only is it possible to thrive in the modern world without adopting its harmful habits, it's essential. And not only has Hamilton mastered this balance, he makes a compelling and articulate case that anyone who wants to can do the same. This book is a deeply authoritative and cutting-edge guide to peak fitness in mind, body, sould, and surfing. It comes directly from the source and his inner circle, which includes those at the vanguard of sports, training, nutrition, and more. Former pro volleyball player Gabrielle Reece; surf legend Dave Kalama; fitness gurus Paul Chek, T.R. Goodman, and Don Wildman; and Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis all contribute their knowledge. MUST READ HEALTH BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am a retired person who reads many "health" books each month. This is one of the three best health books I have read in the past six months, and that is saying a lot! I was diagnosed by my doctor as being low in Vitamin D (a 22, when we should be much higher). Aside from the stunning fact that a conventional doctor " actually caught a vitamin deficiency, I was shocked that I, a vitamin chomper of the first order, could be deficient in any nutrient. I got Dr. Dowd's book to check up on my own doctor's recommendation and realized she was more than right. In the bargain, I learned about this incredible steroid and its importance to our entire body. This information is crucial because most of us are very careful to "protect" ourselves from the sun. I did,--very successfully apparently. I am recommending this book to many friends and relatives for its relevance to cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and a host of medical conditions.

Editorial Review:

Groundbreaking new research has traced the source of a wide array of to a single common factor—vitamin D deficiency. Leading rheumatologist and researcher Dr. James Dowd reveals the causes of vitamin D deficiency and offers a simple, easy-to-follow five-step program that can eliminate or alleviate a host of seemingly incurable conditions, such as arthritis, in as little as six weeks. Better yet, by staying on the program, you can enjoy robust health and improved fitness for the rest of your life.

Is there a cure? 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

G. Edward Griffin outlines a very interesting story on the medical and political/monetary issues of cancer. A very interesting read. Very overwhelming at times when Mr. Griffin describes the manipulation that has gone on to prevent the use of a safe, effective and inexpensive treatmant for cancer. I would never trust a single source for a story of this magnitude, but Mr. Griffin outlines the story and evidence quite well with many references to where this evidence comes from, often times which is congressional testimony. Well worth the read as is his other book, "The Creature from Jekyll Island".

Editorial Review:

Mr. Griffin marshals the evidence that cancer is a deficiency disease like scurvy or pellagra aggravated by the lack of an essential food compound in modem mans diet. That substance is vitamin B17. In its purified form developed for cancer therapy, it is known as Laetrile.

Why has orthodox medicine waged war against this non drug approach? The author contends that the answer is to be found, not in science, but in politics and is based upon the hidden economic and power agenda of those who dominate the medical establishment.

This is a new edition of the book. It is the most complete and authoritative treatise ever produced on Laetrile. It explains the theory by which Laetrile is believed to work. Case histories are included.

DON'T LET THIS BOOK BE YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF INFORMATION ABOUT VITAMIN B 12 DEFICIENCY ! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

If you have or suspect having a vitamin B 12 deficiency or if you need to learn about this deficiency for any reason, I recommend you read carefully the book " Could it be B 12 ? An epidemic of Misdiagnoses " by Sally M. Pacholok and Jeffrey J. Stuart. But don't let it be your only source of information about the deficiency. Because at least half of alternative reliable scientific reports about this subject strongly disagree with the major allegations of the authors of this book. You must also be aware of the alternative opinions before deciding on what to do about your vitamin B 12 deficiency. I am not a medical expert and do not say who is right or wrong. However, I am glad I researched other sources of information after I was diagnosed with B 12 deficiency and after I read this book. I couldn't find any other books on this subject but there are a lot of serious scientific reports published on the internet by credible hospitals, laboratories, medical journals etc. You don't have to be a medical expert to understand them, they are written for the general public. Some of the information on the internet is crap but a significant portion is reliable , very informative and based on sound scientific reasearch and experiments.

Search from Google under the headings of vitamin B12 deficiency, homocysteine, methyl malonic acid, intrinsic factor and pernicious anemia. A lot of articles will pop up among them by reliable hospitals such as the Mayo Clinic and some labs etc. Also search under the same headings from the websites of Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia, American Family Doctor and Lab test on line. There are many other websites that include reliable information on Vitamin B 12 deficiency. After reading the book " Could it be B 12 ? An epidemic of Misdiagnoses " my initial reaction was an anger towards my doctor who diagnosed me with a B 12 deficiency believing that he had given me false information. I also had written a very favorable review of this book immediately after having read it two and a half months ago on January 19 2008. I have hereby replaced on April 11th 2008 my previous review of the book with this one based on my subsequent research on the internet about the topic from about ten different reliable scientific reports from different sources. My initial review was based only on the book. The present review is based on both the book and my subsequent extensive research. About half of the medical literature agrees with the authors of this book on the method of diagnosing and treatment of the vitamin B 12 deficiency. The remaining 50 % that disagree also base their views on sound scientific studies.

The authors of the book claim that most doctors in the world are ignorant about vitamin B12 deficiency. After finishing the book I initially bought this argument. However, after conducting the research on the internet I mentioned above I disagree that most doctors are ignorant about it. Surely there are a lot of doctors who are in fact ignorant about it and who misdiagnose. Even my doctor told me some things about vitamin B 12 deficiency some of which I still think are wrong. However, not all doctors who disagree with the authors are ignorant ; there are many among the disagreeing doctors who are very knowledgeable about this subject. Their methods of diagnosing and treating the deficiency maybe different than that of the authors. That does not necessarily make them ignorant. You can see this for yourself by reading their reports on the internet where they express alternative opinions about vitamin B 12 deficiency. Yet the authors of the book accuse all doctors who disagree with them with ignorance. I feel that it is unfair and unconvincing to accuse everyone who disagrees with you with ignorance. I got suspicious about that and found the alternative opinions. I am glad I did not let this book be my only source, I almost went and expressed my disatisfaction with my doctor based on this book. I regret that after reading the book and before reading alternative reports I got into an argument with a neuropsychiatrist whose acquaintance I made in a sports club who challenged the views in the book when I mentioned them to her.
Fortunately I did not go and quarrel with my own doctor based on the book ( it scares me to think I almost did ) because I had the sanity to investigate the deficiency from alternative sources.

The major allegations by the authors about which there is approximately 50 % agreement and of course 50 % disagreement among medical experts throughout the whole world have to do with the method of diagnosis and treatment of vitamin B 12 deficiency.

The authors claim that a serum ( blood ) B 12 test for a deficiency is unreliable by itself and must be accompanied by urinary methyl malonic acid ( MMA ) and serum homocysteine tests. Because in some cases a vitamin B 12 deficiency may damage the nervous system many years before it shows up on blood tests. Doctors who rely on the vitamin B 12 blood test alone could miss a B 12 deficiency if it does not show up on the blood test. The authors allege very strongly that the best measure of B 12 deficiency is the urinary methyl malonic acid and creatinine ratio test done properly along with serum B 12 and serum homocysteine tests. In the medical literature I researched there is strong support for this view. But there are also equally strong arguments in favor of the alternative view, claiming that on the contrary urinary MMA test results are not a reliable indicator of vitamin B 12 deficiency and that serum B 12 tests are more reliable. This is exactly the opposite of what the authors of the book claim. The book mentions that there are doctors that claim this. And it claims that these doctors are ignorant. However, in the reports the doctors state the reasons why urinary or blood MMA tests are unreliable and explain the results of scientific studies in support of their view. They are by no means ignorant.

The other major disagreement is about the method of treatment. The authors of the book claim that Vitamin B 12 oral tablets even in high doses are very often ineffective in treatment of the deficiency and insist that pain free injections directly into the blood is indispensible as a treatment method. They claim that nobody should lose time and risk ineffective treatment with oral tablets. In some cases this maybe true for swallowed oral tablets which have to cross the digestive system. However, I came across many different reports on the internet that mention the effectiveness of sublingual ( under the tounge ) oral vitamin B 12 pills that are also absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Especially during the recent several years many independent studies throughout the world indicate that sublingual vitamin B 12 pills have been found to be as effective as injections into the blood, making the injections unnecessary in many cases. After discrediting the oral tablets and strongly promoting the injections throughout their book even the authors back off from their claims on page 153 under the heading : " A Final Word about Oral B 12 " where they admit the promising recent studies about the efficacy of oral tablets administered sublingually. After I took 1000 mg of swallowable oral tablets for four months my serum B 12 level shot through the roof rising from far below the lower limit to more than twice the upper limit ! My doctor told me to discontinue swallowing the pills.

So, read the book and read any serious other sources you can find on the internet and then decide with your doctor about how you will proceed to diagnose and treat your or your loved one(s)' vitamin B 12 deficiency. Just don't take everything the book or the reports say for granted. Make your own analysis and draw your own conclusions based on a varied rich source of reliable information about this subject. Good luck !

Editorial Review:

In Could It Be B12?, RN Sally M. Pacholok and her physician husband, Jeffrey J. Stuart, cite the extensive research done by numerous medical centers and universities that proves B12 deficiency plays a defining role in many seemingly hopeless problems.
Yet, even in the face of these studies, this disorder has somehow been overlooked by the general medical field and is often misdiagnosed.
The authors include numerous case histories and offer their readers strategies on how to learn if they or a loved one may be suffering from a B12 deficiency.

I thought the older books were easier to look up different vitamins and what your body needs for certain ailments.I didn't like the way he listed contents in front of book, some things were hard to find when looking in contents.

perfect info guide 5 out of 5 stars.

I saw an older version of this book and wanted one immediately. This book is great for short quick facts, is easy to read, and is interesting. I recommend this book for passing the time in small intervals, and for having on hand to look things up. You will not become a doctor from reading this book, but it gives interesting facts about a lot of everyday substances.

Good Reference Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Amongst many things I am a health nut. I have a large selection of "reference books" that I use to study from. I have had this book for uite sometime and I like it but it has a few flaws. One being the information on certain vitamins is not as long as I would have liked some are even as short as one paragraph. Other than that is a good go to book.

Got this for my wife to replace/update her original. She uses it daily and said it does have considerable updates since the 1999 version.

This book is still the best one out there.... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

Good Supplement Information 4 out of 5 stars.

This book covers uses for various supplements that are not always covered by other vitamin books.
The information is very helpful, but a few things are a little out of date, mostly because of what was or wasn't available when the book was written.
Overall, a good addition to your nutrition library if you're interested in using supplements or knowing more about what certain nutrients do.

There are better medically validated detox programs out there... 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is for pre-clears. They don't exist, neither do clears.

Find one, I can tell you now that anyone who claims they have reached clear still get the occasional headache, still are affected by the flue, environmental factors are fibbing, and have zero physical evidence to the contrary. Evidence is crucial, not testimonials that may very well be biased after reading such an interestingly written book - Hubbard is a science-fiction writer. Contrary to popular belief; is not qualified to be a doctor as you can see a court hearing on youtube of his son speaking out about that fabrication - and the many others he created.

I've read the book, I've also read many others of Hubbard's and none of them have any scientific validation, no proper testing, no double blind testing - nothing, find some, just try. This book as I read it was nothing more than a rope in to join the Scientology religion. If you want lots of information visit xenu.net you can get allot of insight there on what these books really are about.

PS, there are allot better medically validated detox programs out there.

Editorial Review:

Find out about the only effective program that eliminates the devastating effects of drugs and toxins. Hundreds of thousands have done this program and live happier, more perceptive and aware lives as a result.

The Calcium Factor Is A Must For Every Home 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was very impressed with Robert Barefoot's scientific background, research and conviction to saving Americans as well as the world from themselves and big Pharma. I have applied this information to my own life with astonishing results. Just a few short months ago I thought I was on a doomed path to lifelong chronic disease or early death. After a trip to the ER and follow-ups with my doctors I suggested that perphaps I could have a nutritional deficiency or maybe chronic dehydration was a problem as I knew myself I had not been drinking enough water. This was dismissed by the medical community as nonsense without any testing to prove otherwise. I was told on top of all my other problems, I now had fibromyalgia and was told that there is no cure but we can control it with several prescription drugs (for the rest of my life). Observing the way my doctors were so willing to dismiss nutrition sent me running, and this was before I embarked on a natural, nutritional path. My own commense sense raise serious red flags. I left there and headed for the Internet to research anything I could find on each one of my symptoms, one-by-one. I started a journal with a section devoted to each symptom and researched every known deficiency that would cause that one symptoms instead of looking at all my symptoms as a whole. When I broke down my research in this manner, I suddenly started coming up with 3 main culprits that kept reappearing with each symptom: Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium as well as water and oxgyen. This led me to Robert Barefoot's book, The Calcium Factor, which I eagerly purchased and read within hours of its arrival. It made the most sense of anything I had read or been told to date. Ironically, about the same time I got this book, a friend told me about her experiences and frustrations with her doctor and how she turned she skeptically turned to a procedure called "BioMeridian Feedback" and how it turned her life around. I then found a BioMeridan Feedback Specialist in my area and quickly made an appointment, thinking I had nothing to lose by trying. I was very skeptical so didn't tell the therapist any of my ailments, only that I had heard of this and wanted to check it out. What happened next blew me away. She told me exactly the symptoms I had been experiencing and told me I had a deficiency in Calcium and Potassium. This therapist also informed me that my most serious problem that needed addressing first was acid. This backed up what I had read in this book so I embarked on a regimen of ionic minerals and ionic coral calium. Within days my health and my life began to turn around. Symptoms were disappearing rapidly, my mental acuity sharply increased and I had an incredible surge in energy. I needlessly suffered for over 10 years from symptoms that left me debilitated with pain, fatigue and brain fog, all the while being treated by numerous medical doctors who not once addressed nutrition. A few years back I asked one of my doctors if I could ever hope to be pain free. His reply was, "if you ever wake up and find that you no longer have any pain to be immedialely suspicious that you are dead". No hope was offered by my doctors and apparently a positive mental attitude was not important to them either as this one statement sent me into a state of depression that lasted for years. So as far as I am concerned Robert Barefoot and the others who work tirelessly to bring to light the importance of giving our bodies what GOD put here for us and what we were built to run on should be praised for they are truly Angels. I have since bought several copies of this book for family members and friends. As far as some of the comments about Barefoot's literary skills, I say who gives a s---. I'm not interested in glossy words or propaganda, I can get that from the doctors, I want real evidence and real answers to real problems and that is what Barefoot delivers.
