Editorial Review:

Since the explosion of the Internet and other forms of digital technology, the number of people addicted to pornography has skyrocketed. But there has been a distinct lack of resources to help them until now. The Porn Trap is the first book to take a comprehensive look at porn addiction and other devastating consequences of porn use, addressing the full range of problems that impact everyone from recreational "dabblers" to compulsive addicts, and the people who care about them.

In this groundbreaking book, sex and relationship therapists Wendy and Larry Maltz take on this important subject with wisdom, authority, and compassion. They shed new light on the power of pornography—revealing why it's so easy to develop a serious problem with porn and often hard to break free from its clutches. Without judgment or blame, the Maltzes outline the destructive effects of porn use, and offer a commonsense, practical approach for healing supported by innovative exercises, checklists, and suggestions.

The Porn Trap will help you to:

  • Identify and evaluate the impact of porn
  • Decide whether it's time to quit using porn
  • Learn how to stop using porn and deal with cravings
  • Rebuild self-esteem and restore personal integrity
  • Heal a relationship harmed by porn use, and
  • Develop a thriving and satisfying sexual life without porn

Throughout the book are powerful real-life stories from everyday people from all walks of life who have struggled with porn and gotten out from under its influence. Their experiences show that no matter how bad things may seem, it is possible to change and eventually triumph over this increasingly common problem.

With The Porn Trap, Wendy and Larry Maltz provide a unique blend of help, hope, and healing for all who want to move away from porn, improve their lives, and create genuine intimacy with a partner.

I can quit reading this book any time I want 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For such a small book, it has a whole lot of insight into how addicts fool themselves into staying in their destructive patterns. I think this book would be useful both for the recovering addict (myself included) as well as family members who are struggling to understand and support recovery efforts. Dr. Twerski writes in a very clear, direct manner, and I find myself wishing the chapters were longer so I could learn even more. He tells of several of his experiences with patients which really help to drive his point home. If you are an addict or know of somebody struggling with addiction, I think this book can help you notice which behaviors should change.

Absolute must-have for anyone interested in addictions 5 out of 5 stars.

I was assigned this book for my Biopsychosocial aspects of addictions course in grad school for counseling. This is definitely a book I will not be selling back. It is extremely reader-friendly and offers great insight into the way addicts think. Twerski does a fabulous job of explaining addictive behavior and cognitive processes as well as explaining codependency. Whether you're in school and studying addictions, just curious about the topic, or have an addict in your life, I strongly recommend reading this book.

Editorial Review:

using vivid examples and case studies, the author exposes the irrational and contradictory patterns of addictive thinking, and shows how to overcome them and the barriers they create; low self-esteem and relapse.

The last writer is on a Jesus soap box. This book and AA meetings have made a better person, a more loving person and a better Christen out of me. All recovery depends on a decision to trust God, make amends for past sins, and live a clean and sober life. Most people may want to stop abusing but cannot or will not change the way they think and live. I believe Jesus delivered me but someone else may think Buddha helped them. I tried the way of religion and the way of no religion and still was miserable. This book guided me to a new spiritual life that no church or religion could do.

Hope for Those Wanting to be a Normal Eating 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in the process of overcoming a long term eating disorder. Having been both anorexic and overweight, this book has offered me hope in teaching me to read my bodie's clues and to begin to trust them. I appreciate that while the author is honest in saying that becoming a normal eater requires hard work, she also impart's hope to both those who have totally learned to ignore their body's clues that they are full and those who have have learned to ignore physcial hunger and have lived under the tyranny of food diaries and counting calories and fat grams.

Editorial Review:

Written in easy-to-understand, everyday language, The Rules of “Normal” Eating lays out the four basic rules that "normal" eaters follow instinctively — eating when they're hungry, choosing foods that satisfy them, eating with awareness and enjoyment, and stopping when they're full or satisfied. Along with specific skills and techniques that help promote change, the book presents a proven cognitive-behavioral model of transformation that targets beliefs, feelings, and behaviors about food and eating and points the way toward genuine physical and emotional fulfillment. Readers learn how to reprogram their dysfunctional beliefs, manage uncomfortable feelings without turning to food, and establish new eating habits that tune their bodies into natural sensations of hunger, pleasure, satisfaction, and satiation. Filled with humorous insights, compassion, and practical wisdom, the book outlines balanced attitudes and patterns that benefit all types of eaters.

This book does an excellent job explaining what boundaries are and why they are so important. The book gives many real world examples showing what happens if a person has too close or too distant boundaries. The author writes in a fresh and clear voice. Recommended by a counselor, the book was helpful and informative.

Must Read If You Struggle With Addiction 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As someone who struggles with Alcohol addiction I gained valuable insights from this book. As it should, the book addresses addiction in the context of a whole personality/pattern of addiction, not simply addiction to one particular substance such as alcohol. A must read if you struggle with addiction.

This book 5 out of 5 stars.

Really helpful to understand one's addictive tendencies, what drives us toward and how to avoid self-destructive acts

A Window into the Heart and Mind of Today's Individuals 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In this day and age of quick fixes and appearance over character, addictions are becoming more and more widespread. The author here describes the process of addiction, including addictive relationships. He then breaks down the addictive process into three stages: internal change, lifestyle change, and life breakdown. Following the addictive process, he shares the motivations for recovery. He closes the book by addressing addiction as it relates to families.

This work will apply to any addiction -- it is not restricted to just one variety. I recommend it for all Christian workers, particularly pastors. It will give a greater glimpse into the emotional struggles of the people all around a pastor, as well as a much-needed window into his own heart and mind.

Editorial Review:

graig nakken presents the most recent information on how an individual becomes an addict-including cultural influences and genetic factors-as he examines addiction's causes, stages of development, and consequences.

Personal stories reveal how desperate life can become for online sex addicts--divorce, career loss, and financial ruin are common outcomes. Misquotes Scripture / Dismisses Psychiatry 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Early in his book, Dr. Welch inaccurately quotes Scripture, rendering 2 Peter 1:3 to say that Scripture gives us all the tools/information/etc. that we need in order to live. Of course, 2 Peter 1:3 says this not about Scripture, but about God.
I approached this book as one schooled in and accepting of Reformed theology. Certainly Dr. Welch does not stray far from the Gospel. But he is dismissive of anything but a proof-text approach to reading Scripture that suggests that any problems a person may have are "worship deficiencies."
This may be true, in a strict sense. If we are really attuned to God's will, we certainly won't face addiction problems. But a more realistic subtitle for the book ought to have been "Here but for the grace of God go I."
Dr. Welch makes several astounding claims in order to advance his model of addiction theory. One of these is that there is no real evidence to suggest that physical withdrawal symptoms can literally overpower a person. Another is that gambling and sex do not prompt any internal physiological response. Any responsible neuroscientist would scoff at this -- our brains are full of chemical charges that dramatically affect our ability to think rationally, and our attitude toward God and other men.
Dr. Welch offers little in the way of practical help for the recovering addict; in fact, one of the reasons he is critical of AA is that AA has become palatable to non-believers. Heaven forbid it!
Dr. Welch advances a model-driven approach that fails to understand the enormity of God's revealed wisdom and how we ought to apply it when struggling with addiction issues or helping a loved one in need.
This book is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Read it critically. I understand I am the first negative reviewer, but my fear is that people get swept away by what they perceive to be a "gospel message" that is in fact little but a model for laying more guilt at the feet of an addict.
Finally, Dr. Welch gives short shrift to the work of the Holy Spirit in even the lives of addicts, and pretends that people suffering in the grip of addiction are far removed from grace. He also makes the decidedly un-Scriptural claim that, if we pray for God to remove any temptation/sin/etc. from our lives, then God will grant that request. But Paul's struggle with the thorn in his flesh stands in direct opposition to this claim.
Jesus Christ's love for addicts goes far beyond what Dr. Welch contemplates in this disappointing book.

Editorial Review:

A worship disorder: this is how Edward T. Welch views addictions. "Will we worship our own desires or will we worship the true God?" With this lens the author discovers far more in Scripture on addictions than passages on drunkenness. There we learn the addict's true condition: like guests at a banquet thrown by "the woman Folly," he is already in the grave (Proverbs 9:13-18). Can we not escape our addictions? If we're willing to follow Jesus, the author says that we have "immense hope: hope in God's forgiving grace, hope in God's love that is faithful even when we are not, and hope that God can give power so that we are no longer mastered by the addiction." Each chapter concludes with "Practical Theology," "As Your Face Your Own Addictions," and "As You Help Someone Else."

Helpful perhaps to religious people 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Karen Casey has overcome some adversities in her life and she claims these are the 12 principles she has disccovered or, as she freely admits, rediscovered.

The problem I have with the book is that it is, in many ways, a non-denominational religious tract. While I don't hold religious people in disdain, I myself am not religious. Thus the endless references to literally putting yourself in the hands of a "Higher Power" and allowing your life to be guided by said power don't do anything for me. Her core advice is sufficient: the invitation to simply "have faith" I think will actually harm some people who will come to believe that they merely need to believe that they will somehow be guided to make the right decisions, rather than invest the will and energy to change their own lives.

I think Karen Casey does well at putting her message forth and that many people, especially those with religious beliefs, will find comfort, solace and encouragement in her words, even if I do not.

Jerry

Editorial Review:

"There is never anything to change but our own perspective." Karen Casey

Thirty years ago best-selling author Karen Casey (Each Day a New Beginning) wandered into a support group and learned there was only one thing she could change--herself! She found a group of people who had adopted this concept--and she joined them. The result? Change so profound Casey has dedicated much of her life to teaching others about it.

Change Your Mind and Your Life Will Follow offers a dozen simple principles to live by. Each principle makes up a chapter. Each chapter includes meditation-style essays to help readers access peaceful, life-changing responses to just about any situation. It really is as simple as changing our minds. This little book will show you how.
