Editorial Review:

Aimee Liu's memoir Solitaire, America's first first- person account of a young woman's battle with anorexia, was published in 1979. At the time, she thought her battle was over, but a relapse in 2000 prompted her to reinvestigate the subject. Now, three decades after her initial recovery, Liu shares her story and those of her peers who are still struggling to understand the role anorexia and bulimia have played in their lives. Combining personal interviews with cutting-edge research on the origins and course of eating disorders, Liu shatters many commonly held notions about these diseases. Societal pressure, popular culture, and family dysfunction cannot "make" one anorexic; it takes a particular genetic predisposition and temperament. Readers will learn who is susceptible to eating disorders and why, how these diseases can waste sufferers' lives in ways that have nothing to do with food or weight, and why recovery requires more than good nutrition. Both instructive and emotionally powerful, Liu's narrative is destined to be a classic in the field of eating disorders.

Nobody teaches this stuff. Read it! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Excellent. A bit dated but timeless content. The beginning and end speaks to AA type meetings but it's not the main focus of the book, co-dependency is, which just about everyone deals with growing up. Quick read. There are a few short stories featuring animals that are sprinkled between the chapters, adding levity and a moment to escape and explore how the new information may serve you. My favorite, The Goose, whose parents told her not to leave the pond despite her feeling sick but she finally did leave and discovered she was right. The family unit unknowingly puts family members into positions and then keeps them there unable to see the dysfunction. Once one family member took action leaving the others behind the others eventually followed. If one family member is acting out and you don't know why it is not always the issue of the one who is acting out, look beyond, look to yourself first. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

It is estimated that as many as 34 million people grew up in alcoholic homes but what about the rest of us? The authors provide a readable explanation of what happens to those of us who have had no alcoholism, but did have perfectionism, workaholism, compulsive overeating, intimacy problems, etc.

Very Informative Book 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Of the books I've read about eating disorders, this is probably the most informative one regarding explanations of what eating disorders are. This is an excellent resource for anyone with a young child or teenager with an eating disorder. I did find their advice about leaving your job to stay home with your child or going to their school to eat with them to be a bit impractical, but overall think the book is a valuable resource.

Editorial Review:

Always harmful and potentially deadly, eating disorders can wreak havoc on families. Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

Make Your State of Mind More Important Than What You Are Doing 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Or, are you allowing your ego to get in your way of being connected?

A great passage in this book is:

"After the great rains, the lion was faced with crossing the river that had encircled him. Swimming was not in his nature, but it was either cross or die. The lion roared and charged the river, almost drowning before he retreated. Many more times he attacked the water, and each time he failed to cross. Exhausted, the lion lay down, and in his quietness he heard the river say, 'Never fight what isn't here.'

Cautiously, the lion looked up and asked, 'What isn't here?'

'Your enemy isn't here,' answered the river. 'Just as you are a lion, I am merely a river.'

Now the lion sat very still and studied the ways of the river. After a while, he walked to where a certain current brushed against the shore, and stepping in, floated to the other side."

Some of my most favorite quotes from this book are:

1. "We only need to be as we were created -- effortless, present, and free."

2. "Guilty and remorseful thoughts do not help, heal, or comfort the person you think you have hurt. In effect, you are simply making the same mistake all over again; you attacked this person; now you are attacking yourself. Attack is the problem, not the answer."

3. "What do I believe that makes these circumstances important enough to be upset?"

4. "If I imagine this situation deteriorating or this person's behavior getting worse, what specifically do I see happening to me?"

5. "Some things are simple, and here's one of them: You can either relax and let go of your life, in which case you will know peace. Or you can try to control your life, in which case you will know war."

6. "Awareness, more than any other factor, is the key to cleansing your mind and making it whole."

7. "True communication is remembering that everything is relationship --- that, regardless of the appearance, no one stands alone."

8. "I see what I decide and react as I choose."

9. "As someone said to me recently, 'The next time you think there is some situation you can control, try doing it when you have diarrhea.'"

I chose this book because being fully in the present moment, no matter my history or lack thereof with my interlocutor, gives me choice.

As I read this book, I was happy to have found many places where I agreed with Hugh Prather, and some places where I wrote in the margins that I disagree.

One part of this book that was of particular interest to me was the exercise that Prather takes readers through in how to be socially involved with difficult people (breath your way into responding to who you are, in the presence of who that 'difficult' person is).

This is a book that I didn't want to put on the book shelf, amongst the books that I've read, because I felt compelled to look back through many pages, where I've highlighted things that I will apply in my life.

Editorial Review:

"Letting go is the bottom-line key to happiness," states Hugh Prather. And in The Little Book of Letting Go, he offers a simple three-step process for shedding prejudices, preconceptions, and prejudgments and facing each moment with openness and enthusiasm. Prather first explains why it is essential to learn to let go and then outlines a 30-day plan for spiritual renewal. Finally, he offers specific techniques for getting a grip on habitual reactions, the need to control, and the addiction to conflict.

you win with this one! 5 out of 5 stars.
51 of 51 people found this review helpful.

for those of us who have a drinking or sober alcoholic in our past or present (and god, don't most of us!), this book can help. it's beautifully yet simply written and gently lays out a new philosophy for life, one in which we can learn to keep the focus on ourselves and our behavior, be honest but in an appropriate way, and be kind but firm - with boundaries. this book offered me a whole new idea of what love and life are and can be, and encouraged me to walk forward in a healthy direction like few books have.

another strong plus is that it offers many personal stories - of how and why a wide range of people got into al-anon and how their recovery has been progressing, and each told by the individuals themselves, starting with Lois W., al-anon's co-founder, the wife of Bill W., the founder of AA.

this is a wonderful book and i recommend it highly!

How Alanon Works For Families and Friends of Alcoholics 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful basic text on the principles of the Alanon program, a program of recovery for anyone who has an addict in their lives. It explains how addiction warps those close to the addict, the behaviors that ensue and finally healthier behavior. It's provides a way out of the prison that's constructed when a family or friend faces the frustration of living with and loving an alcoholic/addict. Buy this book for YOU if you're in this situation..and stop the madness.

Growing Up Irish in Post-War Brooklyn 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pete Hamill"s deeply introspective memoir of his coming of age during the late 40's and 50's in working class Brooklyn is a brutally honest account of how alcohol gets integrated into certain rights of passage as people , especially men navigate the transition to adulthood.

His story could be anyone's, except that Hamill writes in a gripping personal style that infuses each episode in his young life with a sense of urgency. The struggle to reconcile with a distant father never deteriorates into a sense of victimhood. I admired the fact that Hamill is able to describe his youthful feelings of anger toward his father without wallowing in them and always with a sense of someone seeking to understand and forgive.

This is a great book on several levels. Hamill captures a sense of the old neighborhoods of New York that have vanished and the strong influence that a sense of place had on young people of his generation when the world was quite a bit smaller.

Editorial Review:

An acclaimed author offers an honest self-portrait of coming of age in a culture that considers drinking an essential part of becoming a man and reveals how it nearly destroyed his ability to write. Reprint. 60,000 first printing. Tour. NYT.

who threw a tantrum because this book included Christian principles and therefore gave it only one star. It's very easy to read and makes VERY CLEAR points. You can not read this book and fail to understand codependency (which most of us suffer to some small degree) and the solutions. If you don't agree with a few small points, don't whine and just skip them. Excellent, excellent book.

Love Is A Choice 4 out of 5 stars.

No matter where you are in your walk in life, no matter what your relationships with others is like, you will derive value in reading this book. A few pages may be challenging, but don't stop reading. The book is a good foundation for starting, repairing or building relationships at home, at work or wherever you interact with people. It is introspective, uplifing and perfect for a quiet weekend alone.

Editorial Review:

Love Is a Choice Workbook provides a ten-stage plan to help you find healing from the pain that created your codependency and then guides you through the plan using interactive questions, self-tests, exercises, and journaling.
