what a fraud 1 out of 5 stars.

I am not a recovering drug addict or alcoholic, a rehab industry professional or anybody who would know if this was true or fiction and I bought the book and read it from cover to cover in a matter of days. After reading the book I picked up my friend Leonard and realized that much of what he had written in his first book was false. My sympathy for this man and his supposed ordeal quickly changed to disgust! Don't buy this book and put another penny into this mans pocket!

Editorial Review:

“The most lacerating tale of drug addiction since William S. Burroughs’ Junky.” —The Boston Globe

“Again and again, the book delivers recollections that leave the reader winded and unsteady. James Frey’s staggering recovery memoir could well be seen as the final word on the topic.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“A brutal, beautifully written memoir.”—The Denver Post

“Gripping . . . A great story . . . You can’t help but cheer his victory.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Not Impressed 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I read this book in college for a children's lit class. I was not impressed. It is a melodramatic look at the evils of drugs. It reads like a bad after school special, created to frighten teenagers and warn them never to experiment with drugs of any kind. Also, despite the lore following this novel, it was not written by a teenager. Read the novel if must, but there are definitely better books out there about drug usage.

Semi Compelling... 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was kind of interesting. It is NOT written by a teenager. The story is about a girls struggle with drug addiction and personal identity. The things that give away this not so anonymous book is the content. There are several "big" words that are used by te author to suggest that this isnt written by a 14 year old addict. Throughout the story, the narrator spends her time raving about the drugs she uses but spends a little amount of time talking about boys and other "normal" teenage expierecnes. Before the story even starts, there is a note that says this book is fictional and all characters are made up. And the characters name isnt even Alice, Alice is simply a girl who is mentioned once in the book. "Go Ask Alice" is the title of a song sung by Jefferson Airplane. This book was also written during the during the 70s drug hype. This story can be a propaganda book to simply keep teenagers away from drugs. And if all this was real, the people the events and such, why hasnt anyone come through and said anything about this girl or anyone else in the story? Just makes you wonder...
So I recommed that you get this book from a library or a friend because it isnt really worth purchasing.

Editorial Review:

My Dream Life

Deep down inside I knew that by virtue of the life I had been leading, jail was inevitable and a debt long overdue. But the most disheartening part of this ordeal occurred as the police led me into Central Booking. I had a clear view of the nearby skate park called the Brooklyn Banks, a famous skate spot that I had been shredding since I was eight years old. I could almost see a young version of myself, laughing with my friends, learning new tricks, skating under the warm evening sun.

"As a skateboarder, I was fixated on testing my boundaries, but this was my way of fooling myself into feeling in control. Soon it grew to consume me."

At only twenty-two, Brandon Novak had accomplished more than most people dream of in a lifetime. By the age of fourteen, he had been discovered by legendary skateboarders Tony Hawk and Bucky Lasek, and signed on to skate professionally. By eighteen, he had traveled the world, signed autographs for thousands of fans, won big-time sponsorships, and had his photo plastered all over the skate magazines.

"I was a dreamseller. I sold those who loved me their dream that I was a recovering addict. I gained their trust, and betrayed them in order to get my precious next fix."

Yet as swiftly as his career peaked, it crashed, brought down by heroine, a force far more powerful than his greatest ambitions. One day he had it all, the next he was living in an abandoned garage, begging for spare change on the street and bathing in gas station restrooms. Brandon now lived for one thing only his next fix.

"Where once I had the world in my hand, I now had nothing but a distorted, twisted version of what I had once been."

Brandon probably would have died a junkie's death if not for his closest friend, MTV and Jackass star, and music video director Bam Margera, who refused to give up on the dreamseller. Bam invited Brandon into his home and gave him cameos in the CKY videos, his independent films Haggard and Minghags, his hit MTV shows Viva La Bam and Bam's Unholy Union, and the hit films Jackass Number Two and Jackass 2.5. Eventually, Bam convinced Brandon to write the powerful and shocking story of how his addiction destroyed his skateboarding career a story soon to be a major motion picture starring Bam Margera as Brandon Novak, the Dreamseller.

Vivid, harrowing and heartfelt, Brandon s story is a riveting and unforgettable journey from a dream life to a nightmare existence, and ultimately to waking up before it's too late.

Simply the best! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As I read this book, I was so captivated and distraught at times. It touched me to the core and made me cherish and value life more. This is the last book of the trilogy by David Pelzer and the ending couldn't have been more befitting. How a beautiful family is destroyed due to the alcoholism of the parents stands at the core of this really brutal tale. If it was a work of fiction, one might just dismiss it, but the fact that a mother could be so brutal to her son, is just so very incomprehensible! The fact that the tragic life of Dave ends in triumph gives immense satisfaction to me as a reader. It's simply amazing how he survives through sheer determination and immense will power and eventually triumphs.
The most poignant lesson here is the human ability to forgive. And Dave does forgive his mom in the end, thereby making him a `real' man. His challenges in life did not leave him bitter and resentful, in fact they compelled him on a greater course in life whereby he helped millions of kids who have suffered like him.

Enlightening 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Carnes does a great job of not only showing how destructive sexual addiction can be, but also how slippery the slope is so that the addict can easily fall into the illegal and extremely shameful without realization or intent.
Along with this dire warning, he also offers hope and shows that while admitting the problem may be humiliating, refusing to admit that the problem is there can easily lead to absolute devastation.

Excellent insight into sexual addiction 5 out of 5 stars.

As I am currently in the process of divorcing a sex addict, this book was very insightful for me. It is still very painful to accept, but at least the book sheds insight into how and why this happens.

This book was very informative and very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book has some good information in it. It forces you to take a hard look at yourself as a victim or co-dependant to the addict.

Editorial Review:

This breakthrough work, the first to describe sexual addiction, is still the standard for recognizing and overcoming this destructive behavior. With insight and sensitivity, Dr. Patrick Carnes outlines how to identify a sexual addict, recognize the way others may unwittingly become complicit or codependent, and change the patterns that support the addiction.

Editorial Review:

Since the initial publication of this breakthrough work, motivational interviewing (MI) has been used by countless clinicians. Theory and methods have evolved apace, reflecting new knowledge on the process of behavior change, a growing body of outcome research, and the development of new applications within and beyond the addictions field. Extensively rewritten, this revised and expanded second edition now brings MI practitioners and trainees fully up to date. William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick explain how to work through ambivalence to facilitate change, present detailed guidelines for using their approach, and reflect on the process of learning MI. Chapters contributed by other leading experts then address such special topics as MI and the stages-of-change model, applications in medical, public health, and criminal justice settings, and using the approach with groups, couples, and adolescents.

This review refers to the Summary.... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I noticed that the lower reviews came from persons who felt that the book didn't cover specifics on what to do to loose the weight. What I felt the author is offering is the "tool" to help you recognize WHY you're overweight and the steps you can take to correct the WHY, which is emotional eating. Now everyone's emotional reasons are different, hence it would be a very lengthy book to read, and it would be too general if "tools" where given. When reading the summary version of this book I was shaking my head in amazed agreement of how relevant and on-point the book was for me. I agreed with the material presented and recognized that if put into practice, I can begin to turn my current situation around emotionally, physically and spiritually. When I purchase the book I will come back to amend my rating.

Editorial Review:

Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. Now Dr. Roger Gould, a psychotherapist and a leading authority on emotional eating, shows how to overcome fear, anxiety, and other stresses and stop using food as an over-the-counter tranquilizer that can cause weight gain. With 12 practical ways to stop emotional eating and an eight-session program, Dr. Gould helps you become your own eating therapist and shrink yourself for good.
