If you're a Christian in Recovery, this is a must have 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

So many times my sponsees ask me for more thorough guidedance in working the twelve steps from a Chirstian perspective. This is where I tell them to look. Religion and the 12 steps are not in conflict, and this book will show you how to deepen your recovery, work your steps and get closer to God. What more could you possibly ask for?

The Twelve Steps for Christians JOURNAL 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A necessary resource for leading "The Twelve Steps for Christians" book study meeting. This Journal provides questions for encouraging the group to share their experience, strength, and hope regarding the pages read in the book. It would be "nice" if all attending a study meeting were to have a journal, but it is not necessary. Depends on your personal preference.

Editorial Review:

"We use The Twelve Steps--A Spiritual Journey as a vehicle to move our people down the road to further discipleship and fellowship. When used in the group experience, it promotes unity and molds people together into the family of God".---Ron & Karen Martin, Founders & Directors, Liontamers Anonymous.

A great book for sexually addictive couples! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

When a couple enters therapy and one partner exhibits sexually addictive behaviors, the non-addicted partner (co-addict) often asks me to "Fix my partner!"

With all couples, however, I emphasize shared responsibility. When one partner has an addiction, they are an addicted couple. When the woman is pregnant, they are pregnant. When one has an affair, both share the burden of how to resolve it.

I had the privilege of writing a chapter for this book called, "Straight Guise: Is My Partner Gay?" I hope my chapter will illustrated for couples that just because a male partner engages in sexual acts with another man does not mean he is gay nor bisexual. It also does not mean that the marriage has to be over even if he is, in fact, gay. This chapter outlines all things to consider before rushing into doing anything.

More on my work with straight men who have sex with men at www.straightguise.com

I hope this book does what it is intended to do and that is help the coaddict and the couple.

Editorial Review:

Where do I go from here? You are not alone. Thousands of unsuspecting people wake up every day to discover their loved one, the one person that they are supposed to trust completely, has been living a life of lies and deceit because they suffer from a disease - a disease called sex addiction. Stefanie Carnes brings together several authors to guide the reader through an assortment of topics like, How Do I Handle This? and, What Do I Tell the Kids?

Editorial Review:

The first in a series of three recovery guides for the first three years of sobriety, First-Year Sobriety uses the voices of many women and men who are struggling in the often baffling territory of their first year of sobriety to show that despite their differing experiences, all are united in the process of giving life without alcohol or other drugs a chance.

These are people who are alternately amazed, appalled, delighted, depressed, illuminated, disturbed, or simply thrown by their first days, weeks, and months of sobriety. Kettelhack explores the challenges all seem to face: learning to break through loneliness, isolation, and fear; finding ways to deal with anger, depression, and resentment; and learning how to deal with a new and sometimes overwhelming happiness.

Guy Kettelhack has written seven books on recovery. He is completing a Master's degree in psychoanalysis, and is an analyst-in-training at the Boston and New York Centers for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. A graduate of Middlebury College, Kettelhack has also done graduate work in English literature at Bread Loaf School of English at Oxford University. He lives in New York City.

Why I Eat The Way I DO.....(New Thoughts) 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am not known for my reading abilities but this was an "easy" read!
Sometimes, Geneen seemed to go into a lot of "personal" stories that might seem like she was losing tract of the purpose of her book. I was often able to see the reason behind it as she was trying to drive a point across by relating her stories (and others') so that the reader can see the relationship between food and love. Overall, I think there were some very good points that she brought out that I never would have seen or thought of had it not been for this book.

Unbelievably Insightful!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow,wow, wow. I purchased this book because it was suggested to me from a friend about a year ago I finally bought it and I am so glad I did. I am a very skeptical person when it comes to self help books, but I have to say this wasn't a self help book at all. Roth makes you truly examine yourself by sharing her story and then asking questions that make you think about why we do the things we do (eat). What feelings are we surpressing? THIS BOOK IS NOT A "HOW TO GUIDE" - it just tells her story and other people stories and I bet anyone could find a piece of themselves in this book. It was funny and light hearted, not drab and psychological. I loved it so much I couldn't put it down and I ended up ordering 2 more of her books - Breaking Free of Emotional & Compulsive Eating.

If nothing else, the book is a great read. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Recovering My Life 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have been in a 12 step program for 3 years. The God of my understanding has always been the God of the Bible. However, until I began my recovery journey with the Life Recovery Bible and the Life Recovery workbook, I did not truly understand how to benifit from experiences of the characters in the Bible and apply the 12 steps in my Christain journey. The Life Recovery Workbook uses both modern testimonials and stories from the bible characters to walk me through the steps, helps me ask and answer the hard questions and face the Truth about myself that is helping set me free from my addictions. As my faith grows and I continue to work through the steps in a biblical format, I am experiencing a peace and serenity like never before. Thank you Steven Arterburn and David Stoop for providing a tool that is heiping change my life!

Editorial Review:

As a complement to The Life Recovery Bible (more than 800,000 copies sold), The Life Recovery Workbook leads the recovering addict into reflection and practical application. By placing the 12 steps of recovery into a firm biblical context, the workbook brings scriptural principles into personal focus. Contemporary "Recovery Profiles," expanded descriptions of each of the 12 steps, and open-ended questions work in unison with The Life Recovery Bible. Far more than just teaching about the 12 steps, the workbook is a guide to an in-depth working of the steps, making the principles of recovery come alive for "one day at a time" living.

Editorial Review:

This invaluable work will contribute much to the battle against our number one disease."
--from the Foreword by George McGovern, former senator and author of Terry: My Daughter's Life-and-Death Struggle with Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a disease. It's time we started treating it like one.

Science has offered undisputed proof that alcoholism is a disease rather than a weakness of character, yet millions of alcoholics continue to suffer due to inappropriate treatment.  Now the co-author of the modern classic Under the Influence has teamed up with prominent alcoholism experts to provide new answers to this national epidemic.

Based on the latest scientific research, Beyond the Influence clearly explains the neurological nature of the disease and reveals why some people drink addictively and others do not.  It also spells out what needs to be done to treat alcoholism, including:
Steps to take for an intervention
How to find the right treatment program
Which psychological approaches work best
Why spirituality is essential to recovery
New insights into relapse prevention
What you should know about diet, exercise, and nontraditional treatments such as acupuncture
Provocative and eye-opening, compelling and compassionate, Beyond the Influence is not only a message of hope for alcoholics--it is a blueprint for saving lives.

BEYOND THE INFLUENCE explains that alcoholism is a disease of the body, not a weakness of character. Drawing on the latest scientific studies, the authors present new research on the central role of genetics and neurotransmitters in addiction. Continuing where the prior book left off, it also includes:

Steps for diagnosis and intervention, plus ways to prevent relapses
Various treatment models, including inpatient and out-patient programs and a review of new drug treatments
The most effective types of psychological counseling
The critical role of nutrition
Non-traditional healing methods for recovery
The importance of a spiritual component to recovery

The authors also critique our nation's alcoholism policies, including education and prevention programs, efforts to curtail college bingeing and underage drinking, and the advertising and marketing strategies of the alcohol industry. -->

Editorial Review:

Research indicates one out of 13 Americans suffers a drinking problem and four problem drinkers exist for every "hard core alcoholic". It is one of our country’s most significant health issues and a pervasive secret epidemic. Those affected are desperate for help but do not fit the alcoholic profile. So instead of seeking help, they suffer in silence.

In My Way Out, Jewell describes her history as a highly functional alcoholic and her decades of research in battling her addiction. Written in collaboration with Dr. Linda Garcia, MD, the search ultimately led her to develop a program calling upon experts in multiple fields.

Jewell’s therapy is based upon a 2002 double blind study published in The Lancet, a highly esteemed British medical journal, which reported results of a medication that ameliorated craving in drinkers. Having tried and failed a "simple pill" approach herself with another prescription drug, Jewell took it one step further, integrating a powerful self-hypnosis program, nutritional supplementation, and other essential elements, creating an incredibly effective, easy-to-follow system, the results of which have startled even the most conservative practitioners within the medical community.

In what may become the hottest recovery book to hit the market in years, My Way Out shows readers how their craving can be curbed immediately and easily in the privacy of their own homes; why a multi-faceted approach is extraordinarily more effective than a single-modality solution; that drinkers don’t need to attend AA if they’re not comfortable doing so; and that when appropriate, moderation (social drinking) is an acceptable strategy for problem drinkers if they are provided the proper tools and treatment.

Jewell broke all the rules when, as a lay person, she developed an effective program that finally offers hope to alcohol dependent individuals. And she did the same when writing My Way Out, a book that crosses genres as a self-help, autobiographical, research, and motivational read. Given the overwhelming success of those who underwent the program, she was surprised to learn that traditional book agents and reviewers wouldn’t touch it. But if the email pouring in to the publisher from early test subjects whose lives have been transformed by this extraordinary program is any example, there’s no question My Way Out will become a standard text on the shelves of people truly motivated for a life change, or of those who seek to help others affected by an addiction they have been powerless to control.

WHY ARE SEXUAL TEMPTATIONS SO HARD TO RESIST WHEN THE PRICE IS SO HIGH?

We all long for true intimacy. Many people seek to fill that void by seeking sexual relationships-whether real or fantasized-that promise to provide the relief, acceptance, and fulfillment for which they long. But it is false intimacy. And as Dr. Harry Schaumburg points out, "Sexual intimacy can't relieve their deep, unmet longings."

False Intimacy goes beyond behavioral symptoms and willpower-based solutions to provide biblical guideposts for the journey to restoration. With frank honesty, False Intimacy examines the roots behind these kinds of behaviors and offers realistic direction to those whose lives or ministries have been impacted by sexual addiction.

Healing emotional hunger one step at a time 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

Before the image of an OA meeting being filled with obese people fills your mind ... think again. An overeater can be anyone ... fashion model ... successful accountant in a size 8 ... fitness trainer ... midly plump dental assistant ... anyone. The causes and reasons are different. Overeating is not a lack of willpower but an emotional relationship to food that has someone not know when to stop. Eating is natural, overeating needs to be addressed so as to protect our very health. This wonderful "bible" for Overeaters Anonymous helps those in recovery work their healing one day at a time. Whether at a meeting, or in a personal inventory, or in working with a sponsor ... this contains elements of surrendering our will power to a higher power. Whether you believe in God or not, the notion of not having to do this alone is a welcome relief for many caught in a viscious circle of emotional medication through misuse of food. The concept of a higher power enables someone to be open to group support and feel the possibility of living a healthier way. This book is a program that is not a quick fix, a diet, or anykind of body makeover technique. What it provides is a way of thinking and living that addresses the root of using food as a drug.
