Editorial Review:

Research indicates one out of 13 Americans suffers a drinking problem and four problem drinkers exist for every "hard core alcoholic". It is one of our country’s most significant health issues and a pervasive secret epidemic. Those affected are desperate for help but do not fit the alcoholic profile. So instead of seeking help, they suffer in silence.

In My Way Out, Jewell describes her history as a highly functional alcoholic and her decades of research in battling her addiction. Written in collaboration with Dr. Linda Garcia, MD, the search ultimately led her to develop a program calling upon experts in multiple fields.

Jewell’s therapy is based upon a 2002 double blind study published in The Lancet, a highly esteemed British medical journal, which reported results of a medication that ameliorated craving in drinkers. Having tried and failed a "simple pill" approach herself with another prescription drug, Jewell took it one step further, integrating a powerful self-hypnosis program, nutritional supplementation, and other essential elements, creating an incredibly effective, easy-to-follow system, the results of which have startled even the most conservative practitioners within the medical community.

In what may become the hottest recovery book to hit the market in years, My Way Out shows readers how their craving can be curbed immediately and easily in the privacy of their own homes; why a multi-faceted approach is extraordinarily more effective than a single-modality solution; that drinkers don’t need to attend AA if they’re not comfortable doing so; and that when appropriate, moderation (social drinking) is an acceptable strategy for problem drinkers if they are provided the proper tools and treatment.

Jewell broke all the rules when, as a lay person, she developed an effective program that finally offers hope to alcohol dependent individuals. And she did the same when writing My Way Out, a book that crosses genres as a self-help, autobiographical, research, and motivational read. Given the overwhelming success of those who underwent the program, she was surprised to learn that traditional book agents and reviewers wouldn’t touch it. But if the email pouring in to the publisher from early test subjects whose lives have been transformed by this extraordinary program is any example, there’s no question My Way Out will become a standard text on the shelves of people truly motivated for a life change, or of those who seek to help others affected by an addiction they have been powerless to control.

Nobody teaches this stuff. Read it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent. A bit dated but timeless content. The beginning and end speaks to AA type meetings but it's not the main focus of the book, co-dependency is, which just about everyone deals with growing up. Quick read. There are a few short stories featuring animals that are sprinkled between the chapters, adding levity and a moment to escape and explore how the new information may serve you. My favorite, The Goose, whose parents told her not to leave the pond despite her feeling sick but she finally did leave and discovered she was right. The family unit unknowingly puts family members into positions and then keeps them there unable to see the dysfunction. Once one family member took action leaving the others behind the others eventually followed. If one family member is acting out and you don't know why it is not always the issue of the one who is acting out, look beyond, look to yourself first. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

It is estimated that as many as 34 million people grew up in alcoholic homes but what about the rest of us? The authors provide a readable explanation of what happens to those of us who have had no alcoholism, but did have perfectionism, workaholism, compulsive overeating, intimacy problems, etc.

Having had a dear friend who used this method after having tried AA, rehab numerous times, and everything else, let me tell you firsthand, the Sinclair Method works. The Cure for Addiction now means that one doesn't have to travel to Finland for treatment. One doesn't have to abandon life as they know it to endure 30 days of rehab or attend AA meetings; the Sinclair Method integrates into normal life and no one has to know you're on it if you choose to keep it private. The Sinclair Method gave my friend back his life, and all those love him, reason to proselytize it in any way possible.

Editorial Review:

Introducing a revolutionary solution to alcohol dependence, this study outlines the Sinclair Method, a treatment that combines the prescription medication Naltrexone and the continued consumption of alcohol. Already well known in many parts of Europe, this breakthrough remedy will bring relief to the millions who suffer from addiction or to those who are affected by someone else’s. Topics covered include the hard evidence behind the treatment, moving testimonials from cured alcoholics, interviews from clinics that have adopted the method, and details about Naltrexone.

Editorial Review:

This invaluable work will contribute much to the battle against our number one disease."
--from the Foreword by George McGovern, former senator and author of Terry: My Daughter's Life-and-Death Struggle with Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a disease. It's time we started treating it like one.

Science has offered undisputed proof that alcoholism is a disease rather than a weakness of character, yet millions of alcoholics continue to suffer due to inappropriate treatment. Now the co-author of the modern classic Under the Influence has teamed up with prominent alcoholism experts to provide new answers to this national epidemic.

Based on the latest scientific research, Beyond the Influence clearly explains the neurological nature of the disease and reveals why some people drink addictively and others do not. It also spells out what needs to be done to treat alcoholism, including:
Steps to take for an intervention
How to find the right treatment program
Which psychological approaches work best
Why spirituality is essential to recovery
New insights into relapse prevention
What you should know about diet, exercise, and nontraditional treatments such as acupuncture
Provocative and eye-opening, compelling and compassionate, Beyond the Influence is not only a message of hope for alcoholics--it is a blueprint for saving lives.

BEYOND THE INFLUENCE explains that alcoholism is a disease of the body, not a weakness of character. Drawing on the latest scientific studies, the authors present new research on the central role of genetics and neurotransmitters in addiction. Continuing where the prior book left off, it also includes:

Steps for diagnosis and intervention, plus ways to prevent relapses
Various treatment models, including inpatient and out-patient programs and a review of new drug treatments
The most effective types of psychological counseling
The critical role of nutrition
Non-traditional healing methods for recovery
The importance of a spiritual component to recovery

The authors also critique our nation's alcoholism policies, including education and prevention programs, efforts to curtail college bingeing and underage drinking, and the advertising and marketing strategies of the alcohol industry. -->

Finally answers the question: What is responsible drinking? 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

How many people actually know what a standard drink is? Or, how much alcohol is safe to consume? Or what acceptable drinking behavior is? Very few. In our neo-puritan, abstinence-only society, there are few guidelines for sensible, pleasurable indulgence.

Studies on abstinence-only sex education prove it a failure. Similarly, limited studies on abstinence-only treatment for drinking problems show it less effective than offering choice. Perhaps the message that one is "powerless over alcohol" undermines all efforts to exercise any form of reponsibility vis a vis drinking. It certainly provides a convenient excuse.

If you have questions about drinking, but don't want alarmist dogma; if you believe human beings are capable of making responsible choices; buy this book!

Good, not great. 3 out of 5 stars.

AA is not for everyone, despite what you may hear. If the 12-step cookie cutter approach leaves a bad aftertaste, this book may help.

It's true that one of the founders did drive drunk and kill someone. What one of the reviewers fails to mention is that it was after she had returned to A.A. and was practicing abstinence.

A.A. does work. For about 5 percent of those try it, (according to AA's own studies), but there are alternatives for those not sold on the Big Book.

Editorial Review:

"Quit drinking on your own terms," urges Jerry Dorsman, addictions counselor and an alcoholic in recovery for over 16 years. Those terms, carefully outlined in How to Quit Drinking Without AA, shift the treatment model away from disease toward holism. In this upbeat and clearly written guide, Dorsman neither moralizes nor locks the alcoholic in the perception of powerlessness. "A part of you remains nonalcoholic, no matter how much you drink," Dorsman counsels. This book aims at reaching the strength and integrity of the nonalcoholic self.

Offering a refreshing look at the problem, Dorsman emphasizes habit over disease. If drinking is a learned behavior, it can be unlearned. Each chapter contains worksheets designed to penetrate the alcoholic's denial and exercises to assess the problem. Five simply stated steps integrate psychological and physical realties. A chapter on healing details a regimen of healthy eating, physical exercise, and great activities to substitute for drinking. A chapter on renewal offers auxiliary therapies to drug and alcohol treatment such as acupuncture, massage, and tai chi. How To Quit Drinking Without AA will appeal to those who are ready to take charge of their recovery, seeing it as nothing less than the means to change one's life.

Growing Up Irish in Post-War Brooklyn 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pete Hamill"s deeply introspective memoir of his coming of age during the late 40's and 50's in working class Brooklyn is a brutally honest account of how alcohol gets integrated into certain rights of passage as people , especially men navigate the transition to adulthood.

His story could be anyone's, except that Hamill writes in a gripping personal style that infuses each episode in his young life with a sense of urgency. The struggle to reconcile with a distant father never deteriorates into a sense of victimhood. I admired the fact that Hamill is able to describe his youthful feelings of anger toward his father without wallowing in them and always with a sense of someone seeking to understand and forgive.

This is a great book on several levels. Hamill captures a sense of the old neighborhoods of New York that have vanished and the strong influence that a sense of place had on young people of his generation when the world was quite a bit smaller.

Editorial Review:

An acclaimed author offers an honest self-portrait of coming of age in a culture that considers drinking an essential part of becoming a man and reveals how it nearly destroyed his ability to write. Reprint. 60,000 first printing. Tour. NYT.

Sobriety is More than just Healing the Damage 5 out of 5 stars.
81 of 83 people found this review helpful.

Abstinence from alcohol and other drugs is only the beginning of sobriety. It's the ticket to get into the theater, not the movie we are going to see." -- Passages through Recovery

One of the most important things we learn in recovery is that there really is a way out of all the misery -- if we know which way to go. But abstinence from alcohol and other drugs is just the beginning of our journey, not our destination. And, that journey can be a rough one if we don't know what lies ahead.

Passages through Recovery clearly demonstrates that sobriety is more than just healing the damage. "It's a way of thinking, acting, and relating to others, "Gorski writes, "That promotes continued physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health. The skills necessary for long-term sobriety are all directed at finding meaning and purpose in life."

Use this book as a compass in your recovery to help you stay on course.

Editorial Review:

Based on the experiences of thousands of successfully recovering men and women and written by an acknowledged leader in the field, this revised Hazelden best-seller presents an action plan for relapse prevention. Terence Gorski helps readers understand how recovery works, describing six stages of recovery and offering sound advice for working through the challenges of each.

62 Years of Proven Effectiveness 5 out of 5 stars.

While AA may not be the answer for everyone, it is for many thousands of alcoholics and others. 12-Step programs are popular in many places now, based on the Steps to recovery first written in this book. Alcoholics Anonymous has never been on any best seller list, but it has sold over 20 million copies. This is good reason to take seriously what the authors say in this book. I can add my personal testimonial: the 12 Steps have changed my life for the better. Given the choice between potential death or 12 Steps, I will take the Steps!

A manic stockbroker invents his own religion 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Popular? Yes! A good guide to life? Well I don't know about that.... Rating this book is like rating the Holy Bible. Unfortunately, that's how it is regarded by many in this day & age. I am a recovered alcoholic who found solace in learning to trust my gut, instead of trusting a book written by a stockbroker with only 3 years sober. I did go to AA and one of the first things I heard was "It takes two years to get your brain out of hock, and 3 more to unscramble them". How many years sober did Mr. Wilson have again when he penned this text? Gee... by his own definion, he was rather foggy brained when he wrote his own religion. Hmmmmm..... I can't argue that many people adore this book, people are generally lazy, and enjoy having a "life" handed to them on a platter. So be it.
