Editorial Review:

A child caught in the horror of alcohol and drug addition. A mother helplessly standing by unable to save her. The Lost Years is the real life story of just such a mother and child, each giving their first-hand accounts of the years lost to addiction and despair. Kristina, the second of four children, tells how she turns to alcohol for comfort when she is thirteen. She gives a brutally honest description of her descent into addiction, prostitution, burglary and violent rape until her near death on the floor of a homeless shelter completely alone at the age of twenty-one. Adding a heart-wrenching counterpart to the story, Kristina's mother, Connie, tells of her powerlessness to help her addicted daughter, the break-up of her unhappy marriage and how she comes to terms with her own co-dependency. She is also faced with the worst choice a mother has to make, to close the door on Kristina, sending her onto the streets in order to save herself and protect her other children. Then follows the remarkable story of Kristina's recovery as she lives through rehab, her mother's tough love and the years of acclimating herself to living a normal life.

Editorial Review:

This is a book for anyone who's worried about needing a third glass of wine to fall asleep; anyone who loves TGIF celebrations but hates missing his or her child's Saturday-morning ball game; and anyone who knows he or she won't lose weight unless martinis are given up along with the fettuccine Alfredo. Studies indicate that 10% of Americans--nearly 30 million of us--drink more than we should. Based on 30 years of research, William Miller and Ricardo Muñoz argue that for many people abstinence isn't the only healthy alternative. Controlling Your Drinking shows readers how to become moderate drinkers by making small changes in everyday behavior. After reviewing the research supporting their treatment approach, Miller and Muñoz outline a simple, pragmatic, and adaptable plan for achieving the results you want. Balancing a compassionate, hopeful tone with dry wit, Controlling Your Drinking is an easy-to-follow, science-based approach to moderation that avoids labels and moralizing.

Editorial Review:

Finally someone has gone straight to the real experts: hundreds of men and women who have resolved a drinking problem. The best-selling author Anne M. Fletcher asked them a simple question: how did you do it? The result is the first completely unbiased guide for problem drinkers, one that shatters long-held assumptions about alcohol recovery.

Myth: AA is the only way to get sober.
Reality: More than half the people Fletcher surveyed recovered without AA.

Myth: You can't get sober on your own.
Reality: Many people got sober by themselves.

Myth: One drink inevitably leads right back to the bottle.
Reality: A small number of people find they can have an occasional drink.

Myth: There's nothing you can do for someone with a drinking problem until he or she is ready.
Reality: Family and friends can make a big difference if they know how to help.

Weaving together the success stories of ordinary people and the latest scientific research on the subject, Fletcher uncovers a vital truth: no single path to sobriety is right for every individual. There are many ways to get sober - and stay sober. SOBER FOR GOOD is for anyone who has ever struggled not to drink, coped with someone who has a drinking problem, or secretly wondered, "Do I drink too much?"

Editorial Review:

Available for the first time in paperback, the biography of one of the recovery movement's most influential figures: Lois Burnham Wilson, creator of Al-Anon and wife of AA cofounder Bill W.

Acclaimed author and screenwriter William G. Borchert explores the life and times of Lois Burnham Wilson, the spirited creator of Al-Anon and wife of Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. From her privileged childhood in turn-of-the-century New York City to her socialite status as the 'Wall Street Wife' of the charismatic Bill in the roaring '20s to the couple's audacious crosscountry motorcycle excursions in the 1930s, Lois was every bit the adventure-seeker. But nothing could have prepared her for the chaos, anguish, and loss caused by Bill's seventeen-year descent into the depths of alcoholism.

In this moving story, Borchert reveals how the couple rose from a life of despair to institute one of the twentieth century's most important social movements, and how Lois created a legacy of hope for millions of families devastated by addiction through her uncommon love and unshakable faith.

Borchert drew from a series of exclusive personal interviews with Lois Wilson to write this definitive biography.

The Best booklet on Detachment 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is absolutely the best booklet on detaching with love--a very difficult concept for caretakers and those people living with addicted people!

Good BOOKLET on important topic. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First, this is not a paperback book, but a 5 x 7 Hazelden "booklet" or pamphlet. Writings on this topic seem to be scarce: I could not find a book devoted to the subject. The author offers good advice organized in seven stages, although I could not recognize the reason for them. I could not see that the stages contained any hierarchy of development, or any transformation from simple to complex. In spite of this distraction, I feel that the author's advice is helpful and illuminating.

Simple messages for people who like to complicate life. I've lost track of how many times, the daily meditation has been exactly what I need to hear. I read it every morning, and every night, it really helps me deal with "stinking thinking". Highly Recommended for all addicts.

a valuable tool for sobriety 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a valuable tool for sobriety, though alone it will not keep you sober. It is a daily meditation book for those with substance abuse problems.

Fresh perspective everyday 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

No matter how many times I've read a particular daily meditation, every reading brings a new understanding of the spiritual principle being discussed. This book encourages new layers of recovery year after year. I'm grateful so many people came together to share a new way to live, one day at a time. I've also been told that if you read the entire chapter in the Basic Text that the day's subject quote comes from you'll read the entire Basic Text in a year.

If you are feeling lost and bad about yourself 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I love to read and re-read this book. It's not just about being sober, it's about being human. I feel like I have a personal private therapy session every time I pick up this book to read various passages. It is like you are being personally addressed and all your issues are diminished and you get "freed up". I only wish these authors were "on the road" giving seminars or something but, alas, don't find anything online about that. A truly, loving, supportive, forgiving friend is found when reading these pages. Thank you.

Helpful beyond addiction issues 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be a helpful and useful way to look at one's self not only in the context of alcoholism or addiction, but in the context of life in general. This book comes from a very positive or affirming perspective, encouraging us to forgive ourselves, let go of the past, and take the steps to write our own script for the future.

(I agree with another reviewer's characterization of this as a book on Buddhism rather than Taoism, but that is somewhat beside the point.)

Editorial Review:

The Tao of Sobriety shows how to apply eastern philosophy to enhance recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. With a few simple mental exercises, readers can learn how to quiet "The Committee," those nasty mental voices that undermine serenity and self-esteem. With leaders of the recovery movement enthusiastically endorsing this uniquely helpful book, The Tao of Sobriety is an invaluable addition to the recovery bookshelf.
