This is one of the best books I have ever read about changing eating and the way you think about food. It really teaches you to listen to your body and not all the fad diets out there today. I would recommend this book to anyone with a weight problem that stems from disorderly eating.

Editorial Review:

People with normal eating patterns eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. But people struggling with binge eating relate very differently to this most basic need, often risking depression, gastrointestinal problems, and even death because of their problems with food. This book offers an eight-week, cognitively based program to help you learn to pay attention to hunger cues, keep track of your feelings about food, and develop an eating schedule that discourages binge eating.

In a series of easy exercises, the book guides you toward taking control of eating habits. First, gradual changes help you eat only when hungry or when a mealtime is scheduled. Then, awareness exercises help you stop eating when moderately full. Finally, by using cognitive techniques to control the tendency to eat for emotional reasons and journaling exercises to stay motivated and on track, you’ll learn how to retrain yourself to maintain normal and healthy eating habits for life.

Lots of info but no practical help 2 out of 5 stars.
40 of 44 people found this review helpful.

This is the second self help book I have invested in. The book tends to go a bit over the top on statistics but does manage to give advice and information on bulimia, anorexia and BED all at the same time. The author is obviously well read in such matters and the book is full of useful information. Useful if you don't already know why you or a relative have disordered eating. Sadly as with the last book I knew all the information already, the book added nothing and certainly hasn't guided me in overcoming my eating disorder. The author does acknowledge that sometimes a person will need some kind of one to one therapy to overcome the problem. Perhaps those with minor disorders will find a solution here and I'm sure it will help others understand why someone has an eating disorder and how they can help. Unfortunately the book has convinced me that self help books like this are not the answer and that professional help is required. Coping with an eating disorder, let alone trying to overcome it is difficult enough on your own, I don't recommend this book as the answer it professes, a little help maybe but thats about it.

Editorial Review:

This practical handbook is divided into five sections. Topics include defining binge eating, its potential harm, and its biological and societal causes; how to assess and alter binge patterns; how to change the thoughts that fuel those patterns; the role of medication; and advice on when to consider therapy or other professional help.

Talk About Real!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.

In her book, I believe she cover about mmm... three or four years, I really can't remember. Anyway it's a long period of time. One thing that she does that annoys the heck out of me is that she'll skip a whole month of entries but I guess that's the author's way of cutting out insignificant things.

Basically a girl named Blythe, which I think maybe be her middle name, becomes anorexic in middle school because of a friend. On of her friends begins to loose weight and Blythe decides she wants to loose to. But it goes beyond loosing weight it becomes a desire for thinness, and a fear of food.

Another thing I love about this book is Morgan keeps it so real. She said one of the- the truest thing EVER published about our human ways. It's on page 49 and is the...um... 4th paragraph I believe since the book is copy written I don't want to post it without permission. But what she says in that paragraph is so overwhelmingly true that I had to put down the book and think about my life. Although what she says is completely irrelevant to her eating disorder I couldn't write this review without reference to that paragraph.

Would I recommend it? Heck yeah! To anyone, even if you're not anorexic or never have been, even if you think the disease is stupid, anyone should get this book. Recoverees, havebeens, thinking about its and neverwillbees, get the book. You'll understand what it's like to have the disease for this one girl and may have a whole new outlook on anorexia.

Editorial Review:

Morgan Menzie takes readers through a harrowing but ultimately hopeful and inspiring account of her eating disorder. Her amazing story is told through the journals she kept during her daily struggle with this addiction and disease. Her triumphs and tragedies all unfold together in this beautiful story of God's grace.

Features include: daily eating schedule, journal entries, prayers to God, poems, and what she wished she knew at the time. It's the true story of victory over a disease that is killing America's youth.

Serious Marijuana (a book for all plant lovers who want advanced material) 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

To have gone through this book and come out the other side is a profound experience, like some sort of a futuristic biology class that specialized in the stuff that gets you best baked. I would not hesitate to force any kind of plant lover to gravitate towards this book like it was about a rose bush or an apple tree. It is a progressively deeper and meaningful insight into the world of plants and the humans who care for them. On one page we are getting an illustrated history of the evolution of the cannabis plant and on the next page how to use materials to enhance the genes that make flowers big like they where back in the prehistoric ages. It is unparalleled in the way its advanced scientific information is brought out in a practical and applicable manner to your grow. The best part is that we can have it all now. The fact that Greg Green is a cotemporary makes now the best time to repeat what he is advising because you can do it the same way with the same stuff. The evidence is in the book. Nowhere else, anywhere else, has anything, even remotely addressed the kind of topics in this book, let alone experiment and produce consistent results with them. This kind of detail is avant-garde marijuana research. It is influencing and changing the way cannabis cultivation is done on daily bases.

Chapter 1: Overview of the Cannabis Strain Market
Chapter 2: Basic Breeding
Chapter 3: Donor Parents, Pollination and Seeds
Chapter 4: Compatible Breeding Models
Chapter 5: Plant Cells, Growth and Hormones
Chapter 6: The Code of Life
Chapter 7: Evolution and Mutations
Chapter 8: Tissue Culture
Chapter 9: What the Market Wants
Chapter 10: Quarantining Foreign Cuttings
Chapter 11: Breeding Talk
Chapter 12: How to Protect Your Work
Chapter 13: The Breeding lab
Chapter 14: Product Testing and Dealing with the Consumer
Chapter 15: Seed Gender, Plant Gender and Sex-Inherited Traits
Chapter 16: The Effects of Chromosome Modifications In Cannabis
Chapter 17: The Evolutionary Conduit of Dioecious Cannabis Plants on the Outcome of Inbreeding Depression with Cannabis
Chapter 18: Cannabis Plant Morphology and Breeding Traits
Chapter 19: Advanced Floral Traits
Chapter 20: Advanced Breeding Principles
Chapter 21: The Basics of Cannabis Photosynthesis Chemistry
Chapter 22: The Scientific Classification of Cannabis, Cannabinoids and Cannabinoid Receptors
Chapter 23: Force Flowering Concepts and a Correct Approach to Calyx Development

It is thanks to fresh new invigorating material like this that we are finally going to get a pause in the factory pumped out marijuana cultivation articles that get rehashed every year. For anybody who wants to be blown away by a Marijuana book, be blown away by Greg Green.

Editorial Review:

The Cannabis Breeder's Bible offers real-world, professional techniques for breeding primo pot and gives precise growing information for 60 popular marijuana varieties. The book covers new hybridization techniques, international seed law issues, protecting new breeds or strains from knockoff artists, shipping seeds and clones, breeding lab designs, product testing, primordial cannabis, landrace and lost strains, common mutations, and more. This useful guide also features a wealth of photographs, instructive illustrations, and in-depth interviews with breeders and seed bank professionals.

Editorial Review:

Our drug prohibition policy is hopeless, just as Prohibition, our alcohol prohibition policy, was before it. Today there are more drugs in our communities and at lower prices and higher strengths than ever before. We have built large numbers of prisons, but they are overflowing with non-violent drug offenders. The huge profits made from drug sales are corrupting people and institutions here and abroad. And far from being protected by our drug prohibition policy, our children are being recruited by it to a lifestyle of drug use and drug selling. Judge Gray's book drives a stake through the heart of the War on Drugs. After documenting the wide-ranging harms caused by this failed policy, Judge Gray also gives us hope. We have viable options. The author evaluates these options, ranging from education and drug treatment to different strategies for taking the profit out of drug-dealing.Many officials will not say publicly what they acknowledge privately about the failure of the War on Drugs. Politicians especially are afraid of not appearing 'tough on drugs'. But Judge Gray's conclusions as a veteran trial judge and former federal prosecutor are reinforced by the testimonies of more than forty other judges nationwide. Author note: James P. Gray is Judge of the Superior Court in Orange County in Southern California. He has served as former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and as a criminal defense attorney as a member of the JAG Corps in the Navy. In 1998 he made an unsuccessful run for Congress as a Republican against Bob Dornan. Judge Gray has discussed issues of drug policy on more than one hundred radio and TV shows and numerous drug forums around the country.

no title 5 out of 5 stars.

For me, this was a great book. So important that even before I finished my library copy, I bought my own. To have and reread every day, hopefully for the rest of my life. The authors make it seem so easy, which of course it is not, and that is perhaps a fault, but a small one. And they never do address how you managed to get fat in the first place, which for me was at the age of eight. But I am positive that they are right. Whether I can do it, remains to be seen, as I have spent decades on the diet treadmill, even a fasting program for almost a year. My metabolism is messed up big time. But the authors keep saying, over and over, to accept yourself now, and that is so important. If your body works, and you are basically healthy, and you can do what you want, why beat yourself up if you don't look like Kate Moss? This is something to hold onto in our thin obsessed world. Get rid of the scale, and appreciate the body you have. Get clothes that fit and that are comfortable. That goes a long way towards making you feel better about yourself. This was such a user friendly book, easy to read and follow, and it made such sense. I see myself on almost every page. I intend to read some of it every day, just to center myself. If you have found this book, and are reading this page, you need it. I might also add that there is a terrific bibliography, with lots of ideas for further reading if you are so inclined. I found six more books there that might prove to be helpful.

Editorial Review:

Shows chronic dieters how to restore their intuition about how much food their body needs, how to rediscover the delights of food, how to lose weight naturally, and how to discover their natural weight. Tour.

Editorial Review:

In a career spent working with people who want to change their drinking habits, Michael S. Levy has found that the routes to behavioral change vary: abstinence is the successful route for many people, while others can moderate their drinking on their own or with professional help. In this book, he helps people take control of their alcohol problems by teaching them how to think about and address their drinking habits.

Beginning with a set of self-assessments that reveal whether the reader's use of alcohol is creating problems, Levy explains the causes of problem drinking and why it is so difficult to change. He also offers

* guidelines so readers can decide whether to try to moderate their drinking or to choose abstinence* a contract for moderate drinking in which readers decide what they will drink, how often and how much they will drink, and the situations they need to avoid * advice for coping with slip-ups * tools for fighting helplessness and the fear of failure* guidelines for knowing when moderation is not achievable

Many people are able to overcome their drinking problems without any formal help; Levy stresses the importance of personal commitment in this effort. For those who are unable to moderate their drinking, he provides comprehensive and compassionate guidelines and resources for abstaining.

This book empowers people to tackle their drinking problems and gives them the freedom to do so in a way that fits with their own lifestyles and values.

Jerry Dorsman is a professional, and his book can help you! 5 out of 5 stars.
50 of 52 people found this review helpful.

I've worked with Jerry Dorsman closely, and I wanted to share with you my personal high regards for Jerry Dorsman and his new book "How to Quit Drugs for Good". I was fortunate enough to see Jerry apply many of the methods he details in his book with real people in real settings. Jerry is not a one-track thinker and is aware that different strokes work for different folks. The purpose of his book is to highlight the whole spectrum of treatments available for addictions so that the reader can better select a treatment more suitable to their unique needs. It is a comprehensive manual that goes into detail about all drugs, their effects, and effective treatments and therapies available. One would do very well in selecting this book to help themselves or as a manual in helping others in the field of addictions treatment. I found his first book "How to Quit Drinking Without AA" an essential tool in my own counseling experiences. It was so incredibly useful from a concrete treatment perspective that I referenced it in my own treatment plan development. I saw great results, and I stand by that. That's all I needed to see. Now I recommend all his books, because he cuts right to the chase without all the fluff. When you're in trouble, you don't want to waste time. You want to know what to do and how as soon as you can. This book is not the cure, but it's the best stepping stone to the cure only you can provide. Trust me on this!

I was looking for a book that would help with a family intervention for health issues. I found this book some what helpful; it did outline the mechanics of the process in the second half of the book. The first half was primarily about the psychology of a substance abuser.

Read this book really quickly prior to a family intervention. Easy read, gives the reader a basic understanding of chemical dependency and how to intervene.

Intervention 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is short, concise and to the point. Anyone interested in the process of intervention; especially those who do not want it, will greatly appreciate this book. Full of great wisdom and gives hope to those who feel no hope in trying to help those who are suffering from addiction.

Editorial Review:

In this pioneering work, Vernon Johnson describes intervention- a $ thousands of chemically dependent people to accept help. In terms anyone can understand, intervention shows how to help those with an alcohol or other drug problem, and how to do it right.
