Editorial Review:

In the late summer of 1996, a young reporter on a California newspaper electrified the United States with the charge that the CIA had conspired in the smuggling of cocaine into the US, subsequently disseminated in the form of crack into black urban neighbourhoods. Within days, black communities erupted in fury. Radio stations in Los Angeles, Washington DC and Detroit broadcast thousands of Gary Webb's series in the "San Jose Mercury News". Black politicians seized on the issue, demanding a thorough investigation. As the furore mounted, with the "Mercury News" coming up with fresh disclosures and putting many of the basic documents up on its Internet Web site, the Washington establishment struck back at allegations that challenged the very credentials of the state. First came formal government denials. Then, convoluted and self-contradictory rationales began to appear in the nation's most influential newspapers. This is a survey of the violent storm provoked by Webb's articles. It outlines the charges and dissects the government and media counter-attacks. Webb is by no means the first investigator to explore the CIA's hidden history of drug involvement. The book goes back to the very origins of the Agency, and lays out a saga which shows that the CIA: promoted mind-control drugs in the 1940s and 50s, sponsoring LSD research on unsuspecting citizens - many of them black males, locked up in mental hospitals; was involved in the heroin trade in South-East Asia in the 50s and 60s; backed anti-Castro Cuban drug smugglers in South Florida; struck deals with heroin-trafficking Afghan mujahideen; and organized drug smuggling from Latin America, through Central America, into the US. Alexander Cockburn is the author of "Corruptions of Empire", "Fate of the Forest" (with Susanna Hecht), "The Golden Age is In Us" and "Washington Babylon" (with Ken Silverstein).

a must-read for the recovering addict 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

From the first time I read the back cover of this book, I was hooked. Wurtzel's description of Ritalin as "sugar...the sweetness in the days that have none" mirrored ver batim my own experience with the drug. As a recovering addict, it was impossible not to be moved by Wurtzel's brutally honest and totally real account of her experience with the true nature of addiction - both the pain and the redemption. Yet I wouldn't be altogether surprised if to the average reader Wurtzel is seen as a self-absorbed, attention-seeking brat. For this reason I don't recommend this book to someone with no knowledge of or experience with addiction, not because the book isn't excellent but for that very reason. What makes this book great is Wurtzel's ability to verbalize the seemingly irrelavant details of what it is to be addicted. More, Now Again is not a pleasant read, and to the average person Wurtzel may seem anything but a heroine. But what may seem a depressing, drawn-out whine-fest to some is sure to grab the gut of the recovering addict. Wurtzel puts into words what we all feel, and will tell you truths about yourself that even you were not aware existed. You will laugh with her, cry with her, and ultimately cheer her - and yourself - on as she finds what all addicts so desperately long for - hope.

Editorial Review:

It had reached the point where she couldn't go more than five minutes without grinding up a pill and snorting it. Despite the worldwide success of her memoir, "Prozac Nation" - and the fame and accolades that accompanied it - nothing had changed inside Elizabeth Wurtzel. She saw herself as a terrible failure. She couldn't maintain a relationship. She was fired from every job she held. Exhausted from trying to make sense of a world she saw as increasingly phony, she left New York and headed for Florida. But not before securing from her psychiatrist a prescription for Ritalin (the drug prescribed to treat hyperactivity in children). This memoir is about the search for happiness, about depravity and the will to survive even the most breathtaking self-abuse.

Editorial Review:

In the rush of everyday life, most people have difficulty finding ways to give their relationship with food the full attention it deserves. Demanding diets saddle you with guilt about your appetite, but overeating and mindless snacking prove ultimately unsatisfying as well. Mindful eating is a whole new way of looking at food. Instead of rushing through meals, mindful eating emphasizes slowing down and savoring what you eat.

Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful, by the author of Eating Mindfully, includes mindfulness tips, activities, and checklists to help you start a mindful eating program, evaluate your progress, and discover a healthier and richer relationship with food.

  • Become aware of hunger cues
  • Make wise food choices
  • End emotional eating
  • Practice self-acceptance and compassion
  • Be in the moment at mealtime

"This book could be a godsend for anyone suffering from lifelong issues around eating, weight, and appearance. It presents a sane and novel approach to finding a balanced relationship to food, eating, and your body through mindfulness. The book is written by someone with obvious depth of experience and savvy who is definitely on your side, whatever your difficulties or challenges. Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful may be just what the doctor ordered, or would have but couldn't--until now."

Editorial Review:

Millions of dollars are spent each year on weight-loss products, mostly the result of futile attempts to correct an underlying and misunderstood problem: food addiction.

Since beginning her own recovery from food addiction in 1977, Sheppard has helped thousands of people live healthy lives by following her comprehensive program. The crux the program's success is the Recovery Food Plan, which effectively eliminates cravings for sugar, carbohydrates, caffeine and personal trigger foods, which not only add unwanted pounds, they literally wreak havoc in the body.

Food Addiction: Healing Day by Day appropriately begins on January 1, a time when most people are looking to shed unwanted holiday pounds and begin a healthier lifestyle. Each daily entry includes an affirmation for readers to focus on as well as a point of reflection, and offers an insightful message from Sheppard as someone who's "been there", helping them to:

  • Overcome emotional barriers to recovery
  • Avoid people who sabotage recovery efforts
  • Recognize and prevent relapse
  • Stay motivated, especially during challenging times

At the end of each week, Sheppard poses thought-provoking questions to ensure that readers stay honest to the plan, keep their emotions in check, and avoid destructive behaviors. Sprinkled throughout are helpful "stress busters" and real-world tips to help readers achieve success.

Essential handbook from the master of supervision 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The only thing better than having this book is having the opportunity to hear David Powell speak in person. I had the privilege of attending a two day seminar on supervision by Dr. Powell, and his wisdom and inspiration for the field of counseling is truly amazing. This book is well thought out and practical, very helpful in guiding one through basic as well as more complex issues of supervision. Most credentialing bodies utilize his book for continuing education, and for good reason. Cannot say enough about Dr. Powell and this book.

Editorial Review:

This groundbreaking work, now available in paperback, is the standard text for the training and education of supervisors in substance abuse counseling. The blended model of treatment presented here is a synthesis of several established schools of therapy, and utilizes developmental, psychodynamic skills, and family therapy perspectives. Firmly grounded in both theory and practice, this book offers methods of supervisory contracting, observation, case presentation, modeling, intervention, and evaluation. Ethical and legal concerns are also addressed. Clinical Supervision provides the knowledge base that substance abuse supervisors will need in the coming years.

Not only for the overweight 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 37 people found this review helpful.

I have reviewed this book two times previously but for some reason they were not posted. Maybe the third time will be the charm...I think any serious Course student would benefit from reading this book for we all have issues with food though maybe not a weight problem. In addition, the issues raised in this small book are applicable to all addictions, obessesions and problems. And it is still in print and available if you look around.

a miracle in print 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a clearly written book which is taken from A COURSE IN MIRACLES and helps you to lose the ego and when this happens you can begin to eat normally and eventually get to a healthy weight, not a weight loss book a life book.

As Thin As I Want To Become 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is excellent! And,it's thin----as thin as I want to become. So many diet books become heavy, filled with superfluous minutiae about how many cacao b eans Moctezuma put into his chocolate drinks in order to get enough energy to please his harem.
We don't NEED that. I have a friend named Carlos Valle who carries all of that stuff in his head.
This little book approaches weight loss metaphysically. It's wonderful. All that's lacking is the address for the Hemlock Society in case I fail

Editorial Review:

On May 16th, 1499 Amerigo Vespucci set sail for the New World. Three months later, having navigated his way along the coastline of Brazil, he washed up on an idyllic desert island fifteen leagues from the mainland. There he was appalled to discover a tribe of hideous Indians, their mouths stuffed full of leaves "like beasts." The leaves were coca, source of the drug cocaine.
Five hundred years later, the effects of the discovery are still felt. In 1999 South America produced 613,4000 tons of coca, with a potential yield of 765 tons of cocaine. Last year a United Nations report estimated that the global cocaine trade generated $92 billion per year - $20 billion more than the combined revenues of Microsoft, Kellogg's and McDonald's.

For millennia, South Americans had used coca to cure everything from stomach maladies to snow blindness. Four hundred and fifty years before the civilized world discovered local anesthesia, the Incas were performing brain surgery using the numbing coca. For centuries conquistadors fed the Indians the leaves while they mined silver - fuelling the Spanish Empire while simultaneously decimating South America's population.

And when cocaine hit Europe and North America it caught on there too. It was incorporated into drinks and tonics as a pick-me-up, including the most famous of all, Coca-Cola. The drug created waves of addicts around the world until it was banned in the early twentieth century. By the 1960s if was back, and has been creating all sorts of trouble ever since.

Dominic Streatfeild examines the story of cocaine from its first medical uses to the worldwide chaos it causes today. His research takes him from the arcane reaches of the British Library to crack houses in New York to the jungles of Peru and Colombia. Along the way he speaks to some of the thousands involved in the trade: economists, scientists, botanists, lawmen, historians and traffickers, creating what is by far the most definitive history of a white powder worth more than its weight in gold.

Best 15 bucks I've ever spent... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For an "on the go" person in recovery like me, this is like the blackberry of 12 step meetings. Any page I open in this book, seems to give me exaclty what I need to read at that time, to give me a spiritual perspective on any situation. The way the author explains the quotes with ease, and then allows the readers to internally answer some questions regarding the quote, can bring tranquility to a turbulent head.

I wish more books on recovery were written this way.
Thank you Michael Z!!

Editorial Review:

"Instead of telling God how big your fears are, start telling your fears how big your God is." With this powerful quote, author Michael Z opens the door to The Wisdom of the Rooms. Rich in content, deep in meaning, and simple in application, Wisdom delivers timeless, relevant and highly practical advice that will instantly change your perspective and give you new ways of dealing with life on life's terms. In this highly acclaimed book Michael Z takes you on a spiritual journey towards a happier, more fulfilled life, inspiring you to once again to trust in and surrender to a God of your understanding.

Although not OA approved literature, it is well worth any OA'er reading. The author states that the BIG BOOK is still the bible, and he reads it often, but his book shows us overeaters the 12 steps from a compulsive overeaters perspective. Something he said helped me to return to program something like its not just another diet program, it's a "save your life program". AMEN

Editorial Review:

Bill B. tells the story of how he lost seventy-five pounds and maintained his weight loss for over ten years. Chapters focus on topics of real concern to us--abstinence, anger, fear and depression, relationships, and money. For those of us who struggle with compulsive overeating, Bill B.'s interpretation of the Twelve Steps and how they apply to overeating can be a valuable inspiration.
