Not Impressed 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read this book in college for a children's lit class. I was not impressed. It is a melodramatic look at the evils of drugs. It reads like a bad after school special, created to frighten teenagers and warn them never to experiment with drugs of any kind. Also, despite the lore following this novel, it was not written by a teenager. Read the novel if must, but there are definitely better books out there about drug usage.

Semi Compelling... 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was kind of interesting. It is NOT written by a teenager. The story is about a girls struggle with drug addiction and personal identity. The things that give away this not so anonymous book is the content. There are several "big" words that are used by te author to suggest that this isnt written by a 14 year old addict. Throughout the story, the narrator spends her time raving about the drugs she uses but spends a little amount of time talking about boys and other "normal" teenage expierecnes. Before the story even starts, there is a note that says this book is fictional and all characters are made up. And the characters name isnt even Alice, Alice is simply a girl who is mentioned once in the book. "Go Ask Alice" is the title of a song sung by Jefferson Airplane. This book was also written during the during the 70s drug hype. This story can be a propaganda book to simply keep teenagers away from drugs. And if all this was real, the people the events and such, why hasnt anyone come through and said anything about this girl or anyone else in the story? Just makes you wonder...
So I recommed that you get this book from a library or a friend because it isnt really worth purchasing.

Editorial Review:

Based on the diary of a fifteen-year-old drug user chronicling her struggle to escape the pull of the drug world.

Ths book is exactly what i needed. I suggest doing the online program while reading the book because that works best. The book it self is just one tool. I think it will help the emotional eater if you just plan on reading the obok and nothing more, but i definitly think its best with the online program on shrinkyourself.com

Really helpful so far 4 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. This is a very powerful read and Totally recommendation to any Korn fans or any readers in general I'm probably not the 1st one to say this but when I 1st heard about this book and read the 1st few pages on here I didn't feel good about it but after I read it all the way thought I finally realized how much the man really went through the isolation and everything else that went on thought his life give the man credit he put his life together and his book shows what the power of Jesus Christ really has I'M not just saying that a christian but as a man. PS anyone who trashes this book really didn't understand what he truly went through as a youth Give the man respect this book is totally worth reading.

Fascinating transformation 4 out of 5 stars.

Let me state upfront that I am a huge music fan, but not a Korn fan. Yes of course I know of them and have heard some of their songs, but it's not really my musical style. But I heard about Brian Welsh's sudden departure from the band, and when I saw this book, I couldn't resist picking it up.

"Save Me From Myself: How I Found God, Quit Korn, Kicked Drugs and Lived to Tell My Story" (240 pages) brings Brian's life story, from his humble beginnings in Bakersfield, CA to his eventual major rock star success as a member of the multi-platinum selling Korn. Brian Welsh describes his rock star days excesses (primarily drugs and a failed marriage) in detail, but more intriguingly for me as a music fan, how Korn came about and wrote the sings they became famous for. Yet his transformation into finding religion is of course even more fascinating, in the way that Welsh renounces the "rock star" life and evolves his life to being a good dad and his devotion to being a Christian.

In all, this is a great read. There is a companion book of sorts to this from Welsh (released the same day as this book), called "Washed By Blood" which is pretty much the same book as this, except that it provides "Discussion Questions" after each chapter, intended to stimulate further discussion among the readers.

Editorial Review:

The incredible story of a controversial rock star, his secret addiction to methamphetamines, and his miraculous salvation through Jesus Christ. Candid and inspiring, Save Me from Myself is a rock 'n' roll journey unlike any other.

Good text on just about every subject of drug abuse 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The authors, Darryl Inaba and William Cohen do a great job of keeping this book very open and simple. They cover almost every drug (5th edition) which a counselor may run into when talking with his students. As a research or higher level order book though, this would not do as it is just too brief on most subjects to really get to know indepth pharmacology or pharmacodynamics on most of the psychoactive drug actions. There is a lot of history, and even a CD-ROM to help you familiarize yourself with many topics of addiction in a very short period of time. In some sections, there is some really good information on drugs I have not seen on the pharmacy shelves for at least 12 years. If you are someone who wants to quickly get to know the subject of psychoactive drugs, then I highly recommend this book for you. His vocabulary is such that it is easy to read, without too much of a serious tone-- and you will not even need a highliner to remember the facts. This book is packed with knowledge. Very enjoyable reading for a change, with lots of good and interesting photographs that make you think. You will enjoy this book, for it is written in a very unique format that makes you want to relax and just turn each page and learn. guyairey

A unique new approach to treating eating disorders

Eight million women in the United States suffer from anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia. For these women, the road to recovery is a rocky one. Many succumb to their eating disorders. Life Without Ed offers hope to all those who suffer from these often deadly disorders. For years, author Jennifer Schaefer lived with both anorexia and bulimia. She credits her successful recovery to the technique she learned from her psychologist, Thom Rutledge.

This groundbreaking book illustrates Rutledge's technique. As in the author's case, readers are encouraged to think of an eating disorder as if it were a distinct being with a personality of its own. Further, they are encouraged to treat the disorder as a relationship rather than as a condition. Schaefer named her eating disorder Ed; her recovery involved "breaking up" with Ed

  • Shares the points of view of both patient and therapist in this approach to treatment
  • Helps people see the disease as a relationship from which they can distance themselves
  • Techniques to defeat negative thoughts that plague eating disorder patients

Prescriptive, supportive, and inspirational, Life Without Ed shows readers how they too can overcome their eating disorders.

Editorial Review:

I wasn’t afraid of death.

How could I be? I lived under death’s shadow every day. When you swallow eighty Vicodin, twenty sleeping pills, drink a bottle of vodka, and still survive, a certain sense of invulnerability stays with you. When you continually use drugs with the kind of reckless determination that I did, the limit to how much heroin or crack you can ingest is not defined in dollar amounts, but in the amounts your body can withstand without experiencing a seizure or respiratory failure. Yet at the end of every binge, every night of lining up six, seven, eight crack pipes and hitting them one after the other bam! bam! bam! every night of smoking and snorting bag after bag of heroin . . . after all of that, when you still wake up to see the same dirty sky over you as the night before, you start to think that instead of dying, maybe your punishment is to live---to be stuck in this purgatory of self-abuse and misery for an eternity. Sometimes you start to think that death would come as a blessed relief.

Toward the end, I found myself contemplating death again. Only this time I wasn’t going to leave it to chance. I was going to buy a gun, load the thing, place the barrel in my mouth, and blow my fucking brains out.

I sat on my parents’ sofa as I pondered this. All I needed was a gun.

And then all--
of my problems--
would be solved.

I want to thank everyone in the fellowship for showing me how to stay clean for more than 14 years to this date of my review. I rarely go to meetings today due a new direction in spirituality, however, the foundation of this program has been grounded in my life to have kept me clean for this long. If you are new to recovery, do what I did. Go to the meetings for the coffee. I say this cause it really doesn't matter why you go to meetings in the beginning as long as you suit up and show up. You will go for the right reasons eventually and they will make you get this book. It worked for me thus far and I hope you find recovery as I did utilizing this book and my sponsor for the answers to stay clean ONE DAY AT A TIME. God Bless!

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestselling follow-up to the #1 New York Times bestseller A Million Little Pieces-the heartrending story of a friendship between a newly-sober James and the charismatic, high-living mobster he met in rehab, Leonard.

A Million Little Pieces was the first Oprah Book Club pick by a living author in over two years. It instantly became a #1 New York Times bestseller, a #1 USA Today bestseller, and a #1 Publishers Weekly bestseller, with over 1.7 million copies in print.

My Friend Leonard picks up right where Pieces leaves off. A New York Times bestseller in its own right before the Oprah pick, My Friend Leonard is James Frey's story of his friendship with Leonard, the larger-than-life mobster who "adopted" James as he left rehab. Leonard, who offers James lucrative-if illegal, mysterious, and slightly dangerous-employment when he needs it. Leonard, of the secret deals, of the surprising passions that belie his violent career choice, of fantastic generosity and ferocious loyalty. Leonard, who has been holding on to some remarkable secrets, and who has invested in their friendship more than James could ever imagine.

My Friend Leonard is, at its core, about the responsibility that comes with loving someone and going out on any number of limbs to care for them. And it is a book that proves that one of the most provocative literary voices of his generation is also one of the most emphatically human.

the right book at the right time 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I don't usually write reviews but I felt like I had to for this one. "Breaking Free" goes beyond just food to explore the essentials: emotions, shame, forgiveness, sexuality. Truly a special book--Roth's voice is very genuine and the personal experiences she relates make you feel like you know her and can trust her. One of those books I'll keep around forever.

Breaking Free from Emotional Eating 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. It was easy to read. If you have any issues with emotional eating, this is the book for you. I could really relate to the book.

transformative 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book changed my life in all the ways I was longing for it to be changed.
I read Geneen's work in the middle of my eating disorder. I didn't begin using it right away because I didn't trust it. I didn't like it. I didn't think it would work. It does.
Different approaches work for different people. I think this worked for me because, deep down Geneen's philosophy is in accordance with my own. I wanted to be my own authority. I wanted it bad enough to give this a try. I didn't tell myself I had to do this forever. I didn't have blind faith. I also didn't give up on it in the first three months. I gave myself a year to decide. A year, where I promised myself I wouldn't diet. A year in which to work through every exercise I reasonably could. In addition to committing to this book, I continued seeing a therapist on a weekly basis. That helped, but this book is what ultimately gave me coping tools. I know that I was in the extreme, not everybody needs as much help as I did. I also know that distorted eating is very normal in this culture. I feel blessed to have been able to examine something so fundamental, and transform what was a problem to a benefitt. I've read all of Ms. Roth's books and enjoyed each of them. This one has a great combination of explaining and exercises to do, which is why I chose it. However, the chapters are widely divergent in terms of work. Her other book "Why Weight" appears to be the same exact work better organized, but less expository. If you are unsure if this work is for you, get "Breaking Free". If after reading through it you feel excited but overwhelmed by the work load, you may wish to try "Why Weight" as a work book.
I never review books. I chose to review this one because it was very helpful to me, and a big risk. I hope this is of some help.
