Growing Up Irish in Post-War Brooklyn 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pete Hamill"s deeply introspective memoir of his coming of age during the late 40's and 50's in working class Brooklyn is a brutally honest account of how alcohol gets integrated into certain rights of passage as people , especially men navigate the transition to adulthood.

His story could be anyone's, except that Hamill writes in a gripping personal style that infuses each episode in his young life with a sense of urgency. The struggle to reconcile with a distant father never deteriorates into a sense of victimhood. I admired the fact that Hamill is able to describe his youthful feelings of anger toward his father without wallowing in them and always with a sense of someone seeking to understand and forgive.

This is a great book on several levels. Hamill captures a sense of the old neighborhoods of New York that have vanished and the strong influence that a sense of place had on young people of his generation when the world was quite a bit smaller.

Editorial Review:

An acclaimed author offers an honest self-portrait of coming of age in a culture that considers drinking an essential part of becoming a man and reveals how it nearly destroyed his ability to write. Reprint. 60,000 first printing. Tour. NYT.

Editorial Review:

Acid Dreams is the complete social history of LSD and the counterculture it helped to define in the sixties. Martin Lee and Bruce Shlain's exhaustively researched and astonishing account-part of it gleaned from secret government files-tells how the CIA became obsessed with LSD as an espionage weapon during the early l950s and launched a massive covert research program, in which countless unwitting citizens were used as guinea pigs. Though the CIA was intent on keeping the drug to itself, it ultimately couldn't prevent it from spreading into the popular culture; here LSD had a profound impact and helped spawn a political and social upheaval that changed the face of America. From the clandestine operations of the government to the escapades of Timothy Leary, Abbie Hoffman, Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, Allen Ginsberg, and many others, Acid Dreams provides an important and entertaining account that goes to the heart of a turbulent period in our history. "Engaging throughout . . . at once entertaining and disturbing." - Andrew Weil, M.D., The Nation; "Marvelously detailed . . . loaded with startling revelations." - Los Angeles Daily News; "An engrossing account of a period . . . when a tiny psychoactive molecule affected almost every aspect of Western life." - William S. Burroughs; "An important historical synthesis of the spread and effects of a drug that served as a central metaphor for an era." - John Sayles.

recommended for Christians! 5 out of 5 stars.

I noticed that the reviews of this book were either really good or really bad. I'm on the "really good" side. Finally a book that treats the real issues and focuses on a right relationship with God as the source of freedom. This book is great for spiritual growth and gives practical help as well. I followed the eating guidelines (basically a set of questions you ask yourself before you eat) and felt that I was set free. I didn't have to fear fattening foods / restaurants / dessert / etc. or count calories. I just ate and stopped when I knew the Lord would want me to. However, it's contingent upon obedience to the Lord, and when my relationship with the Lord grew distant (through other circumstances in my life) my obedience stopped and I went back to my old diet plans ... the ones that work for awhile but lead to obsession and bingeing. The connection between spiritual life and food abuse is clear. I recommend this book because it recognizes the fact that our relationship with the Lord is the root of everything.

Editorial Review:

BLOW is the unlikely story of George Jung's roller coaster ride from middle-class high school football hero to the heart of Pable Escobar's Medellin cartel-- the largest importer of the United States cocaine supply in the 1980s. Jung's early business of flying marijuana into the United States from the mountains of Mexico took a dramatic turn when he met Carlos Lehder, a young Colombian car thief with connections to the then newly born cocaine operation in his native land. Together they created a new model for selling cocaine, turning a drug used primarily by the entertainment elite into a massive and unimaginably lucrative enterprise-- one whose earnings, if legal, would have ranked the cocaine business as the sixth largest private enterprise in the Fortune 500.

The ride came to a screeching halt when DEA agents and Florida police busted Jung with three hundred kilos of coke, effectively unraveling his fortune. But George wasn't about to go down alone. He planned to bring down with him one of the biggest cartel figures ever caught.

With a riveting insider account of the lurid world of international drug smuggling and a super-charged drama of one man's meteoric rise and desperate fall, Bruce Porter chronicles Jung's life using unprecedented eyewitness sources in this critically acclaimed true crime classic.

Fine..........If you're shallow 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I'm a nineth grader in a small town and am being told to read this book for my English class. My teacher spent valuable budget money on a class set of this junk and I'm severely appalled.

First thing first, this book is hardly appropriate for a guy to read and is not school suitable, either. It also contains a good deal of profain language.

It appears to have the capability of reverse physcology and is definately dangerous. If you're shallow enough to just take it with a grain of salt and only read enough to write the report....it's great, but if you read into it......it's just strange. It almost encourages anorexia nervosa. Definately plenty of stereotyping as well.

Good punctuation, though....kudos to the editor.

Verdict: Not Suitable for Teenage Girls, Guys of any Age, High School Students, and of-their-rocker English teachers.

Altho a difficult read this is a great teaching text 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This text provides informative and up to date information regarding a broad range of drug related topic. Althought the reading level is not easy, the information is extremely useful for drug counselors. The information presented regarding psychopharmacology provides an excellent base of preparation for the certification test used in many states. I highly recommend this text as well as many of the web site exercises.

Editorial Review:

A leading college textbook on the subject, the fifth edition of Drugs and Society is an exceptional introductory source of information on drug-related problems in our society. The text integrates the sociological, biomedical and social-psychological perspectives of drug abuse problems in language accessible to students at all levels. It discusses the origins of drug-abuse related issues, the unique features of psychoactive substances, their potential short- and long-term consequences, and current treatment strategies.

Will inspire you 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a huge fan of Debbie Danowski. Reading her previous book, Locked up for Eating Too Much, literally saved my life.

I had been waiting with anticipation for the Overeater's Journal and Debbie did not disappoint!

This Journal, which is in trade paperback size is absolutely wonderful. It comes with inspirational quotes and valuable information on how to assess whether you may have an unhealthy relationship with food. The questions you are asked to answer are thought provoking and will help you to understand yourself better.

The author knows her subject well (overeating) as she has herself been though the nightmare that is food addiction.

If you feel you may have a problem with food or, if you want some help in staying abstinent, this is the tool for you.

The size makes it convenient to carry around with you and I have been toting it around and jotting notes when I feel I need to "vent" my feelings. Excellent book.

NOW! A cookbook containing recipes for food addicts (no sugar, no flour and measured ingredients) would be the perfect companion to this Journal.

Hopefully, this is next on our author's list!!!

Editorial Review:

As a 328-pound woman, Debbie Danowski was on her way to an early death when she entered a treatment center for food addiction 14 years ago. During the six-week stay, she was required to keep a daily journal, a task that she now credits with helping to save her life. The act of writing forced Danowski to uncover thought and feelings she had kept hidden. It was the key to unlocking her lifelong food obsession. Now Danowski brings her special insight and writing expertise to The Overeaters Journal with journaling exercises that explore the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of food obsession.

no title 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The best book I've yet read on compulsive eating. One line touched me to the core. Do I eat to mother myself because I never got any; to nurture myself? Maybe that's why I need a dog, someone who I feel loves me totally and completely as me, not as a daughter or a wife? But this book also showed some very sick people in regards to food, some very bad binges and sneak eating. My life and thought do tend to revolve around food - buying it, cooking it, eating it. The writing is excellent. Roth should really write a novel or something more demanding. She can write well. I do wonder if the writing of other women was not polished up by her.

Editorial Review:

This is how Geneen Roth remembers her time as an emotional overeater and self-starver. After years of struggle, Roth finally broke free from the destructive cycle of bingeing and purging. In the two decades since her triumph, she has gone on to help tens of thousands of others do the same through her lectures, workshops, and retreats. Those she has met during this time have shared stories that are both heartrending and inspiring, which Roth has gathered for this unique book.

Twenty years after its original publication, Feeding the Hungry Heart continues to inspire women and men, helping them win the battle against a hunger that goes deeper than a need for food.
