Excellent 12 Step Companion Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Being in recovery in OA for 6 years and reading the OA and AA 12 & 12's NUMEROUS times, I was looing for something new and fresh to read. This book truly fit the bill. The author really breaks the steps down into many subcategories and delves into issues deeply. Not a substituute for the AA or OA 12 & 12 by any means, but a great "study aid" to the 12 steps.

This book is life altering if you are ready to recover 5 out of 5 stars.

I was shocked to see that there were actually negative reviews on this book.
One of the reviews I read sounds like it was written for another book as the content in the review was not related to any of the people or subjects contained in this book.
... On to what I have to say about this book. This is positively one of the greatest books I have read for overeaters. This is not a diet book, but a healing tool, and a spiritual tool using the twelve steps.
In many ways compulsive overeaters or binge eaters are like alcoholics. It is a compulsive disorder that has so little to do with food. We eat to "stuff" our pain, hurt, anger, fears, regrets, sorrows and disappointments.
Using the tools in this book and going to Overeaters Anonymous I have been binge free for two months. I haven't had any sugar during that time. At one time these both really did seem impossible. But thanks to this wonderful book and the help of OA I am healing. If you have problems with binge eating or compulsive overeating I think this book is well worth the money and more.

Editorial Review:

The author of Food for Thought takes a fresh, in-depth look at the Twelve Steps of Overeaters Anonymous. Each chapter carefully examines and interprets each of the individual Steps.

Review 4 out of 5 stars.

I was assigned readings from this book for my Biopsychosocial aspects of addictions class in graduate school for counseling. Compared to other textbooks, it is a relatively easy read, and there's a great deal of helpful information contained in it. My only complaints for the book thus far are that the chapters on physiology and anatomy include a great deal of information that assumes the reader already has a basis of knowledge in anatomy, biology, and physiology and certain terms aren't defined in context. Also, the book does not contain a great deal of information on "club drugs" such as ecstasy, ketamine, PCP, etc.

Editorial Review:

Designed for the introduction to drugs and substance abuse course as taught in departments of health education, psychology, biology, sociology, and criminal justice, this full-color market-leading text provides the latest information on drugs and their effects on society and human behavior. For over thirty years, instructors and students have relied on it to examine drugs and behavior from the behavioral, pharmacological, historical, social, legal, and clinical perspectives. .

Editorial Review:

BLOW is the unlikely story of George Jung's roller coaster ride from middle-class high school football hero to the heart of Pable Escobar's Medellin cartel-- the largest importer of the United States cocaine supply in the 1980s. Jung's early business of flying marijuana into the United States from the mountains of Mexico took a dramatic turn when he met Carlos Lehder, a young Colombian car thief with connections to the then newly born cocaine operation in his native land. Together they created a new model for selling cocaine, turning a drug used primarily by the entertainment elite into a massive and unimaginably lucrative enterprise-- one whose earnings, if legal, would have ranked the cocaine business as the sixth largest private enterprise in the Fortune 500.

The ride came to a screeching halt when DEA agents and Florida police busted Jung with three hundred kilos of coke, effectively unraveling his fortune. But George wasn't about to go down alone. He planned to bring down with him one of the biggest cartel figures ever caught.

With a riveting insider account of the lurid world of international drug smuggling and a super-charged drama of one man's meteoric rise and desperate fall, Bruce Porter chronicles Jung's life using unprecedented eyewitness sources in this critically acclaimed true crime classic.

Editorial Review:

"The smartest anorexia memoir ever written and a fascinating journey along the torturous pathways of female desire."--Salon

With a new discussion guide

What do women want? Did Freud have any idea how difficult that question would become for women to answer? In Appetites, Caroline Knapp confronts that question and boldly reframes it, asking, instead: How does a woman know, and then honor, what it is she wants in a culture bent on shaping, defining, and controlling women and their desires?

Knapp, best-selling author of Drinking: A Love Story and Pack of Two: The Intricate Bond Between People and Dogs, has turned her brilliant eye towards how a woman's appetite--for food, for love, for work, and for pleasure--is shaped and constrained by culture. She uses her early battle with anorexia as a powerful exploration of what can happen when we are divorced from our most basic hungers--and offers her own success as testament to the joy of saying "I want."

Provocative, important, and deeply familiar, Appetites beautifully--and urgently--challenges all women to learn what it is to feed both the body and the soul.

This book changed my life 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 64 people found this review helpful.

I did this program. Yes, it was intense -- the purification process laid out in this book took me 9 days, 5 hours a day. But it changed my life.

I spent my childhood swimming on a beach that boasted a view of a nuclear power plant - it sat on the same lake, just down the beach a bit. Living in big cities, I absorbed plenty of toxins from the air and the water. These reasons alone would have justified the time and energy it took me to handle the toxins - but I really needed to handle the effects of medical drugs I'd taken over the years, not to mention the street drugs I had "experimented" with when I was in college.

Before I did the purification process, I felt very foggy - I couldn't think as clearly as I wanted to. I was critical of everyone and everything. I had trouble reading -- I was just too foggy!

By the time I completed the program, I was a different person. It's like I had been viewing the world through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars - everything seemed so distant, and I was disconnected from it all.

Now I know that was the effects of the drugs - not only did they create this distance between myself and the world, but they also created the negativity and critical attitude I had. The strange thing is, I didn't even realize I was critical until I was on the program, and it alleviated!

I found myself feeling young again - bright, joyous, able to really take pleasure in life. I like people again!

This was an amazing process for me. It gave me back my life.

I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone who has had any medical treatments or drugs.

Editorial Review:

Find out about the only effective program that eliminates the devastating effects of drugs and toxins. Hundreds of thousands have done this program and live happier, more perceptive and aware lives as a result.

Definitely not for sufferers 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I got this book without reading the subtitle (Strategies for Family and Friends). I thought it might help me with Binge-Eating problems. It didn't. In fact, I got very bored. It was sickeningly boring and only discussed how to handle things if you weren't really all that involved.

First of all, it's my experience with any kind of mental health problem that you can't give a person help if they don't want the help. They have to make a conscious effort to choose to get help. This book somewhat bypasses this whole thing.

Second, it states what you typically see in an Anorexic -- loss of weight, not eating, etc. Okay, who doesn't know this? If you didn't know this, then you probably wouldn't be picking up the book in the first place.

I really don't think this book would be helpful if I had a friend or family member with an eating disorder. It's very unhelpful in my personal opinion.

Skip this book!

Editorial Review:

Surviving an Eating Disorder became an instant success when it was first published in 1988, not just because it was among the first books to alert America to the serious dangers of a silent but widespread disease, but because it offered effective solutions and support for family and friends of those with eating disorders. Eight years after its publication, the book continues to sell briskly and generate continuing interest from readers.

This new edition has been revised to address the cutting-edge advances made in the field of eating disorders, discuss how the changes in health care have affected treatment and provide additional strategies for dealing with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. It also includes updated readings and a list of support organizations. Without a doubt the best book on the subject, it is required reading for those suffering from eating disorders, their families and professionals.

If you are feeling lost and bad about yourself 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I love to read and re-read this book. It's not just about being sober, it's about being human. I feel like I have a personal private therapy session every time I pick up this book to read various passages. It is like you are being personally addressed and all your issues are diminished and you get "freed up". I only wish these authors were "on the road" giving seminars or something but, alas, don't find anything online about that. A truly, loving, supportive, forgiving friend is found when reading these pages. Thank you.

Helpful beyond addiction issues 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be a helpful and useful way to look at one's self not only in the context of alcoholism or addiction, but in the context of life in general. This book comes from a very positive or affirming perspective, encouraging us to forgive ourselves, let go of the past, and take the steps to write our own script for the future.

(I agree with another reviewer's characterization of this as a book on Buddhism rather than Taoism, but that is somewhat beside the point.)

Editorial Review:

The Tao of Sobriety shows how to apply eastern philosophy to enhance recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. With a few simple mental exercises, readers can learn how to quiet "The Committee," those nasty mental voices that undermine serenity and self-esteem. With leaders of the recovery movement enthusiastically endorsing this uniquely helpful book, The Tao of Sobriety is an invaluable addition to the recovery bookshelf.

Editorial Review:

Use the New and Effective Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to:
· Accept Your Thoughts and Change Your Behavior
· Cope with Critical Self-Talk Using Powerful Mindfulness Techniques
· Choose to Live a Healthy Life

Despite ever-widening media attention and public awareness of the problem, American women continue to suffer from anorexia nervosa in greater numbers than ever before. This severe psychophysiological condition—characterized by an abnormal fear of becoming obese, a persistent unwillingness to eat, and severe compulsion to lose weight—is particularly difficult to treat, often because the victims are unwilling to seek out help. This book uses innovative new techniques based on a revolutionary model of psychotherapy called acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, to teach readers that efforts to control and stop anorexia may do more harm than good. Instead of focusing efforts on judging impulses associated with the disorder as "bad" or "negative," this approach encourages sufferers to mindfully observe these feelings without reacting to them in a self-destructive way. Guided to this more compassionate, more receptive frame of mind, readers are coached to employ various acceptance-based coping strategies.

Structured in a logical, step-by-step progression of exercises, the workbook first focuses on providing readers with a new understanding of anorexia and the ways they might have already tried to control the problem. Then the book progresses through techniques that teach how to use mindfulness to deal with out-of-control thoughts and feelings, how to identify choice that will lead to better heath and quality of life, and how to redirect the energy formerly spent on weight loss into those actions that will heal the body and mind. Although this book is written specifically to anorexia sufferers, it includes a clear and informative chapter on when readers need to seek professional treatment as well as advice on what to look for in a therapist.
