Highly analytical, relevant and a record of reality...... 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased PIHKAL from Amazon and read it in it's entirety.

The most poignant aspect of this book reveals that as we are organic machines, our consciousness is just another chemically induced perception and therefore only one valid reality predisposed by evolution for survival.

Shulgin's Genius is honed with such objectivity, innocence, dedication and clarity that he is able to both successfuly and interestingly document the human-mind altering effects produced by the synthesised compounds entirely dedicated to the second-half of this book.

Furthermore, I have read all of the Amazon reviews regarding PIHKAL and feel that some just do not get the extreme depth of this work. Reading this incredibly open account of Human reality means that there will always be dull bits and parts that make one cringe because that's how real life is for one and all.

The potential reader needs to approach this work with an open mindset and absorb the content without pretence, preconception or professional envy affecting clarity because this book is about the other side of the coin.

Finally, to dedicate ones life to recording Human perception so openly in hardcopy is a tremendous quantum leap ahead of the absurd revisionist realities that people in our "Soap World" prefer to pretend that they live via TV and use to deal with personal issues through the application of anger, violence and greed which are wrongly accepted as legitimate relief mechanisms.

In summary, PIHKAL is an extremely important piece in the Jigsaw of the "age of reason" and awareness. Don't be threatened, it definitely deserves at least "5 Stars". Read it, do it and get to the next level...... the evolution of mind.

Editorial Review:

As Internet usage has exploded in recent years, so has the prevalence of compulsive online sexual behavior--a problem first addressed five years ago by Patrick Carnes and coauthors of the breakthrough book, In The Shadows of the Net. Updated with the latest information, trends, and developments, the second edition equips readers with specific strategies for recognizing and changing compulsive sexual behaviors. Personal stories reveal how desperate life can become for online sex addicts--divorce, career loss, and financial ruin are common outcomes. More importantly the authors set forth a path for breaking free from compulsive online sexual behavior and sustaining lifelong recovery.

This is a wonderfully written book with lots of great information. However, I really dislike the newspaper column width of the text. It is very hard to read from such a thick book with this layout.

review 5 out of 5 stars.

So far I've only gotten throught the first chapter. It's a dense amount of information, but it is incredibly well written and informative. No extra words just to take up space and get something into book format. It's definetly a text book. The first chapter gives you an extensive review of the human relationship with drugs since the beginning of time, and forty pages later, I feel enlightened and full of ideas. Incredibly insightful and well worth the price for someone with a deep interest in this field.

Great book, great seller 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is fantastic. It is packed full of useful information about different drugs/substances, including effects, side effects, withdrawal symptoms etc... I'm not sure what other books of it's type have to offer but I am very satisfied with the material. Added bonus - a CD rom with even more information.

The Grandfather Volume of Subsequent A.A. Histories and Biographies 4 out of 5 stars.

I began to research A.A. history at the time of my visit to the A.A. International Convention in Seattle in 1990. Just prior to that, an old-timer on Maui had given me Not-God and Lois Remembers for starters. Also, just prior to that, I had read DR. BOB and the Good Oldtimers and others of A.A.'s own histories such as Pass It On and A.A. Comes of Age. I was ready to roll on A.A. and the Good Book,[[ASIN:1885803168]; Dr. Bob and His Library [[ASIN:1885803257]]; Anne Smith's Journal [[ASIN:1885803249]; The Oxford Group [[ASIN:1885803192]; Rev. Sam Shoemaker,[[ASIN:1885803273]; and the books early AAs Read [[ASIN:1885803265]];[[ASIN:1885803222 Good Morning!].

For me, Kurtz's Not-God was foundational. I used it for its footnotes. I used it to see what Kurtz had not covered. I used it to dig into the whole mysterious realm of higher powers and not-god-ness. And I still use it and quote it in my work today. I call it the grandfather volume because it prompted a real interest by many of us in doing the research and writing about history that A.A. just doesn't undertake. It also introduced us to the immense amount of history still to be unearthed. See Turning Point [[ASIN:1885803079]] ]It showed as much about what still needed to be done as about what Kurtz had done in the earlier dissertation work. Fairness dictates that the reader be aware of the immense amount of research, writing, and publication that has followed Kurtz's book. There are at least a dozen highly capable authors who cover A.A. history today. There are at least 10 that cover Bill Wilson's life. There are many who join Kurtz in surveying A.A. recovery statistics--in 1938 and now. When I published my first book, it was Ernest Kurtz who wrote the Foreword. Today I join him as one of the many who have appreciated the importance of learning, knowing, and applying A.A. history in the recovery scene today. Without Ernie's pioneer publication, most of us would probably still be sitting in meetings, listening to drunkalogs, and wondering where it all started.

Editorial Review:

The most complete history of A.A. ever written. Not-God contains anecdotes and excerpts from the diaries, correspondence, and occasional memoirs of A.A.'s early figures. A fascinating, fast-moving, and authoritative account of the discovery and development of the program and fellowship that we know today as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best book I've read on the 12 Steps. It is such a refreshing perspective and a welcome addition to the Recovery Library of Bill W and Hazelton literature, which, for me, had become too familiar, unfortunately. This book is filled with insight, perspective, metaphors, hope and humor.

Indispensable.

Joe McQ kicks some serious balls when dealing with the deadly disease of
Alcoholism.

Straight talking, funny, insightful, experienced, and to the point without
being preachy - the way only a real drunk can talk to drunks.

If you are confused about the steps, this book will explain them for you.

Joe, and his buddy Charlie, are modern day patron Saints of AA. Read Joe's
book, and grow.

Make Your State of Mind More Important Than What You Are Doing 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Or, are you allowing your ego to get in your way of being connected?

A great passage in this book is:

"After the great rains, the lion was faced with crossing the river that had encircled him. Swimming was not in his nature, but it was either cross or die. The lion roared and charged the river, almost drowning before he retreated. Many more times he attacked the water, and each time he failed to cross. Exhausted, the lion lay down, and in his quietness he heard the river say, 'Never fight what isn't here.'

Cautiously, the lion looked up and asked, 'What isn't here?'

'Your enemy isn't here,' answered the river. 'Just as you are a lion, I am merely a river.'

Now the lion sat very still and studied the ways of the river. After a while, he walked to where a certain current brushed against the shore, and stepping in, floated to the other side."

Some of my most favorite quotes from this book are:

1. "We only need to be as we were created -- effortless, present, and free."

2. "Guilty and remorseful thoughts do not help, heal, or comfort the person you think you have hurt. In effect, you are simply making the same mistake all over again; you attacked this person; now you are attacking yourself. Attack is the problem, not the answer."

3. "What do I believe that makes these circumstances important enough to be upset?"

4. "If I imagine this situation deteriorating or this person's behavior getting worse, what specifically do I see happening to me?"

5. "Some things are simple, and here's one of them: You can either relax and let go of your life, in which case you will know peace. Or you can try to control your life, in which case you will know war."

6. "Awareness, more than any other factor, is the key to cleansing your mind and making it whole."

7. "True communication is remembering that everything is relationship --- that, regardless of the appearance, no one stands alone."

8. "I see what I decide and react as I choose."

9. "As someone said to me recently, 'The next time you think there is some situation you can control, try doing it when you have diarrhea.'"

I chose this book because being fully in the present moment, no matter my history or lack thereof with my interlocutor, gives me choice.

As I read this book, I was happy to have found many places where I agreed with Hugh Prather, and some places where I wrote in the margins that I disagree.

One part of this book that was of particular interest to me was the exercise that Prather takes readers through in how to be socially involved with difficult people (breath your way into responding to who you are, in the presence of who that 'difficult' person is).

This is a book that I didn't want to put on the book shelf, amongst the books that I've read, because I felt compelled to look back through many pages, where I've highlighted things that I will apply in my life.

Editorial Review:

"Letting go is the bottom-line key to happiness," states Hugh Prather. And in The Little Book of Letting Go, he offers a simple three-step process for shedding prejudices, preconceptions, and prejudgments and facing each moment with openness and enthusiasm. Prather first explains why it is essential to learn to let go and then outlines a 30-day plan for spiritual renewal. Finally, he offers specific techniques for getting a grip on habitual reactions, the need to control, and the addiction to conflict.

So many times my sponsees ask me for more thorough guidedance in working the twelve steps from a Chirstian perspective. This is where I tell them to look. Religion and the 12 steps are not in conflict, and this book will show you how to deepen your recovery, work your steps and get closer to God. What more could you possibly ask for?

A necessary resource for leading "The Twelve Steps for Christians" book study meeting. This Journal provides questions for encouraging the group to share their experience, strength, and hope regarding the pages read in the book. It would be "nice" if all attending a study meeting were to have a journal, but it is not necessary. Depends on your personal preference.
