If Alcohol's a Problem, Look No Further... This Works! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Having had a dear friend who used this method after having tried AA, rehab numerous times, and everything else, let me tell you firsthand, the Sinclair Method works. The Cure for Addiction now means that one doesn't have to travel to Finland for treatment. One doesn't have to abandon life as they know it to endure 30 days of rehab or attend AA meetings; the Sinclair Method integrates into normal life and no one has to know you're on it if you choose to keep it private. The Sinclair Method gave my friend back his life, and all those love him, reason to proselytize it in any way possible.

Editorial Review:

Introducing a revolutionary solution to alcohol dependence, this study outlines the Sinclair Method, a treatment that combines the prescription medication Naltrexone and the continued consumption of alcohol. Already well known in many parts of Europe, this breakthrough remedy will bring relief to the millions who suffer from addiction or to those who are affected by someone else’s. Topics covered include the hard evidence behind the treatment, moving testimonials from cured alcoholics, interviews from clinics that have adopted the method, and details about Naltrexone.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best book I've read on the 12 Steps. It is such a refreshing perspective and a welcome addition to the Recovery Library of Bill W and Hazelton literature, which, for me, had become too familiar, unfortunately. This book is filled with insight, perspective, metaphors, hope and humor.

An excellent supplement for a beginner to use with the Big Book. It may not be approved literature but it is AA principles 100%

Indispensable.

Joe McQ kicks some serious balls when dealing with the deadly disease of
Alcoholism.

Straight talking, funny, insightful, experienced, and to the point without
being preachy - the way only a real drunk can talk to drunks.

If you are confused about the steps, this book will explain them for you.

Joe, and his buddy Charlie, are modern day patron Saints of AA. Read Joe's
book, and grow.

If you're a Christian in Recovery, this is a must have 4 out of 5 stars.

So many times my sponsees ask me for more thorough guidedance in working the twelve steps from a Chirstian perspective. This is where I tell them to look. Religion and the 12 steps are not in conflict, and this book will show you how to deepen your recovery, work your steps and get closer to God. What more could you possibly ask for?

The Twelve Steps for Christians JOURNAL 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A necessary resource for leading "The Twelve Steps for Christians" book study meeting. This Journal provides questions for encouraging the group to share their experience, strength, and hope regarding the pages read in the book. It would be "nice" if all attending a study meeting were to have a journal, but it is not necessary. Depends on your personal preference.

Editorial Review:

"We use The Twelve Steps--A Spiritual Journey as a vehicle to move our people down the road to further discipleship and fellowship. When used in the group experience, it promotes unity and molds people together into the family of God".---Ron & Karen Martin, Founders & Directors, Liontamers Anonymous.

I heard Orson being interviewed on the Dennis Miller radio show and after hearing about his book, I just had to read it. I was blessed that I did. Orson's writing style is wonderfully fresh. I laughed out loud and cried moments later. I felt like I had a lot in common with the way Orson came about his belief's in God and Jesus.

Too Hip for Faith? 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you know someone who's on the fence about faith but mostly think he's just too hip to believe, this is the book! Orson Bean is refreshingly candid, honest, and persuasive! Read at your own risk!

Editorial Review:

Orson Bean starred on Broadway for twenty years, regularly hosted The Tonight Show, sat on the panel of the game show To Tell the Truth, and made appearances in movies like Being John Malkovich. He drank and snorted drugs and DID inhale. But he was never quite happy--until he sniffed around, found religion, and became a recovering alcoholic. This is his story, aimed at those folks who are interested in recovery, but suspicious.

My new ACA Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
189 of 192 people found this review helpful.

Whoever said it was too cookbook hasn't appreciated the the value of having a thorough one at hand. I loved the Friel's approach. It is a bit harder on the ego than the Woititz ACOA book but this one includes ALL dysfunctions, and I know even after years in recovery I will still find valuable resources in this book to guide me along my bumpy journey. As one who has NO idea what is normal, yet somehow manages to function at the basic level in society, I definitely appreciated the simple yet thorough approach used here.

This book isn't another "blame the parents--give you an excuse" soother. It requires that we take responsibility for our adult lives, recovery, happiness, misery, relationships, dysfunctional patterns & our future. This book shows me exactly what healthy (they don't believe in the statistical normal, to them normal means emotionally healthy, which is a far more useful definition of the ambiguous term "normal" anyway) living means, looks-smells-tastes-feels like! I can use this book as a check-up to see if I'm on the right track and if not, follow the suggestions or get further help.

Most of all this book helped me to recognize that recovery isn't an overnight process, can't be done alone in isolation, that I'm human and mistakes are actually a GOOD and WELCOME experience and do NOT have anything whatsoever to do with my self-worth. This book even includes several chapters on how to respond to con artists, abusers & generally rude, mean or unhealthy people. How to deal with zingers, how to set healthy boundaries & protect ourselves & our healthy boundaries, I could go on for pages praising this book.

I've bought numerous other self-help books & this one was the best. The authors do suggest waiting until one has 2+ years of recovery before tackling this book. To hell with that. Read it now, and every step of the way on your journey. Start feeling better about YOU & your life right NOW, today. Good luck on your journey, happy discoveries to you.

Editorial Review:

A practical guide to begin dealing with the pain and trauma of being raised in a dysfunctional family. Your parents may not have been able to teach you lifeskills but it is not too late to learn them now. This book will help the reader to learn how to respond to the challenges, problems and traps that they are faced with daily.

This book is a great companion with the 12 Step Devotional Bible. It isn't necessary for your 12 step Christian Book study, but it is a wonderful companion and I would definitely recommend this book too.

12 Step Recovey 5 out of 5 stars.

This recovery Devotional is superior for my 12 step accountability group. We find it enlightening and helpful. The printing is a bit small, but the words, though small, are powerful. We use the devotional in our personal daily devotions as well as at group meetings, after our opening prayer and before our meeting.

Good and Concise 4 out of 5 stars.

This sticks to the step at hand, and is goood at both explaining the steps and focusing on the importance of God.

The Twelve Step Life Recovery Devotional 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent resource for those who are involved in a recovery program and want to know more about Jesus. I became familiar with the book when some women who are incarcerated requested that I provide a copy to them. It appears to be exactly what they want and need.

Editorial Review:

A daily devotional that helps people understand and apply the biblical principles found in the 12 steps of recovery. There are 30 meditations for each step.

Wisdom of the ages 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book condenses a lot of AA and Al-Anon thought into a few fast-reading pages. It contains many handy tools and techniques for managing difficult emotions and letting go of the need to control others.

I don't believe it's just for people in AA and Al-Anon. The wisdom in its pages is universal, although the constant references to AA and Al-Anon might put off an average reader.

I want to share this book with many people, to give them a taste of what serenity -- emotional independence -- feels like.

I highly recommend the book as a companion text to other program literature. It does not replace the Big Book or Paths to Recovery, but it condenses and clarifies a lot of age-old wisdom in a few easy-to-read pages.

Editorial Review:

And acceptance is the answer to all my problems... A.A. members know of Dr. Paul's wisdom through the often-quoted passage from his story in A.A.'s Big Book, Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Paul continues sharing his astute insight and gentle humor with discussions of the physical, mental, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual aspects of sobriety.

Sobriety is More than just Healing the Damage 5 out of 5 stars.
81 of 83 people found this review helpful.

Abstinence from alcohol and other drugs is only the beginning of sobriety. It's the ticket to get into the theater, not the movie we are going to see." -- Passages through Recovery

One of the most important things we learn in recovery is that there really is a way out of all the misery -- if we know which way to go. But abstinence from alcohol and other drugs is just the beginning of our journey, not our destination. And, that journey can be a rough one if we don't know what lies ahead.

Passages through Recovery clearly demonstrates that sobriety is more than just healing the damage. "It's a way of thinking, acting, and relating to others, "Gorski writes, "That promotes continued physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health. The skills necessary for long-term sobriety are all directed at finding meaning and purpose in life."

Use this book as a compass in your recovery to help you stay on course.

Editorial Review:

Based on the experiences of thousands of successfully recovering men and women and written by an acknowledged leader in the field, this revised Hazelden best-seller presents an action plan for relapse prevention. Terence Gorski helps readers understand how recovery works, describing six stages of recovery and offering sound advice for working through the challenges of each.

Editorial Review:

Renowned therapist, eating disorder specialist and recovering food addict Kay Sheppard helps countless individuals win their battles over food addiction-people for whom diets, pills and purging have become a way of life. In 1993, her groundbreaking book, Food Addiction: The Body Knows, explained the illness of food addiction from the physiological origins through recovery.

Today, obesity is on the rise. In addition to the 300,000 overweight people in this country, millions more who may not look overweight are unable to control their eating.

Sheppard's follow-up book, From the First Biteoffers the latest medical insights into food addiction coupled with time-tested, practical advice.

Unlike other books that are very dry in nature, this book includes compelling personal stories and do's and don'ts from other recovering and relapsed food addicts, including the author herself, who began her own recovery in 1967. The book explains how to avoid the physiological and situational triggers that lead to relapse; how to confront the emotional issues behind food cravings; how to establish a balanced food plan that eliminates cravings; and how to avoid hidden dangers in cleverly packaged foods. The book also includes a handy Twelve-Step workbook.

Just as Sheppard's first book broke new ground, her latest work offers a critical first step for food addicts on the road to physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.

Healing emotional hunger one step at a time 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

Before the image of an OA meeting being filled with obese people fills your mind ... think again. An overeater can be anyone ... fashion model ... successful accountant in a size 8 ... fitness trainer ... midly plump dental assistant ... anyone. The causes and reasons are different. Overeating is not a lack of willpower but an emotional relationship to food that has someone not know when to stop. Eating is natural, overeating needs to be addressed so as to protect our very health. This wonderful "bible" for Overeaters Anonymous helps those in recovery work their healing one day at a time. Whether at a meeting, or in a personal inventory, or in working with a sponsor ... this contains elements of surrendering our will power to a higher power. Whether you believe in God or not, the notion of not having to do this alone is a welcome relief for many caught in a viscious circle of emotional medication through misuse of food. The concept of a higher power enables someone to be open to group support and feel the possibility of living a healthier way. This book is a program that is not a quick fix, a diet, or anykind of body makeover technique. What it provides is a way of thinking and living that addresses the root of using food as a drug.
