Every gay man should read this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am proud to have written this book. When I went through my own past struggles with addiction, there was nothing for me to read that offered the kind of information and direction that truly reflected my own struggle. I feel that this work really offers any gay man struggling with his sexual behavior - a real chance to evaluate his concerns and figure out how to get help. I hope it helps you or somone you love.

Editorial Review:

Robert Weiss, director of the Sexual Recovery Institute in Santa Monica, California, avoids political and moral arguments and instead focuses on the clinical approach, asking the question, "Is your sexual behavior causing problems in other areas of your life?" Cruise Control leads men to a better understanding of the difference between sexual compulsion and non-addictive sexual behavior within the gay experience, and it explains what resources are available for recovery. A timely and important contribution to the body of recovery literature, Cruise Control provides understanding, empathy and encouragement to gay men seeking healthy sexual expression.

A primary text for our Fellowship of SAA in Tulsa. Most members have personal copies also. Truly an extremely valuable tool for avoiding the "bubble" of addiction and staying focused on soberity.

Few things start my day better or help slow down an out of control day like taking time to read and absorb a daily meditation from this book. Each day's reading is a short page, starting with a quote, moving on to some written thoughts about the quote and how it applies to me, and to today, and then ending with a synopsis of the thoughts. Very helpful, very concise and very much on point for anyone in recovery.

Editorial Review:

These meditations guide us to the strength and courage within ourselves that is necessary to face the lingering shadows of sex addiction. With the inspiration and support unique to Hazelden meditation books, Answers in the Heart provides solace for the pain and inspiration for lasting recovery.

Editorial Review:

A deeply personal story of a woman's addiction to and recovery from the high of dangerous encounters. In this powerful, often lyrical memoir, a woman learns to value herself—as a whole person rather than as a sexual object. Recounting her past experiences as part of her journey toward recovery, Sue William Silverman explores her skewed belief that sex is love, a belief that began with her father's sexual abuse from early childhood into adolescence. She tells of college years in Boston, an early marriage in Galveston, and a roller-coaster life of sex and self-destructive behavior. Finally, having become addicted to danger itself, she hits bottom emotionally and spiritually. At this point, with the help of a trusted therapist, Silverman begins to discover the difference between the high of dangerous encounters and the more reliable promise of love. This utterly candid account may be the first book by a woman to examine sexual addiction. But the misguided search that became Silverman's life has resonance for other addictions, whether to food, drugs, alcohol, or work—anyone whose only satisfaction is now.

Compassionate, passionate, humorous, on-target 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Ted's personal experiences both in his struggle with sex addiction and in his career as a pilot provide a compelling unity to this book. He has a passion for helping the many people who struggle with this problem, but who are not receiving the help where they should be receiving it -- from their churches, who have the truth of the Bible, but often don't focus it in this area.

The book has a dual-fold purpose. Foremost, to help the person caught in the bondage of sex addiction. Secondly, to sound a "wake-up call" to churches who are letting these persons slip through the cracks. It is effective on both counts, though I think Roberts sometimes tries to address both simultaneously, and would be better off focusing on the sex addicts as his primary audience, then addressing the churches in dedicated chapters toward the end.

It is an easy read -- he writes in a conversational and "story telling" manner. He uses humor frequently and in good taste to help break the tension of a tough subject. There are also some helpful chapters from his wife offering her perspective on what it's like to heal along with her husband.

I've read many books on the subject, starting with SLAA's big book, the SA white book, and Christian books such as Every Man's Battle (Arterburn and Stoecker), Faithful and Tree (Laaser), Not Even a Hint (Harris), and the Purity Principle (Alcorn). I found something helpful in all of them, but Roberts' is one of the best. It has the "empathy" of the secular 12-step "big book" literature on sex addiction, but goes beyond self-defined bottom lines and "God as I understand him" to a much more Biblically grounded faith and vision.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Ted Roberts found Christ in the skies over Vietnam, where he flew life-and-death missions as a Marine fighter pilot. Unbeknownst to his wife, however, he also brought home from the war an addiction to pornography. Since his recovery, Dr. Roberts has spoken to thousands of men about similar problems, and he has reached an inescapable conclusion: Hell is using sexual bondage to tear the Church apart! Our world, our homes, our churches have become raging battlefields over this issue, and the Internet a stealth bomber from hell with pornography as its payload. More and more men-even Christian leaders-are fighting for their spiritual lives. Now churches can counterattack the enemy's assault with this effective battle plan and strategy for dealing with sexual addiction. It's a matter of spiritual life or death.

Educational 4 out of 5 stars.

This text provides insights into sexual compulsivity, from affairs to internet pornography and why this happens to some. Maureen incorporates the works of Pia Mellody and Patrick Carnes into her book.

Editorial Review:

Sexual addiction is a problem that affects millions of people. Maureen Canning, LMFT, who has extensive experience treating sex addicts, explains its roots and how those afflicted can recover.

This book also explains the poisonous childhood seeds that lead to public scandals like the revelations involving former congressman Mark Foley.

Canning shows how compulsions are the product of early childhood abuse and how patterns, from the most violent to the most commonplace, develop. She explains that the overriding emotion sexually addicted people feel towards the partners with whom they seek intimacy is anger turned into sexuality, or "sexualized anger." This yields a false sense of security and power, an "aggressive tendency," which destroys any chance of a healthy relationship. Lust, Anger, Love offers a comprehensive and enlightening look at the origins of these little discussed behaviors and maps out a plan for recovery.

Helpful and Biblical 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Eckman does a wonderful job of uncovering what is happening under the surface when it comes to all types of addiction. This book is not only helpful for those facing battles with drugs or alcohol...it would be a helpful read for anyone facing any type of addiction. He points to the family background and its long term effects and simple processes and patterns within addiction. He points people to a new understanding of what it means to be a child of God and find our security and meaning through our Creator. It's well worth the price and time to read. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

People from all walks of life give in to temptations and adopt patterns of secrecy and shame. David Eckman reveals how appetites can dominate the lives of men and women, and addictions to sex, pornography, food, chemicals, and even work can take hold. This is a much–needed Christian look at fighting addiction that should be in every church and home.

With research support and biblical principles, Eckman shares

  • why unhealthy appetites take root in people
  • how to trade shame for a new identity in Christ
  • why commitment to prayer, confession, and growth protects us

Readers will discover how to break the pattern of out–of–control desires and extend grace, not judgment, to those facing such struggles.

This book was extremely helpful in my recovery. I learned how to evalute my own needs and the reasons I choose certain people to get in relationship with. It pulled she cover off my denial. Which is not a fun thing, but necessary for hope and a future. It may have prevented more heartbreak and pain in my future relationships. I felt like parts of this book were written about me. Dr. Arterburn obviously has a good grasp of codependency and other addictions. Buy it. It may change your life.

Editorial Review:

Addicted to "Love" describes the many forms this addiction can take. Like alcoholics or drug addicts, love addicts get high on sex and romance and need ever-greater doses to keep going. Stephen Arterburn examines this addiction-who it afflicts and what you can do if you suspect that your spouse, friend or family member may be suffering from it. With compassion and wisdom, Arterburn points the way to psychological and spiritual healing that can enable men and women to enjoy real and lasting intimacy.

Victory over Temptation 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Having recently finished reading Impossible Joy, I feel compelled to respond to some of the statements made in the previous review.

First, Ron's premise that we addicts are "sinners" is completely consistent with the 12 step movement. Our illness compels us to perpetrate moral crimes. The fact that it is truly an illness explains why we can't stop on our own, but does not absolve us of the responsibility for, or consequence of our "sins". Ron's analysis of scripture clearly articulates how Jesus, the true "higher power," not only saved us from the ultimate consequence of our sins, but can also provide ongoing victory over all of our temptations, one temptation at a time.

The previous reviewer's assertion that the original 12 steps formulated by Alcoholics Anonymous doesn't have Jesus in it, is laughable. Bill Wilson based the steps on the spiritual principles of the Oxford Group, a nondenominational Christian movement founded by Frank Buchman, a Lutheran minister. It is true that Bill and Dr. Bob removed references to Christ, sin, the Holy Spirit, etc, from the 12 steps in order not to alienate alcoholics of other faiths, or no faith, because AA's primary goal was sobriety, not salvation. However, the Road of Happy Destiny, mapped out in these steps, leads directly to our savior. In Impossible Joy, Ron describes how Jesus, walking with us, can bear our temptations and help us live - not free from temptation, but free from the obsession of our particular weakness and the compulsion to act on our temptation.

Certainly people who reject God's laws and his son are forced to reject this book. Recovery from addiction requires admission of our powerlessness to do right, repentance, and absolute surrender to God (Steps 1 - 3). Impossible Joy is advanced recovery, a valuable resource for us addicts who want to move beyond sobriety to true recovery.

In fairness, since this book forces us to look at our powerlessness and our desperate need for God, it will not appeal to those who can't face the truth. In fact, it could cause them to resort to politically-correct-sounding attacks and name calling.

"No God, no peace. Know God, know peace."

Editorial Review:

Impossible Joy chronicles the author's journey through sex addiction and 23 years of 12 Step recovery. From a religious "believism," which did not work, to a personal encounter with the One who really does loose from the power of lust and cleanse. Gives readers a Scripturally sound basis for making their own saving Connection. What emerges is a real Jesus for "For Sinners Only," a new view of the humanity of the Son of man put in practical terms, promising not only sobriety but joyous recovery and freedom.
