I read a lot of books - this was one of them. 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was trying to give up smoking I read a lot of books. this was one of them. this was one of the beter ones. The one that did it for me though was The Voice of Tobacco. Good book, great idea, stopped me and made me laugh as well.

It worked! 5 out of 5 stars.

I smoked 2-3 packs a day of menthols and tried the pills and hypnosis but neither worked. Read this book in less then 2 hours and haven't smoked since! That was over 7 years now and saved thousands of dollars not to mention smelling like a dirty ashtray. Please try this book before you blow money on useless treatments like I did. Good luck!

Editorial Review:

Includes images of many well-known smokers, including James Dean, Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart, Mae West, Charlie Parker and Johnny Depp.
Examines smoking in many guises, including history, culture, art, literature, gender, sexuality and health; also assesses the future of smoking and describes the harm it causes.

Human beings have always smoked, and they probably always will. Every culture in recorded history has smoked something, whether as a cure or for pleasure, whether as part of a ritual or as an aspect of popular culture. It is curious then that no history of smoking has been written based on the assumption that smoking-in all of its forms and products-is a cultural phenomenon common to all human societies.

Smoke: A Cultural History of Smoking Around the World examines the culture of smoking in different traditions and places. From opium dens in Victorian England to tobacco in Edo-period Japan, and from ganja and cocaine to Havana cigars, Smoke encompasses the subject as no book has before.

More than 300 illustrations document smoking and smokers of many substances including tobacco, scented cigarettes, marijuana, opium and cocaine. The essays examine the changing role of smoking in high and popular culture, ranging from images used in advertising to the legal and moral critiques of smoking, and from opera to the Internet. Smoke will appeal to all those who smoke, all those who used to smoke, and all those who have tried-and failed-to give it up.

Editorial Review:

Around-the-clock tobacco talks, multibillion-dollar lawsuits against the major cigarette companies, and legislative wrangling over how much to tax a pack of cigarettes--these are some of the most recent episodes in the war against the tobacco companies. The Cigarette Papers shows what started it all: revelations that tobacco companies had long known the grave dangers of smoking, and did nothing about it.
In May 1994 a box containing 4,000 pages of internal tobacco industry documents arrived at the office of Professor Stanton Glantz at the University of California, San Francisco. The anonymous source of these "cigarette papers" was identified only as "Mr. Butts." These documents provide a shocking inside account of the activities of one tobacco company, Brown & Williamson, over more than thirty years. Quoting extensively from the documents themselves and analyzing what they reveal, The Cigarette Papers shows what the tobacco companies have known and galvanizes us to take action.

Great Motivational Material 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I read this book when I quit smoking and it helped me so much. It is written by someone with an AA background and is written in that kind of a format. Each day for the first few months is a story about someone's struggle with smoking. Then there is a short devotional. I would read a chapter each night before I went to sleep. Somehow that really reinforced my resolve not to smoke for one more day.

I give this book a 5 star for helping you keep the resolve to not smoke!!

If only I could not have bought this book. 1 out of 5 stars.

I recieved this book in the mail yesterday, and today it is ripped up and sitting my kitchen garbage can where it belongs. I didn't even want to take it to the used book store and get a couple of bucks for it because I did not want someone else to waste thier money on it. The index is very decieving. It appears that the author is going to cover all of these topics, but all she did was compile a bunch of peoples stories about their struggles with cigarettes and put them all togother and call it a book. The stories are pretty lame too,at least the ones I read. Admittedly, I did not read the entire book-my urge to put this trash where it belonged was too strong. If I had as much distaste for cigarettes as I have for this book I would never smoke again. This review is my last bit of closure and now I can get on with my life.

Editorial Review:

The decision to quit smoking is far from a casual one. Quitting smoking involves your complete commitment; it must become your number-one priority. Mustering all the support you can get, you need to decide to turn up the flame on your survival instincts, your belief in a healthy future, and your will power and faith that you can and will quit.

The sooner you stop smoking, the better your chances of avoiding some of the unwelcome consequences of smoking. You body and brain begin to recover almost immediately. Cigarette cravings aside, your body wants to stop smoking, and the moment you cut loose the smokes, your respiratory system begins to clear itself out. Here are just a few of the benefits you can reap from kicking the habit:

  • A longer life with a lower risk of cancer and other deadly diseases
  • No more sore throats, congested lungs, and persistent cough
  • The ability to exercise and "get back into shape"
  • Kissable breath and clothes that don't smell like you just came home from a bar
  • Being able to really taste good food
  • Pleasing your family and friends and no more being the outcast

Like all smokers, you've probably tried to quit a half dozen times, only to relapse. Perhaps you'd given up all hope of being able to quit, but now you're getting pressure from others, such as family members, to end your smoking career completely. But how do you take those first steps? And how do you follow through with your commitment to quit smoking? Quitting Smoking For Dummies can help.

Quitting Smoking For Dummies takes a total approach to help you quit smoking – short of yanking the cigarettes from your hands. It gives you the cold, hard truth about why you're addicted and how smoking harms your body – and it helps you develop a plan for finally quitting. Here's just a sampling of the topics you'll find covered:

  • Understanding the various forms of tobacco – and their effects
  • Figuring out why you're addicted
  • Analyzing the health risks of smoking
  • Developing a strategy to quit smoking
  • Exploring nicotine replacement therapies
  • Staying clean: Avoiding the relapse
  • Getting help from support groups and programs
  • Special considerations for pregnancy and teen smoking

So, the question to ask yourself is, "Why wait to quit?" You're going to have to eventually; why not start now? With Quitting Smoking For Dummies, you can start your recovery today, and look forward to a long and healthy life.

After reading ms youngs book A teen's guide to living drug free, I would think that she would have named it a teens guide to being a drug-e, this book realy had good points but I dont think a book can do the work to keeping teens sober they need more drug education class's in schools.

Editorial Review:

The authors of the best-selling Taste Berries for Teens series guide teens through life's toughest challenges.

Dedicated to the fresh, new perspectives of today's teenagers (from twelve through twenty), this new volume shares advice, commentary and stories on dealing with one of the most prevalent challenges of adolescence: drugs and alcohol. But more and more, teens are using their courage and knowledge to meet this challenge head-on, choosing to live a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle.

Divided into six units, each chapter opens with a story from a teen and concludes with "Questions to Think About," to allow the realistic and honest message to set in. Resources and referrals, as well as information on twelve-step programs, are also included.

I bought it as a gift since I quit smoking after reading the book 4 years ago. I had tried to quit smoking a zillion times and the book, gives you enough brainwashing arguments to counter attack every time you are tempted to smoke again.
