Editorial Review:

In the critically acclaimed Five Men Who Broke My Heart, Manhattan journalist Susan Shapiro revisited five self-destructive romances. In her hilarious, illuminating new memoir, Lighting Up, she rejects five self-destructive substances. This difficult quest for clean living starts with Shapiro’s shocking revelation that, at forty, her lengthiest, most emotionally satisfying relationship has been with cigarettes.

A two-pack-a-day smoker since the age of thirteen, Susan Shapiro quickly discovers that it’s impossible to be a writer, a nonsmoker, sane, and slender in the same year. The last time she tried to quit, she gained twenty-three pounds, couldn’t concentrate on work, and wanted to kill herself and her husband, Aaron, a TV comedy writer who hates her penchant for puffing away. Yet just as she’s about to choose her vice over her marriage vows, she stumbles upon a secret weapon.

Dr. Winters, “the James Bond of psychotherapy,” is a brilliant but unorthodox addiction specialist, a
former chain-smoker himself. Working his weird magic on her psyche, he unravels the roots of her twenty-seven-year compulsion, the same dangerous dependency that has haunted her doctor father, her grandfather, and a pair of eccentric aunts from opposite sides of the family, along with Freud and nearly one in four Americans. Dr. Winters teaches her how to embrace suffering, then proclaims that her months of panic, depression, insecurity, vulnerability, and wild mood swings win her the award for “the worst nicotine withdrawal in the history of the world.”

Shapiro finally does kick the habit–while losing weight and finding career and connubial bliss–only to discover that the second she’s let go of her long-term crutch, she’s already replaced it with another fixation. After banishing cigarettes, alcohol, dope, gum, and bread from her day-to-day existence, she conquers all her demons and survives deprivation overload. But relying religiously on Dr. Winters, she soon realizes that the only obsession she has left
to quit is him. . . .

Never has the battle to stem substance abuse been captured with such wit, sophisticated insight, and candor. Lighting Up is so compulsively readable, it’s addictive.

Good info, but disorganized 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Federal policy with regard to tobacco has undergone substantial change over the past thirty years. Fritschler and Hoefler have regularly updated their book, to include these new changes. Unfortunately for them, the mid- to late-1990s has seen a whole new series of proposals, which means a two year old book is already somewhat out of date.

Also, with each new edition, they've tried to maintain the general organization of their earlier editions. This means the fifth edition tells a somewhat disjointed story. The book jumps repeated from the 1960s to the 1970s to the 1980s and 1990s, then back again. Often, this leaves the reader confused as to exactly *when* a particular change occurred.

The book's strongest point is that it clearly illustrates the importance of the bureaucracy in making [not just implementing] public policy. Many policy texts present the mistaken impression that Congress makes policy and the bureaucracy implements policy. Fritschler and Hoefler do policy students a great service by demonstrating the importance of the federal rulemaking process, and the ability of an activist bureaucracy to make or motivate substantial changes in federal policy.

Editorial Review:

This brief, supplemental text is intended for introductory courses in American government, or intermediate level courses on public policy, public administration, and administrative law. This new 6th edition is a now part of the Paul S. Herrnson (Editor) series Real Politics in America. Recognizing the centrality and complexity of modern bureaucracy public policy making, Smoking and Politics helps the reader understand why under our system of government tobacco is a legal and thriving industry despite the harms caused by using its products.

A Smoker's Lament and Celebration All In One 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I haven't smoked a cigarette in over fifteen years, and never had the intense pull toward them that Emily Flake did, but I still loved her charming little book about the highs and lows of lighting up. Anyone who's struggled with any addiction or vice will appreciate her expertly drawn images of things like a "crispy ol' lung" and sense of twisted humor (when she tells her smoker readers they'll relate to the book and that it can help them, she pairs it with an image of a super-patched person with a pencil in their mouth quipping, "So, what, I can smoke the book? Is that what you're saying?").

She describes the trifecta of bourbon, prosciutto, and a cigarette as being "like angels are throwing a party in your mouth." Her artwork is especially wonderful when she details the horrors of smoking, the distorted mouth with "itty bitty lines that lipstick gets sucked up into." The sad images of women with no teeth and bloodshot eyes are tragically beautiful. Flake doesn't sugarcoat her own fears or the reality that smoking causes cancer; this is to her credit, since this truly is a love/hate/love letter. Flake's balancing act between her efforts to quit, and belief that smoking is essential to productivity and being herself is rendered wonderfully, along with a mini history of smoking "back in the day," when doctors endorsed smoking and ads read "Camels agree with your throat." Flake sums up the modern smoker by stating, "Today, we all know better. And we go ahead and do it anyway." If you're a non-smoker, like me, you'll be glad that you don't after getting through with this, and if you are, you'll appreciate all the more Flake's honesty, sometimes bloody drawings, and wit. And you just may feel a little bit guilty for hoping Flake continues smoking if it yields more work like this.

Editorial Review:

A brief encounter with an older woman in a coffee shop left Emily Flake swearing she would quit smoking when she turned twenty-nine. Only twenty-one at the time, she had years ahead of her to kick the habit. And then she turned twenty-eight, took a good, hard look in the mirror, and knew something had to be done.

These Things Ain’t Gonna Smoke Themselves is a hilarious, illustrated account of her love/hate relationship with cigarettes, from her first glorious drag to her not-so-final last puff, and everything she goes through to try to quit. It is a funny, candid exploration of the rise and fall of cigarettes, both within Emily’s own life and in society at large, tracing how smoking mutated from an encouraged form of recreation to what it is today—a nasty, unpardonable habit.

Quitting made very, very easy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If I had known that it was this easy to quit I would have read this book years ago. I really can't believe that I struggled with patches, gum etc for so many years when this simple, effective cure was available the whole time. Health Canada should distribute this title free of charge to every smoker in Canada.
Every smoker I know who has read this book is now a happy non-smoker. It really is that powerful and that easy.

It just plain works 5 out of 5 stars.

Like so many out there I had my doubts when it came to this book, but I figured I would give it a shot, can't hurt (I really had nothing to loose). I started reading it and you read while you smoke it, but the end, your last smoke tastes so gross you don't even finish it and you are cured. I read this book in one night and was a non-smoker when I woke up the next day. You can do the same (though you can read it over a longer period of time). No gimmicks, no scare tactics, just plain results. Health Canada really should endorse this book rather then endorsing those gums and patches that contain the drug you are trying to quit!

If you are a smoker and what to quit (who doesn't) READ THIS BOOK and you will become a non-smoker when you finish the book like so many before you did. This book is $15 less then the cost of two packs of smokes. Just buy it and you will quit.

Must read for elementary children!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Addiction Monster and the Square Cat is the first children's book by Letzgus McGinnis. It's geared toward children in the 5th grade and up and is told by the "sassy but lovable family cat."' It is a fictionalized version of the long struggle and ultimate death of the author's son from a multiple drug overdose. The story is heartwarming and explains about addiction to the younger set in terms that they can understand. The author even explains what "bingeing" and "alcoholism" is and she takes great pains to deliver a very sobering message to children without scaring them. She writes of other children too who had lofty goals and aspirations but never lived to realize them because drugs stole their future from them. This book should be required reading in all elementary schools because we have to teach them about drugs and addiction before they begin experimenting with same. I highly recommend this book, not only for the younger kids, but also for older kids and adults as well. It's the perfect book to read with your younger child also.

Editorial Review:

THE ADDICTION MONSTER AND THE SQUARE CAT informs children of the perils of drug abuse through a charming story told through the voice of Pumpkin, The Square Cat. Honest and real without being gruesome, SQUARE CAT can speak to juveniles from age 8-10 through the teenage years, and offer parents and teachers a launch-pad for discussion.

SMOKERS AND EX-SMOKERS MUST BUY THIS BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book got me to quit. I've tried quitting a hundred times. I smoked for 24 years since I was 14 years old and have never gone more than 2 months without a cigarette until now. I've been quit for 3 months as of today and I'm nowhere close to going back; I'm done with this disgusting habit. I've used a million different strategies to quit and I always went back to smoking...until I bought this book. Whenever I tried to quit before I would have a reason to quit that I thought would work. For example, I would quit because of my health, or my tennis game, or my love life. Whatever. Eventually, when faced with enormous cravings, these excuses didn't hold up to the power of nicotine. What this book does is give you 1440 reasons to quit, not just one or two reasons. Now, when I get a really bad craving where I think I'm going to bust, I just pick up 1440 Reasons To Quit Smoking and I realize what a dangerous and stupid habit it is. Now, if I was to ever decide to smoke again, it would just be suicide pure and simple. Also, go to quitnet.net, the best website in the world if you want to stop smoking.

Editorial Review:

Quit Smoking Now

Packed with inspirational messages -- one for each minute of the day and night -- this book will help you or your loved one quit smoking. It's a humorous, touching, and above all, convincing source of strength for soon-to-be-ex-smokers. This is the perfect gift for anyone who smokes.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I read this book after trying to quit smoking several times. I have tried hypnosis, other quit smoking books, the patch, the pill and even seminars. I have finished reading the book one week ago. I can truly say that I will never smoke again. Why? Especially because it has been only a week. Well, I just know I will NEVER go back to smoking. The book helped me go inward and build the strenght I needed, so I can say. Smoking is a dead subject for me.

After reading this book, I woke up. The book have me the self control to say NO. The book has a lot of assignment and it takes about 10 days to read this book. You can't read the book in a couple of days. The worse part was when the book instructed the reader to switch brands of cigarettes. The book really helped me go inward and realize that I have the power. It also helped me to HATE tobacco. I highly recommend this book for any smoker, who is still smoking and thinking about quitting.

Editorial Review:

In this book, I will give you all the tools necessary for you to become a nonsmoker for the rest of your life. Not only will this book help you end your addiction to nicotine without gaining weight, but it will also help you discover how to regain control of your life.

Most fail when attempting to quit smoking because they forget about dealing with the whole. Addiction is not only physical but also psychological. The book is structured unlike any other on the market. The Tao of Quitting Smoking is a spiritual approach to overcoming addiction that is accessible to people of all backgrounds.

This is not just another "quit smoking" book--it is about self-discovery, the key element to freeing yourself of the fear of failing one more time. With self-awareness and the knowledge presented in this book, you will have all the elements you need to take control of your actions and say goodbye to tobacco products forever.
