This book is very helpful giving quick guidance for the day. I see myself continually reading it for many years.

The road to serenity 5 out of 5 stars.

a great book to read a page of everyday. or read the 22 pages on detachment all at once.

A Little Harsh 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I find this meditation book a little harsh, although there are some strong insights. I prefer the other Al-Anon mediation books: Courage to Change: 1 Day at a Time in Al-Anon II or Hope for Today. Both of these newer books provide similar insights with a much kinder voice. If you are dealing with active addiction in your life, these books will help, even if you decide not to attend Al-Anon. Remember the three C's: "I didn't cause it; I can't control it; I can't cure it." (Paths to Recovery: Al-Anon's Steps, Traditions and Concepts, p. 14)

Focused on the wives of alcoholics 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I agree with the reviewer who found this book a little harsh. The advice is "old school" al-anon -- focused on the wife of an AA member. It's all about becoming more agreeable, not arguing with him, not complaining when he spends all his time in AA. If you are an adult child of an alcoholic, there is precious little advice for you here. You might want to check out HOPE FOR TODAY or COURAGE TO CHANGE.

I don't understand the critism 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I don't really understand the lengths I've seen people go to to discredit this book or the 12 steps in general. I am not a member of AA but I have a family member who was saved literally from the brink of death by NA. The changes in her and in her life have been nothing short of miraculous. If it was a 'cult' that brought about this change in her then I say Thank God for the 12-step cult, for it is truly a force of good.

Poor Substitute for Hazelden's 24 Hours a Day 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Fours years after its initial publication, I don't personally know of any AA member who still uses this as a daily reflection. I think AAWS just wanted to see if they could generate revenue by competing with the Hazelden 24 Hour A Day book. However, this turned out to be a weak effort.

Daily Reflections 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I believe this book is a "must have" for any recovering alcoholic or addict. It is really good to sit down each morning and read the thought of that day just to get your mind going on the right track. Very humbling, very thought provoking.

A Potpourri of Irrelevant Personal Opinion 1 out of 5 stars.

Let's talk about Quiet Time and prayer and meditation as early AAs practiced it. For one thing, they embraced Bible study, prayer, seeking God's guidance, and reading Christian literature. They also used Christian devotionals such as The Runner's Bible, the Upper Room, My Utmost for His Highest, and Daily Strength for Daily Needs.Good Morning!: Quiet Time, Morning Watch, Meditation, and Early A.A.. They also used a good many other "helpful books" which, as Wilson suggested could be based on suggestions from one's rabbi, minister, or priest Dr. Bob and His Library: A Major A.A. Spiritual Source; Anne Smith's Journal, 1933-1939: A.A.'s Principles of Success; The Good Book and the Big Book: A.A.'s Roots in the Bible (Bridge Builders Edition); and The James Club and the Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials. When Bill Wilson was in his deep depression after the Big Book was published, new meditation materials came from Sister Ignatia, Richmond Walker, Father Ralph Pfau, and finally in the form of the Little Red Book and the Twenty Four Hour Book. Then came the publishing flair--religious publishers, Hazelden, and others began pouring out meditation guides. And, about the time I entered AA, this "reflections" book was tendered to members in a meeting; and they almost uniformly voted it down as unnecessary. When A.A. finally published the book, it contained a mass of private opinions that talked about higher powers of a nonsense nature and A.A. meeting chatter. Does the book have value? Not if you are a fancier of Hazelden's 24 hour book. Not if you are an adherent to a religious denomination which can point you to the Bible, to the many quarterlies (the Upper Room still publishes), and the church prayer books. Bill Wilson's mentor Rev. Samuel M. Shoemaker made many suggestions about quiet time books also.New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A. (2d ed.). One could justifiably ask why A.A. ever decided to publish a book with such a wide variety of personal opinions, idolatrous suggestions, and irreligious nonsense. If someone wants atheist, humanist, New Age, New Thought, or Budhhist chants, there are plenty of resources which at least represent careful thought. For a broad look at the materials that contributed to early A.A. and its successes, seeMaking Known the Biblical History and Roots of Alcoholics Anonymous: A Sixteen-Year Research, Writing, Publishing, and Fact Dissemination Project, Third Edition. When I am dealing with A.A.'s own books, I much prefer the Big Book--which has specific meditation instructions in connection with Step Eleven. Or the history books like Pass It On and DR. BOB and the Good Oldtimers which explain that the early AAs simply studied the Bible and favored the Book of James, Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians 13.The Books Early AAs Read for Spiritual Growth, 7th Edition; That Amazing Grace: The Role of Clarence and Grace S. in Alcoholics Anonymous

Helpful perhaps to religious people 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Karen Casey has overcome some adversities in her life and she claims these are the 12 principles she has disccovered or, as she freely admits, rediscovered.

The problem I have with the book is that it is, in many ways, a non-denominational religious tract. While I don't hold religious people in disdain, I myself am not religious. Thus the endless references to literally putting yourself in the hands of a "Higher Power" and allowing your life to be guided by said power don't do anything for me. Her core advice is sufficient: the invitation to simply "have faith" I think will actually harm some people who will come to believe that they merely need to believe that they will somehow be guided to make the right decisions, rather than invest the will and energy to change their own lives.

I think Karen Casey does well at putting her message forth and that many people, especially those with religious beliefs, will find comfort, solace and encouragement in her words, even if I do not.

Editorial Review:

"There is never anything to change but our own perspective." Karen Casey

Thirty years ago best-selling author Karen Casey (Each Day a New Beginning) wandered into a support group and learned there was only one thing she could change--herself! She found a group of people who had adopted this concept--and she joined them. The result? Change so profound Casey has dedicated much of her life to teaching others about it.

Change Your Mind and Your Life Will Follow offers a dozen simple principles to live by. Each principle makes up a chapter. Each chapter includes meditation-style essays to help readers access peaceful, life-changing responses to just about any situation. It really is as simple as changing our minds. This little book will show you how.

Not Ready Yet 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is for alcoholic women who have not surrendered to the God of their understanding. The book holds out that women are "terminally unique" and can't really be helped by the big book of AA which was created by all men. The bottom line is that women are not terminally unique and the big book of AA is the only way to get sober. So, don't order this book, get the big book!

Excellent response. 4 out of 5 stars.

The book I ordered was listed as "Used - Good Condition". The book I received was a different version (not the one pictured on the website), dirty, heavily highlighted and written in. I would not trust this vendor, GreatBuyBooks, again.

Recover Workbook 5 out of 5 stars.

This workbook is FABULOUS!!! You don't even need the companion book, you can simply use it in conjunction with the AA approved Twelve and Twelve. I would DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this workbook!

Editorial Review:

Depens and extends understanding of the lessons taught in the popular trade book, A Woman's Way through the Twelve Steps. Designed to be used in conjunction with the trade book.

It's ok, what you are feeling 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very helpful to me. It validates all the range of emotions I'm experiencing. Being a widow can feel very lonely at times, and this book is helping me feel less alone, seeing that other women are going through a very similar process. I continue to read and re-read parts of it. I would highly recommend this book.

Bought this for a dear friend ... her favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When a dear friend recently lost her husband in an accident, I did not have personal experience to relate. I searched Amazon and picked four of the highly rated books to send her hoping at least one would be helpful to her. She enjoyed them all, but called me especially thanking me for this one. She said that, out of all the books, this one was the most practical, helpful book. She said it made her feel that her feelings were "normally abnormal" - meaning that they were very normal feelings for an abnormal, unplanned situation - she said it helped her feel that the immense emotions associated with her loss were not hers alone but were "normal" for such a very difficult situation and that others had survived the grieving process. I told her I would put her thoughts here so others who want to reach out to a friend in a similar situation would feel comfortable purchasing this book. God bless all who have lost their dear companions. Our prayers and thoughts reach out to you.

Editorial Review:

In this remarkably useful guide, widow, author, and therapist Genevieve Davis Ginsburg offers fellow widows-as well as their family and friends-sage advice for coping with the loss of a husband. From learning to travel and eat alone to creating new routines to surviving the holidays and anniversaries that reopen emotional wounds, Widow to Widow walks readers through the challenges of widowhood and encourages them on their path to building a new life.

Editorial Review:

Millions of people around the world spend a few moments each day in quiet reflection with a Karen Casey meditation book. The author's signature work, Each Day a New Beginning, was the first daily meditation book for recovering alcoholic women. When published in 1982, the book had no competition, yet many wondered whether a market existed for such a work. Twenty-five years and more than three million copies later, what became known as the little green book continues to sustain old and new readers alike. This limited edition features a new introduction by Casey, the original text, and original cover art. While many daily meditation books have been modeled after Each Day a New Beginning, no author can match Casey's reassuring guidance and gentle wisdom for sustaining lifelong recovery.

The Grandfather Volume of Subsequent A.A. Histories and Biographies 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I began to research A.A. history at the time of my visit to the A.A. International Convention in Seattle in 1990. Just prior to that, an old-timer on Maui had given me Not-God and Lois Remembers for starters. Also, just prior to that, I had read DR. BOB and the Good Oldtimers and others of A.A.'s own histories such as Pass It On and A.A. Comes of Age. I was ready to roll on A.A. and the Good Book,[[ASIN:1885803168]; Dr. Bob and His Library [[ASIN:1885803257]]; Anne Smith's Journal [[ASIN:1885803249]; The Oxford Group [[ASIN:1885803192]; Rev. Sam Shoemaker,[[ASIN:1885803273]; and the books early AAs Read [[ASIN:1885803265]];[[ASIN:1885803222 Good Morning!].

For me, Kurtz's Not-God was foundational. I used it for its footnotes. I used it to see what Kurtz had not covered. I used it to dig into the whole mysterious realm of higher powers and not-god-ness. And I still use it and quote it in my work today. I call it the grandfather volume because it prompted a real interest by many of us in doing the research and writing about history that A.A. just doesn't undertake. It also introduced us to the immense amount of history still to be unearthed. See Turning Point [[ASIN:1885803079]] ]It showed as much about what still needed to be done as about what Kurtz had done in the earlier dissertation work. Fairness dictates that the reader be aware of the immense amount of research, writing, and publication that has followed Kurtz's book. There are at least a dozen highly capable authors who cover A.A. history today. There are at least 10 that cover Bill Wilson's life. There are many who join Kurtz in surveying A.A. recovery statistics--in 1938 and now. When I published my first book, it was Ernest Kurtz who wrote the Foreword. Today I join him as one of the many who have appreciated the importance of learning, knowing, and applying A.A. history in the recovery scene today. Without Ernie's pioneer publication, most of us would probably still be sitting in meetings, listening to drunkalogs, and wondering where it all started.

Editorial Review:

The most complete history of A.A. ever written. Not-God contains anecdotes and excerpts from the diaries, correspondence, and occasional memoirs of A.A.'s early figures. A fascinating, fast-moving, and authoritative account of the discovery and development of the program and fellowship that we know today as Alcoholics Anonymous.

This is the best book I've read on the 12 Steps. It is such a refreshing perspective and a welcome addition to the Recovery Library of Bill W and Hazelton literature, which, for me, had become too familiar, unfortunately. This book is filled with insight, perspective, metaphors, hope and humor.
