I have known the author, Efrem Korngold, from the 60's. Efrem has always been involved in 'cutting edge' research and pragmatic applications regarding a wide spectrum of interests. Efrem's interest and commitment to health care comes out in his book, "Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine." As a result of reading his book, he and his wife have put the subject into terms that anyone can understand. Most important contribution however, is that the book gives the reader a "new" perspective on health care. By explaining the difference in models between Western medicine and Eastern medicine, Efrem and his wife are giving the reader invaluable information that they can now use in determining how they want to approach their own health care in the 21st century. Kudos to Efrem and his wife, Harriet Beinfield for a clear exposition of a topic that some might interpret as esoteric i.e. an alternative to western medicine.
Bart Ellis

Editorial Review:

Two of the foremost American educators and healers in the Chinese medical profession demystify Chinese medicine's centuries-odl approach to health. Combining Eastern traditions with Western sensibilities in a unique blend that is relevant today, BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH opens the door to a vast storehouse of knowledge that bridges the gap between mind and body, theory and practice, professional and self-care, East and West.

Editorial Review:

Learning anatomy requires more than pictures and labels; it requires a way "into" the subject, a means of making sense of what is being shown. Anatomy of the Moving Body addresses that need with a simple yet complete study of the body's complex system of bones, muscles, and joints and how they function. Beautifully illustrated with more than 100 3D images, the book contains 31 lectures that guide readers through this challenging interior landscape. Each part of the body is explained in brief, manageable sections, with components described singly or in small groups. The author doesn’t just name the muscles and bones but explains the terminology in lay language. Topics include the etymology of anatomical terms; origins and attachments of muscles and their related actions; discussion of major functional systems such as the pelvis, ankle, shoulder girdle, and hand; major landmarks and human topography; and structures relating to breathing and vocalization. This second edition features all-new illustrations that use a 3D digital model of the human anatomical form. The book's thoroughness, visual interest, and clear style make it ideal for students and teachers of the Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques as well as for practitioners of yoga, Pilates, martial arts, and dance.

Fantastic home resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has a rather unique layout that actually makes it easier to use than most similar books. The first part of the book focuses on symptoms. You look up your primary symptom, and then look to see if there are associated symptoms that match yours. If you have a match of symptoms then you read the different possible diagnosis for those symptoms and the distinguishing features of each diagnosis. The best way to illustrate how easy it is to use an example. Suppose you see some blood in your urine. You look up "Blood in the urine" and find that there are two subdivisions - with urinary difficulty or incontinence, without urinary difficulty or incontinence. If there is no urinary difficulty or incontinence then there are five possible diagnoses provided. Each of these five provides distinguishing features so you can easily figure out if you match one of them.

The second part of the book details the disorders provided in the symptom diagnosis portion. So, if you determined that you probably have an esophageal stricture you can look that disorder up and find out what it is, what causes it, prevention strategies, diagnostic techniques, how to treat it, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. With clear writing and lavish illustrations it provides a clear understanding of the problem. The John Hopkins Complete Home Guide to Symptoms & Remedies is a very highly recommended book to have handy in every home.

I am a home health nurse therefore this pocket drug guide is perfect. I do not have room to carry a full sized book in my bag not to mention the added weight.
It is easy to read and understand. The look up is so easy!
This is fantastic! I reccomend it to any nurse!

Good content but small font! 4 out of 5 stars.

I really found this pocket drug guide helpful. I'm a nursing student and I'm constantly looking up drugs that my patients are on. The only problem I have with the format is that the words are SO small! I'm no senior citizen and I can barely see those itty bitty words on the page! I've also found a lot of drugs missing from the pages--but what can I expect! Its a minaturized version! I'd reccomend this for students doing clinical...but don't make it your bible. You'll need another drug book if you want to get to know these drugs and their interactions for real.

Editorial Review:

Specifically geared towards patient-care, this instant-access pocket guide provides registered nurses with essential, up-to-the-minute information on the selection and administration of 1,000 commonly used medications. This resource is revised annually to reflect approval of new drugs, changes in usage of current drugs, and withdrawal of older ones. The 2009 edition includes 30 additional herbal supplements. Organized alphabetically by drug name.

the book for ACSM's Personal Trainer certification 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I don't know why I had so much trouble finding out what the primary resource was for the ACSM personal trainer cert was. But it is THIS book. Not the other books they mention on the website (they're a waste of money, in my opinion.) I searched a lot of places on the net and could not find one recommendation of a good way to study for this test. I have not taken this test but, I have bought this book and the other two books they recommend on their website, and my recommendation is to get this book alone. I have some background in health and fitness and I want to save time and money and do the minimum to past the test. That is why I recommend only this book. As far as I can tell, it is intended to be the source to study for that test. One of the OTHER two books they recommend on their website actually says in the beginning -- [this book is not intended to be used for the PT cert because this book was written before we finished the guidelines for the PT cert]. I read that and thought "what a rip off!!" So why mention it in your website? To make more money on selling books? Perhaps to give certain students an extra study material? I'm not sure. But I can say in my situation, I was not that happy, I was trying to be streamlined in my efforts and cost to prepare for the exam. Buying this book alone would have been sufficient for ME. (as best I can tell) I wish I had taken the test already so I could put out some additional useful information on studying for this test. I am not sure, but to me it seemed that there was little useful information out there about EXACTLY what to study. I am an adult with a job and family and things to do, and I don't want to be trying to read a bunch of idiotic supplemental books for a bozo PT exam. Just tell me what to study, I'll study it, give you the money for the test, and take the test and pass it. Is that too much to ask? I guess so. Anyway, for you people in a similar situation to me. Get THIS book and don't waste money on the guidelines for exercise testing and prescription, or the certification review (unless you feel you need extra material).
As for this book, its pretty boring, pretty dumbed-down. But it is very encompassing, clear in presentation and teaches someone how to be a personal trainer. So for that, its pretty cool.
