My friend brought this great book to school and quizzed all of our friends! We couldnt stop playing. Its little questions that are so much fun to answer. And the best thing is that they dont tell you who to be or what you are like magazines. Its pure fun. I brought it home the next night and used up about 20 pages with my own quizes. its SO much fun!!!
i cant wait to get my own

Great Gift for Preteens and Teens! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter LOVES this book! She carries it around with her wherever she goes, and quizzes her friends and teachers! Each person gets two pages of questions asked to them about their likes, dislikes, dreams, personality, opinions, etc...Everyone enjoys sharing things about themselves and tells her that this is a great book! They all ask where she got it! It would make an awesome gift for birthday or christmas! It's also fun to try and guess what other people's answers were, to see how well people know each other! It is a great conversation starter for a shy person!

Editorial Review:

The true story of thirteen women who took a risk on an expensive diamond necklace and, in the process, changed not only themselves but a community.

Four years ago, in Ventura, California, Jonell McLain saw a diamond necklace in a local jewelry store display window. The necklace aroused desire first, then a provocative question: Why are personal luxuries so plentiful yet accessible to so few? What if we shared what we desired? Several weeks, dozens of phone calls, and a leap of faith later, Jonell bought the necklace with twelve other women, with the goal of sharing it.

Part charm, part metaphor, part mirror, the necklace weaves in and out of each woman’s life, reflecting her past, defining her present, making promises for her future. Lending sparkle in surprising and unexpected ways, the necklace comes to mean something dramatically different to each of the thirteen women.
With vastly dissimilar histories and lives, the women show us how they transcended their individual personalities and politics to join together in an uncommon journey. What started as a quirky social experiment became something far richer and deeper, as the women transformed a symbol of exclusivity into a symbol of inclusiveness. They discovered that sharing the necklace among themselves was only the beginning; The more they shared with others, the more profound this experience–and experiment–became.

Original, resonant, and beautifully told, this book is an inspiring story about a necklace that became greater than the sum of its links, and about thirteen ordinary women who understood the power of possibility, who touched the lives of a community, and who together created one extraordinary experience.

Editorial Review:

Ann Patchett and the late Lucy Grealy met in college in 1981, and, after enrolling in the Iowa Writer's Workshop, began a friendship that would be as defining to both of their lives as their work. In Grealy's critically acclaimed memior, Autobiography of a Face, she wrote about losing part of her jaw to childhood cancer, years of chemotherapy and radiation, and endless reconstructive surgeries. In Truth & Beauty, the story isn't Lucy's life or Ann's life, but the parts of their lives they shared. This is a portrait of unwavering commitment that spans twenty years, from the long winters of the Midwest, to surgical wards, to book parties in New York. Through love, fame, drugs, and despair, this is what it means to be part of two lives that are intertwined ... and what happens when one is left behind.

This is a tender, brutal book about loving the person we cannot save. It is about loyalty, and being lifted up by the sheer effervescence of someone who knew how to live life to the fullest.

    Editorial Review:

Friends and life. Life and friends. The two are so tightly interwoven it's impossible to imagine one being remotely worthwhile without the other. As Bradley Trevor Greive points out, "There are very few truly solitary creatures on this planet. And most of them have serious personal hygiene issues." What makes friends so special? What does our choice of friends say about us? What sparks the best friendships and keeps them burning? In Friends to the End: The True Value of Friendship, BTG uses his trademark witty narrative illustrated with irresistible animal photos to explore the daily magic we experience through our friends. Best described as a cross between his famously successful Dear Mom and The Blue Day Book, Friends to the End examines themes such as why we can't live without friends, how great friendships grow from humble beginnings, how to identify different types of friendship, what to do when good friends turn bad, and why it's all so worthwhile.

"When I think back to all the really great or the horrendously bad times in my life," says BTG, "I can't help but think about how my friends made the former all the more enjoyable and the latter at least survivable. I want this book to help people appreciate friendship for all it is and all it can be."Friends to the End promises to have the same cultural impact achieved by his previous books. His modern classics The Blue Day Book and Dear Mom have been New York Times best-sellers and made the author a household name in more than 35 countries. BTG's seven previous volumes have sold more than seven million copies worldwide.

Stop Being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE will guide you to: * Authentically empower yourself in your romantic relationships * Become your own best friend * Have authentic communication * Learn how to never settle again * Take the manipulative games out of your relationships * Attract a partner that is a fantastic match for you * Learn how to spiritually evolve in a Sacred Relationship * End negative patterns in your relationship * Learn 50 reasons to stay in a relationship * Learn 50 reasons to leave skid marks * Uproot negative programming that has kept you stuck in String Along misery * Learn what it takes to finally get it right In her groundbreaking book Stop Being the String Along, Barbara Rose states: "Give me ten minutes and I can tell you if you are destined to being a string along or THE ONE for the rest of your life!" Rose does this by identifying the "string along warning signs." We all have string along messages thrown onto us that have been imprinted within our subconscious minds. It is in identifying them, and bringing them out into our conscious awareness that turns a string along into THE ONE. You can know every trick in the book about catching someone, subtlety coercing them, and playing a host of games to get what you want, but if you are subconsciously being the string along you will never succeed in a relationship, and even if you do get married, it will most likely not last! The great news is that now you can easily uncover the old string along programming and create authentic, thriving relationship success. If you are not doing as well in your relationship as you would like, you will have to uproot your subconscious string along messages. Unfortunately your current string along messages will tend to stay with you for the rest of your life, unless you identify and revise them, and that's exactly what you will do with the help of this extraordinary book. According to Barbara Rose, it's simple. If you think like THE ONE thinks and do what THE ONE does, chances are you'll be THE ONE too!

"A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside" (A.A. Milne)

If you've never used your superior powers of deductive reasoning to determine that the effects of a fudge brownie à la mode can be counteracted by a diet drink at the same meal, then chances are that:

    1. You're not of the feminine persuasion
    2. You don't meet your girlfriends for lunch on a regular basis
    3. You may not appreciate this picture book.

This is a compact and delightful gift book expressly created for those special women who know you better than you know yourself. It contains more than forty adorable, full color photographs of animals, each with a "girlfriend-appropriate" phrase, quote or saying, ranging from PMS to Winnie the Pooh (see above).

Recommended as a "just because" gift for the ladies of your posse who know when it's better to tell you the truth up front, and when to hedge their bets a little. Better yet, send it with a personal note thanking them for always watching your back.

"The friend who holds your hand and says the wrong thing is made of dearer stuff than the one who stays away" (Barbara Kingsolver)

    Amanda Richards, September 6, 2008

    Editorial Review:

Some things only girlfriends understand. Girlfriends understand that a "balanced" meal can include a diet drink and a fudge brownie ala mode. Girlfriends understand not to trust dressing room mirrors or bathroom scales; and they understand we need each other as mirrors, cushions, cheering squads, and ever-ready chocolate co-conspirators. This book is for all those great, giving girlfriends--the ones whose ears, closets, refrigerators, and hearts are always open. A delightful gift book that pairs full-color animal photos perfectly with thoughtful and funny sentiments and quotes.

A view of the great resilience of children 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I picked this book up yesterday around 4 o'clock and by 10pm I had finished it- take that as a testament to how immersive this book is.
Whistling in the Dark is the first work by Lesley Kagen; a general fiction book that looks at the resilience and courage of children. Elven year old Sally is the voice of the novel; her sister Troo (ten months younger) is her constant companion. The girls have lost their Daddy recently and now their Mom is going to the hospital to take her gallbladder out but they fear she may not return. Troo and Sally are left under their Step father Hall & oldest Sister Nelly's care but Hall would rather drink and Nelly is in love and preoccupied. The girls are left mostly to their own devices- horrifying to us now but the novel is set in 1959- a time when neighhborhoods were communities and everyone had an eye out for one another. The problem is that in the neighborhood there is a predator who murders & molests little girls.... Sally thinks that she knows who he is ... and that she is next.
This is the premise of the novel and frankly it's not a new idea and could have gone horribly wrong but it doesn't. The author does a beautiful job of making her characters come to life from the most minor (story-wise) folks in the neighborhood all the way done to the girls. The voice of Sally is very realistic and impressive. While there are dark themes and horrible things occurring they do not overpower the story at all. The girls transcend this in that beautiful resiliant way children do and this is so well portrayed that is more a book of hope & light than anything else.
I loved, loved, loved this book so very much...the characters in the book were so real and dear to me that I wish I could go live with them and I also wish I had read slower so I could have spent more time with them. I reccomend this novel to absolutely everyone!

    Editorial Review:

It was the summer on Vliet Street when we all started locking our doors...

Sally O'Malley made a promise to her daddy before he died. She swore she'd look after her sister, Troo. Keep her safe. But like her Granny always said-actions speak louder than words. Now, during the summer of 1959, the girls' mother is hospitalized, their stepfather has abandoned them for a six pack, and their big sister, Nell, is too busy making out with her boyfriend to notice that Sally and Troo are on the Loose. And so is a murderer and molester.

Highly imaginative Sally is pretty sure of two things. Who the killer is. And that she's next on his list. Now she has no choice but to protect herself and Troo as best she can, relying on her own courage and the kindness of her neighbors.
