Great gift! 5 out of 5 stars.

Gottman is a genius when it comes to male/female relationships. I purchased this books as a gift for my friend when she found out she was expecting. Unfortunately, we didn't learn of Gottman's writing until after our children were born and we were in marital counseling. I'm hoping this book will help her be better prepared for the permanent changes that happen when adding a baby into a marriage. Maybe they can save the money on counseling :-)

Editorial Review:

Dating Rocks is a 240 page dating manifesto that outlines everything a woman should do to find, date and keep a man -- from being aware of her physical appearance to honing her listening skills.

The best part of this book is Nakamoto’s wit as he helps the reader along. As a former Dale Carnegie instructor, personal development trainer, and international tour director, Nakamoto knows how to tell a story. There’s a rather amusing tale of how he and a friend had sworn off all women as gold-diggers since all of the women they encountered at an upscale nightclub would only go out with them once. A friend of theirs tells them, "The problem isn’t that these women are gold-diggers. It’s that you guys unfortunately can’t afford them." Lesson to be learned from such wise words: don’t try to place the blame for your lousy love life on someone or something else; be proactive, take control of your love life, and good things will follow.

The book follows a rigid but successful format. Each chapter begins with a nifty quote from a major author or artist, past or present. For instance, Chapter 13 titled "Competition," opens with a quote from Margaret Halsey: "The great disadvantage of being in a rat race is that it is humiliating. The competitors in a rat race are by definition rodents." An honest male prospective that summarizes what is to be learned in the chapter follows these quotes. Nakamoto also includes an anecdote from his life such as the email he received from a woman complaining about an aspect of her dating life, followed by a list of steps on how to successfully accomplish whatever the theme of the chapter happens to be.

Nakamoto, is not new to the "how to catch a man arena." His previous book, Men are like Fish: Everything a Woman Needs to Know about Catching a Man, was a funny, intelligent look at the dating scene with tips on how to not only initiate a great relationship but enhance the one you are in. In his latest book he offers an honest and refreshing male perspective that any woman can use if she finds herself in a dating slump.

Unlike many of the dating books out there, he doesn’t send the message that women should wait for a man to decide what he wants to do about being together but instead he teaches women how to be proactive when it comes to their love life. He tells them to put themselves first -- their needs, wants, and desires. Ladies, you can’t get any better advice than that.

In Dating Rocks you will find no catchy phrases and no antiquated ideals, just good solid advice (that may or may not net you a man), but along the way will provide you with a great deal of fun, insight and personal growth.

An important resource for determining if an abusive man can change 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Communication specialist Patricia Evans explores the issue of verbal abuse in heterosexual relationships. She builds on her previous work in The Verbally Abusive Relationship and Controlling People by posing the question, "Can a verbally abusive man really change?" What is particularly startling about verbal abuse, Evans explains, is that in almost every case the abuser feels that he is the one being attacked. (Rarely, abusers are female, but such cases aren't discussed in this book.) Getting him to own up to his damaging behavior is not easy. Motivating him to change is even more difficult. Evans supplies tools you can use to determine if your partner is likely to change and a program that can help him do so, if you think he can alter his abusive behavior. Evans uses her book as a pulpit to preach against unqualified therapists, verbal abuse in all its forms and the male-dominated society that has made such abuse possible. But, her cause is just, and we recommend this important resource to anyone who is struggling to survive an abusive relationship and to therapists who are seeking solid information.

Editorial Review:

From the world's most-acclaimed expert on verbal abuse comes the first book that answers the question foremost in every woman's mind: can he really change? Combining practical applications with the latest clinical research with the trademark support and assurance of Evans, "The Verbally Abusive Man: Can He change?" shows victims of verbal abuse how to empower themselves, improve their relationships, and change their lives for the better.

Editorial Review:

The focus of this book is sex and the central position it occupies within marriage and relationships. Sex for pleasure is an end in itself. But Kosher Sex is the fire of sexual attraction that creates union in the bedroom and closeness and intimacy     in life.

Kosher Sex will change how you view, discuss, and approach sex. With humor, sensitivity, respect, and honesty, Rabbi Boteach touches on all the modern questions concerning this eternally interesting topic.

Kosher Sex pioneers a new approach to sex, marriage, and personal relationships that draws on traditional Jewish wisdom. Rabbi Boteach uses his experience counseling individuals and couples to break down sexual taboos and openly discuss the meanings, emotions, and the hidden power of sex.

In an unique anecdotal style, Rabbi Boteach illustrates each and every point, using real couples who have discovered the joys of "kosher sex"--sex based on love, trust, and real intimacy. He profiles the two most common types of couples--best friends and passionate lovers--and suggests ways of synthesizing the best that each type has to offer. Rabbi Boteach also provides advice for singles on finding the right partner, for individuals both sure and unsure about taking their long-term relationship to the next level, and for married couples who may be experiencing problems in their sex life. At a time when three out of every five marriages fail, Kosher Sex will have an astonishing and positive impact.

Editorial Review:

5 Star Highest Rating: An exceptional book

Most single women have experienced the sinking feeling of fishing for a date from someone special without receiving so much as a nibble. It is enough to make women wonder if there is something wrong with their bait.

Steve Nakamoto, a former Dale Carnegie instructor, personal development trainer, and professional tour director understands these feelings. He has written an intelligent, funny, and wise book for women who are looking to catch a guy---hook, line, and sinker. In this entertaining look at relationships, he compares men to fish who are secretly longing to be caught. Women, on the other hand, are wily yet compassionate anglers looking to reel in the big one.

Men Are Like Fish will take readers on a fact-packed fishing trip where they will learn tips on how to initiate great relationships or enhance the ones they already have. The book is sweetly old-fashioned, yet wickedly on target. Nakamoto has also sprinkled zippy cartoons/illustrations and unusually helpful quotes throughout the book.

While the title might imply a single-minded effort to drag an unsuspecting man into the net, the book is actually somewhat Zenlike. It will help women to improve their self-images, broaden their interests, and accentuate the unique qualities they possess that will naturally draw good relationships to them. Nakamoto also spends a good deal of time discussing the end of relationships. He shows women how to let go gracefully, with as little pain as possible, so that they can continue to grow without harboring bitterness. He uses several examples from his own life, sharing many of his triumphs and failures with a good-natured sense of humor.

Nakamoto shares one especially funny story about a tight jeans contest where he lost a shapely girlfriend/contestant to judge Clint Eastwood. He writes, I consoled myself with the thought that Deanna must have had a tough choice: Clint Eastwood (People Weekly s 2001 #2 most popular screen actor of all time) or Steve Nakamoto? It could have gone either way, right?

Nakamoto also shares good, solid advice. One especially helpful area is Favorite Fishing Holes: 101 Hot Spots Where the Big Ones Are Biting. It consists of a list of fun and inexpensive activities and places to explore that are bound to be interesting, even if they do not spark a new love affair. Among the many activities that Nakamoto recommends are going to art gallery openings, visiting wineries for wine tasting and tours, and taking city tours or day trips in one s own city or in a nearby town.

Nakamoto does not guarantee eternal love for readers. However, both single women looking for that perfect catch and those seeking to recapture the romance of an exciting relationship will find great value here. Men Are Like Fish is guaranteed to give even the most jaded and discouraged romantic angler a new, more joyful perspective on the oldest sport in the world. --- Reviewed by Kathleen Youman

Derived from Esquire’s popular feature, this wildly entertaining, bestselling men’s manual to life in the 21st century is revised, expanded, and with color added! It now offers 668 rules in all (91 of them new to this edition), providing even more lighthearted reading, manly musings, and, occasionally, good advice. Accompanied by full-color illustrations throughout, these rules are guaranteed to set a guy straight. Here is what guys need to live by:

Rule number 2: When someone says he is “pumped” about something, it usually means he’s about to do something stupid.

Rule number 36: No matter how hard you practice, you cannot say the phrase, “Yeah, right” without sounding sarcastic.

Rule number 45: For the last time, no goddamn Speedos.

Rule number 108: The road to hell is not paved with good intentions. The road to hell is paved with smooth-jazz CDs, herbal teas, John Tesh specials, and low-fat cheese.

Rule number 154: Properly made, leftover chili gets better and better every day until the fourth day, at which point it begins its slow decline.

Rule number 59: The study of inert gases is best left to professionals.

Rule number 38: When it comes to luggage, men don’t pull.

Editorial Review:

Drawing from his own pastoral experience as a priest and bishop before he became Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla has produced a remarkably eloquent and resourceful defense of Catholic tradition in the sphere of family life and sexual morality. He writes in the conviction that science--biology, psychology, sociology--can provide valuable information on particular aspects of relations between the sexes, but that a full understanding can be obtained only by study of the human person as a whole. Central to his argument is the contrast between the personalistic and the utilitarian views of marriage and of sexual relations. The former views marriage as an interpersonal relationship, in which the well-being and self-realization of each partner are of overriding importance to the other. It is only within this framework that the full purpose of marriage can be realized. The alternative, utilitarian view, according to which a sexual partner is an object for use, holds no possibility of fulfillment and happiness. Wojtyla argues that divorce, artificial methods of birth control, adultery (pre-marital sex), and sexual perversions are all in various ways incompatible with the personalistic view of the sexual self-realization of the human person.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the book is that Wojtyla appeals throughout to ordinary, human experience, logically examined. He draws support for his views on the proper gratification of sexual needs, on birth control, and on other matters, from the findings of physiologists and psychologists. His conclusions coincide with the traditional teachings of the Church, which invoke scriptural authority. His approach ensures that non-Christians also can consider his arguments on their own merits.

What an excellent little guide! If you want a refresher or just want the gist of this book, this one will totally do that for you. I think I prefer to read things this way. It's quicker and more to the point. I also suggest Dating Sense: The Practical Way to Meet, Date and Marry the Right Person.

Short and sweet. 5 out of 5 stars.

This one really gets to the point and quick. I think it's probably as effective as the larger paperbag. The point is: If he likes you, you will know it. IF not, you should know it. Pretty good info. Also suggest: How To Be Wanted: Use the Law of Attraction to Date the Man You Most Desire and Live the Life You Deserve.
