Editorial Review:

Expanding on a landmark cover story in Fortune, a top journalist debunks the myths of exceptional performance.

One of the most popular Fortune articles in many years was a cover story called “What It Takes to Be Great.” Geoff Colvin offered new evidence that top performers in any field--from Tiger Woods and Winston Churchill to Warren Buffett and Jack Welch--are not determined by their inborn talents. Greatness doesn’t come from DNA but from practice and perseverance honed over decades.

And not just plain old hard work, like your grandmother might have advocated, but a very specific kind of work. The key is how you practice, how you analyze the results of your progress and learn from your mistakes, that enables you to achieve greatness.

Now Colvin has expanded his article with much more scientific background and real-world examples. He shows that the skills of business—negotiating deals, evaluating financial statements, and all the rest—obey the principles that lead to greatness, so that anyone can get better at them with the right kind of effort. Even the hardest decisions and interactions can be systematically improved.

This new mind-set, combined with Colvin’s practical advice, will change the way you think about your job and career—and will inspire you to achieve more in all you do.

In the process... 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was recommended by a friend who had brain surgery. I am trying to recover from a traumatic brain injury. This book, though very technical, has given me practical ways to help change areas of my thinking and move forward with my healing.
I highly recommend this book for recovering brain injured patients, drug addicts, thinking disorders, or if you just need to adjust your thinking.
It also explains the importance of the bonding processes in children. Great book for teachers and/or parents.

Do you have influence? 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Originally published in 1936, How to Win Friends and Influence People is the archetype of the practical human relations handbook. It is based on courses in public speaking that had been taught in adult education by Dale Carnegie since 1912 (and to put to rest a popular assumption, he was no relation to the magnate Andrew Carnegie). It is an unusual little book, written in a highly personalized, colloquial style that is reminiscent of a lecture. What's separates this book from others that have come and gone since the 1930s is it's timeless. It is written with a certain earnestness: Carnegie was a big believer in sincerity when it came to dealing with other people. As you read it, you'll find it incredible how easily you relate to the suggestions of a man that penned them more than 70 years ago.

The book opens with fundamental techniques for dealing with people, such as refraining from criticism, expressing sincere appreciation, making people like you by smiling, remembering names, and being a good listener. Final sections describe approaches for persuading people to your way of thinking and how to change people without causing offense or resentment. These positive principles are stated succinctly and illustrated with pertinent, if occasionally outmoded, anecdotes.

While critics have charged that Carnegie emphasized good manners and friendliness over proficiency, the author clearly states that his target audience is competent individuals who are less than successful because they lack people skills, a group that would be well served by his sensible guidance. This book was designed with professionals in mind, and designed to help professional people do better in business by helping them make social contacts and improve their speaking skills. I know that few books have helped me in my career as much as this one.

Another book I very strongly recommend because it's an incredible pairing to Carnegie that has helped me immensely is The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book

An Exceptional Book 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

In browsing my book shelf I came upon and then found myself rereading this incredibly simple yet profound book. The principles and ideas Stephen writes about are truly ways to discover how to live your life as the person you want to be. I especially found the section where Stephen writes about how powerful unexamined attitudes and perceptions influence how I react toward situations and others. Once I started looking at my predetermined thoughts...those same situations became less mundane and irritating. My experiences became more authentic, meaningful and enjoyable instantaneously. Stephen writes of this as a "paradigm shift", where our attitudes and behaviors, left unexamined, shape how we feel and act in our life in mechanical patterns.

Two authors that have also inspired and ignited my passion for living a magnificent life are Ariel & Shya Kane. The Kanes works: "Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment", "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life", "How to Create a Magical Relationship" and their internet radio show "Being Here" on Voiceamerica.com are all indispensable sources I turn to in supporting my well-being in all areas of my life. I highly recommend the Kanes and Stephen Covey classic, timeless book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People."

Editorial Review:

Covey's revolutionary program, based on his national bestselling book, is designed to break patterns of self-defeating behavior and replace old patterns with a principle-centered approach to problem-solving. 4 cassettes.

Needs editing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My wife thoughtfully purchased this book for me. I had read about it and was very excited to dive right in. Unfortunately I ended up really having to convince myself to finish it, as it became redundant fairly quickly. Sacks presents (too) many case studies regarding music and the brain, but the presentation feels random and somewhat unfocused. Had his editor suggested grouping the studies by themes or urged Sacks to provide more neurological background information it perhaps would have better kept my attention. It felt as if the reader had to do a lot of work to pull together some of the concepts.

As for the perceived redundancy, I kept waiting for the conclusion or wrap-up that would provide the overarching theme to all the seemingly disconnected patient stories, but to no avail. It almost felt as if the stories were starting to repeat themselves but with different patient names. The length too felt far too long, almost as if everything presented in the first half were just recycled for the second. Additionally, the writing style is very informal and easy to digest, which is not necessarily a positive. The book begins to feel as if the author were afraid to intelligently, academically, and thoroughly dissect the subject matter for fear of alienating too many readers. The result is a glossy feeling, like you're reading the U.S.A. Today version of something that could have really offered some insightful perspectives.

Promising topic, but presented without much organization, background information, or conclusion. I'm surprised that an editor would allow such breadth to be published without any true depth.

Bunch of Rubbish 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book many years ago when our youngest who is now 19 was 3 or 4. It is the typical modern psycho-babble about trying to understand your kids etc. Useless trash. You are much better off going with John Rosemond's "Six Point Plan to Raising Happy Healthy Children". Much more effective tools and practical.
We have 7 children and Rosemond's books were very helpful. If I would have tried to follow the advise in this book, I would have had a nervous breakdown by now.

A thought provoking book 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be very thought provoking and need to read it again and do the exercises to get more benefit from it. It's so easy to interact with my kids 'as usual' - the good suggestions in the book don't always come naturally but when I use them they seem to work quite well.

for desperate moms 5 out of 5 stars.

This is by far the best parenting books I have read. It offers many insights and ready-to-use techniques. It's not like many parenting books with big concepts, which we all know but don't know how to apply. It is full of vivid daily examples with specific ideas to help you respond to your child more effectively. I cannot recommend this book more than enough!
