She should practice what she preaches 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 16 people found this review helpful.

If I could give no stars, I would. I'm putting this review on each of Louise Hay's titles to warn people who fall into believing that this is a caring, compassionate person. I met her recently at an event and was about to compliment her on one of the books her company publishes that Dr. Dyer wrote for children. Louise Hay was so incredibly rude to me before I even got to open my mouth that I was shocked. The woman seemed to be only about capitalism, power and ego and, though I had been a previous customer of her publishing company, I will NEVER purchase anything by them again nor will I recommend them. I will not give money to someone so ill-behaved, let alone someone who's telling others to be nice when they haven't learned that lesson themselves. Louise Hay, I hope someone on your team shares this with you. You should be ashamed of yourself for being so nasty!

By contrast, I have dealt with the people at Sound's True a zillion times and all of them are as nice as can be and behave in accordance with their products. I spoke with their people at the same event (and others before it) and they were all lovely.

And, no, I do not work for or am in any way compensated by Sound's True. I simply people should know the truth about who practices what they preach and who doesn't. In my opinion, Hay's behavior was one step down from Cruella De Ville. If you're shocked reading that, imagine how shocked I was experiencing it from her.

Quite Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book was extremely disappointing. I was very excited about it. I've had times in my life when I KNOW the Lord has worked and I was hoping this book would help me be more in tune to the Lord's work in my life and help me see specific situations I may have missed. What a joke!!!

The book seems to be more of a manual for how to use coincidences to do what you want and feel good about it. Many of the examples of "God Winks" lead people to do things that our Lord would not approve of (one example being divorce).

But my biggest complaint is that the vast majority of the author's examples of "God Winks" comes from the rich and famous. I got the impression that the author apparently can not even relate to or understand the work of God in the average person's life. This mistake on the author's part could lead to a reader becoming hopeless rather than hopeful that the True God is working in their life.

I did not come away from the reading believing that the author knew and understood the True God of the Bible, though I did gain some benefit from reading the book. Reading it did remind me that God does work in my life in a personal way and that I need to always be looking for that work - and more importantly that I need to acknowledge, cherish and remember that work.

I would like to share two instances that I know God worked in my life. One could be considered a "coincidence" but the other is just God's work. And both are simple, average examples of the Lord working in an ordinary person's life. They do not describe any life-changing events, but they are God's work non-the-less.

1) My car - a Subaru Justy - was doing it's job getting my family of 5 around (two in car seats!). We joked about it being the clown car because we could all squeeze in and it looked funny; all of us piling out. The driver's side seat belt broke. We called to find out how much it would cost to fix and discovered that we really, really could not afford it, but what else could we do? Days later we received a letter in the mail informing us that the seat belts had been recalled and we could have it repaired at a dealership for free. What a BLESSING! This seems like a coincidence (or a "God Wink") but I took it for what it was....the Lord watching over us and taking care of our needs.

2) Shortly before my grandfather died we made a trip to visit him. He was my favorite person in the world. The whole time we were there (as other times before) I would get on to my boys for being loud and rambuctious. My grandfather would sit in his chair in the living room and seemed to be sleeping. He was very frail. I was afraid that my boys would bother him. At one point the boys came bouncing loudly into the room. As I was about to get on to them and scold them for being loud I looked over at my grandfather. He was sitting in his chair laughing! He was wasting away at the end of his life, yet he was enjoying his grandsons' romping around his house. That was pure gold to me. You can't call this a coincidence. You could call it a "God Wink", but after reading Rushnell's book I have an aversion to that term. God did move and speak into my life, but it was absolutely nothing like what Rushnell describes in his book.

I could give many more boring examples of how God has worked in my ordinary life. They probably wouldn't be as appealing as Rushnell's examples because they weren't coincidences on my path to being rich and famous. But they are real examples of a real God working in an ordinary person's life. And they didn't lead me to do something that God would not approve of, quite the opposite. All of the personal experiences I've had with God working in my life have led me away from sin and toward God.

All that to say that if you believe in the God of the Bible don't waste your time reading this book. Instead spend the time really thinking on and praying about how the Lord has worked in your life. Thank Him for it and rejoice!

Editorial Review:

It is not by accident that you just picked up When God Winks. Whether you call it synchronicity or coincidence, what brought you to this book today is worth remembering. In fact, you may have suspected all along that there is more to coincidence than meets the eye. These seemingly random events are actually signposts that can help you successfully navigate your career, relationships, and interests. SQuire Rushnell shows us that by recognizing our "God Winks," we can use the untapped power of coincidence to vastly improve our lives.

The author applies his compelling theory as to why coincidences exist to fascinating stories in history, sports, medicine, and relationships involving both everyday and famous people including Barbra Streisand, Charles Schulz, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Costner, Mark Twain, and Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

Warm thoughts for self and others 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I hesitated to buy this book because I thought it might be "too Buddhist" or too sentimental. Do not be deterred by these reasons. I have treasured it, recommended it, and as a minister leant it out with great joy to people from all walks of life, rich and poor, highly literate and plain-spoken. It is one of those books that cuts through a lot of folderol and gets to the inmost heart, giving folks something nourishing and simple like a good breakfast for the soul.

Editorial Review:

Throughout our lives we long to love ourselves more deeply and find a greater sense of connection with others. Our fear of intimacy—both with others and with ourselves—creates feelings of pain and longing. But these feelings can awaken in us the desire for freedom and the willingness to take up the spiritual path. In this inspiring book, Sharon Salzberg, one of America's leading spiritual teachers, shows us how the Buddhist path of lovingkindness can help us discover the radiant, joyful heart within each of us. This practice of lovingkindness is revolutionary because it has the power to radically change our lives, helping us cultivate true happiness in ourselves and genuine compassion for others. The author draws on simple Buddhist teachings, wisdom stories from various traditions, guided meditation practices, and her own experience from twenty-five years of practice and teaching to illustrate how each one of us can cultivate love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

Editorial Review:

Judge Judy has heard enough. As a family court judge in New York City and now in her successful TV courtroom show, she has listened to thousands of excuses, complaints, and tales of woe from women of every background, and she's ready to rule. Women, she states with her trademark frankness, need to wise up, stop subjugating who they are, and stop making stupid decisions in the name of love. They hide their talents and opinions so they won't offend. They tiptoe through life letting others take credit for their ideas because they would rather be liked than respected. They spend their lives trying to please everyone but them-selves, and then they wonder why they feel so frustrated and unfulfilled.

Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever presents Judge Judy's ten hard and true lessons for happiness:

  1. Beauty fades, dumb is forever.

  2. Don't crawl when you can fly.

  3. What goes up must come down.

  4. Denial is a river in Egypt.

  5. Master the game--then play it.

  6. You're the trunk of the tree.

  7. You can't teach the bull to dance.

  8. Failure doesn't build character.

  9. Letting go is half the fun.

  10. You can be the hero of your own story.

Thank God for this book! These techniques are timeless! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I went to assertive training more than 25 years ago, and the early edition of this book was what they used. The techniques are timeless. Thank God I learned these skills before I got married! They have added so much to our relationship (25 years and going strong!). Thank God I learned these skills before I had to deal with insurance companies about my long term illness. These techniques work great with insurance companies! Especially the broken record technique. It is amazing how few "no"s an insurance rep has! I have read almost all books on the subject (I have my masters in communication), and this is still the best one out there! It can make your life happier! These skills have been making my life better for years! Hope you buy it, and it does the same for you!

If you're reading this review, you probably suspect that you have a problem with assertiveness, so take the first step towards improving your life by purchasing this book. If you have a problem saying no to unreasonable requests, if your legitimate and reasonable requests for what you need are repeatedly denied, ignored, or trivialized, if you feel surrounded by manipulative, controlling people, if you have been in a long-term verbally abusive relationship, if you are easily intimidated by aggressive people, or even if you're just mildly curious, this book will be invaluable to you. It's not just a quick read, though. It has thought-provoking exercises to help you determine why you have difficulty asserting yourself as well as practice exercises to prepare you to be assertive when the need arises. Even if you don't think you need improvement, this book is a great resource on communication.

Very good at distinguishing 'assertive' from 'aggessive' 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book helped me identify my aggressive behaviors that weren't beneficial and find alternative ways to be assertive. It has helped me consider others without sacrificing my needs.

Editorial Review:

The thirtieth anniversary (eighth) edition of the most widely recommended assertiveness training book helps readers step-by-step to develop more effective self-expression. Emphasizes equal-relationship assertiveness -- not the all-too-common "me-first" attitude. Packed with detailed procedures, examples, and exercises. The eighth edition is completely revised and updated, and includes new material on what it means to be assertive in the 21st century, living in a multicultural society, making the decision to express yourself assertively, appropriate anger expression, and treatment for social anxiety and phobia.

With over one-and-a-quarter million copies sold, YOUR PERFECT RIGHT ranked 5th among all self-help books in a national survey of psychologists, as reported in AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PSYCHOTHERAPY, PSYCHOLOGY TODAY, and THE NEW YORK TIMES. It ranked 12th among the "best self-help books" in a national survey reported in THE AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO SELF-HELP BOOKS (1994).

Don't buy this book, if you already have main text. It is not worth it.

This workbook is filled with awareness exercises that can help a person immensely with their healing process. The exercises are designed to find limiting beliefs so you can create affirmations to clear the past and welcome the future you want. You can also do the exercises more than once and find new insights. I require this book for all my Heal Your Life training students.

Great resource for healing! 4 out of 5 stars.

Having read Louise Hay's book, "You Can Heal Your Life", I found this a natural extension and have benefitted from doind the written assignments. I think if used alone, it may not be enough, though. She is more indepth in the other book, but this one breaks it down nicely, and is a very user freindly format. Her writing has been a catharsis for much personal healing in my life.

Editorial Review:

This companion workbook to You Can Heal Your Life includes valuable writing exercises that teach you how to connect with your higher self.
