Nonsensical and Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After the excellent reviews I read on Amazon, I was very excited to get this book. However, I was very disappointed, as it is stream of consciousness ramblings that often don't make any sense. To be sure, there are a few riveting excerpts throughout the book, but most of it consists of tangents unrelated to Chernobyl. I was expecting accounts of people who had witnessed the disaster and how their lives were affected afterward. It is not nearly that straightforward. Much of it is nonsensical and surreal. For example, there is a section near the beginning of the book that just has a list of quotes from the survivors, with no context. For example, "But now we're free. The harvest is rich. We live like barons." Next, "The only thing I have is a cow. I'd hand her in, if only they don't make another war. How I hate war!" followed by "Here we have the war of wars--Chernobyl!" then, "And the cuckoo is cuckooing, the magpies are chattering, roes are running. Will they reproduce--who knows? One morning, I looked out in the garden, the boars were digging..." I'm not sure if it's a misguided attempt to be poetic or dramatic, but in the end it doesn't make sense and doesn't leave much of an impression.

Editorial Review:

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award
On April 26, 1986, the worst nuclear reactor accident in history occurred in Chernobyl and contaminated as much as three quarters of Europe. Voices from Chernobyl is the first book to present personal accounts of the tragedy. Journalist Svetlana Alexievich interviewed hundreds of people affected by the meltdown---from innocent citizens to firefighters to those called in to clean up the disaster---and their stories reveal the fear, anger, and uncertainty with which they still live. Comprised of interviews in monologue form, Voices from Chernobyl is a crucially important work, unforgettable in its emotional power and honesty.

Editorial Review:

It is one of the most remarkable dramas of World War II -- untold until now.

In 1941, three young men -- brothers, sons of a miller -- witnessed their parents and two other siblings being led away to their eventual murders. It was a grim scene that would, of course, be repeated endlessly throughout the war. What makes this particular story of interest is how the survivors responded. Instead of running or capitulating or giving in to despair, these brothers -- Tuvia, Zus, and Asael Bielski -- did something else entirely. They fought back, waging a guerrilla war of wits and cunning against both the Nazis and the pro-Nazi sympathizers. Along the way they saved well over a thousand Jewish lives.

Using their intimate knowledge of the dense forests surrounding the Belorussian towns of Novogrudek and Lida, the Bielskis evaded the Nazis and established a hidden base camp, then set about convincing other Jews to join their ranks. When the Nazis began systematically eliminating the local Jewish populations -- more than ten thousand were killed in the first year of the Nazi occupation alone -- the Bielskis intensified their efforts, often sending fighting men into the ghettos to escort Jews to safety. As more and more Jews arrived each day, a robust community began to emerge, a "Jerusalem in the woods." They slept in camouflaged dugouts built into the ground. Lovers met, were married, and conceived children. The community boasted a synagogue, a bathhouse, a theater, and cobblers so skilled that Russian officers would wait in line to have their boots reshod.

But as its notoriety grew, so too did the Nazi efforts to capture the rugged brothers; and on several occasions they came so near to succeeding that the Bielskis had to abandon the camp and lead their massive entourage to newer, safer locations. And while some argued in favor of a smaller, more mobile unit, focused strictly on waging battle against the Germans, Tuvia Bielski was firm in his commitment to all Jews. "I'd rather save one old Jewish woman," he said, "than kill ten Nazis."

In July 1944, after two and a half years in the woods, the Bielskis learned that the Germans, overrun by the Red Army, were retreating back toward Berlin. More than one thousand Bielski Jews emerged -- alive -- on that final, triumphant exit from the woods.

The Bielski Brothers is a dramatic and heartfelt retelling of a story of the truest heroism, a historic testament to courage in the face of unspeakable adversity.

Editorial Review:

Timothy Snyder traces the emergence of four rival modern nationalist ideologies from common medieval notions of citizenship. He presents the ideological innovations and ethnic cleansings that abetted the spread of modern nationalism but also examines recent statesmanship that has allowed national interests to be channeled toward peace.

“A work of profound scholarship and considerable importance.”—Timothy Garton Ash, St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford

“Timothy Snyder’s style is a welcome reminder that history writing can be—indeed, ought to be—a literary pursuit.”— Charles King, Times Literary Supplement

“A brilliant and fascinating analysis of the subtleties, complexities, and paradoxes of the evolution of nations in Eastern Europe. It has major implications for all of us who want to understand the processes of state collapse and nation-building in the world.”—Samuel P. Huntington, Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies

“Snyder’s ultimate query in this fresh and stimulating look at the path to nationhood is how the bitter experiences along the way, including the bitterest—ethnic cleansing—are to be overcome.”
—Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs

Editorial Review:

In this fascinating study of unfinished nation-building in Belarus, Grigory Ioffe draws on his two dozen research trips to the country to trace Belarus's history, geography, political situation, society, and economy. The ambivalent relationship between Russia and Belarus results in an identity crisis that is not understood by the West, which leads to Western policies toward Belarus that are based on a fallacy of geopolitical thinking. This book will lead readers to a deeper understanding of Belarus, its relationship with Russia, and its still-forming national identity.

Editorial Review:

This book is an edited translation of the Soviet Staff study of the Red Army's Belorussian operation in the summer of 1944, which was unprecedented in terms of its scale, scope and strategic consequences. The Soviet Stavka had planned a campaign consisting of a series of massive operations spanning the entire Soviet-German front. Four powerful fronts (army groups) operated under close Stavka (high command) control. Over 1.8 million troops accomplished a feat unique in the history of the Red Army: the defeat and dismemberment of an entire German army group.

This book is a translation of the Soviet General Staff Study No 18, a work originally classified as secret and intended to educate Soviet commanders and staff officers. The operation is presented from the Soviet perspective, in the words of the individuals who planned and orchestrated the plans. A map supplement, including terrain maps, is provided to illustrate the flow of the operation in greater detail.

Obviously these one-star reviews are missing the whole point of the book! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 14 people found this review helpful.

A great book that shows readers a look into a side of the holocaust that is somewhat left untaught. How people can accuse Martin of not including facts and figures and making assumptions obviously have done little to no research on the topics he discuses in his book. It's hard to collect facts and evidence on something that happend 50 years ago on a side that is shoved under the carpet.
This is a great look into another significant part of the Holocaust that is sometimes overshadowed by the traditional teachings of the time period.

Editorial Review:

What was the role played by local police volunteers in the Holocaust? Using powerful eyewitness descriptions from the towns and villages of Belorussia and Ukraine, Martin Dean's new book reveals local policemen as hands-on collaborators of the Nazis. They brutally drove Jewish neighbors from their homes and guarded them closely on the way to their deaths. Some distinguished themselves as ruthless murders. Outnumbering German police manpower in these areas, the local police were the foot-soldiers of the Holocaust in the east.

Editorial Review:

Alexander Lukashenko was elected President of Belarus in 1994 with a landslide victory. He was a rank outsider, and stood as an independent candidate, with no political party or institution behind him.

Since election he has created policies based on the principle of improving the quality of life for the broadest number of Belarusian citizens, 'the state for the people'.

However this approach has led to huge criticism from abroad culminating in 2004 with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declaring Belarus to be an 'Outpost of Tyranny'.

This book examines the history of Belarus from the days as part of the Russian Empire through to the present day. The Pale of Settlement, the 1917 Revolution, the Stalin era and the Second World War are all covered from the Belarusian perspective. The impact and influence of this history, and particularly of the Soviet Union on Belarus has been a huge factor in deciding the direction and priorities of Belarusians.

Lukashenko has been called the 'last dictator in Europe' and this book explores the reality of Belarusian social policy, human rights, and the colossal level of external interference in the democratic process in Belarus.

Compiled from a wide range of sources and crucially from open-ended interviews with Belarusian people themselves this book is essential for a genuine understanding of the subject, and the social model that independent Human Rights groups have suggested ought not to be criticised but instead adopted elsewhere.

Brilliant analysis of an ignored event of World War II 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

The main primary source of this book is a collection of thousands of handwritten statements collected by the Polish government in exile when they interviewed the surviving Polish citizens released after the 1942 "amnesty" of those detained by the Soviets after 1939. By careful research, crosschecking and comparison with other resources Professor Gross has been able to produce a work of exceptional clarity and importance in understanding the workings of Stalinism in particular and totalitarianism in general.

He provides an outline of Soviet occupation policy and methods. The whole process seems to have been well planned out, one phase setting up the conditions to implement the second, which in turn set up the conditions for the third, all this operating within an artificial atmosphere of fear, chaos and confusion. An initial period of lawlessness, promoted by the Soviets in order for a rapid collapse of the old order accompanied by the promoting of ethic hatreds among the four main groups- Poles, Ukrainians, Belorussians and Jews, was followed by rapid consolidation of police powers by those who owed their new won power to Soviet authority alone. In the process of laying out this interesting story, Gross adds many interesting insights.

Discussion of social control, prisons and deportation, NKVD interrogation methods (including use of female interrogators) and much more provides a well rounded sketch of this particularly brutal episode of Polish history. I found his analysis of the "privatization of the public realm", "the spoiler state", "totalitarian language", and Soviet use of family networks to insure discipline and control illuminating.

Actually the only short coming of this very interesting book is that is was published in 1988 just before the end of the Soviet Union and thus produced without the use of the since partially-opened Soviet archives. He only has limited information on the Katyn massacres for instance. While this should not affect his conclusions or insights, it may give more accurate statistics than those quoted. Perhaps a new revised edition is called for. In the meantime, this book should be a welcome addition to any library on Polish history, Soviet history or the history of World War II.

Editorial Review:

Jan Gross describes the terrors of the Soviet occupation of the lands that made up eastern Poland between the two world wars: the Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia. His lucid analysis of the revolution that came to Poland from abroad is based on hundreds of first-hand accounts of the hardship, suffering, and social chaos that accompanied the Sovietization of this poorest section of a poverty-stricken country. Woven into the author's exploration of events from the Soviet's German-supported aggression against Poland in September of 1939 to Germany's attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, these testimonies not only illuminate his conclusions about the nature of totalitarianism but also make a powerful statement of their own. Those who endured the imposition of Soviet rule and mass deportations to forced resettlement, labor camps, and prisons of the Soviet Union are here allowed to speak for themselves, and they do so with grim effectiveness.

Outstanding and Eye Opening 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

An outstanding book and eye opening - how evil can walk among us un-noticed. This is a lesson many of us learned after Sept 11 -- how the next door friend can be a fiend in disguise. Readers of this book could have learned that lesson long ago.

Distortion of the facts 2 out of 5 stars.

This is a damaging book that contains lots of distortions and misconceptions. ...the other hand, accusations, particularly when levelled against a whole nation, must be supported by evidence. It is clear that Loftus has not yet learned how to collect that evidence, and has insufficient linguistic and historical knowledge to deal with source material."<...

Fabulous 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As an author, who has written five books on the German army and Waffen-SS, I applaud this latest effort by Antonio Munoz and Dr. Oleg Romanko on Hitler's White Russians. In all aspects, this work has set the standard for information on collaboration, extermination and anti-partisan warfare in Byelorussia during World War II. In short, the book is fabulous.

First, the book is extremely high-quality in it's production. The 500 pages, on glossy stock, make the photographs and maps jump out in superb detail. I've spent roughly twenty years researching World War II archives in four countries, and three-quarters of the photographs in the book are ones I had never seen before! From action photographs during combat operations, to close-ups of key leaders, the book could stand alone among related works for the photographs alone.

But there is much more. The maps, many of which are in color, are easy to follow, and include depictions of every major anti-partisan campaign in the area. Equally as informative are the dozens of order of battle charts and tables that go into superb detail of German army, police, SS and indigenous forces that participated in these operations.

The authors' writing styles are easy to read, and their use of footnotes, from hundreds of sources, show that they have left no stone unturned in their effort to get the complete story of what happened in this little-known theater of the war. Everything is here; you need nothing else to understand what happened. This is not some puff-piece that glosses over the facts. It is an extremely scholarly work, but one written in a style that is reader-friendly.

I salute the authors for their wonderful effort. They succeeded in producing a fabulous book. I suspect I will be consulting it for my own writing efforts for years to come.

Editorial Review:

Using private and archival sources spanning three continents the authors have written the definitive study on the history of collaboration and the anti-partisan war in White Russia during World War II. In addition, the history of the Shoah (holocaust) in White Russia is fully covered. The text is supported by close to 2,000 fully documented footnotes, as well as 125 rare photographs, many never before published, 97 battle maps (33 in full color), 12 color plates, 40 tables, 9 appendices, 9-page glossary of German political and military terms, and a 30-page index which facilitates research.

The authors used materials from the Minsk archives, Bundesarchiv, US Holocaust Memorial Museum, US National Archives, Museum of Modern History, Ljubljana and the Yad Vashem Archives in Israel in addition to employing items from private sources. This is truly a monumental study on a little known subject.
