This book, the autobiography of Mohandas k. Gandhi, the father of modern India, is a must read. if you have any interest in Gandhi, non violence or just want a glimpse into the life of a spiritually guided person, then this book if a must read.

Interesting but biased view 3 out of 5 stars.

I am halfway through the book as of now but I do see an overall bias in the book highlighting the negatives. For example the author spends a huge amount of time describing UP & Bihar the northern states and how corruption is common then just a couple of pages on the south progressing.

When talking of the BJP rule the concentration remains on the right wing attitude and the development that happened during that time is completely ignored.

If you ignore the negative bias that the author has against India and it's governance the book is very well written and has a lot of interesting facts. Definetely a good read.

The international audience might gasp at the comprehensiveness of this tome, but any politically aware Indian will tell you this book offers the same half-truths, and whips up the same paranoia about Indian right. He composed a banal version of Indian history from regular news sources anybody can get their hands on.

It's a pity so few books about India are available to the international public, and so many of them are written by leftist historians. And worse, this guy is not even a historian. He's at best a sports-writer and at worst a boring one.

There's nothing new this book has to offer. Neither it's correct history, nor its author an historian. Do yourself a favor and don't read this book.

One thing is for sure. India would be a much better place after people like Mr. Guha.

This is a nice book for getting an overview of India and picking out things you might want to do there, which is no small task in a country so large. It's more extensively illustrated than any other India guide I've seen. However, having been to India, I wouldn't want to use this book for the actual trip. It doesn't contain nearly enough detailed information about transportation, lodgings, and places to sleep, and its maps are pretty much useless. For actual travel I recommend the Lonely Planet guides, of which there are several for different parts of India.

The year of the marriage proposal, Sivakami is ten. She is neither tall nor short for her age, but she will not grow much more.
