This is a pioneering work on "karayuki-san", impoverished Japanese women sent abroad to work as prostitutes from the 1860s to the 1920s. The narrative follows the life of one such prostitute, Osaki, who is persuaded as a child of ten to accept cleaning work in Sandakan, North Borneo, and then forced to work as a prostitute in a Japanese brothel, one of the many such brothels that were established throughout Asia in conjunction with the expansion of Japanese business interests. Yamazaki views Osaki as the embodiment of the suffering experienced by all Japanese women, who have long been oppressed under the dual yoke of class and gender. This tale provides the historical and anthropological context for understanding the sexual exploitation of Asian women before and during the Pacific War and for the growing flesh trade in Southeast Asia and Japan today. Young women are being brought to Japan with the same false promises that enticed Osaki to Borneo 80 years ago. Yamazaki Tomoko, who herself endured many economic and social hardships during and after the war, has devoted her life to documenting the history of the exchange of women between Japan and other Asian countries since 1868. She has worked directly with "karayuki-san", military comfort women, war orphans, repatriates, women sent as picture brides to China and Manchuria, Asian women who have wed into Japanese farming communities, and Japanese women married to other Asians in Japan.

Mix of urban history, malay legend and contemporary politics 3 out of 5 stars.

In the guise of a book examing the growth of Kuala Lumpur(KL), the author explores Malay legends and stories for what they show about national culture, as well as discussing recent Malaysian history up to Anwar Ibrahim's show trial and imprisonment. For an outsider with some knowledge of Malaysia, the book is excellent, and challenges many assumptions about Malaysia, and its current leadership. I suspect, but do not know, that its treatment may be superficial for a more knowledgeable reader,

Produced in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature, it is illustrated with 400 superb full-color plates taken especially for this book, of plants, insects and other invertebrates, fish, reptiles, frogs, birds, and mammals, each in its natural habitat.

Wild Malaysia offers a general yet accurate introduction to this spectacularly scenic region and its national parks. Malaysia's tropical islands, topped by rainforest and ringed by coral reefs and transparent blue seas, are as beautiful and untouched as anywhere in the world. Its vast and exotic wildlife encompasses elephants and the world's smallest rhinoceros, a profusion of monkeys and apes (including proboscis and leaf monkeys, gibbons, and orangutans), the slow loris and the tarsier, the clouded leopard and the sunbear, bats and reptiles, a spectacular variety of bird and marine life, and over 10,000 species of plants.

Economic Change in East Malaysia is an authoritative study in the economic history of Sabah and Sarawak since the 19th century. It emphasises their distinctive colonial history, the attempts at modernisation since they became part of Malaysia in 1963 and the economic and environmental consequences of their continued economic dependence on a relatively small range of primary products, including timber. In addition to reinterpreting economic change over a long-term period, the book provides for the first time a comparative account of economy and society in Sabah and Sarawak. A comprehensive account, well written and intersting. A must 4 out of 5 stars.

I found the book to be quite enlightening, and gained a lot of knowledge of Sheikh Mubarak's reign, and his struggle to place the Al Sabah family in firm control. Its well written and insightful.

Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah is widely regarded as the founder of modern Kuwait, yet there has so far been no detailed study of his reign. In this vividly written critical history, based almost entirely on unpublished archive material, discusses the Sheikh's seizure of power, the political concerns underlying the 1899 Anglo-Kuwait Agreement, the nature of Mubarak's involvement in tribal politics, the great struggle for mastery of Central Arabia between the Al Saud and Al Rashid dynasties, and the impact that this had on the development of Kuwait under his rule. While recognizing Mubarak's political skills and his success in establishing the independence and diplomatic identity of Kuwait, al-Ghanem argues that he was essentially an opportunist whose ability to control events was ultimately limited and whose abortive Arabian dream was pursued at a high cost to Kuwaitis.
