The Best Portuguese Grammar I've Seen 5 out of 5 stars.

"Essential Portuguese Grammar" is the best book about Portuguese grammar I've seen. I studied Spanish before I decided to study Portuguese, so it was a lot easier to absorb the information in this book. If you've never studied a foreign language before, you may want to brush on your English grammar first.

There are more sub-sections in the book, but there are too many to list here. Portuguese and Spanish grammar have something in common. Students of both languages have trouble understanding certain grammatical concepts: the written accents, ser/estar, para/por, imperfect/preterit, and the subjunctive. However, Portuguese still uses the future subjunctive, which is hardly ever used in modern Spanish.

How often do people review verbs? 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very good product. The verbs have conjugations for every situation (past, present, and any other tenses. hehe.) The only thing that stops me from giving this book a 5 is that, for a beginner, this book can be very confusing. Although, if the buyer were a linguist, this would be such an a amazing tool.

For some years searching for richavel knowledge (best book)that would help me to develope fast in studying portugues verbs,I started navigating at google and shortly descovered the wonderful pruducts at amazon.I bought 501 portugues verbs fully conjugated.In short,this book has help me a lot within short time I began to use it.It is well arranged and has specific guidelines to every verb employed.Whosoever use it will find oneself espressed and well understood to the natives of the language at all corners in Portugues speaking countries.YOU! This book has a ton of great information. It has a pretty extensive dictionary, important phrases, key verb conjugations. It's really easy to use and explains everything clearly. I am teaching myself Brazilian portuguese and this book is an excellent supplement to other learning materials.

I have been trying to read books written in portuguese and this litle dicctionary is helping a lot, also if you are going to travel will be necessary.

It has Brazilian-Portuguese to English and vice-versa. It also includes LOADS of other info like useful phrases, proper grammar useage, conjugating verbs, prepositions etc, a pronunciation guide, asking questions, and some general facts about Brazil.

Also includes travel help sections such as restaurants, transportation, shopping, entertainment and even safety (Brazil is not the safest country in the world).

There is a list of things NOT to say or do as well. For example, the American "A-Okay" (sign formed with the thumb and forefinger making a circle) is a big insult in Brazil. Better to use a thumbs-up!

Highly recommended!

Beware of serious pronunciation errors in this book. Although it was overall pretty useful, there were some glaring errors in areas where there likely shouldn't have been. Case in point, the phonetic pronunciation for tchau (goodbye) in the book is spelled out as "tee-show." At least in Bahia, it was pronounced by the locals just like the Italian "ciao." The word "vinte" (twenty) is spelled out "veeng-te" in the book, while again everyone we encountered in Bahia pronounced it "veen-chay." I don't know if these are regional differences in Brazilian Portuguese, but if so, they need to at least be addressed in the book. Take care when using the phrasebook to listen to the local speakers as well.

I chose this out of the many options here because I wanted to focus just on Brazilian Portuguese. I am happy with the book. It is a solid, easy to read introduction to Brazilian Portuguese. If you choose to use the CD, the excerpts arrive in a timely manner...just when you're about to say to yourself, "I can't grasp this without hearing it."

I have other books and programs (Rosetta Stone) for learning Portuguese. This is a great addition that is easy to have along when my computer is not convenient to use. I try to spend lots of spare minutes just working on a new page. Only complaint at all is that it says it is for Brazilian Portuguese, but all given pronunciations are not necessarily the right pronunciations listed for Brazil Portuguese....more traditional. But if you know the way they say things differently in Brazil, then it is a great way to add vocabulary.
