Editorial Review:

This is the most comprehensive photographic guide to the birds of India and the Indian subcontinent. Never before have so many of the region's species been illustrated in one book.

The brilliant photographs--most of which appear here for the first time--have been carefully selected to show not only the most common Passerine and non-Passerine species, but also more elusive species and distinctive subspecies. An up-to-date distribution map and a unique code indicating frequency and global status are provided for each of the 668 species covered. The concise text provides vital information on habitats, habits, and voice to ensure accurate identification.

Designed for easy use, the book places photos and maps in close proximity to provide an at-a-glance overview for each species. Birds are indexed by both their common and scientific names.

This is an essential volume for all birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts as well as for anyone traveling to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Bhutan.

Bikram Grewal has written more than twenty books on India, including three guides to its birds. He is a biodiversity expert for the Indian government. Bill Harvey is a lifelong birdwatcher who has lived throughout the Indian subcontinent. He published the first authoritative checklist on the birds of Bangladesh as well as numerous articles and is a cofounder of the Northern Indian Bird Network. Otto Pfister is a wildlife photographer whose work has appeared in numerous publications. He has also published several illustrated articles on birds.

  • Gorgeous full-color photographs
  • Distribution maps for all species
  • Abundance icons
  • Photographs, text, and maps in close proximity for at-a-glance overview
  • Expert text aids species identification

The ramblings of an amateur with a camera. 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There is often considerable confusion whenever White Star publishing of Italy produce yet another book about the sea which is aimed primarily at scuba divers. Firstly, each book gets treated to a particular brand of Italian English which is hard to understand and makes reading the item very difficult indeed. Secondly, they appear to use a small number of truly excellent underwater photographers who are then incapable of delivering the standard of product which the modern scuba diver "demands." Finally, the qualifications of those underwater photographers when it comes to describing that flora and fauna is, at the very least, suspect. For example, any author of a book on, say, Sharks who had a PhD in marine biology would mention that qualification somewhere within the book. Mr Mojetta appears to have no such qualifications. In short, factual errors do not seem to matter to these publishers.

Mojetta has previously produced books about the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea. There are many errors in that book. He has also produced a book called "The Barrier Reefs" which later became "The Coral Reefs" - both being largely the same product. Now we have yet another tome which seeks to explain the flora and fauna of the Red Sea - which was also covered in those previous books. In some instances this book is called "Red Sea and Complete Coral Reef Guide" in another it is called "The Red Sea - Underwater Paradise" and in yet another it is simply called "Underwater Paradise" and yet it is all the same book.

My biggest problem with Angelo Mojetta, however, are his qualifications, ability and experience for writing a book of this type. In short, they do not appear to exist. There are many errors in his previous works and other instances where the same picture of a fish is described as being one species in one book and something very different in another.

There is far more to writing books about the flora and fauna of our seas than simply taking a photograph and looking that species up in a book written by somebody else! Sadly, Mojetta's errors will be accepted as being factually correct by some divers who will then put the wrong name into their logbook.

In summary, this is "not" a trustworthy guide, it is a book that serious marine biologists will laugh at. It is, however, packed with outstanding photography - photography which should not be allowed to fool the reader into believing the written content is anything more than the ramblings of an amateur with a camera.

Editorial Review:

Part armchair retreat, part field guide, this volume takes readers on an underwater voyage of discovery beneath the Red Sea, Malaysia, the Caribbean Sea, and the Maldives. Chapters are organized geographically, presenting the outstanding natural features and unique characteristics of each region. Accompanying the exhaustive text, maps, and 3-D reconstructions of the seabed and coral reefs provide both naturalists and divers with an in-depth understanding of the creatures and plant life that makes each of these marine ecosystems unique and beautiful. Hundreds of spectacular color photographs convey the extraordinary richness of these underwater paradises, spotlighting flora and fauna, and various species in their natural environments. Precise biological drawings prove indispensable to naturalists.

Editorial Review:

Afghanistan is one of many South Asian countries appearing in daily headlines, as it attempts to rebuild its society, including its educational system, after decades of war. Sri Lanka, devastated by the tsunami of 2004, and parts of Pakistan and Northern India, coping with the aftereffects of a major earthquake, are also also struggling for teachers, classrooms, supplies, and a sense of normalcy for their students. This volume, part of the Schooling Around the World series, provides readers with a history and survey of education in eight of the region's countries. It examines the Primary, Secondary, and Postsecondary levels of education, identifying the types of education available (public, private, tutoring, etc), any race, gender or social class issues that impact education, and major reforms taking place. Readers will find discussions of curriculum and teaching methods most helpful, as well as a special "day in the life" feature, which gives a personal look at what it's like for students attending school in that country today. -Afghanistan -Bangladesh -Bhutan -India -Maldives -Nepal -Pakistan -Sri Lanka
