Editorial Review:

"The perspective of 15 years, painstaking research, thousands of interviews, extensive analysis and evaluation, and the creative talent of John Toland [paint] the epic struggle on an immense canvas...Toland writes with the authority of a man who was there...He tastes the bitterness of defeat of those who surrendered and writes as if he had the benefit of the eyes and ears of soldiers and generals on the other side of the line...If you could read only one book to understand generals and GIs and what their different wars were like this is the book." - "Chicago Sunday Tribune". "The author has devoted years to studying memoirs, interviewing veterans and consulting military documents, both German and American. He also has revisited the old battlefields in Belgium and Luxembourg...Toland has told the whole story with dramatic realism...It is a story of panic, terror and of high-hearted courage." - "New York Times Book Review"."For the first time in the growing literature of World War II, the inspiring story of the stubborn, lonely, dogged battle of the Americans locked in this tragic salient is told ...gripping ...You cannot put it down once you start it." - "San Francisco Chronicle". John Toland has written numerous books on World War II, including "Infamy: Pearl Harbor and Its Aftermath". Carlo D'Este is the author of "Patton: A Genius for War" and other works.

Editorial Review:

Honor can never be left behind.

Sixty years ago, as Allied forces pushed across Europe, the Nazis launched a desperate, overwhelming attack that caught them unprepared, setting off what would become known as one of the bloodiest, most brutal battles in human history: the Battle of the Bulge. Then, more than half a century after the last shots of World War II were fired, a team of forensic scientists and relic hunters enlisted the aid of several veterans of the Bulge for one last mission: to return to the battle site and recover the lost remains of their brothers-in-arms, to ensure they would be buried with all the honors they deserve. Written by a member of the expedition, this is a story of loyalty and the bonds of war, a compelling scientific mystery, and a long-awaited homecoming for families who waited decades for the return of their loved ones. Also included is a CD/DVD with additional images from the expedition, as well as other supplemental materials.

CD-ROM INCLUDES:

Slideshow image collection of the search for missing soldiers from the Battle of the Bulge, including recovered artifacts, wartime photos, and profiles of the missing soldiers.

Take this book with you when you go 4 out of 5 stars.

I was a battlefield tour guide in Europe for over three years. One of our most popular tours was the Ardennes Offensive aka "The Battle of the Bulge". Since we only had a day, we would drive up from Luxembourg City, paralleling the 3rd Army's relief route, and tour the Bastogne perimeter. If I had this book, I would've recommended this to my customers who wished to visit other sites of the battle. "A Tour of the Bulge Battlefield" is designed for the tourist who wishes to tour the battlefield(s) for himself/herself. Well researched and written, one could almost use this book as a secondary source in itself. The six chapters cover the entire battle, from the north around Stavelot, to the south in the Ettlebruch/Diekirch area. Each chapter is in itself an excellent capsulation of the battle and movements, both German and American. However, this is not a guidebook in the traditional sense, there is nothing about lodging, and very little regarding food, and other questions most tourists have. Also, what few maps there are inadequate, surprising considering this book is designed for auto-touring.

If you get several maps, the excellent Michelin series comes to mind, plus a traditional guidebook, and some `net research regarding transport, renting a car in Belgium/Luxembourg/Germany, this book would make for an outstanding historical vacation.

Editorial Review:

In a similar manner to A Tour of the Arnhem Battlefields, this new volume covers in detail the scene of one of the greatest battles of World War II. Maps and then-and-now photographs illustrate the battle itself and offer a detailed guide to touring the area as it is today.

The book is organized in a series of itineraries, giving detailed information on the pivotal areas of the overall battle; Bastogne, St Vith etc. This book works equally well for the battlefield visitor and those who cannot make the trip but who wish to gain a more detailed appreciation of the terrain on which this massive German counter-attack was fought.

A complex history presented clearly with clarity and a light touch 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have just finished this delightful book, "The Low Countries". I am not an academic, but rather a former international banker who lived in the proximity of the Low Countries (3 years in Germany and a year in London) before spending 10 years in the Far East, during which time I occasionally also had Dutch bosses and colleagues. I have long been intrigued but the differences in personalities of Cologne and Frankfurt where I lived and The Netherlands and Belgium so close by, yet found no history books that really helped me get my arms around their complex, interconnected histories. This book not only did this, but with an occasional sly humor that I came to look for with delight.

Editorial Review:

This is the first full historical survey of the Benelux area (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) to be written in English. Paul Arblaster describes the whole sweep of the history of the Low Countries, from Roman frontier provinces, through medieval principalities, to the establishment of the three constitutional monarchies of the present day. This readable overview highlights the international importance of the social, economic , spiritual, and cultural movements that have marked the region.

Editorial Review:

If the Battle of the Bulge was Germany's last gasp, it was also America's proving ground-the largest single action fought by the U.S. Army in World War II. Taking a new approach to an old story, Harold Winton widens our field of vision by showing how victory in this legendary campaign was built upon the remarkable resurrection of our truncated interwar army, an overhaul that produced the effective commanders crucial to GI success in beating back the Ardennes counteroffensive launched by Hitler's forces.

Winton's is the first study of the Bulge to examine leadership at the largely neglected level of corps command. Focusing on the decisions and actions of six Army corps commanders-Leonard Gerow, Troy Middleton, Matthew Ridgway, John Millikin, Manton Eddy, and J. Lawton Collins-he recreates their role in this epic struggle through a mosaic of narratives that take the commanders from the pre-war training grounds of America to the crucible of war in the icy-cold killing fields of Belgium and Luxembourg.

Winton introduces the story of each phase of the Bulge with a theater-level overview of the major decisions and events that shaped the corps battles and, for the first time, fully integrates the crucial role of airpower into our understanding of how events unfolded on the ground. Unlike most accounts of the Ardennes that chronicle only the periods of German and American initiative, Winton's study describes an intervening middle phase in which the initiative was fiercely contested by both sides and the outcome uncertain. His inclusion of the principal American and German commanders adds yet another valuable layer to this rich tapestry of narrative and analysis.

Ultimately, Winton argues that the flexibility of the corps structure and the competence of the men who commanded the six American corps that fought in the Bulge contributed significantly to the ultimate victory. Chronicling the human drama of commanding large numbers of soldiers in battle, he has produced an artful blend of combat narrative, collective biography, and institutional history that contributes significantly to the broader understanding of World War II as a whole.

A Guide to Jewish Poland 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 25 people found this review helpful.

What can you say about Jewish Poland in 264 pages or less?
This is a subject for volumes, not for a thin paperback.
I suppose that if I had to describe Polish Jewry "on one foot" (as they say) this book would be it. This is the book in your backpack when you travel to Poland. It opens with the Kaddish. You'll need that often, as you travel through the country.

It then goes on to list some of the Jewish landmark events in a "Chronology of Jewish Presence in Poland before and after WWII" which starts at 860 AD. That's just to give you a taste of how rich the Jewish heritage was in Poland.

There are several short chapters on the history of the Jews in Poland, and an introduction to Polish Jewish culture. But the most interesting and useful information in this book is the reference material. The book contains maps of various sorts, showing not just geography but also demographic information. There are lists and photos, diagrams, and names, names and more names.

So many contributed to the rich Jewish life in Poland that they are too great to mention. The section on famous figures and their contributions is simply a list of names
and their contributions. This hardly does justice so giants like Shalom Aleichem and Isaac Bashevis Singer, each one line entries under Yiddish and Hebrew Writers. Imagine that.

Almost a third of this book is a glossary of Polish Jewry. Here you will find an alphabetical listing of some of the most significant locations and a paragraph on each.
Though some of the entries are very thorough, I was disappointed in the number of items missing from this 100-page section, particulary the religious references.

The chapter on major Jewish centers in Poland, focuses on Cracow, Lodz, Lublin, and Warsaw. The book has an interesting chapter on tracing ones roots in Poland. It discusses the types of documents that are helpful for tracing family members and the repositories in Poland where they can be found. There is a list of modern day congregations and synagogues, striking in that it is two sides of a single page. There is another section on current Jewish organizations, recommended reading and an index.

I suppose if such a rich topic as Poland's Jewish Landmarks had to be summed up in a portable paperback, this book does the job. But readers of this book should take the recommended reading section seriously, and use this book as just the start of a fascinating study.

Editorial Review:

Complemented by over 70 maps, illustrations, and timelines that illuminate the history and achievements of Polish Jewry, this guide provides thorough and detailed lists of synagogues, monuments, cemeteries, and other places of Jewish heritage.

A Masterful Geographical and Historical Work 5 out of 5 stars.

In researching sources for information on Malta for a forthcoming excursion after the Universala Kongreso de Esperanto next year, I came across Tom Eccardt's "Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe." I not only found everything I needed to know about Malta, but was fascinated by his treatment of the other six small states. This is an excellently researched work, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in geography or history.

Editorial Review:

This unique book examines the history, culture and inner workings of the seven smallest independent countries in Europe. These are among the oldest lands in Europe, despite their diversity, they have much in common. Most have relatively high per capita incomes and life expectancies, and relatively low unemployment. This narrative first presents the many unique issues that confront small countries, including maintaining their independence, economic viability, native languages, and forms of government. The second part of the book describes each microstate in turn, showing how each one has met these challenges and adapted over time. These concise and engaging histories contain cultural information on subjects including the arts, gastronomy and popular tourist sites.

DISSAPPOINTING NARRATION OF HISTORICAL EVENTS 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book contains a thorough summary of historical events to date. However, it does not contain any substantial information about the different stages of the country itself, its adventures or misadventures in the hands of different rulers and also its present political situation. The book commences promising, however this promise is diluted by the incesant narration of events without any linkage to the different stages in the life of the country. Also, the lack of historical and/or comparative maps leaves the reader wondering about the increased or decreased size of the country during different periods or under different rulers. After reading the book I still have to refer to my Atlas to identify the current boundaries of Luxembourg.

Editorial Review:

Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest states, yet it is rich in history and boasts a glorious past of emperors, knights, castles and faith. In modern times it has endured foreign occupation and partition before becoming a modern state in the nineteenth century. Despite this, Luxembourg enjoys influence way beyond its size. This book tells the story of Luxembourg from ancient times, through the crusader period and centuries of foreign domination, to the growth of the modern, prosperous Luxembourg of today.

Engineering the Victory-The Battle of the Bulge 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As the title states, this book is about the exploits of combat engineers in the Ardennes and, in part, in the Heurtgen Forest during the period November to January, 1944. It is somewhat unique in that it focuses on the contributions that engineers made toward stopping two German panzer divisions and one army division during the December attack in the Belgium-Luxembourg area. It is a story that needs to be told and Col. Pergrin does a good job of doing it. He had his headquarters in Malmedy, and he was in a very good position to critique the exploits along the northern shoulder. (At one point, the Colonel identifies not only a northern and southern shoulder, but an eastern and western one as well!) However, the importance of this book is marred by a distinct lack of editing and proof reading. Spelling errors are myriad. For example, the same place name is spelled in different ways. Photographs are repeated for no particular reason with different captions. Some sentences make no sense. H.M. Cole's maps from the US Army in WWII, "Ardennes" book are reprinted, so small that the information is unusable, and no citation is given for the source. (Lack of citations for sources is another shortcoming of the book) On the other hand, there are a few unit action maps that are very useful in interpreting the actions of engineers at Trois Ponts, Stavelot, and Malmedy. Col. Pergrin has made a valuable contribution in this work. If he had had a good editor to smooth out the repeats of general Battle of the Bulge history, bring the chapters together as a cohesive unit and eliminate extraneous side trips, we would have a 5-star book.

Note: My thanks to "Horrido" who did such a constructive job in reviewing my review. I have made a couple of corrections which I hope will soothe his sensibilites. It sounds like with the help of his uncle, he now knows the truth about WWII.

Editorial Review:

The Battle Of the Bulge, in December 1944, was Hitler and the Wehrmacht's last great battle of World War II in the West. After losing the war for the beaches and hedgerows of Normandy, and barely escaping with huge losses from the Falaise pocket, the Germ
