Editorial Review:

She was an Oscar-winning Hollywood actress; he the scion of Europe's longest reigning monarchy. The marriage of movie star Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier Grimaldi of Monaco (a romance ironically spawned by a chance, MGM publicity-driven photo op) was one of the 20th century's most enchanting fables come to life. Yet, in veteran Hollywood biographer J. Randy Taraborelli's retelling, (the first comprehensive chronicle of the royal couple's romance and quarter-century reign) their day-to-day struggle with romantic inertia and a legacy of familial dysfunction cast their fairy tale existence in a bittersweet light long before the 1982 automobile accident that took Grace's life.

Taraborelli's struggle to walk the fine line between the respectful biography he intends and the salacious, tell-all exposes he decries makes for occasionally awkward passages. However, the author eventually succeeds in giving his royal subjects--and the ongoing conflicts with their respective families--a familiar, all-too-human scale. --Jerry McCulley

A Masterful Geographical and Historical Work 5 out of 5 stars.

In researching sources for information on Malta for a forthcoming excursion after the Universala Kongreso de Esperanto next year, I came across Tom Eccardt's "Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe." I not only found everything I needed to know about Malta, but was fascinated by his treatment of the other six small states. This is an excellently researched work, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in geography or history.

Editorial Review:

This unique book examines the history, culture and inner workings of the seven smallest independent countries in Europe. These are among the oldest lands in Europe, despite their diversity, they have much in common. Most have relatively high per capita incomes and life expectancies, and relatively low unemployment. This narrative first presents the many unique issues that confront small countries, including maintaining their independence, economic viability, native languages, and forms of government. The second part of the book describes each microstate in turn, showing how each one has met these challenges and adapted over time. These concise and engaging histories contain cultural information on subjects including the arts, gastronomy and popular tourist sites.

Monaco Grand Prix: A photographic portrait of the world's most prestigious motor race

I think this is an excellent and well written book. The photographs are fantastic, there is just enough written information pertaing to both the photos and the year of each Grand Prix. I was not disappointed with this book, however; my opinion is biased as Michael Hewett is my cousin. I have his first book and I enjoyed it too.

Editorial Review:

Exquisite photographs, most of them published here for the first time, provide an intimate portrait of the Monaco Grand Prix, from the first race in 1929 through to the present day. The images come from three collections – British photographer Michael Hewett, who has attended every race since 1962, the Rainier family’s Palace Archives and the Monaco Tourist Board. Shot from every possible vantage point on the mountainous street circuit, the photographs capture the magic of this fabulous event.

Monte Carlo is more than a casino 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The author has previously published works on Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, and Countess Tolstoy -- but also on Judy Garland, Shirley Temple, Ronald Reagan, and P.T. Barnum, so the reader may be forgiven for unfounded suspicions of tabloidism. The second half of this workmanlike narrative does, in fact, concern itself mostly with the lively affairs of the current younger generation but the reader may ignore all that (or the reader may try).

For the first half details in sweeping prose the adventurous history of the Grimaldis, "an ambitious, hot-blooded, unscrupulous race, keen to plunder, swift to revenge, and furious in battle." The harbor at Monte Carlo has been strategically important since the Carthaginian fleet anchored there. The Lombards, Arabs, Guelfs, and Genoese all had their strongholds and the Grimaldi family arrived in 1162 as Genoese consuls. One night in 1297, Francesco Grimaldi (known as "the Spiteful") climbed the cliffs with his followers, disguised as monks, and overpowered the small garrison, and the family has ruled the Rock ever since. Edwards makes clear the necessary nerve and tenacity and the willingness to fight, as well as the diplomatic balancing act the princes of Monaco have had to perform in order to survive as a more or less independent state.

Editorial Review:

A chronicle of the longest reigning dynasty in the world traces the rule of the Grimaldis of Monaco from the French Revolution to the present, including profiles of Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie. 100,000 first printing. $100,000 ad/promo. BOMC Alt.

Editorial Review:

In all its glittering splendor and decadence, here is the uncensored story of a family bred for glory, and destined for tragedy.

The jewel in the crown of Europe's lush Cote D'Azur, the fiercely independent principality of Monaco gleams like a diamond above the Mediterranean. This playground of the rich and beautiful reached its zenith with Prince Rainier, Princess Grace, and their three children-- until Grace's tragic death in 1982. As the myth began to crumble, scandal rocked Monaco in every way, from its institutions to its image to the royal family itself. Now, through searching interviews with family members, personal friends, and long-time courtiers, the intimate, shocking truths about Monaco are explored in vivid detail, including:

* The ancient Curse of the Grimaldis and its legacy of misfortune
* The never-before-told story of Princess Grace's abortion before she married Prince Rainier
* New details about Princess Grace on the night before she died, and her death in a Monaco hospital
* The alleged secret plot to destroy Princess Stephanie's marriage
* The appalling rumors about the death of Stefano Casiraghi, Princess Caroline's second husband
* The wild love life of Prince Albert and the rumors that haunt him

With eight pages of dramatic photos!

A perfect testimony of one of the greatest grand prix. 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

A must have for every F1 enthusiast. About 8 pages for each year since the first G.P. in 1929 to 1998; a lot of superb photos; great 3 language text; near complete data of the competitors, the cars, the qualifing and race results. The race history highlights full recorded in separeted articles; the very big format and the photo record of the first 6 of more than 20 last years are the touch of perfection of this fantastic book. Only a more complete technical data of the cars might be presented. One of the best money value in F1 books; like others of this great author.

F1 photography doesn't get any better than this 5 out of 5 stars.

Rainer Schlegelmilch has covered Grand Prix racing since the early sixties and probably now has one of the biggest photo archives on the sport available. What distinguishes him from many of his colleagues is that he has always striven to capture the passion and the human side of a sport that is by nature highly technical. The Monaco Grand Prix is the last true road race that is left in the current Grand Prix calendar and its location, history and flair give it an air and mystique like no other race in the world. Schlegelmilch captures past and present, triumph and tragedy that make up the story of this most famous race in Formula One. The quality of the printed photos is outstanding and the book has a good balance of black and white and color images. The accompanying 3-language captions are short but informative. The book also includes full race statistics of all races up to 1998.

Grace of Monaco A Living Legacy 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is by far the best book I have ever read about Grace Kelly, Princess Grace of Monaco. Steven Englund did a remarkable job in bringing humanity and depth to Princess Grace, from her acting days, to her marriage to the Prince of Monaco. What I found poignantly touching was how much Grace missed her acting days, and how she was not able to continue acting due to her role as Princess of Monaco. Grace was the epitome of a gem of a soul who sought to help the sick, the poor, and the downtrodden. She did so through charities she created, and set an example of the power of giving. If you are interested in reading a biography that is in depth, genuine, and filled with examples to follow, I highly recommend this book. Outstanding!

Editorial Review:

A history of the Grimaldi family, rulers of the principality of Monaco, and a discussion of the many problems that have faced each of the three children of Prince Rainier and his wife, former US film star, Grace Kelly. It traces the decline of a tragic dynasty.
