very exciting - couldn't put it down 5 out of 5 stars.

this is one of the most exciting adventure/discovery books i've ever read. it was a page-turner from beginning to end.

fascinating history 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a fascinating read, full of details (politics of the time, how ships operate, torture, sexual mores of various tribes around the world, etc.). The story of the first voyage around the world is so amazingly dramatic one would say "too far fetched" if it were fiction. Every page is so rich with detail that you want to just slow down as you read. The only slight flaw is that the characters do not come quite as alive as I would have liked. But everything else about this book is so good, it's well worth reading.

Editorial Review:

Ferdinand Magellan's daring circumnavigation of the globe in the sixteenth century was a three-year odyssey filled with sex, violence, and amazing adventure. Now in Over the Edge of the World, prize-winning biographer and journalist Laurence Bergreen entwines a variety of candid, firsthand accounts, bringing to life this groundbreaking and majestic tale of discovery that changed both the way explorers would henceforth navigate the oceans and history itself.

Beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Wonderful Catholic historian William Thomas Walsh here relates the amazing and true story of the three peasant children who were witnesses to the apparation of Our Lady of Fatima. They were first visited by the Angel of Peace, Archangel Michael. Later, on the 13th of each month, they were visited by the Blessed Mother of God. On the final visitation, October 13,1917, she performed a miracle, witnessed by thousands. It was "the day the Sun danced".

Reading Walsh's beautiful and appealing manuscript, one is taken right back to Portugal in the days of the Great War. We come to indentify with the peasant children, with their awesome spirituality, and their amazing courage. Careful reading of this wonderful book would seem to compel us all to pick up a rosary, to pray, to console, and to work for peace with all our might. In this, the work is timeless; and we hope it will always be read by seekers after the truth.

Walsh ends this magnificent little book by recording his personal interview with the only surviving witness, Lucia, then a nun. The picture is awesome and riveting, this most Catholic of modern historians, this most gentle and humble of sisters. It is quite beautiful enough to change our fallen world. Read this. And be richly blessed by the experience.

Editorial Review:

In 1917 the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared in a tiny Portuguese village. Her prophecies of World War II and the rise of communism, her plea for penance, and her promise of the conversion of Russia are among the dramatic moments in this fascinating account of a modern miracle.

Another Great Introduction 4 out of 5 stars.
31 of 32 people found this review helpful.

In terms of scope of work, Russell-Wood's Portuguese Empire -World on the Move is a welcome addition to the "holistic" study of Portuguese overseas enterprise. To be sure, Portuguese scholarship has "caught up" with developments in Western historiography in the last two decades or so; there is also no shortage of area studies. Yet coverage remains uneven and this is especially so where English works on the subject is concerned

In terms of Western historiography, global history remains a nascent field. The diversely and globally located formal and informal enclaves does not mean that the overseas experiences belong to the Portuguese people alone, they were not to be claimed exclusively by Asians, Africans or Brazilians either; but as one scholar remarked -it was a shared memory

Like its more "matured" British counterpart, Portuguese history is increasingly interacting with indigenous and primary sources. Russell-Wood's Portuguese Empire is built on largely secondary sources, as expected; including afew Portuguese primary materials. Mastering the languages and the necessary paleography remains a daunting task for any historian. Eventhough the perspective might be Portuguese, the issues dealt with are global in nature; qualifying it in the category of world history. Russell-Wood also clarified from the beginning that he will not be probing too much into the political-administrative-military aspect but with explore the technologies, geography, demography, economics, ideas and dynamics of ecology (ie flora, fauna and disease)

In terms of perspective, the Portuguese Empire does indeed take on a "new history" approach, looking not only at the business of "the high class" in society (ie administrators and clergy) but also at the individuals and the voiceless

Whether in terms of human experience or traffic of goods, Russell-Wood has woven the international nature of the Portuguese empire well into the book. In an illustration of the former, there was a father and son team who were given appointments from Brazil to Africa to Goa and Macao and even returning briefly to Portugal to participate in the War of Spanish Succession (p 70-1). In the terms of trade, cloves from Ternate were carried to Malacca, to Cochim, then to Lisbon, reloaded there for Morocco and exchanged for wheat which became a further part of the exchange system of the South Atlantic (p 134). Excellent maps and tables were also interspersed in the book to explain the flow and traffic of commodities exchanged between the Portuguese and their hosts or that of the complicated wind system of the Atlantic or Indian Ocean

In some ways, the largely non new primary resource based and reinterpretative nature of the book meant it will still resonates afew outdated ideas. For example, the book continues to portray a planned approach by which the Portuguese were undertaking their overseas enterprise (p 21). Even the historians of the more "successful" British are conceiting that the formation of its First Empire might be more haphazard that what have been previously believed. Granted, the Portuguese venture had seen more of the state/crown intervention in the beginning than the private enterprise approach of the British; logistical and technological challenges of the time forbid a more coordinated effort

The book professed to look at development of the "Portuguese Empire" to the eve of the Napoleonic Wars just on the onset of nineteenth century (beginning of modern era?). Space does not permit it to treat the entire period with justice even on the secondary sources available. On trying to tie the Portuguese world together, the book did a splendid job and certainly complement, as the author humbly acknowledged, Boxer CR's magnificently written Portuguese Seaborne Empire as well as many other research done to date on political and military aspect of this human experience

Editorial Review:

By approaching the history of the Portuguese empire thematically, historian A.J.R. Russell-Wood paints a broad portrait of the first and one of the greatest colonial empires--its birth, apotheosis, and decline. Russell-Wood shows unique insight into the diversity and balance between competing interests and priorities that characterized the Portuguese culture and its expansion, spanning four centuries's events on four different continents. 84 illustrations.

Editorial Review:

For nearly eight centuries, the Iberian Peninsula was remarkable for its political, religious, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity. In Medieval Iberia Olivia Remie Constable brings together nearly one hundred original sources that testify to the peninsula's rich and sometimes volatile mix of Christians, Muslims, and Jews. The documents collected here date mostly from the eighth through the fifteenth centuries and have been translated from Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, Castilian, Catalan, and Portuguese by many of the most eminent scholars in the field of Iberian studies. The selections include chronicle materials, poetry, and legal and religious sources, and each is accompanied by a brief introduction placing the text in its historical and cultural setting. Arranged chronologically, the documents are also keyed so as to be accessible to readers interested in specific topics such as urban life, the politics of the royal courts, interfaith relations, or women, marriage, and the family.

Can't travel without it 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I am always more comfortable in traveling to a country for which there is a Red Guide. They don't include the folksy details of some of the other guide books, but I like quiet hotels and I don't think that you can beat this series of guides for that information. Give me a red hotel with a red rocking chair and I'm in heaven!
It's less good for restaurants, unless you are only into the high end, but when you want to find quality, it's great.

Its in Spanish 1 out of 5 stars.

I love Michelin guides and have used them for many travels. This review doesnt reflect the guide or its content but the fact that it is listed as "Multilingual." Parts of it are multilingual but the description in the listings are all in Spanish. If you are expecting the descriptions to be in English, this is not the guide for you.

Editorial Review:

The Michelin Guides offer a selection of the best hotels and restaurants in every price category. These establishments are chosen by a team of full-time inspectors with a professional background in the industry. They cover every corner of the countries, visiting new establishments as well as testing the quality and consistency of the hotels and restaurants already listed in the guide.

Definitive, comprehensive, informative, articulate. 5 out of 5 stars.

Port And The Douro is the fascinating story of Port over the centuries and surveys the remarkable physical conditions of the wine growing region of Portugal, the grape varieties, and the vineyards that make the Douro valley so special. Richard Mayson draws upon his many years of experience in the wine trade in general and his remarkable expertise in Port wines and how they are made. Port And The Douro is definitive, comprehensive, informative, articulate, and greatly rewarding reading for connoisseurs, dealers, and the nonspecialist general reader seeking to select just the right Port for the occasion.

Editorial Review:

Fully revised and updated in its second edition, Port and the Douro recounts the fascinating history of the Port region and explores the vineyards, grape varieties, and the many styles of port available. It describes all aspects of the beverage’s production, and includes a directory of producers, as well as details about the key vintages. Expert Richard Mayson also examines the prospects for port in the 21st century.

The history of a country in a nutshell 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 37 people found this review helpful.

This history of Portugal contains a remarkable amount of information for such a small book, small enough to go into your pocket or handbag. It covers the pre-history of Portugal and the founding of the country in the 12th century and its history all the way to the end of the 20th century. I like this book because it is so informative, concise and readable. It also has lots of illustrations including very clear maps. Another aspect I like in this history is that it is very objective, no bias in favour or against the country. This is the best history of Portugal I know and I would recommend to anyone interested in this subject. Great value for money.

Editorial Review:

Professor Saraiva's multi-volume History of Portugal is a celebrated
scholarly standard work. Yet, when he published a one-volume Historia
Concisa, it proved a run-away best seller in Portugal, and the television
series that went with it became a chart-topper. His latest book, produced
especially for Carcanet's Aspects of Portugal series, is a history of his
country, brief, acute and illuminating, written with scholarly insight and
with non-specialist foreign readers specifically in mind.

To this main text Ian Robertson, author of the well-known Blue
Guide to Portugal, has added a historical gazeteer, brief biographies,
chronological tables, maps and other elements which make this an essential
Companion, the sort of book that a reader in need of accurate, brief and
lucid reference will find useful, and every visitor to Portugal will find
rewarding.

The book is generously illustrated.

A condensed summary of events from a different perspective 4 out of 5 stars.
32 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Hugh Kennedy attempts to summarize nearly eight centuries of complex History into a little over 300 pages. The result is a tedious, incomplete yet interesting read.

His intentions are to give the Muslim side of the story (an aspect which has been seriously considered by so-called "western" scholars only in the last half century, and which is sparking increasing interest especially in North, Central and South America).

As an academic Historian he achieves his goal at the price of having to oversimplify and often make assumptions based on the most current opinions. This is not necessarily to say that he is biased. But I do believe that he has over-extended the possibilities with this book. There is way too much information, which is too complicated to be compressed into such a small space.

He is to be admired for his ambition, but I'm afraid that unless you are already aware of the History of the area and just need a summary of events which is a bit more detailed than any encyclopedia, this book is going to be a heavy load to carry.

For the beginner who just needs to know more about Muslim Spain, this is a reliable source, but don't get discouraged by the density of its contents, take it one chapter at a time, and you can greatly benefit from it. For further details on certain aspects and for a list of sources, Kennedy provides a very good bibliography at the end, which will undoubtedly enrich your knowledge of the subject.

I give it four stars for its factual content (a very high achievement on its own), but won't give it the extra star because of the overload it causes.

Editorial Review:

This is the first study in English of the political history of Muslim Spain and Portugal, based on Arab sources. It provides comprehensive coverage of events across the whole of the region from 711 to the fall of Granada in 1492. Up till now the history of this region has been badly neglected in comparison with studies of other states in medieval Europe. When considered at all, it has been largely written from Christian sources and seen in terms of the Christian Reconquest. Hugh Kennedy raises the profile of this important area, bringing the subject alive with vivid translations from Arab sources. This will be fascinating reading for historians of medieval Europe and for historians of the middle east drawing out the similarities and contrasts with other areas of the Muslim world.

Editorial Review:

This book takes a bold new look at both Spain's and Portugal's New World empires in a trans-Atlantic context. It argues that modern notions of sovereignty in the Atlantic world have been unstable, contested, and equivocal from the start. It shows how much contemporary notions of sovereignty emerged in the Americas as a response to European imperial crises in the age of revolutions. Jeremy Adelman reveals how many modern-day uncertainties about property, citizenship, and human rights were forged in an epic contest over the very nature of state power in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Sovereignty and Revolution in the Iberian Atlantic offers a new understanding of Latin American and Atlantic history, one that blurs traditional distinctions between the "imperial" and the "colonial." It shows how the Spanish and Portuguese empires responded to the pressures of rival states and merchant capitalism in the eighteenth century. As empires adapted, the ties between colonies and mother countries transformed, recreating trans-Atlantic bonds of loyalty and interests. In the end, colonies repudiated their Iberian loyalties not so much because they sought independent nationhood. Rather, as European conflicts and revolutions swept across the Atlantic, empires were no longer viable models of sovereignty--and there was less to be loyal to. The Old Regimes collapsed before subjects began to imagine new ones in their place. The emergence of Latin American nations--indeed many of our contemporary notions of sovereignty--was the effect, and not the cause, of the breakdown of European empires.
