Editorial Review:

The national bestseller and winner of the American Book Award, thoroughly updated for the first time since its initial publication to include textbooks written since 2000 and featuring a new chapter on what textbooks get wrong about 9/11 and Iraq.

Since its initial publication in 1995, Lies My Teacher Told Me has gone on to win an American Book Award and the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship, and to sell one million copies in its various editions.

What started out as a survey of the twelve leading American history textbooks has ended up being what the San Francisco Chronicle calls "an extremely convincing plea for truth in education" beginning with the pre-Columbian period and ranging over characters and events as diverse as Reconstruction, Helen Keller, the first Thanksgiving, and the My Lai massacre.

In this revised and updated edition, James Loewen surveys six new high school history textbooks written since the first edition of Lies was published. In his inimitable style, he adds material to each chapter noting where the new books have gotten more accurate and where they are still fatally flawed. Loewen also writes at length about the way these textbooks treat the 2001 terrorist attacks and our "response" in Iraq. In fact, while researching this new edition Loewen made the front page of the New York Times in 2006 when he discovered that publishers were passing off as original virtually identical passages on important recent events in a number of history books. And in yet another example of the failure of American history textbooks, he found that "celebrity" historians whose names appear as authors in some cases have never read, let alone written, the texts attributed to them.

This book will make your child LOVE History 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My 1st grader and even my 5th grader absolutely LOVE this book. While some of the material is advanced for my 1st grader, it is written in a way that he can still comprehend the general idea. I also purchased the workbook that accompanies this book and it is filled with lots of very informative teaching guides and tear-out pages for my child to color. My 5th grader has another book on History of Western Civilization and he comes in and listens while I teach from this book as it explains events in a much more indepth way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but also highly recommend that you purchase the accompanying workbook. Many thanks to the author!

Editorial Review:

What terrible secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb? Did nomads like lizard stew? What happened to Anansi the Spider in the Village of the Plantains? And how did a six-year-old become the last emperor of Rome?

Africa, China, Europe, the Americas—find out what happened all around the world in long-ago times. This first revised volume begins with the earliest nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor. Newly revised and updated, The Story of the World, Volume 1 includes maps, a new timeline, more illustrations, and additional parental aids.

This read-aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary-school children. Enjoy it together and introduce your child to the marvelous story of the world's civilizations.

Simply the BEST!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the best review and APWH test preparation that exists!! You will enjoy the style and the voice of the author, and this review will not be dry or boring like your textbook may be ;-)... The sample tests are very similar to the real APWH exam, which is NOT true of any of the other review books. This is not to say that you should substitute this review book for studying your notes and reading your text, because that will not work well for you, but it is a great memory jogger and maybe a great way to help you understand the most important trends and relationships that your textbook covers in more depth. Buy it if you plan to take the AP Exam!!!

The best for this subject, easily. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

It's too bad there aren't more reviews to back my opinion, because this book easily beats out the Kaplan and Cliffs Notes versions, both of which I became familiar with while studying. The summaries and simple language were key in helping me remember and learn things that weren't in my textbook.

The practice tests are also better than any other competitor, and the opening section on how to take the test itself is crucial. There's a lot more to the test than the "eliminate and guess" technique, and the strategies are outlined well.

I owe my 5 to this book, and would recommend the series (always written by the same person so far) to anyone over the outdated Cliffs version and the often-confusing Kaplan editions.

Hey it worked for me, It will work for you!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I will make this short and sweet.
I bought both this book as well as the barons sat US history book.
This one dominates in that it makes it 10 times easier to understand. Barron's has a lot of unnecessary info but it is much more thorough in basically all the reading. BUTT it is many times more boring and often very hard to read and understand.
I read this book about 3 times (takes about like 3-4 hours, short read!!), did the tests and skimmed over the barrons and amazingly got a 760!!! it was weird cus on the practice tests in this book, i score no higher than 720. the barrons tests are RIDICULOUSly hard!!!! might be good just for info review. If your like me, where if the reading gets to complex then you tune out, get this one!!! Barrons is unnecessarily cus i did not learn anything from that to be honest..
*make sure you memorize the ammendments, acts, court cases, and important election dates......which leads to (down)

BUY the sparknotes flash cards!! They work pretty. welll i thought soo.
good luck kids!!!

Get another book 3 out of 5 stars.

i take ap us history and i am having a hard time so i decided to buy a book to help me. when i first read this book i realize this book does not teach anything and instead it only tells you how to "crack the ap test(something you should already know how to do if you have taken a standardized test). this is a book consists of only questions, with no explanations except for the 2 practice tests.
but there are some good things about this too. unlike the princeton review books(which i highly recommend, got one for ap euro and i have an a instead of failing), this book has a chronological summary of events and a glossary which some if not most other review books do not have. and it really helps
i would only get/use this for reviewing before the ap exam. and yes, i am barely passing ap us so im planning to get the princeton review version soon.

Be Tough and Competent! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Gene Kranz does an amazing job of showing what people can do if they have the right leadership, teamwork, commitment and passion.

The book allows us to see Kranz's perspective as flight controller, (and later flight director) during his tenure on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs and beyond.

From the tremendous successes, to the gut wrenching failures, to the heroism, to the practical jokes, this book has it all. Gene Kranz was a key player in helping to create a culture of Tough and Competent flight controllers who had discipline and morale. They knew the true meaning of teamwork.

One of the stories that impressed me most was after the devastating tragedy of the Apollo 1. A fire on the pad killed Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffe while they were training in the capsule. Afterwards Kranz got in front of his flight controllers and said:

"Spaceflight will never tolerate carelessness, incapacity, and neglect. Somewhere, somehow, we screwed up. It could have been the design, build, or test. Whatever it was we should have caught it."

Kranz and his people (as well as everyone else on the space program) took responsibility for their actions and went on to amazing successes. We crawled out the cradle of this home we call earth and explored another world. Twelve men in all walked on the moon. Also, three astronauts were brought back home safely from the brink of disaster in Apollo 13. We had truly gone where no man had gone before.

These were human beings, and they are the best of the best. Not an Astronaut was lost during any of the following Apollo missions. The tragedy on the pad drove the commitment of everyone on the space program to an entirely new level. As a matter of fact, not a man was lost once they left earth on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.

Gene Kranz sums up how he gained his skills to be a top flight director when he said:

"The flight director's ultimate training comes at the console, working real problems, facing the risks, making irrevocable decisions."

This book belongs on any bookshelf, but not to be looked at, but to be read and understood. We all have the makings of greatness, we just have to take responsibility for our actions and do the very best we know how. What other amazing things can we accomplish as a species if we have the right leadership, teamwork, commitment, and passion?

REA CLEP History Guide Needs Improvement!! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The REA CLEP History of the US I study guide is in need of improvement and/or revision! The format of the book and the accompanying CD-ROM is
very usable...but the problem is that the information in it has little to
nothing to do with the real exam that was taken yesterday. The actual exam results were 20 points less than I scored on each of the 3 practice exams in the book. These practice exams and explanations gave a false
sense of readiness. I wish I would have used the actual study materials from the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). When I called REA about the difference between the study guide's practice exams and the actual exam....they said I should write a review online? So, I am alerting people to use other study materials than this REA study guide (published in 2006). It resulted in wasted time and money for me.

Editorial Review:

Get those CLEP college credits you deserve.. our savvy test experts show you the way to master the test and get the score that gets you college credit.

This updated and revised test prep features a comprehensive review of U.S. since the Civil War plus 2 full-length practice exams based on the actual CLEP exam. Both exams are thoroughly discussed in extensive detail. Follow up your study with REA's test-taking strategies, powerhouse drills and study schedule that get you ready for test day. The guide's glossary illustrates prominent persons and events in American history including court decisions and military actions.
