Editorial Review:

The highly anticipated third book in the critically acclaimed and bestselling series takes the art of being wimpy to a whole new level.

Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.

Greg and his family and friends, who make the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books a must-read for middle school readers, are back and at their best in this hilarious new installment of the series, which is sure to please current fans while attracting new ones.

Editorial Review:

Burning Up: On Tour with the Jonas Brothers is your backstage pass to life with Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas. It includes never-before-seen photos of the Jonas Brothers' Look Me in the Eyes tour and exclusive images taken during Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus's Best of Both Worlds tour. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at the band warming up, performing, and having fun backstage.

This sizzling souvenir will also give you a glimpse of the downtime that the brothers have between gigs. In addition to pictures of the group laying down tracks at the recording studio for A Little Bit Longer, giving radio interviews, and sight-seeing in London, you'll see snap-shots of them bowling, racing Go-karts, and playing video games with the Bonus Jonas, younger brother Frankie.

The dynamic photography is accompanied by a candid narrative by the Jonas Brothers themselves, chronicling their life on the road and their experiences growing up in the music world. They discuss everything from the songwriting process to the importance of family to their favorite kind of ice cream (Kevin's is rocky road!) So pick up your guitar and get ready to strum along--you're going on tour with the Jonas Brothers!

big wind-up, no finish 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Perhaps the rave reviews here are because this book actually makes sense as part of some larger series by this author. If you aren't familiar with the complete Gaiman, tho', you might find this book hugely disappointing. It starts really well, with a small boy escaping his family's murder and being taken in by ghosts in a graveyard, but you'll never get any real answers. Why were his parents killed? (It has to do with an unexplained prophecy, and you never find out why this kid, or who made the prophecy, or why it matters.) He's run afoul of a secret society, but who they really are, or why we should care, or what they do when they're not threatening this kid, is never explained either. Most of the action at the end is unexplained, off-screen deus ex machina involving some group called the Honour Guard (nope, you guessed it-- you won't find out who they are or why they care either). Is it supposed to be a prequel? Is it supposed to make sense? Or is it a colossal rip-off and a total waste of time? The ghost scenes were good, but for a book with ghosts that actually makes sense and has an ending, you might try Alive in Necropolis... this is just the author making $$ for nothing, I thought.

Editorial Review:

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy.

He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead.

There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy-an ancient Indigo Man beneath the hill, a gateway to a desert leading to an abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer.

But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family. . . .

Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, the graveyard book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

eh.... 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is just okay. The pictures are cute and vivid which I like, but it's very simplistic and VERY short. My kids (3 years and 18 months) just aren't all that excited by it. It's a fine book, but I'm surprised by all the 5 star ratings. Expectations were set a bit high, I guess.

My 9 Month Old loves this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

She loves the holes in the book and the surprise at the end! (her image in the mirror) it is her current favorite. Peek a boo is an often used phrase for her right now and her favorite game, so using different words for "boo" is super funny to her!

Where's the beef? Oh, page 3. 2 out of 5 stars.

In looking for another whimsical, creative, offbeat baby book like Pat the Bunny (from the book within the book: "How big is bunny? Soooooooo big.") I found that this title and two Boynton books were purchased on Amazon by people who bought Pat. Because of the connection with Pat I was expecting something more than just five peek-a-s and I also expected that every image would be tied together in a story.

The peek-a-s are as follows: Owl/Who, Cow/Moo, Ghost/Boo, Animals/Zoo, Train/Choo-Choo, and the predictable You. The cutouts through which you see part of the full image are the same rotated peanut shape on every page.

I would have expected the partial views at least to contain multiple interesting hints about the uncovered image that encourage the baby to think. Only the Zoo page really has anything approaching that (leaves and animal designs...but in that image the partial view of the giraffe looks like a quilt so it may be more confusing than helpful). It would have been nice if the cutout shapes had some relation to the images behind them.

I know that you didn't ask but in my opinion the four- and five-star baby books should have some or all of the following elements: (1) little visual details that the baby can gradually notice after repeated readings (plentiful, for example, in Big Red Barn), (2) an actual story about something in the real world, perhaps repeated in a few different ways (as in Bear Hunt) or with different types of characters (as in More, More, More Said the Baby) or even just an underlying structure that can be learned along with individually engaging images (like in ABC Kids or 100 First Words), (3) interactivity that involves the baby in more than one action (as in Pat the Bunny or the color/object books with things to feel or move), (4) creative or whimsical elements that aren't in any of the hundreds of other books the baby will read (like in Pat or the Very Hungry Caterpillar), (5) a style (story or images) that has become archetypal and hasn't been ripped off or repeated by everyone else (any of the above), (6) Lyrical text (Brown Bear or Bear Hunt), (7) a story with an enlightening theme that isn't sappy or preachy (like What Daddies Do Best).

I gave this as many as two stars because baby's mom says that it will help her practice similar-sounding words.

Editorial Review:

Colorful pictures and simple rhyming texts help children guess what's peeking through the die-cut windows in these two fun board books. The anticipation of what's hiding on the next page and th bright, engaging illustrations will keep youngsters guessing and giggling all the way to the suprise endings.

Not only was the delivery fast, the book is even better than I thought it would be. It's just right for my four year old granddaughter who wants to use bigger words now that she's a big girl.

Editorial Review:

I know some Big Words.
I'll teach them to you.
Although you are small,
you can use Big Words too.

Big Words aren't scary.
They're big fun to learn.
I was taught once
and now it's your turn.

The eighth hilarious picture book by the #1 New York Times bestselling team of Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell helps little people communicate in a big person's world. With grown-up words like cooperate, respect, patience and considerate, a big, boisterous and zany family celebrates the power of language and discovers that words—big or little—are the bridge that connects us all.

A Pure Delight 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you give a cat a cupcake, he'll ask for some sprinkles to go with it. When you give him the sprinkles, he might spill some on the floor. Cleaning up will make him hot, so you'll give him a bathing suit . . . and that's just the beginning!

This parable teaches kids that if you give a cat a cupcake then soon after the cat will expect much more. The cat just asks for sprinkles at first, but next thing you know, the cat's dragging the child to the beach, the amusement park, and the museum, forcing the child to carry all its stuff, and then making the child clean up the mess behind.

The lovable cat who first appeared in If You Give a Pig a Party now has his very own book! Written in the tradition of the bestselling If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond's newest story will show everyone that Cat is where it's at!

A must read for young and old. Fun illustrations and a cute story as well.

so small 2 out of 5 stars.

Didn't realize this was a mini-version of the book till I received it. It's about the size of an adult's hand (fingertip to palm). Doesn't make the best gift.

I have always loved this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

The Christmas Edition
This was a bedtime favorite of my children. Now our oldest is about to have her own child (its a boy). So I bought a parcel of books for the baby. When Kimberly saw this book, tears sprang in her eyes remembering me reading this to her while she sat on my lap. In a few more months someone new will be in her arms on her lap, and she will be reading this book to him.

Editorial Review:

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room -- to the picture of the three little bears sitting on chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to themittens and the kittens, toeverything one by one -- the little bunny says goodnight.

In this classic of children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

Superb 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is the seventh and last book in the Harry Potter series. J. K. Rowling successfully brings all the threads together for a satisfying resolution. I enjoyed this book tremendously.

Please do not get side-tracked by the critics who seem to get a kick out of pretending that it should have been extremely simple to write a better series of stories. J. K. Rowling did a magnificent job. The last writer to achieve a similar level of ability did so over 50 years ago. In fact, the excitement surrounding the Harry Potter phenomenon resurected many other works in the fantasy gendre. The reader should focus is the question: Does this book, in front of me, catch my interest and entertain my imagination? For each book in the Harry Potter series, my own answer has been, "Yes!"

Is there anything else I should say about this book? Well, there is an area where the book seems to drag a bit. But, after a few re-readings of the book, I have no idea how the problem can be cured or if there is a real need to cure it. Also, there are two or three places where something good happens, apparently, without a decent explanation. My view is that many things happen in real life that stretch the bounds of the possible. So, why is that not possible in this story? I will, simply, remind you that, before Dumbledore's death, a great number of things and forces were set in motion. Also, in Harry's magical world, magical things are not exactly nor completely inanimate. I suggest that some of the fortunate happenings in this book are a result of magical things and forces focusing on a resolution of this battle between good and evil.

Finally, victory comes with a steep price tag. Friends lose their lives. Much ruin and harm occurs. But, the future no longer has a dark cloud hanging over it.

Personally, I would rather sit back and enjoy this superb book than to get side-tracked with small quibbles.

I recommend this book.
