Scholarly and Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.

Like Rough Stone Rolling, I found this book to be thoroughly captivating, scholarly and inspiring. It is well documented from first hand sources. It is refreshing to read LDS church history where punches are not pulled in an effort to make church leaders seem perfect. Rather getting caricatures, you get to see great men with their flaws and their mistakes. Because of this you appreciate them all the more and come away with a better understanding of who David O. McKay (and the men that served with him) was. These were great men and this is a great read.

Very interesting book 5 out of 5 stars.

It's not hard to discern the authors political as well as other baises, but still a very interesting read. Loved it.

Editorial Review:

While the Americans were fighting in Vietnam, a struggle of even greater strategic significance was taking place in the Middle East: the Sultanate of Oman guards the entrance to the Arabian Gulf, and thus controls the movement of oil from that region. In the 1960s and 70s, the Communists tried to seize this artery and, had they succeeded, the consequences for the West and for the Middle East would have been disastrous - and yet, few people have ever heard of this geo-political drama at the height of the Cold War.

In the Service of the Sultan tells, first-hand, the largely unknown story of a small number of British officers who led Muslim soldiers in this hard-fought anti-insurgency war which has shaped today's Gulf. After outlining the historical, geographical and political background, the book describes military action in a stark and mountainous environment, including operations with irregular forces and the SAS as well as action in the air and at sea. The book gives a gripping, moving, funny account of all these and paints a powerful and illuminating picture of the realities of war.

It will appeal to all who are interested in the Cold War and relationships between the Western and the Arab worlds. Politics, history, irregular warfare, religion, international affairs: all are ingredients in this absorbing, informative read. In the light of the current insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is also timely to be reminded how a rare victory was won over Communist guerrillas.

Editorial Review:

What is it about the inhospitable corners of the world that so attracts the imagination? Scott in the Antarctic, Hillary on top of Everest, and a multitude of wanderers--from Wilfred Thesiger and T. E. Lawrence to Gertrude Bell--wandering through the vast, empty sands of "the empty quarter" in what is now Saudi Arabia; each of these explorers has been drawn to places most of us would never think of going and found there an unexpected window onto their own souls. In The Road to Ubar, filmmaker Nicholas Clapp follows in the footsteps of earlier visitors to the Arabian peninsula as he seeks the legendary city of Ubar. Going back at least two millennia, stories about a vast city filled with gold that disappeared almost in an instant haunt the literature and lore of Arabia. And for almost as long as the stories have been around, so have the rogues and dreamers who have tried to find it. His interest sparked by the accounts of earlier travelers in the region such as Thesiger and Bertram Thomas, Clapp decided to put together his own team in hopes of finding and filming the lost city.

Using both modern tools (photographs taken from space, courtesy of NASA) as well as old ones (maps, descriptions, and written accounts), Clapp and his team slowly pieced together the clues until they arrived, at last, at the site where they would spend the next four years digging. How they got to the end of The Road to Ubar and what they found there is at the heart of this unusual travel memoir.

Editorial Review:

This is an examination of the political, economic and social develoment of the Sultanate of Oman from the accession of Sultan Qaboos b Sa'id Al-Sa'id in a palace coup in 1970 to the promulgation of the basic law in November 1996. It looks at Oman within the context of the "rentier" model and argues that the sultanate diverges markedly from that model as the royal family has not utilized oil income to consolidate its control over the country but that, due to the patriarchal tradition of sultantal govenrment and the historical role of commercial, tribal and religoius elites, the Al-Sa'id have been forced to share power with those important elements of society.

Editorial Review:

Oman is a country no visitor forgets. Out of Oman's long heritage has grown a people of sophistication, grace, and confidence. They and their country, rich in its dramatic mountains and coasts, its terraced fields and pasturelands, and its sweeping deserts, cast an unfailing spell. In this famous book, reshaped and wholly revised to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sultan Qaboos's rule, the present is described in the context of the past.

Editorial Review:

Through photographs and detailed case histories, Unni Wikan explores the strict segregation of women, the wearing of the burqa mask, the elaborate nuptial rituals, and the graceful quality of Oman's social relations.

"Wikan does provide insights into the real position of these secluded and segregated women. . . . All this is interesting and valuable."—Ahdaf Soueif, Times Literary Supplement

"The book is detailed, insightful, and . . . engrossing. Anyone interested in the day-to-day triumphs and sorrows of women who live 'behind the veil' will want to read this account."—Arab Book World

"Wikan, a fine ethnographer, has an eye for everything that is distinctive about the culture and . . . builds up a wholly convincing picture. Above all, there is a sustained attempt to penetrate the inner lives of these strangely serene people."—Frank H. Stewart, Wilson Quarterly

"This book will certainly be of interest to all scholars concerned with sexual identity in the Islamic world."—Henry Munson, American Anthropologist

Editorial Review:

This book is a study of the seafaring communities of the Arabian Gulf and Oman in the past 150 years. It is an analysis of the significance of the dhow and how coastal communities interacted in the long tradition of seafaring. In addition to the archival material, this work is based on extensive field research, recording the voices of seamen in over 200 interviews. The book provides an integrated study of dhow activity in the area concerned and examines the consciousness of belonging to a wider culture of the Indian ocean as expressed in boat-building traditions, navigational techniques, crew organisation and port towns.

The book brings together the different measures of time past, the sea, its people and their material culture. The Arabian Gulf and Oman have traditionally shared a common destiny within the Western Indian Ocean. The seasonal monsoon winds were fundamental to the physical and human unities of the seafaring communities, producing a way of life in harmony with the natural world, a world which was abruptly changed with the discovery of oil. What remains is memories of a seafaring past, a history of traditions and customs recorded here in the recollections of a dying generation and in the rich artistic heritage of the region.

Editorial Review:

In 1970 the SAS was called in to support the Sultan of Oman's armed forces in their fierce campaign against a Communist armed insurrection. This is the gripping story of the part played in the conflict by squadrons of the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, the first full SAS squadron in the region. Written by the man who commanded that unit and who successfully raised the first bands of Dhofari irregulars to fight for the Sultan, SAS: Operation Storm provides a unique and personal insight into what was to become one of the most successful counter-insurgency campaigns of the twentieth century.

Editorial Review:

In this fascinating and beautifully illustrated study of the fragrant resin crystal once valued as highly as gold, Juliet Highet takes readers back through time and over the Frankincense Trail, from Southern Arabia to Ancient Rome. The land of frankincense - three ancient Omani cities connected with the frankincense trade - were recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history and value of the resin, once as important to the ancient Arabian world as oil is now, is not widely appreciated today. This stunning book that combines travel writing, history, and a glimpse into the world of perfumery explores every aspect of these fragrant, ivory- coloured 'pearls,' from frankincense's harvesting beneath the barks of desert trees, through the vital role it played in the culture of the old Middle East, to its use today in aromatherapy and perfume. Hundreds of colour photographs illustrate the cultivation and preparation of frankincense today along the historic incense routes, while artworks and maps reveal how this luxury item was for thousands of years so crucial to the economy and life of Arabia.
