Nice version - previous review wrong 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for a non-Disney version of this classic tale, this is a nice re-telling of the Aladdin story, with captivating illustrations for kids ages 6-10.

The previous reviewer wrote that this version of the classic Aladdin tale was in error - that it mistakenly took place in China, not the Middle East as it should be. The truth is that this story has ALWAYS taken place in China, from the earliest existing versions of the story from the 16th century. Disney got it wrong, no surprise. Although these stories originated in the Middle East, they were often fantasies about far away and fabulous places, such as China. (It may also interest people to know that the earliest versions of many of these stories are in French, not Arabic, and many scholars believe that the versions which we know were created by Europeans out of bits and fragments of local Arabic and Persian sources, emphasizing the "oriental" exoticism which Europeans saw therein. In other words, there is no existing "authentic" Middle Eastern version.)

For grown ups, I recommend the highly readable two volumes of Arabian Nights tales translated into English by Husain Haddawy. It's the definitive version, IMHO. Avoid Sir Richard Burton's translation like the plague. Enough said.

For kids ages 7-11, I also strongly recommend Brian Alderson's colorfully illistrated retelling of the Arabian Nights (ISBN 0-688-14219-2). Another excellent illustrated version is The Arabian Nights retold by Neil Philip (ISBN 0-531-06868-4), which has fewer but funkier illustrations. Both story collections contain over a dozen tales, sutable for reading over many days, including the stories of Aladdin and Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves. Alderson's version also has the Story of Sinbad, and is the children's version which comes closest to mirroring the full extent of the original tales.

For slightly older kids (ages 9-14) I would recommend Geraldine McCaughrean's version of the One Thousand and One Arabian Nights (ISBN 0-19-274500), which has the best version of the stories-within-story framework.

If Middle Eastern exoticism is your interest, another good picture book for kids ages 5-7 is Tomie DePaola's Legend of the Persian Carpet (ISBN 0-399-22415-7).

Editorial Review:

Philip Pullman garnered every accolade around with the breathtaking His Dark Materials trilogy. Now he turns his storytelling gifts to one of the most famous of the Arabian Nights tales, "Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp." Aladdin is a shiftless good-for-nothing boy until he unwittingly acquires a magic lamp inhabited by a genie -- and the adventure that follows both makes his fortune and makes him a man. Pullman tells the tale with his trademark crisp writing and fast-paced action, while Sophy Williams's pastels shimmer with the heat and beauty of the Far East. Terrific for reading aloud!

An Old Fairy Tale, Made Better..... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

You know the old story. The old Miller dies leaving his oldest son, the mill, his middle son, the donkey and his youngest son, the cat. His youngest son, Jacques, isn't too happy with his bequest. He likes the cat. It's a very nice cat. But what will a cat do for him when it comes to the future. And that's when Puss surprises the young man and begins to talk. He has big plans. He's smart and crafty and as he tells his new owner: "I've got the wit, if you'll supply the courage." With that, the two are off to find fame and fortune and maybe a princess..... Phillip Pullman has taken this well known fairy tale and given it new life. He's added a few new entertaining characters, an ogre, a hermit and two ghouls and enhanced the story by broadening the plot line and making it more imaginative and interesting. His witty and irreverent text is beautifully complemented by Ian Beck's bold and colorful charming illustrations, full of busy action and special details, including cartoon-like thought bubbles with amusing asides that will keep older kids laughing out loud. Perfect for youngsters 5-9, this version of Puss In Boots has a much better ending that ties up all the loose ends and takes readers on a hilarious adventure that shouldn't be missed.

Editorial Review:

Here's what the old miller left his sons when he died: To his oldest son, the mill. To his middle son, the donkey. To his youngest son, Jacques, the cat. A fine cat, indeed, but still, just a cat.
Luckily, as Jacques discovers, Puss is no ordinary kitty. He's smart. He can talk. And he is quite a snappy dresser. He's also planned an exciting future for Jacques-one that involves a princess and a very large fortune.
Master storyteller Philip Pullman and prizewinning illustrator Ian Beck team up in this witty retelling, which sparkles with humor and adventure.

The Firework-Maker's Daughter 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am reviewing The Firework Maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman. I would give this book 5 stars because it is very descriptive. This story is about a girl name Lila who wanted to be a firework maker. She asked her friend Chulak to ask her father how to be a firework-maker. Chulak told her she needed to go to Mount Merapi. The only thing she didn't know was that she needed the water from the goddess of the lake.

Perfectly crafted 5 out of 5 stars.

A perfectly crafted children's story, a lovely balance and the characters were delightful. Some of the wit reminded me of Terry Pratchet but alot more subtle.

I like Philip Pullman, but... 3 out of 5 stars.

A bit shallow for Pullman. Not as interesting as I'd hoped.

Editorial Review:

More than anything else in the world, Lila wants to be a Firework-Maker. But every Firework-Maker must make a perilous journey to face the terrifying Fire-Fiend! Can Lila possibly survive? Especially when she doesn't know she needs special protection to survive his flames...The exciting and heart-warming story of Lila's journey to face the fearful fire demon fizzes with fun and drama.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was the scariest book I have ever read. All of the characters are deep, and the plots are very complex and twisted. It is a thuroughly enchanting book, all of the books in it, I should say. All of the stories grab you and don't let go. It's a full time thriller, you can't get away.

A collection of some of the best detective stories ever. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

DETECTIVE STORIES is a wonderful compilation of a few of the best detective stories that have ever been written. Some stories, others elaborate, some puzzling, and some rather comical, this wonderful novel includes mysteries written by legendary detective authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, Raymond Smullyan, Issac Asimov, Italo Calvino, And Tony Fletcher. The first story, THE SPECKLED BAND, is by Arthur Conan Doyle and features everyone's favorite detective: Sherlock Holmes. It's a little bit of a scary story involving a terrified woman who hears the strange, low whistle is the night air that once killed her sister while she was sleeping. The mystery is deep and dangerous, and chilling. Another personal favorite of mine was THE CROSS OF LORRAINE by Isaac Asimov, which elaborately tells the story of a keen magician who met a woman who disappeared as soon as he took a liking in her. Even he can't find her, and when he tells the story of the vanished lady to guests at a dinner, the plot of the mysterious vanishing thickens. Yet another wonderful mystery is that of FINGERPRINTING A GHOST, by Tony Fletcher. It is a frightening tale that involves the obvious supernatural: taking the fingerprints of a mysterious ghost that appears and reappears in an old house in order to solve a mystery. These are just some of the mysteries available in this great novel selected by my favorite author, Philip Pullman, who also wrote the wonderful HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy and the thrilling Sally Lockhart mystery trilogy. It even has one very silly and comical story just for fun in case the reader has had too many serious reads. Any detective story fan shouldn't miss out on this thrilling read, perfect just before bed when it is at the peak of its fright.

Editorial Review:

Young mystery fans will be enthralled by this compelling volume of detective fiction that includes both classic and contemporary writers such as Italo Calvino, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, Damon Runyon, and Andrew Vachss.

AKA The White Mercedes 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

You should know that this YA novel is also known by another title: The White Mercedes. Perhaps it's a matter of British marketing. However, a film is being prepared (with Pullman's enthusiasm) under this title. Yes, it's dark. Tragic. As with all the great tragedies we've read: Don't get caught in the plot - get caught in the characters and then see what you think.

Another Pullman and Another Oxford but Worth Reading Still 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Fans of Pullman's trilogy should receive a fair warning before moving any further. This is not Lyra's Oxford, this is our Oxford so expect thugs, sex, crime but also love, trust and friendship.
Pullman retells the story of Romeo and Juliet with extreme adroitness. He manages to keep the lyrical beauty and truth of the play and avoids desperate attempts of retaining any elements that would seem dated and out of place in a modern novel.
This is a novel for younger adults but if you feel that your 13+ year olds have never heard about sex, you may need to read it first yourself. The danger is you may get hooked on Pullman seriously.

Editorial Review:

Chris falls in love with Jenny the moment he sets eyes on her at an Oxford ball. She's beautiful but secretive and he can't help but want to be with her. But fate is cruel and, as their relationship blossoms, tragedy and violence wait in the wings. Chris's boss has a shady past that won't stay hidden. And his ruthless enemies will use two innocent teenagers to exact their revenge on him ...

Beautiful Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For A trilogy that has followed me through the past 11 years of my life, I couldn't be happier with the quality of this edition. It's beautiful cover and quality thick paper do complete justice to the magical content it contains.

A good read 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this triolgy to be very good, well written, and good characters. But at times, the story was long drawn out, pullman tried to gain suspense through complex details, but by the time he finishes a scene, its been stretched to the point that all the action leaks out. Overall, a very good book, but not excellent.

A powerful blend of science and magic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the most powerful fantasy stories since Lord of the Rings. Blending science and magic, myth and even theology into a complex and thrilling adventure story that takes the reader on a journey through worlds that are both strange and familiar. Lyra and Will are two endearing heroes and Lyra's daemon is a wonderful creature, not a pet, but part of her soul. This is imaginative fiction at its very best, with rich characters, exciting conflicts and a story building towards a grand and thought-provoking climax. Heartily recommended to anybody who likes to become absorbed in their reading. Like Harry Potter, Mortal Engines or Hecate's Child, you might not notice time passing as you read it!

Editorial Review:

A luxury edition of all three books in the His Dark Materials trilogy in one volume. Contains 'Northern Lights', 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass'.
