Just when he gets it all wound up the spring snaps! 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is very skillfuly writen by Philip Pullman, all the way up until the end. I am eleven and I have just finished reading this book. It is wonderful story but becomes very weak near the end, it gets very mushy and loses he dark theme Philip had built up throuout the story. Clockwork could easily be twice the length it is now. It is as if Philip ran up agianst at deadline near the end and just finished it. The ending exhibits none of the skill prevelent in the rest of the book.

I can't wait ot read more by this author! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my first Philip Pullman book. I went to the library looking for "the Gold Compass but it was checked out so I grabbed this little book by the same author and decided I'd give it a try. It is an admidtedly short, fairy tale revolving around a small group of people living in a German villiage a long time ago. The people's lives revolve around a monster grandfather clock that is filled with lifelike figures. Every time an apprentice is about to graduate to become a master he must carve a figure for this clock. Karl, the apprentice who is one of the main characters, has so failed to produce a figure and now has only a single night to come up with something or be disgraced. How far is this desperate willing to go to achieve his goals? An enigmatic old clockmaker comes to the inn and willing to help him but with magic help of this kind there is always a price.
There is also a writer whose short stories have a bad habbit of turning out to be nonfiction, a little prince who is not what he seems, and a plucky little inkeepers daughter who is the hero and moral center of this story.
Pullman packs a lot of emotion and suspense in this little book. A must read for anyone who enjoys suspense, fantasy, or just enjoys a good fairy tale with a twist. After this I cannot wait to read Pullman's other books.

Editorial Review:

From the master storyteller comes a tale of gothic mystery as elegantly crafted as the most intricate clockwork. A tormented apprentice clock-maker - and a deadly knight in armour. A mechanical prince - and the sinister Dr Kalmenius, who some say is the devil- Compelling characters and superbly constructed narrative create a story that is funny, frightening, exciting, and clever. A gem.

I Was A Rat ! By Allen M. Koshy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book about a boy although a little bit ratty comes to a couple named Bob and Joan. They take care of the boy and call him Roger.Roger is a little bit weird but, when I read this book Roger becomes a really nice boy.The author made this book so real to me that I felt I was being sucked right into the book! This is a really great book to read.

Editorial Review:

“I Was a Rat!” So insists a scruffy boy named Roger. Maybe it’s true. But what is he now? A terrifying monster running wild in the sewers? The Daily Scourge is sure of it. A victim of “Rodent Delusion”? The hospital nurse says yes. A lucrative fairground freak? He is to Mr. Tapscrew. A champion wriggler and a budding thief? That’s what Billy thinks. Or just an ordinary small boy, though a little ratty in his habits? Only three people believe this version of the story. And it may take a royal intervention—and a bit of magic—to convince the rest of the world.

Set against the backdrop of a Royal Wedding—and a playful parody of the press, I Was a Rat! is a magical weaving of humor, fairy tale, and adventure.

Young Adult IS appropriate 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Enough with Romeo and Juliet, enough with 'near-pornography'! The fact that this is a tragedy reminiscent of Shakespeare is used as a contrast of R&J, not a retelling.

Its flaws are of logical plot turns and character, not a misplacement in the young adult genre. It IS a young adult novel, written about a boy and girl more realistic, perhaps, than parents would like their children to read about, but it is far from pornographic (look in your school libraries for Tropic of Cancer and Ulysses if you want something to get angry about). Much is said here about Chapter 6, but what of Chapter 13? Is sex so much worse than an innocent's death? Young people read more graphic things in Cosmo and the Bible.

This novel is about powerlessness and self-doubt in the face of Fate, and in that it succeeds better than most.

Editorial Review:

A suspense-packed thriller centers on the character of Chris, a young man who experiences a fateful meeting with a girl at an Oxford party, only to become caught in the schemes of a criminal out for revenge. By the author of The Broken Bridge.

Pullman delivers again 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Philip Pullman will probably always be best known for the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. This may be appropriate, as this trilogy - The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass - are superior fantasy. But there is more to Pullman than these three books. The Broken Bridge is a standalone novel that shows Pullman's skills go beyond just a single genre.

The Broken Bridge is the story of Ginny, a black (actually mixed-race) sixteen year old girl living in Wales with her white father. Despite the disadvantages of having a long-deceased mother (who came from Haiti) and being one of the very few non-whites in her coastal community, Ginny is reasonably well-adjusted. This stable life comes to a close, however, when a social worker appears at her house. Shortly thereafter, her father reveals something that will completely upset her life: her father had a son by another woman; the woman is dying and soon her half-brother will be living with them.

This revelation is only the first of many that will completely turn Ginny's life upside-down and make her question everything and everyone she has known. The most damaged relationship, however, is with her father who still has a number of other secrets that are beginning to leak out. But there are other truths that will be learned too, regarding her friends, her grandparents and her mother.

This is classified as a "young adult" novel, as most of Pullman's books are, but like his other works, these can actually appeal to any adult readers. I would guess it gets this classification because it is tame from a sex, violence or language standpoint, but the topics - including racism, adultery and even murder - are not exactly "childish."

Pullman is as a good a writer as always. The only disappointment readers are likely to experience is if they expect something like His Dark Materials. Outside of possibly one scene, this story is completely non-fantasy. But if you realize that Pullman can do more than just that one genre, you will find this is another is another good book by him.

Editorial Review:

Over the course of a long summer in Wales, sixteen-year-old Ginny, the mixed-race, artist daughter of an English father and a Haitian mother, learns that she has a half-brother from her father's earlier marriage, and that her own mother may still be alive.

Extra info for Pullman's "His Dark Materials" 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For the ordinary person, this little book has pretty good coverage of the scientific basis for Pullman's trilogy. I am no expert, but from the info in the college courses I have taken with the Teaching Company, I think the writers have done well to condense so many items in a little space. It helps to understand that many of the ideas in Pullmans's fantasy have a bit of reality to them.

The Science of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials 4 out of 5 stars.

Mary & John Gribbin have created a well organized and eaily understood science guide to the authentic physics behind Philip Pullman's epic work. The Gribbins combine good, clear writing with a thurough understanding of phyisics that leads to simple explanations a layman can understand. With out this valualbe work, Mr. Pullman's fantastic tale would remain simply a 'story' underpinned by fanciful and extremely complex and difficult science that might or might not be real for our world. As it happens, much of it is real for our world.

Editorial Review:

With an introduction by Philip Pullman, award-winning science writers Mary and John Gribbin reveal how "Pullman's His Dark Materials" trilogy ("Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass") is rooted in astonishing scientific truth. Drawing on string theory and spacetime, quantum physics and chaos theory, they answer fascinating questions such as: Could parallel worlds like Will's and Lyra's really exist? How does the subtle knife cut through anything? Could there be a bomb like the one made with Lyra's hair? and, of course, What are the Dark Materials?

Editorial Review:

Though ostensibly written for children, this heroic and heart-wrenching His Dark Materials trilogy is beloved by readers of all ages. These three novels unlock the door to parallel universes where demons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes—if it isn't destroyed first. Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands.

Startling revelations arrive in this conclusion to the trilogy. Lyra must pay a price to walk through the land of the dead. Dr. Malone's amber spyglass exerts a haunting power. Most shocking of all, someone knows the names of who will live—and who will die—for love. All the while war rages with the Kingdom of Heaven, a brutal battle that will uncover the secret of Dust.

Witty gothic satire but not Pullman's best 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A parody of gothic melodramas,COUNT KARLSTEIN, could be confusing to the presumed target audience of upper elementary and middle schoolers. The book is told from the viewpoint of several different people and Pullman's writing here is not as well delineated as in his later books. Lots of characters are quickly introduced and I found myself thumbing back to remind myself exactly who was who, especially in the beginning chapters. The plot is over the top and exciting with lots of fun surprises revealed in the closing chapters if the reader is patient enough to wade through the rather cumbersome beginning.

This was a good audio book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was funny because there were a lot of characters who had silly names like Roliopolio and Snivelwurst.

I liked when Charlotte found a wooden head that she named Herr Woodenkopf and carried it around everywhere. It tricked people into thinking it was someone's head and that was funny.

I really liked Charlotte and Max and Eliza. They were the good guys. I did not like Zamiel the Huntsman, he was the bad guy and so was Count Karlstein.

I liked that everyone in the audio book has different voices so it is kind of like listening to a real show.

Editorial Review:

A Transylvanian spoof by the author of "Spring-heeled Jack". It consists of a melodramatic adventure tale in words, cartoons and jokes, about Zamiel, the Demon Huntsman. He terrorizes the villagers of Karlstein, and is offered the evil Count Karlstein's two young nieces as part of a bargain.

La bisagra de la trilogía 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Lyra and Will tumble separately into the strange tropical otherworld of Cittàgazze, where adults are curiously absent and children run wild. Their journey is plagued with obstacles, some familiar and some horribly new, but it eventually brings them closer to Will's father and to the Subtle Knife, a deadly, ancient tool that cuts windows between worlds.

Delightful Book! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Mr.Pandolfo sits down one day and decides to make a scarecrow. But the night he sets it out it is stolen and carried from place to place. Lightning strikes the scaercrow, mysteriously bringing him to life. He finds an orphan boy named Jack, and the scarecrow and his new friend set out for adventure.

This is a bit lighter than the magnificent HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy (both in story and substance) but will be eagerly devoured by the auther's fans.

RATING:B+

Editorial Review:

A tattered scarecrow stands in the middle of a muddy field, taking no notice of the violent thunderstorm around him. But when a bolt of lightning strikes him, fizzing its way through his turnip head and down his broomstick, the Scarecrow blinks with surprise–and comes to life.
So begins the story of the Scarecrow, a courteous but pea-brained fellow with grand ideas. He meets a boy, Jack, who becomes his faithful servant. Leaving behind his bird-scaring duties, the Scarecrow sets out for Spring Valley, with Jack at his side. As the valiant Scarecrow plunges them into terrifying dangers–battles, brigands, broken hearts, and treasure islands–he never realizes he’s being followed by the one family who desperately wishes he’d never sprung to life. Will the Scarecrow discover the secret to his past before the crooked Buffalonis close in on him?

This is not the Spring-Heeled Jack that jumped really high and spat blue flames in England. Not the evil Spring-Heeled Jack that all of us paranormalists love. They just totally changed Jack's personality! How frustrating!

Editorial Review:

Spring-Heeled Jack: The name evoked awe from both criminals and upstanding citizens alike. Some thought he was the devil, but he was actually the original superhero—leaping over the buildings of Victorian England with the help of springs in the heels of his shoes.

The story begins as three young innocents escape their orphanage one dark and stormy night. As they make their way through the treacherous streets of London danger lurks, for hiding in the shadows is Mack the
Knife, the most villainous of villains. Enter
Spring-Heeled Jack, the springiest of heroes. But will Jack’s powers be enough to save
the orphans?

Originally published in paperback, Spring-Heeled Jack is back—now as a hardcover with eye-catching new jacket art.
